QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 05:19 PM) I am not sure he was "sacked". I think he was probably having talks with Boston and Ilitch's statement was "I've decided to release Dave from his contract in order to afford him the time to pursue other career opportunities." Then Boston sat on it for a month to avoid tampering charges and give the appearance of a thorough hiring process. nice post, but wouldn't that be define as tampering????

QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 04:12 PM) I'm with ya. I can understand them going in the other direction though just simply because Fowler might be a little bit safer, even though he'll cost more. i would rather not loose the pick for some one who may very well be equal to another player.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 04:09 PM) Yet here we are in a very White Sox situation, directionless with limited money to spend and holes to fill with no doubt more second/third tier options. with all due respect, i would rather go with the bold if it means spending money just to spend money.

QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 04:08 PM) What? Reason for optimism? it can be, if they are in some way hiding what the requested cost of the salary.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 03:59 PM) And this is exactly my point. Why is it that mods/admins can't have any opinions? Nobody feels threatened by you, believe me, and age has nothing to do with it either so I am not sure what you are referring to there. If you or anyone else has a problem or concern with the mod/admin team it should be done by pm. We can go back and forth that way without clogging up threads of speculation. and i have said that mods or admn should not have opinions??????? debate is a great form of conversing with a topic.... the topic is sox and the board it soxtalk.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 03:57 PM) So if a mod has a different opinion than you, you feel threatened? That's your fault. Unless you are banned for no reason, this is the "difference of opinion that makes soxtalk so great" nice try..... 2 things 1. i have always been happy if some posters can find fault and i have ALWAYS acknowledge when i am wrong..... i know i can be wrong on many occasions. this is not a competition of how many times i am right or wrong, unlike some hmmmm posters. 2. again i am being pegged out when others have made their statement..... psst where are the so call PM msg'es that last week a admin stated they will dooo. instead of posting this on the msg board. again different rules for admin and mods....

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 03:47 PM) No, I don't see the Sox offering a deal similar to Upton's. And if on the way off chance they did, I can't imagine many of us (on the board) would be too excited. It'd be great to have Cespedes on the team, but that much money locked up for that long? No. some have said that and i really don't think that will happen. esp if the money to too much. i really think if they don't do nothing else it where it will explode.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 03:42 PM) this narrative of yours that the mods/admins are against all and classless is really a narrowed minded and juvenile notion. Many of us have been here for nearly a decade and over and have only become mods/admins at some point because the owner of the site realized that we care about the site and its content. If you want a board that has mods/admins as robots and they dont participate in any of the talk then go somewhere else. Have you ever thought about the quality of what you are posting instead of constantly trying to judge the mod team? guess what.......... everyone has an opinion, and many times it can be different from anyone and everyone else. just b/c opinions are different esp from the mods / admin should that constitute the mods / admin on jumping on them...... poster should not feel threaten if one posters opinions happens to be different!!!!! now if this difference brings out the lack of age of that person, why is it the other person fault. difference of opinion is what make the soxtalk board great.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 03:38 PM) Hypothetically, if Cespedes' camp told the White Sox FO that they would accept a deal exactly like Upton's, would the Sox do it? Would you guys as fans be ok with it if they did? the contract for upton, esp his age, i don't know if i would be willing. i just don't know!!! spending money, just for the sake of spending money is not the right course. look at the yanks for so long and still look at their present state. a waste of money. i wish i can have a right answer but in some respects, i got to give this to the sox FO to do the right thing.

