  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 05:51 PM) The big point isn't how it is allocated. It is that you have to write a check to Moncada for his signing bonus immediately. Because he isn't allowed to sign a major league deal, it can't be spaced across years. It is paid now. The same goes for the tax money. That check is written now. Someone has to put $50 million, or more, in cash, on the table, for this to get done. All of the other deals we saw this winter are future commitments, which are spread out over years. This isn't legal, or possible, for Moncada. i am flipping around on this. part of me says sign him, a great potential ball player. the other part is saying, that a huge amount of money up front. no protection built in.
  2. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 04:30 PM) The money will be paid up-front since it's a signing bonus, but how the Sox account for the expense is unknown. Most businesses would consider this type of move a long-term investment and would allocate the cost over the life of the asset (or contract in this case). Baseball is obviously a different animal so who really knows. Either way, I think the sacrifice of future Latin American signings of any significance is the bigger reason why they won't sign Moncada. very good, that is why i would prefer that the sox should do what the yanks did and some other teams will do, go over the allotted money and receive the 1 yr penalty.
  3. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 05:45 PM) how about a manager? RV sucks, boring, booooring! get someone who has a pulse. thanks, douglas welcome ...... this season, i hate to say this, will test RV.
  4. QUOTE (black jack @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) Hahn hasn't done squat in almost a week! Heads must roll! funny.
  5. QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 12:40 PM) Are we talking $50 large Up Front? Or spread out over a few yrs? i don't know if any will know that except for those the mlb lawyers. maybe someone knows where to find the answer.
  6. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 11:30 AM) we need a second baseman, and a third baseman, and a catcher? Why the heck did we let AJ go? thanks, douglas Welcome to the best Sox site, let alone the best sports forum. btw merry xmas. i can live with the players we have filling in the positions that you mention. i will get on my boombox and preach. we need another arm. plan and simple, the sox can go no further than the arm(s) can carry the team into the road of the playoff.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) Lol bravo? I'm not taking an Internet stance, just saying the dude is very aware of his splits and might be working on it. I don't think those 100 ABs are necessarily wasted going to him, but I agree having a RH infield sub to play against the toughest of lefties is a wonderful idea. I think it's one offseason too early to say Conor is useless full time. no said he is useless, if fact i like him as a player. however many who are more verse in the advance stats have stated the 3b will be better manned with 2 players. 2 different hitting players. pin pointing my statement i can see, since the other poster is a mod / admin and it appears you didn't want to direct this to him and the other poster just corrected your statement. i can see that. such a classy statement meant to all. Buncha spoiled jagoffs real class.
  8. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 06:32 AM) They sure did. They knew all the money was coming off the books after 2014 and could've just as easily spent on Tanaka last year as opposed to Robertson, Duke, LaRoche and Cabrera this year. That said the theme of this offseason has been: WHO THE HELL KNOWS ANYMORE. I also have done a bit more thinking about the Cuban ballplayers and I'm not sure the kids who haven't even climbed the ranks to superstardom in the Serie Nacional are the same kinds who come to MLB and light it up. That's really missing out on a huge advantage Cuban ballplayers typically give, and that's that they have proven success against very staunch opposition. the theme now should be as i mention in another post, JR's last go around. it was mentioned that JR wants another WS Title one last time. don't get me wrong, i hope he stays for another 20 yrs. Yoan is the equal or better of next yr Brendon Rodgers talent who many expects to be picked #1 or #2 in next yr draft. whether he can come in now or wait a yr for development to play in the majors, that will determine and discuss. as he starts having his private work outs. he may be another great player added to the sox farm system at what lost?? money?? this is a short way to fix a huge hole, the farm systems. the Sox spent money in a short time, yes, i agree. but that money spent is more significant b/c the sox are trying to do a massive overall of the team in 1 short offseason. this kind of rebuild should have taken several yrs and the money would have been absorb gradually. i also like that the contracts are short term of several yrs in length, so the sox can continue to improve thru attrition, as expiring contracts is coming off the books, the sox farm system shouldl start producing the players needed to replace those expiring contracts. Expenses....... hell yesss, but whose fault was that??

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 02:14 AM) Dude, he had a 52 wRC+ (.565 OPS) against lefties last year, which is way better than his career numbers. Conor has showed no signs of being an effective hitter against lefties and it would be foolish to give those 100+ at-bats next year if we're serious about competing. Maybe a Christmas miracle happens and he finally figures out how to hit lefties at some point in his career, but we've done our due diligence and should accept him for what he is currently, which is the strong half of a 3B platoon. BRAVO!!!!

