I love Bumgarner's demeanor. He's a winner and a proven leader. He's also been known to be a great mentor to young pitchers. All things the White Sox need unfortunately none of them have anything to do with his ability to throw a baseball. He's been an amazing pitcher but just hasn't been the same player since that dirt bike accident that resulted in a shoulder injury in 2017. The last time he was anywhere close to winning a Cy Young was before that injury. He did pitch over 200 innings in 2019, the first time he had gone over 130 innings since 2016, but his home and away splits were concerning as he had a 5.29 era on the road. He's a fly ball pitcher who's always had a big park at Oracle to work with. His overall era in 2019 was 3.90 and I don't think this number would get any better at GR.

I agree with this. I think Ryu is the third best pitcher available this offseason and is the Sox next best option after Wheeler. Age, recent injury history, and future projections all favor Wheeler but Ryu has been a better pitcher when healthy. He was runner up for Cy Young in 2019 and if he stayed healthy he would have won it. He had an era below 2 for the majority of the season.

No, all fans want to win games now. Just some understand that from a money, control, and winning standpoint keeping players for an additional year is much more valuable than having them on a roster opening day. Especially when most fans are in agreement that prime years of contention likely won't start until after 2020.

FA SP: What to do after the Wheeler miss?
Good Guys replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I never said this. I said that Oracle is a very pitcher friendly park and this benefits Mad Bum tremendously. There is a lot of data out there that supports this. -

It was a 5.90 era to be exact. And he was then traded to the Cubs where his era was 6.89 after leaving the pitcher friendly park. -

Bumgarner had a 5.29 era away from home last year. Oracle is very pitcher friendly park and this benefits Mad Bum tremendously. GR is not a pitcher friendly park. Derek Holland played for San Fran and had a 3.57 era one year after posting a 6.20 era with the White Sox. I agree with a lot of your statement but I would prefer Ryu over Bumgarner. If Mad Bum signs with the White Sox I think his numbers could be similar to James Shields with the White Sox. Who also came from a very pitcher friendly park in San Diego before arriving in Chicago. -
Scott Boras? Yeah, the White Sox have plenty of rapport with him.
-
Yeah, I think close to a 50/50 split with Mccann will be ideal. Grandal is an elite pitch framer but saving his knees and getting him 600 at bats will be better for the Sox IMO.

Big get for the Sox! Will upgrade catcher and possibly DH. Great price as well!

Compared to a lot other options out there this one is starting to make the most sense.

Right now the White Sox have 3 starting pitchers. 2 previous starters are expected back from Tommy John surgery at some point in 2020. Both will start in the minors for at least some rehab starts and be called up when they are ready. One has yet to pitch 15 innings at the big league level and the other has only pitched more than 150 innings once in 5 seasons. The White Sox might get one quality starter this offseason but if they have the chance to get two I think they should go for it. If at any point the White Sox have 7 starters that are healthy and playing well enough to be on a contending club then the Sox will likely be going to the postseason. I don't see this as a problem.

I added him because a was a decent pitcher on a rebuilding team. Not sure what their window for contention is. The price tag would be pretty high I would assume if he would be available.
-
You don't like him?

John Means from the Orioles

Lifetime bans for all those involved!

I know Nimmo has been brought up as potential trade acquisition. What about Dominic Smith? He's left handed, had good offensive numbers in limited plate appearances last year and could fill a DH/1B need. https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2861689-predicting-1-trade-for-each-mlb-team-1-month-from-the-winter-meetings.amp.html

Boston has a lot of what the White Sox are looking for this offseason. Any of their starting three outfielders would be a better fit defensively than any of the options free agency has to offer. If the White Sox swing and miss in free agency the right deal with Boston could make sense for both teams.
-
I like the idea of a trade with Boston that benefits the White Sox in exchange for helping Boston reduce payroll. What about Price, Benintendi, and JDM for a package of fringe prospects?
-
The Astros don't currently have a lot of payroll flexibility this offseason to make a big signing and remain under the luxury tax.
-
He was a gold glove finalist at third in the NL in 2019. Wherever he signs he will be the opening day third baseman.

In the past 12 hours I have read a top five landing spots for Strasburg article on MLB.com that included the White Sox and watched a contributor for the MLB network, Anthony Castrovince, pick the White Sox to land Gerrit Cole. Stating that the Sox only have $53 million committed thus far and money talks. I'm not saying either of these things will happen but it is much different than the start of last offseason. When no one was giving the White Sox a chance with Harper or Machado other than the White Sox.
-
Paxton and Happ were plan b for them after they were outbid for Corbin.
-
I'm not arguing that they couldn't do that or that they won't go over the luxury tax. But stating that the Yankees will have tons of money beneath the luxury tax threshold this offseason is just inaccurate.
