Confirming what we all knew.... Scientific Conference Falls for Gibberish Prank By Greg Frost CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Reuters) - A bunch of computer-generated gibberish masquerading as an academic paper has been accepted at a scientific conference in a victory for pranksters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jeremy Stribling said on Thursday that he and two fellow MIT graduate students questioned the standards of some academic conferences, so they wrote a computer program to generate research papers complete with nonsensical text, charts and diagrams. The trio submitted two of the randomly assembled papers to the World Multiconference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics (WMSCI), scheduled to be held July 10-13 in Orlando, Florida. To their surprise, one of the papers -- "Rooter: A Methodology for the Typical Unification of Access Points and Redundancy" -- was accepted for presentation. The prank recalled a 1996 hoax in which New York University physicist Alan Sokal succeeded in getting an entire paper with a mix of truths, falsehoods, non sequiturs and otherwise meaningless mumbo-jumbo published in the journal Social Text. Stribling said he and his colleagues only learned about the Social Text affair after submitting their paper. "Rooter" features such mind-bending gems as: "the model for our heuristic consists of four independent components: simulated annealing, active networks, flexible modalities, and the study of reinforcement learning" and "We implemented our scatter/gather I/O server in Simula-67, augmented with opportunistically pipelined extensions." Stribling said the trio targeted WMSCI because it is notorious within the field of computer science for sending copious e-mails that solicit admissions to the conference. "We were tired of the spam," Stribling told Reuters in a telephone interview, adding that his team wanted to challenge the standards of the conference's peer review process. Nagib Callaos, a conference organizer, said the paper was one of a small number accepted on a "non-reviewed" basis -- meaning that reviewers had not yet given their feedback by the acceptance deadline. "We thought that it might be unfair to refuse a paper that was not refused by any of its three selected reviewers," Callaos wrote in an e-mail. "The author of a non-reviewed paper has complete responsibility of the content of their paper." However, Callaos said conference organizers were reviewing their acceptance procedures in light of the hoax. Asked whether he would disinvite the MIT students, he replied: "Bogus papers should not be included in the conference program." Stribling said conference organizers had not yet formally rescinded their invitation to present the paper. The students were soliciting cash donations so they could attend the conference and give what Stribling billed as a "randomly generated talk." So far, they have raised more than $2,000 over the Internet.

QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 15, 2005 -> 07:49 AM) # 5 - THE NONCONFORMIST 5's are the explorers. Their natural curiosity, risk taking, and enthusiasm often land them in hot water. They need diversity, and don't like to be stuck in a rut. The whole world is their school and they see a learning possibility in every situation. The questions never stop They are well advised to look before they take action and make sure they have all the facts before jumping to conclusions. QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 11:47 AM) Oh, I agree. There won't be an American pope. No way. Perhaps I'm not giving the Catholic Church enough credit. Surely they won't let current politics affect their decision. :rolly Well, they haven't so far. AIDS leaving millions orphaned, dead, etc in Africa and still saying no to condoms (and saying that they don't stop sti's)..... Believe me, Yas, you are not alone in not giving much credit to the Church....

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 11:41 AM) You know what? That really figures. As anti-American as Europe seems to be these days, having a French or German pope would be right up their alley. Hell, I'd almost bet on it. Europe doesn't have enough cardinals, iirc, to vote in a pope without others going in with them. And I can assure the next pope can do much more to harm 3rd world countries (no birth control) than Americans.... Plus, with the recent scandals of sex abuse I don't think an American pope would be seemly or fitting (actually, since Law has been celebrating masses and active lately my respect for the whole institution has gone waaaaaaaaaay down).

QUOTE(mreye @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 11:33 AM) First time I ever pitched in "Minor Leagues." I was around 7 or 8 years old. We had a 5 run limit. I walked everyone! All 5 runs were walked in. That's not the worst part. Well, I'm a redhead and had a pretty bad temper, so I kicked and threw everything I could find in the dugout until I felt someone grab me by the back of my jersey...it was my Mom! She dragged my ass to the car and took me home. I heard someone say I was on deck as I was being dragged. We laugh about it now and I've cooled my temper somewhat since then. That's hilarious. I've heard now that coaches are telling their little leaguers to not swing because the pitchers will generally walk them. Awful sportsmanship.... -

