The Bears can not score 20 without Hester or the defense putting in the endzone, which is what they'll need to win this game.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 08:59 PM) Yay Brigs out with a groin injury.... Kenny's on the phone. Need a SS/CF/LFer

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 08:54 PM) also, juan uribe did have a .367OBP in 2003 and a .333OBP in 2001 and a .331 in 1998. .367OBP? surely you jest. Perhaps you should look that up again. .333 in '01? OK, but that's in Colorado Springs and Denver -- Colorado springs average OBP was .341 and the League average was .333... 1998? The Arizona League.... C'mon it's rookie ball. Those stats are about as translatable as Church softball leagues.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 08:47 PM) The WR have played absolutely horrible so far this season. MM is the Contreras of the Bears. Old, slow, unproductive. I really wanted Anthony Gonzalez in the beginning of the second round last draft.

I'm glad the bears finally decided that Hester was a weapon on the end-around (even if you don't hand him the ball)... I've been asking for it since about week 8 last season.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 07:26 PM) Maybe I'm missing something, but can someone explain why the down/yard thing looks like a tear drop on the screen? It's a feather from the peacock.. This is NBC remember.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 05:55 PM) Milton Bradley just hurt his hamstring trying to argue with the ump. If ever there was a single sentence that fully summarized a player so succinctly, it would have to be something about Kerry Wood/Mark Prior getting injured.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 04:00 PM) That defense was f***ing horrible. The corneback played it like crap, and the safety took the worst angle possible. GB is decent, which is probably good enough in the NFC, but I'm still not that worried. Their defense is good but not as good as the Bears', and over the long haul I can't see their offense putting up a large amount of points. I agree on the defense, but their O is light years better than the Bears. Farve appears rejuvenated. They can win games in the 20's. I don't think the Bears can win a game where their opponent scores 20... Not without Hester doing something special, or a couple defensive scores. Overall, the Packers look like a better team right now.

f*** Boras is all I can say.. First of all, were this conversation truly to have happened -- which I doubt -- it would be a blatant violation of the tampering rules. Even if they don't yet own the Cubs, such a conversation should immediately eliminate them from contention. It's f***ing illegal. Belichik would blush at this s***. That's why I know it's bunk.... In the past week Boras has pimped Kyle Lohse as the best FA starter, saying insinuated that Carlos Pena was a $15M/yr player, and said the reason the Devil Rays are a losing team is because they don't overspend on his guys. He's piling on the Rays for not buying pitching when they have 2 proven young talents in the rotation (shields and Kazmir), a couple fringy guys (of which Howell posted minor league numbers that should translate to success), and 4+ very good prospects a year or two away in Niemann (potential), Talbot, Davis, McGee, Price... Add in some Brignac and Longoria to their young offensive core... wow. They still won't be good next year. But in two years, they'll be an 85+ win club with further potential for growth. The guy is a lying fuctard who will say anything to get his client (and more importantly, himself) more $$$. Grade A Asshole. If he said the Sky was blue, there no way I'd believe him.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 03:08 PM) whatever happened to Lance Broadway? He had that real good relief outing like 2 weeks ago, and then just disappeared. I can agree with this... Let's just hope they're trying to remove all doubt that Mike Meyers is ticketed for the glue factory. I don't think Broadway will be successful, given his recent minor league track record, but I know Meyers isn't going to be successful given his recent major league performances.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 03:01 PM) That's exactly what I was thinking watching him there....he's basically going to be a 5 inning pitcher for the Sox if he's in the rotation. Considering that Danks is in the same mode, we better have some quality long relievers next year. Nick Massett baby!
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:53 PM) As you and I always talk about, he lost his mechanics/release point. It was the main reason why I was hoping Ozzie would pull him after Cuddyer's single. If we were in contention for something, I would have agreed. But as it was, I think leaving him out there was the right decision. However, one thing I noticed this season while "watching" his outings on milbGameday: Floyd really runs out of steam around 100 pitches, more like 90. He'll cruise along for 90 then start getting wild, which is what happened today. If he's in the rotation next year, which looks like a good bet, Ozzie has to treat him with kid gloves after pitch 90.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:46 PM) How sad is Pods out there? Ozzie might want to get Floyd out of the game before this goes from a good start to a bad start. We probably shouldn't be babying him. Let's see what he can do for reals... He got himself out of a jam last week and then recovered. If he does it again here, I might believe it's a repeatable skill.

QUOTE(SEALgep @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:44 PM) Value is subjective, and again with the FA pitching market and abundance of CF's available, I'd have to say Vazquez still has more value. Teams don't want to catch lightning in a bottle with pitching when they have a guy at the same price virtually a lock for 200 innings and the same for K's. In fact, they probably still would need to for the spots further down in the rotation besides the addition of Vazquez. So many teams have question marks after the third spot and in some cases the second spot. If I'm a GM with a suspect rotation, I'm probably trying to catch my lightning in a bottle with the CF spot. Besides, let's not pencil Young as an All Star just yet. The average and OBP need major improving before that title is earned. Will he develop that part of his game, I'm sure, but Vazquez is getting it done now, and not many teams would pass on the opportunity to acquire him. Teams that buy on what a player is doing "right now" and fail to see the projectability of young players with track records of improvement are destined to fail.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:43 PM) Was Andy Gonzalez a 3B to begin with? Have you been watching the games the last month?
-
QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:42 PM) well, I haven't been to impressed with him, but it's that Twins magic I guess. Yes. Throwing strikes and missing bats at the minor leagues somehow translates into ML success. It's magic.

WTF GB?
-
QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:37 PM) how does kevin slowley have 9 k's? You do realize that he had a 107/18 K/BB ratio in AAA this year, right? He won the ERA crown with a 1.89 ERA.
-
QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:27 PM) so, is the org. having thoughts about Fields being the 3rd basemen once again, or is it where they are doing anything to get Podsednik in the lineup? We don't have a 3B at all now. Sounds like Gonzalez is done for the year with the cut on his hand.
-
QUOTE(SEALgep @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:10 PM) Not with this FA pitching market. Let's compare.... How many above average pitchers are available at a salary of $11M/yr? Probably none, but you can get close. Or at least catch lightning in a bottle. How many projectable CFers are available at a salary of $500K? None. And Young's salary over the next 5 seasons will be less than what it takes to sign Hunter or Jones for 1 season. That's value.
-
QUOTE(SEALgep @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 01:54 PM) I disagree, I think at this moment in time, factoring both players on the market, Vazquez would bring in considerably more than Young. In fact, I think Vazquez under contract could net a talent like Young and potentially more. You're wrong. 5 more years of improvement under a suppressed salary makes Young a far more valuable commodity on the trade market.
-
QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 01:31 PM) he's like Juan Uribe Sure... if Uribe ever hit 30 (career high is 23), or posted a .360 OBP in the minors, or showed improvement at every level of the minors, or ranked as one of the top 10 prospects in all of baseball, or ever walked at an above average clip. I could go on... It takes an amazing lack of foresight to be such a fan of Jerry Owens while continuing to crap of Chris Young.

Is GB really this good? Are they going to win the Norris? It won't be the Bears unless the find a running game and Grossman comes to play every game. (and by "comes to play" I mean Good Rex plays for the entire game)

Well that wasn't predictable... Easy betting tip: Bet on the team playing whomever is on the receiving end of Sylvester's "Pep talk" The Big Ten sucks. If Iowa was any good -- They're not, if you were wondering -- I would take them tonight. The B10 champ will again be decided by the UM-OSU game at the end of the season.