QUOTE (South Sider @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 03:51 AM) Get a clue dude. Thad Bosley's post is an incredibly rational post, and it makes a ton of sense. Chiding him for a well thought out post like that is classless, especially from someone like yourself, a board administrator who should be an example-setter. The writing is on the wall if the Sox refuse to pony up for Cespedes' demands. In this market, whether there are bidders or not, he deserves a contract in the Gordon-Upton range. If the Sox don't pay the price and sign Cespedes, you will see a lot of already complacent Sox fans questioning ownership's commitment to winning even further. No Sox fan should be happy trotting out Garcia, Fowler or Jackson after what our main divisional rivals have done to improve! The Tigers already had a good offense, and they signed Upton. The Royals won the World Series. We have a crappy offense with some promising additions, but there is still no guarantee that this offense won't have huge issues with run production. I understand signing Cespedes does not guarantee a division title or wild card, but mark my words, if the Sox don't sign Cespedes, they will not win either. and the admin and mods should be above the petty stuff...... reminds me of davers.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 03:06 PM) If he went to the Angels on a 6 year deal or the Mets on a 1-2 year deal, can we really be upset about it though? If he stays in New York it's because he wants to be in New York. If he happens to get a 6 year deal, the Sox were never entertaining a 6 year deal anyway. Oh wait nevermind. Of course this fanbase will be mad. excellent point. and that is the wildcard. 5-6 yrs.... too long, 2 yrs must really wanted to go that team 4 yrs and the salary greater than 25 mil. too much money. but at anything else, esp in salary, this is where i will have to trust the FO

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 01:47 PM) It's that time of year - we are releasing our preseason Top 30 White Sox Prospects list. As has become the tradition, we release the back half of the list first... then release the full list plus a list of just-missed names a day or two later. The 16-30 "teaser" article is now up, with detailed capsules of each of those 15 prospects. You can click on their name to go to the prospect profile for more details. What do you think? Anyone not there you thought should be? Who do you think makes up the T15? an excellent list.......... again many thanks for everyone hard work in assembling this list.

QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 02:40 PM) But if they are going to do it, they need to do it all the way. Having a core of excellent players surrounded by mediocrity isn't "win now". It's just foolish posturing. and therein lies the problem. we as fans can see that..... we as fans been saying that for yrs..... but the higher ups in the FO think differently..... money
-
QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) At least that way, the fans know that the team is going to be bad. Then the front office can stop selling false hope disguised as a baseball team. Personally, I think committing to a rebuild is the right thing to do. If you look around the league at the teams that have done that lately, they have themselves in a position to stay competitive for years to come. a great statement in the bold. but guess what...... the FO has been doing that since they brought the team.

QUOTE (Special K @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 02:16 PM) I'd rather have a bad record for 5 years and get better internally than win 81 games for 3-4 years. As far as I'm concerned, there should be no middle ground. Either we're trying to win the division or we should be rebuilding. Not trying to be .500. you make a point, my only response is, the sox stumble onto a group, a core of excellent players that now, they are forced to jump start that clock. thereby making this as a win - win situation ... the win now is now the theme.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 02:03 PM) Because there wasn't much available for 3B and 2B upgrades so Frazier and Lawrie were acquired. Would it have been better to stick with Saladino at 3B, Sanchez at 2B and Alexei at SS? No and can you imagine the amount of complaining that would be going on if they had? Imo, I was fine with Sanchez at 2B but it was time to move on at SS and we all know the Sox desperately needed a 3B. The only realistic alternative for 3B was to sign Freese.... As for Frazier and a potential extension. Frazier is more possible since he has not come out and insisted he is going to free agency no matter what, Samardzija did. All I'm saying is that the possibility exists but I'm not counting on it. In fact, if I remember my words correctly, I have said that it's possible the Sox could extend Lawrie and/or Frazier if they like where they play and the Sox like what they get from those players. Whether or not it happens remains to be seen. As for Engel and Trey, they are too far out to count on or when they potentially project, if ever, into the Sox lineup. Neither have played above A ball yet so its not fair to the players to place any kind of time table on them. May. Unless the Sox find an alternative to Melky in LF, I think May could replace Melky in LF either in '17 with Melky going to DH or '18 after Melky is gone. Hard to say right now until we see what May can do at AAA this year. excellent and thorough in your reasong