Mine was when I was pretty young. I was playing soccer and for some reason my dad (the coach) put in as a goalie, probably because I was the tallest kid, I don't know. Well, I was about 7 or 8 and not a good goalie--I never really grasped the use your hands during soccer. So, this ball comes at me and I got to block it/head it/no friggin' idea. But it hits me square in the face. I fall backwards. The ball had hit me in the mouth and my teeth cut up the inside of my mouth so it was kind of oozing blood. And then it knocked out an already loose tooth. I was in a decent amount of pain and veeeeeeerrrrrrry embarressed. It was awful. On the plus side, the tooth fairy left me extra for that one AND I never had to play goalie again.... -
QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 10:39 AM) Thanks!! I'm excited also.. for it to be over. We've been living in sin for so long this is just a formality mainly for having kids.. and his mother has been riding us for a couple years so it will make her happy for us to be married. I love them also.. other people's.. Yeah after watching friends and cousin's plan weddings I think that's the only I reason I love weddings: no work for me and a fun party.... Planning a wedding, to me, sounds akin to the seventh circle of hell. But with slightly better shoes....

Betting on the next pope, latest odds... Punters Bet on Old, European, Conservative Pope By Paul Hoskins DUBLIN (Reuters) - Gamblers are betting on two elderly cardinals from France and Germany to be the next pope, according to Irish bookmaker Paddy Power. Odds on Germany's Joseph Ratzinger, who prior to Pope John Paul's death was the number four choice, have shortened to 4-1 and France's Jean-Marie Lustiger has come from nowhere to join him at the top of the list. "Lustiger was at 20-1 two weeks ago but they've started betting for him in just the last three or four days," a spokesman at Paddy Power said. He said a bet of 1,500 euros ($1,931) on Lustiger at 10-1 was one of the biggest so far. To date, the company has taken 7,000 bets worth a total of 150,000 euros on the next pontiff. Lustiger, like Ratzinger a favorite of the late pope and sharing his conservative views, is the Archbishop Emeritus of Paris and the only Jewish born Catholic prelate of modern times. A flurry of bets on Thursday helped boost Ratzinger, who turns 78 this week, after Italian media reported he had initial support of 40 to 50 cardinals and a church official told Reuters on Wednesday that support for him looked strong. POLITICAL MANEUVERING The conclave to elect a pope, where early favorites often lose out in later rounds, begins on Monday with a two-thirds majority -- 77 out if 115 voting cardinals -- needed to win. Feedback on Paddy Power's Web Site showed those having a flutter expect the next pope to be older, ensuring a shorter papacy that could allow a current cardinal to succeed him. "People think there's a bit of political maneuvering going on among some cardinals in order to give themselves a fighting chance next time round," the Paddy Power spokesman said. Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, 78, is the ailing former archbishop of Milan who is said to be winning symbolic support from moderates. He is the third choice at 9-2 followed by the Brazilian archbishop of Sao Paulo, Cardinal Claudio Hummes, 70. Among the relative youngsters to lose ground, Martini's successor as archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, 71, has sunk from poll position on April 3 to number six while Nigeria's Cardinal France Arinze, 72, dropped from two to five. Honduran Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, at 62 one of the youngest men voting for the pope, has also fallen from grace among punters slipping from third to eighth at 14-1. That puts him level with the relatively unknown Chilean archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa, 71, whose odds shortened from 50-1 after a good few bets. ($1=.7767 Euro)

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 08:27 PM) Fine forget it, I might as well delete my post. I see this is still kind of hot. My point wasn't to be a b****, it was just to say that yes, there's a fight in here, but it is not about Andrea Dworkin's ideas and some people supporting them. I don't even know what the fight in here is about.
-
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 08:23 PM) Wow this is a heated one. I'm just posting my opinion, no one has to go by it or anything but it looks as if most of the women are backing up her, while most of the men are not. It's a battle of the sexes, one that will come to no end. So why don't was just respect one anothers opinions and go from there. Okay, not to nit pick, but NO WHERE in this thread did anyone "back" up Andrea Dworkin. Essentially, what Steff and I had said was that fighting her venomous approach with an equally aggressive one doesn't make either party look good. If people disapprove of her so much they should avoid treating people, and using inflammatory and demeaning phrases like she does... So, just wanted to say that NO ONE in this thread defended Dworkin, or her theory....
