(Full disclosure: I'm related to Sam.) Is it possible that Sam's behavior last evening (whether you agree with it or not) was an attempt to stir things up and get the guys fired up? I do get the sense that they're feeling intimidated by the Red Sox, and very tentative.

I'm predicting that, having now lulled them into a false sense of security, we will administer a major butt-whooping tomorrow.

I think Sam thought that off-line throw to first base was going to go more awry than it did, so yeah, a miscalculation on his part. I'm sure nobody was more pissed at him than... him.

Hogan, is it possible that the Sox pitchers collectively want Drew Romo to stay because--- for lack of a better term--- he's good to work with? In other words, that he makes them feel more confident somehow? And although the bat hasn't exactly been on fire, maybe this catcher-to-pitcher rapport takes precedence. Or, maybe that theory is "out in left field?"

Great points, Hawk. I can understand how a guy who is getting paid to talk would have a tendency to want to fill every space with some kind of commentary, but your suggestion about "letting it breathe" is right on. Maybe a reasonable parallel would be guitar players who avoid intervals of silence in their playing, and just keep cranking out notes, either because they're nervous, or pumped up about the gig, or whatever. But it's been said that the notes you DON'T play are just as important as the notes you DO play.

Breaks are a wonderful thing, when they go your way!

Chw42, your post jumped out at me this morning. It reminded me of how success in baseball can so often hinge on random strokes of luck-- getting the breaks vs. not getting the breaks. The bullshit double to which you refer is just one example. I think we're due for some luck of the "good" variety now. We have the skill and the heart. Here we are, July 29, 2026, and the Sox are in FIRST PLACE in their division. To use a worn expression: How cool is that??!! Here's my supremely unqualified take: we CAN beat this Yankees team (especially now that we've lulled them into a false sense of security). ☺️ We just need to get pissed and go after them. I'm predicting that this unique group of guys is going to turn the tables tonight and tomorrow afternoon!

Let's hit 'em back hard, boys!

Tray, maybe Sam, and/or any of the other guys who aren't starting, will get in there later and do something cool!