QUOTE (credezcrew24 @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 01:56 AM) I think on that Bonafacio would end up having around 400-500 at bats with the White Sox effectively making him more of a starter than bench player. and that is what would make him a valuable player / bench player. can anyone name a better bench player then him? here is another reason, if / when Eaton goes on his visit to the IR, Banafacio can lead off.

QUOTE (bear_brian @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 08:23 PM) I have a feeling that Bonifacio wants over $4M per year and wants to start. We may not be able to pay that, or we may want to wait him out to see if he can be signed on our terms. DV or Bonifacio, i would gladly get Bonifacio and with his skills set, he will see a lot of at bats.
  13. Happy Holiday to one and all and their love ones. Sox in '16.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 05:16 PM) If we are relying on a rookie who has pitched 20 innings above college ball to make this be a contending team next year we will not be a contending team. i can of see the excitement of signing him and seeing him play, the biggest problem is an unrealistic expectation of what he can do right off the start.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 08:31 PM) I wonder if Danny Valencia could be had from Toronto. I think he'd be a great fit. I wouldn't mind signing Chris Denorfia for his defense and taking him out of the hitters' hells he's been in. C - Brantly/Kottaras 1B/3B - Valencia INF - Saladino/Garcia/Sanchez OF - Denorfia not a bad idea, i wonder how he would do.

QUOTE (bear_brian @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 08:17 PM) At the risk of being highly redundant - since I have posted this suggestion about a dozen times now - the best available alternative for what we need on that bench - RH, infield and OF, possible platoon at 3B - is Bonifacio. He kills lefties, can even play CF. He is not an every day player, and maybe that is what he is looking for, but he fits us like a glove. yeah i agree with you, but i wonder if the FO is agreeing with us.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 04:26 PM) There is no way on God's green earth that after what they have spent this winter, they have another $50 million available to be spent this winter. very true, it also depends on how much does JR want to win on his last go around. but with JR's past rep, it is unrealistic expectation.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 04:34 PM) Stop using career numbers, what a guy did in his 20s doesn't reflect what he did now. In 2014 he put up a .620 OPS against lefties. In 2013 he put up a .566 OPS against lefties. That's who he is now. Read those numbers again - Dayan Viciedo, as terrible as he is, would put up an OPS 50 to 100 points higher against lefties than what LaRoche has done the last 2 years. You can't play him regularly against lefties. You just can't. That's the kind of thing that will cost you a season. and this is the kind of scouting that needs to be the foundation for looking in players to get. maybe it is an unusaual or unrealistic expectation. but that is what is needed.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 04:35 PM) That's about what Tampa Bay should ask for. exactly.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) The fewer games Conor starts when there is a left handed pitcher on the mound, the better the 2015 Chicago White Sox will be. This should apply equally with LaRoche. That's just the reality. Those 2 guys are solid or even really good hitters against righties and terrible against lefties. Removing a terrible bat and replacing it with a tolerable bat when there is a lefty on the mound is a major upgrade. a great example. couldn't have put it better.
  21. but what will the cost be to get him??? Anderson, Montas and Rodon?
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) Do you honestly think the White Sox have something like $50ish million dollars laying around? Because that is the kind of commitment we are talking about. this is kind of a double question. do they have the money >> yes. will JR allow them to spend >> no. but this is the xmas season, anything can happen.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) He will have it about 70-80% of the time with righties pitching. They should get someone to hit lefties though. i think signing Bonifacio will fix and solve all those problems. just tell him to hit right handed. he can spell alot of players and positions.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) Seeing what we have spent already, and what the tax implications are, I'll bet we don't even waste our time. There is close to a zero chance we sign Moncada IMO. and you do have a valid point, i however see it as a great gamble high reward that HASj to be done. Yoan is by all account a top 2 type prospect if he was able to be drafted. getting him for money and a lost of the int'l draft picks for 1 yr. i think that is worth the gamble. the only problem is i would recommend that the sox sign all they can to make that lost of a pick a worthwhile choice.
  25. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 02:42 PM) In an ideal situation, you wouldn't have to count on Rodon for anything, but the Sox were a 89 loss team with a mediocre at best farm system. There aren't enough resources to pay/trade for enough talent to make this a contending team in 2015 without a significant contribution from Rodon. Given the relative ages/experience of Sale-Quintana-Rodon, 2016-2017 is really the most likely time frame for contending. this is a perfect example and post. i agree with you 100%. i was making my statement for those who still think that Rodon can come in and take over a slot and do great. the importance this yr is to have a well verse of hitters and pitchers who can lead this team to the playoff and more. thank you. great post.
