Javy Vazquez...
QUOTE(Maverick0984 @ Sep 24, 2007 -> 02:13 PM) Since the topic was about Javy can we stop talking about Uribe? It doesn't seem like most people are harping on that but you and 1 or 2 others. I agree with all the backers of Javy. Give the guy a break, he pitched damn good this season. I'd take an above average starting pitcher over a *maybe sometime* above average CF any day. This is Soxtalk. If you want to frequent a site where your speech is restricted to exclusively that of the subject head (and in accordance with the blinding optimistic groupthink) I suggest you visit the site which uses a sock with wings as an emblem.

Pioneer League Top 25
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Sep 24, 2007 -> 12:07 PM) Who else thinks that Poreda has a great shot at being top 2, maybe number one? Jordan Walden, Juan Moreno seem like the closest competition. I looked at the stats and did not see any guys batting that I would take over Aaron. We will see tomorrow, but any one else get the feeling he will be number one? I was going to say that Gindl would be ahead of Poreda based on his age and 1.000 OPS. But that's inflated by a .370 BA. And he's listed at 5'9" -- So he's not the power guy you'd first expect upon seeing the 1.000 OPS. Still a good prospect, just a different one, who probably won't eclipse Poreda.

Pioneer League Top 25
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 24, 2007 -> 02:18 PM) Was he? That certainly changes things then. That, to me, is more telling than his calendar age. Where did he play before? I don't see it on his page on MILB. He was in Kanny last year after a mediocre year the previous season in rookie ball.

Pioneer League Top 25
20 isn't considered old for rookie ball. 22 is. the pioneer league is also the second stop for the Twins, whereas it's the first for the White Sox, so they should be slightly more advanced. Without even looking at the list, I suspect the Twins player to whom you're referring in the Dutch 7 footer, who will be listed for the simple fact of being a 7 foot tall pitcher. That's something you can't teach.

Pioneer League Top 25
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 24, 2007 -> 02:00 PM) I guess it all depends on what the writer(s) of these lists think about age. It's pretty much the largest thing outside of performance that they look at... The AZL list was a bunch of 17-18 year olds, with #1 going to a 16 year old. Here's a quote from the free part of the AZL list

Pioneer League Top 25
actually looking at league leaders, Marrero should make the bottom of the Top 20 as well. 20 yo w/ a 950 OPS and 36 BB in 2270 AB is projectable.... Hunt came on strong at the end of the season, but I suspect he misses out just due to throwing exclusively out of the pen.

Pioneer League Top 25
I think Walden will be one.... But Poreda should be the second pitcher. Moreno will crack the top 20, but I bet he'll be at the bottom, and they call him "a command and control" guy -- Full disclosure: I have never received a scouting report on Moreno, so I could be completely off. I doubt it though. No other White Sox players will make the list. If there are questions asked about them in the corresponding chat, age will be the determining factor that keeps the offensive players from making the cut.

Javy Vazquez...
To anyone with a remedial knowledge of projecting minor league stats (by far the most reliable tool when evaluating young talent) Uribe never had a .360 OBP. You can point to those 29 at bats in 2003, but they hold ZERO predictive power. That's the point, and the reason I told you to check it again. Young, meanwhile, showed improvement at every minor league stop, cutting down on strikeouts, increasing walks, and had a minor league OBP over 350... And his OBP in full season ball average more like .360+. He doesn't have a good OBP this year in his initial major league season, but he's walked 42 times this season, 8 more than Uribe's career high at any level. He walked in about 12% of his PA in his last three minor league seasons, and is an incredibly good bet that he'll figure out how to take a walk at the major league level. There's a very good chance that Young finishes his major league career with a AVG below .270. But if that's how you judge a player, you're gonna end up with a team full of Pierres, Owens', and a lot of "L"s. Young has holes in his game to be sure, but over the course of his professional career he's been able to raise his game at each successive level. Learning is a skill, as is being coachable. Just ask Uribe. Comparing Young to Juan Uribe based on a few counting stats is childishly myopic. Comparing the two based on 29 AAA at-bats in Colorado Springs is just comical.

I didn't even realize that Leitch was the originator of these rumors. Boras probably knew he couldn't get away with this s*** to an experience baseball journalist, so he planted it with somebody "without access," as the site claims, but who is always looking for the big story. I suppose we'll file this one away with the news about Pujols and his trainer, or Pete Rose being reinstated.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 10:34 PM) Did the Bears even try one deep pass the whole game? That was their bread and butter big play last year. One, the double-move that BB dropped.

So in 3 games, we can give the offense credit for... 3 points in game 1 10 points in game 2 (Hester had a TD, and one FG was on a drive of -4 yards) 10 points in game 3 The parallels between this Bears team and the current White Sox one are great.... You've got the afforementioned TJ = Arow MM = Contreras I'd like to add Brown = Pods Grossman = Uribe (there was still some support for him (with reason) heading into the season Archuleta = Erstad (we're awaiting his injury) I'm sure we can come up with some others...

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 09:50 PM) Well, that was predictable. This team just isn't very good right now. Nothing like throwing into triple coverage. To Mushin Muhammad, who is old, slow, and isn't good at catching the ball.

How many times has Romo turned a would-be sack into a first down tonight? How many times has Grossman done that in his career?

In real time, I thought Benson was down. If you knew what you were looking for, you could see it from about 3 different angles, but it was a mess. They blew the call twice, but the Bears weren't going to win even if they did get it right.

The Bears can not score 20 without Hester or the defense putting in the endzone, which is what they'll need to win this game.
