QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 04:17 PM) Ryne Sandberg says he was told he was too old in AA to ever make the Majors. Sounds like revisionist history to me, considering he didn't turn 21 until after he completed his AA season batting .310/.403/.469. Sorry 20-year old SS with a .400 OBP in AA, you're too old to make the majors. Nope, doesn't pass the smell test.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 03:53 PM) I have this battle all the time with various folks in here... unless he's 30, age is pretty irrelevant. What is relevant is WHY he is 23 and at the level he is at. There is a huge difference between a player who is in Rookie ball because, for example, he actually played and graduated from college, versus one who just failed elsewhere for a few years. According to what I can find, Paiml is the former - played 4 years at school. Now, looking at his college numbers, nothing seems too huge. And his GF numbers aren't anything spectacular either. THAT would be the reason I'm not overexcited about him. But even just a guy can put up decent hitting, if he is a plus defender (no idea if he is), is better than much of what we are seeing in the system. And I do think Miranda has very high potential. Well, find me some above average major league players who spent their age 23 seasons putting up mediocre numbers in rookie ball and you might have a point. Until then, age is incredibly relevant.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 07:48 AM) Between Paiml and Miranda, it seems to me we might have two pretty good SS prospects at the lower levels. Hopefully at least one of them succeeds at higher levels of the system. Miranda's three years younger and not embarrassing himself at a higher level. I'm not about to get excited about 23 year old in Rookie ball.

QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 10:29 PM) something needs to be said about how Aaron Rowand's attitude, character, team leadership, will to win & charisma has energized the Phillies clubhouse, fanbase, talk radio, and level of play. something else tells me that this subject topic is exactly the message that Aaron Rowand would really like to convey to you HATERS. lets just say that i said it for him. HA HA HA! :masturbatingmonkeysmilie:

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 08:45 AM) Lets see, wholesale changes after 2005 didnt work, no changes after 2006 didnt work. There has to be some middle ground-but trading effective relief pitching just cant be done. Between opening day '04 and opening day '05, the Sox added 3 new members to their rotation, found a closer, and had new starters at SS, 2B, C, LF, and RF. From '05 to '06 they only changed their CFer, DH, and one member of the rotation. Perhaps you should relook at what happened the last time the Sox mad "wholesale changes."

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 07:27 PM) well that was definitely random I would also like the courtroom to know that I would pay money to see that. Not random. It's time for Jeckle to take hostility out on anyone who might possibly threaten the return of The Legend.

So on a line drive... Owens got set up. Got behind it. Then dove for the ball. Then got up, ready to unleash his cannon arm home. Only to drop the ball. At least we know why Ozzie likes him. He played that ball about as well as Ozzie managed that game tonight.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 04:32 PM) Addition - The White Sox' full time scout in the Pacific Rim is Ray Poitevent, who scouted there for the Red Sox for many years. The Red Sox have always been involved with sourcing players from the Far East countries. Poitevint (and myself... A little back-patting necessary) pretty much nailed the scouting report on Matsuzaka...http://www.southsidesox.com/story/2006/10/25/173815/66

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 07:45 AM) I was thinking of Tom Collaro. Tons of K's, but hitting well over .300 with big power numbers. Plays RF. Something to consider as a possible backup OF, if you are looking for one that isn't a speed guy. Well over .300? He's hit .305 in 82 AAA at-bats. Prior to that he hit .257 in Birmingham. And .217 there in '06. And .264 in W-S in '05. Collaro isn't exactly a .300 hitter. He's simply masquerading as one right now thanks to a .411 batting average on balls in play.

I've had that once.... I did it to myself in HS, leaving a lawnmower running in my garage. (not a suicide. I was emptying the gas tank for the winter, and not using my brain. As long as you don't die, it's no big deal. I would totally sue though if I was in her place.

