Hawk-Does he actually listen to what spews out of his mouth???
Controlled Chaos replied to gosox41's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Brian @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 10:42 PM) I've gotten the package for the past 5 seasons and it gives me a chance to hear professional announcers, that are NOT Hawk Harrelson. Of course Hawk knows what he is talking about, he has been around the game forever, but it is how you present it. When Hawk is quiet after our opponents score, that just comes off as unproffessional IMO. I think the Yankee guys are top notch. Do they same "Seeeeya" homer call for both teams and gives good info. There good announcers, than there are the announcers for Pittsburgh, who are extremely dull, but wonder if you can blame them. I'd put Hawk a little below the middle. Different strokes I guess. I want a homer...I want a fan. I don't want the same homerun call for both f***in teams. I want the annoucner to be happy when we hit one and pissed when the other team does. He's not a news reporter he's the home team announcer. If he was on ESPN or FOX, I can understand the gripe. Bottom line, Hawk is out there to please SOX fans...Do you think Sox fans care if he is quiet after an opponent scores? I know I don't think it's unprofessional if he has to cover the mic to say a few choice words offline. He's just doing what most other sox fans are doing. -
Ozzie needs to adjust his management of pitchers

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 10:53 PM) i think javy threw maybe 7 curve balls .....2 hung and were ripped by pudge for a single and a double i think (maybe two singles, cant remember, either way both balls were pounded) 1 was hung and pounded by monroe for the slam...1 inge caught off the end of the bat and popped up...a few others were in the dirt or hit for outs The slam was a hanging slider. The ones to pudge were ridiculous...he had him behind in the count both times 1-2 then 0-2 and he throws him this slow curve. The first one was bad enough and he ripped a double, but the second time was just a f***in dagger. You have him behind in the count with a runner on and you toss him the same pitch he smoked on you before. I think that was a key guy to get in that inning. The other spiff is gonna happen from time to time...mags finds a hole, guillen hits a bloop shot, but when you got a guy 0-2 finish him off. I know Javy is always shooting for the strikeout, but a ground out or popout works just as well. I'd love to know if AJ called that second pitch to pudge. oh and I'm not one to jump on Ozzie, but I would have preferred Anderson in the outfield this whole series. Lets jump back up and get em Jose. Can I not say s.h.i.t. anymore? I sure as hell know I didn't type "spiff" -

Thome is more than a slugger White Sox veteran generously gives back to community By George Castle / Special to MLBPLAYERS.com "You give respect, you get it back," says Jim Thome about his philosophy on being a good teammate. Slugger Jim Thome might be best known for his titanic homers, but fellow big leaguers know him foremost as a great human being whose caring spirit extends to the community well beyond the game of baseball. Teammates going back to his days with Cleveland in the early 1990s revere him. In a 2005 poll conducted by the Chicago Tribune, Thome was voted baseball's best teammate. Thome's definition of being a good teammate is as straightforward and uncomplicated as his Midwestern roots. "You give everybody the time of day," he said. "You give respect, you get it back. For me to say why that happens, I don't know. You are who you are. In the game of baseball, you should never put on an act and be something you're not. To be honest, I've been fortunate to have a lot of teammates to follow in that category. "It's been kind of easy in a sense. We're here for the ultimate goal, to come together, root for this guy, root for that guy. When you do that, that's when you become a unit. That's what you [saw] them do last year. To win a World Series, you don't have people who are standoffish. You have to come together." Off the field, Thome quietly and generously gives his spare time back to the community. But in keeping with his character, he doesn't beat his chest about it. "The thing that motivates me is you can be involved in a lot of things," he said. "It's the time you give, your time. When you give something, you want to do it to where you're hands-on. I haven't done a lot of things. But the things that I've done, I've tried to be hands-on with and really make an impact within, not only myself, but my wife, getting my family involved, obviously your friends. That's really what it is, very similar to the team concept. Combine everyone together, create that unity together, try to be the best you can and give back." Thome's caring nature with teammates and community, however, emanates from the closeness of his own family. Now playing in Chicago -- just 150 miles from home -- gives him the opportunity to support his father, Chuck Thome, whose wife, Joyce, died of cancer. "My dad, after losing Mom two years ago, it gives him an opportunity to be closer," Thome said. "Kind of be around the game, where in Philly, he'd come out two, three times a year." The Thomes of Peoria were as sports-minded as any clan in that central Illinois city. Generations before him were gifted softball players. Sports brought the family together, on and off the playing field. When his brother Randy's teenage son, Brandon, was paralyzed from the chest down in a 2001 diving accident, Thome's family pulled together a little tighter. Despite baseball's grueling schedule, Thome visited Brandon at the rehabilitation hospital whenever he had a day off or the team came through Chicago, trying to boost his spirits. When Brandon wished his uncle would hit a home run at U.S. Cellular Field, Thome somehow obliged. "That was just a difficult time," Thome said. "It was a difficult time when Brandon got hurt. I was very lucky, I guess, to do that." But there's a lot more to Jim Thome than titanic home runs.

