If you are a history/architecture nerd make sure you check out Biltmore. I don't know how much time you have but Great Smoky Mountains (+Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge) is a <2 drive west and Sugar Mountain, Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, and Boone (awesome college baseball stadium) <2 drive north.