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 01:43 PM) If they compete I can't imagine the Sox won't draw... if they suck again well then I can see it. i can and it is all in the degrees of winning..... if the team is assembled and it looks as a solid team, the sox start to win, the fans will come out. that bullpen is great, hopefully EJ will do good, it was become even better. the winning is contagious and fans will come out.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 01:07 PM) There's gotta be a creative way to make a deal happen. Whether it's a signing bonus, a 5th or 6th year option worth around 7.5-10 mill, deferrals, a combo of all 3, we need to do something. this sounds as of a desperation move, i am with any who say nothing over 4 yrs. again money is money and the sox do have it, but wasting it on a 6 yr contract, imo is a waste. 4 yrs, and this still will give the club room to maneuver. or go the cf route in fa's or worst case trade and some of the key prospect will need to be moved.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 08:14 AM) I'd be down for an on base guy. What happened to Jose Fernandez who defected as well? I'm talking about the 2nd baseman. again i will say this, even if the sox does not get Cespedes,, i will be all for getting a player who can help, and if can play CF, so much the better, this will indeed be a better assembled team than last yr. my question is still lingering.... who will be the SS.....

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 03:46 AM) Nothing of quality to offer up, just the usual weak attempt to deflect any criticism of the crack management team of the Sox? Well color me SHOCKED! So unlike you. i really got to admit, this is really funny. nice.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 12:10 PM) But, just for the guys the White Sox have under contract right now, $9.75 million of that is eaten up in salary increases. That doesn't count increases to Lawrie, Frazier, Putnam, Petricka, Garcia, and Jennings (if the latter ones are kept) who are arb-eligible, or any opt-out related increase for ABreu. About 1/2 of that $28 mil is therefore already spoken for. then they have 14 mil.... which if this team is penny pinching should make them happy. but on the other hand, fixing the remaining problems could add additional money to the coffer of the sox.

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 04:02 AM) What exactly has Hahn done to deserve that type of trust? They rebuild for 1 year, go for it the next & half-ass it this year. I see no reason to have any trust for a front office who continuously fails it's fans. The two moves on their own were good but you don't trade 2/3 top 10 prospects in your system & now look at this roster & say "we can compete". I'm sorry but as far as I'm concerned, this team has no direction right now. he is not KW and so far he is trying to get the correct pieces for a fix in sox baseball.,

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 06:10 AM) We need them to move off said "track record". Said "track record" has resulted in one brief playoff appearance in the last decade, and in teams which have driven the organization into the ground in terms of fan interest. Last in all MLB teams in TV ratings and 27th in attendance, and boy oh boy, don't try and lay all the blame for that on the Hawk. He only reacts to what we've all seen year in and year out in recent years. This team cannot and should not, in my opinion, go the long term route of trying to build this thing slowly from the ground up. That's what's called a rebuild, and management has been very clear they are not going to do that. And that's fine and very understandable given the quality and quantity of the existing core. The problem has been what's surrounding the core, which has been exceptionally below average the past few years. With no help in sight from the farm system, fortunately or unfortunately, they are somewhat at the mercy of the market to help elevate this team to contending status. It's a predicament they are in of their own doing. It's not entirely bad, given the current state of the Sox' finances. This team is perfectly capable of bringing on the market value of Yoenis Cespedes' worth. To do so would not be in line with their quote unquote "track record", but here's to ringing in NEW track records! and in addition, 28 mil will be coming off the books at the end of the 2016 season and on the 2017 more will be coming off, with starters on 15 mil of melky. no one is mentioning that. second, while the team is waiting for the prospects to develop and step in, how are we to know if they are a player that can't maintain their weight in a batting avg or no better than a backup???? alot if being placed on these prospects to being a great player.
-
QUOTE (Lillian @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 06:38 PM) Mark, my question to you is; Why would the Sox be any better in 2017? Who will they have then, that they don't have now? I guess a mature Rodon and a rookie Fulmer, but who else? I doubt Anderson will be that big of a difference maker in 2017, and maybe even a defensive liability at SS. I assume that you are thinking about La Roche and Danks being off the books. However, whom are they going to acquire with that money, in the poor Free Agent market, next year? if i had to make a guess, i would say money..... the main part would be salary coming off the books like danks and laroche. second, money for fa's. i would assume the org would be hoping the prospects will be ready to step in.
