As its been stated before the Yankees do not have much payroll flexibility. With all those guys you stated above off the books they are down to an estimated $201 million after arbitration and built in increases. With the luxury tax at $208 million. Arbitration and built in increases will consume all of that $80 million.
I think Cole goes west where he is from to either the Dodgers or the Angels. If Strasburg opts out and Rendon resigns with the Nationals I feel that the White Sox could be on a short list for his services.
Cole signs with the Angels or Dodgers. If Rendon signs with the Nationals and Strasburg opts out the white sox could be on a short list for his services.
I love Abreu but he is not good defensively. He, Eloy, and Tim Anderson's inability to cut down on errors may always prevent the Sox from being good defensively.
Cole seems destined to go to the Dodgers or the Angels. He's from California. They have the money and aren't afraid of big contracts. If Strasburg becomes available and Washington is unable to retain him due to signing Rendon things get interesting. I think the White Sox could be a player on a short list of teams.
It's been stated in articles that he did a lot in helping Betts and Bogaerts in their approach at the plate. Hopefully his philosophies wouldn't clash with Abreu's who currently occupies the role of mentor.?
Unless the Yankees make some moves or go above the luxury tax (which I have heard they won't do) they will be at around $200 million in salary and with little room to work with to stay underneath the $208 million luxury tax.