If this is how they celebrate victories, Chicago is lukcy the Cubs record is as bad as it is. Cubs coach cited for DUI By Jason Meisner Tribune staff reporter Published July 19, 2006, 6:45 AM CDT Chicago Cubs third base coach Chris Speier was arrested for drunken driving early Wednesday after being pulled over on his motorcycle on Chicago's Near North side, police said. The incident occurred about 1:40 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Dearborn Street, according to police Officer Kelly Liakopoulos. Speier, 56, was northbound on a motorcycle when a police officer saw him run a stop sign and pulled him over. Speier was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to stop at a stop sign, Liakopoulos said. He remained at the Near North District lockup this morning. Police said Speier would be assigned a traffic court date and then released on bond directly from the police station. The arrest was made about four hours after the Cubs wrapped up a victory against the Houston Astros Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. Speier is a former all-star shortstop who played for the Cubs in 1985 and 1986. He retired as a player in 1989 and was hired in 2004 to replace "Wavin'" Wendell Kim as third base coach, according to the team's Web site. Liakopoulos had no further details on Speier's arrest or where he had been before being pulled over.

QUOTE(soxpride77 @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 05:43 PM) The World Series is a past accomplishment, besides the title of defending world champions, it has nothing to do with this year. We have the second best record in the best division in baseball right now. To me, that means 2nd best team in baseball. This team is not the same one that won the World Series. Some parts of it are better, some parts are worse. I hate to sound negative, but if we say the Tigers are not the best team right now, then we are doing to them exactly what everyone did to us last year. I think we are a really great but inconsistent team. Until we are in first-place with the best record in baseball, I really don't think we are the best team. I agree that to argue which team is the best in baseball is ludicrous. However, it is just as ludicrous to knock a fan/announcer of a team for thinking his team is the best. I think the Sox are the best team in baseball. I know you may not share that opinion and god knows I know that Detroit fans won't share that opinion, but I would never try to convince them otherwise. My personal belief is the Sox are the best team. They are the defending world champs with the second best record in baseball to a team that is 1-6 against them. It's enough for me, I know it's not enough for all. I'm not saying Detroit isn't good, I'm just saying personally, I won't give them the title of "best in baseball" over the sox just because they beat up on some other teams. It's just my opinion, which is why there's no arguing it.

QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 10:29 PM) a nice win, but I didn't gain any satisfaction out of it when I see Javier Vazquez and Freddy Garcia pitching well again is when I'll start feeling good c'mon Javvy, it's time to step it up tomorrow Dude we just beat the team with the best record in baseball...take a little satisfaction from it and then move on to Javy and Freddy. To say you get NO satisifaction from a win against Detroit is just silly. We pounded out 10 hits, 4 doubles, 3 homers. We had some defensive gems and our pitching was dominant. I'm not saying hang the season on this W, but revel in it a little, then move on to tonight and feel unsatisfied until the end of the game. -