QUOTE(Jeremy @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 12:33 AM) Hmm. Yeah that shouldn't have escaped my radar. Still, I'd consider him good or very good and not elite like Hu. His minor league numbers are certainly good but not mind blowing so I'm not entirely sure he'll continue to hit like this. He hit .400 in the AFL last year to prove he was fully recovered from a broken bone in his foot which hampered his '06. Aside from the second half of '06 when he hit about .140 because of the foot/ankle issue, he's been a .300+ hitter everywhere he's been.

WSOP player wears Sox Championship Ring

I would say this belongs in the sports bar, but that would imply that poker was a sport. -
QUOTE(Jeremy @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 10:15 PM) I wouldn't lump Furcal and Renteria together like that. After exercising the Braves exercise their option, Renteria will have two seasons left at $20 million while Furcal has just one year left at $13 million. Also, Renteria (.336/.392/.487) will be coming off a far better season than Furcal (.283/.350/.374). Finally, the Dodgers have an elite SS prospect in AAA while the Braves have merely an above average one. I'd be shocked to see Renteria moved in the off season while I think Furcal should be available and there's even a slight chance that he could be had at a discount. The Braves have Yunel Escobar who's hit .326/.366/.419 at the majors....

Who would you like to see fired the most?
Gene Honda Civic replied to striker's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Chet Lemon @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 05:27 PM) I voted Walker, but I believe if the team fails to make the playoffs next year, KW should be fired. That ship has sailed. The '08 White Sox aren't going to the playoffs. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 08:59 PM) Owens is not doing a decent job at leadoff, he's doing an incredibly mediocre one. And under no circumstances should be be the leadoff man for the 2008 White Sox. Mediocre? Before Monday's game, he had batted .183/.213/.192 when leading off an inning. He's hit .197/.228/.221 with nobody out, and .208/.250/.226 in his first at-bat of the game against a starter.

Garner and Purpura Fired in Houston
Gene Honda Civic replied to Yossarian's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(bkmoney @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 03:45 PM) never liked phil garner... seemed like a big d bag after the 05 WS. meh Yeah, it's not like he was a D-Bag in the mid 90's as a the brewers manager, challenging Hawk to a fist fight. Or as manager of the 2000 Tigers when the Sox and Pussies tangled twice in one day... -
Curtis Granderson's assault on a 93 year old AL record
Gene Honda Civic replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(Bonderman38 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 08:06 PM) Granderson is really threatening the 20-20-20-20 Been done twice before.... But not in the AL Willie Mays and Frank Shulte (of the one really good season Shulte's) both accomplised the feat in 1957 and 1911, respectively. -
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 04:02 PM) It's one thing to lose....it's another to look like you don't belong on the field. White Sox have a chance at history tomorrow No team in the last 50 years (could be longer, I can't easily search before then) has allowed 10+ runs in 5 consecutive games. After today, the White Sox are the only team in the last 50 years to allow 10+ runs in 4 consecutive games twice. 9 teams have done it once. Since 2001, Atlanta is the only team that has scored 10+ runs in 4 games in a row. And they did it twice, one 4 game streak this year, and a 5 game streak last year. Boston now joins them.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 02:01 PM) What do you mean. Josh has been solid at 3B. He was passable in his first 40 games or so. He's been absolutely brutal the last two weeks. Zero range. Poor hands. Can't turn a DP.

QUOTE(Jeremy @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 11:03 AM) Doesn't hurt to try anything this season but this is the first I've heard about concerns with Fields' defense at 3B. His metrics are good. His bat won't translate nearly as well to a corner outfield spot (though it will be an improvement on Pods). What metrics? My eyes say he's got WAY below average instincts/reaction at third. The only play he's above average at is charging on a bunt/slow roller. Everything else makes him look like a statue. I haven't seen him make a single play laterally that made me think he'll ever have above average range. If he had enough innings to qualify, he'd have the lowest Zone Rating of any full-time 3rd baseman in baseball. Though Ryan Bruan, who's in the same boat, is actually worse...
