QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 03:55 PM) There's a lot more value in having an opponents plane than you get just from being able to fly it against the opponent. If you can just get 1 of them to fly somehow, you can rapidly learn its capabilities. Weaknesses, particular strengths, etc. We've done this with Soviet fighters in the past - it's how we learned about a blind spot on one of the MiG's we fought in the middle part of the century (I can't remember exactly which one). You can learn how to beat an enemy fighter by getting your hands on one of them. Or, even worse, there are technical aspects of those fighters that we don't want falling into the hands of other aircraft designers. There's a reason that we monitor the security of them. If, say a Chinese airplane manufacturer got th eir hands on a full F-16, it would not be hard at all for them to reverse-engineer the thing and produce a version of the F-16 that their own air forces could use. Trouble with that theory is the following. First, the models of F16 we sell to foregin nations is a stripped down version of what our Air force uses. Second, the planes were sold something like 20 years ago and are quite obsolete.
  4. QUOTE(Goldmember @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:32 PM) only if he goes through with it, which he can't, so it's a moot point. i say we should deface them, tatoo "dumbass" across their face or something... That works too. They like drawing all over the governments proprety so why not have the government draw all over their face.

  6. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:13 PM) I don't think half of all reported rapes are false. Is that what you are saying Nuke? 1:1? No. Im saying cases where evidence is lacking its probably a 1:1 ratio. Impossible to tell and thats why the burden of proof is on the accuser.
  7. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:02 PM) Sure, the ones that get caught or whose cases are determined worthy of investigation. Three of my closest friends were raped. One went to the police, but they wouldn't go ahead with the case because of "weak" evidence. The other two never told. Why didn't they tell? So, that's 3 rapists out there scot free. These types of attitudes are the key in their jail cell that lets them walk. Rape is taken VERY seriously but if there is no evidence what do you want the police to do? Without evidence they can't do much of anything and rightfully so. Im willing to wager that for every case like the one you mentioned theres 1 patently false accusation made.
  8. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:00 PM) I see your point now. I've taken self-defense classes and, of course, they tell you to avoid dangerous places. And you know, I'm not saying that we shouldn't say what the victim did, but to be honest, it's not the most interesting or causal factor in this story. Who committed this crime? Who is at fault? Who made our world less safe? The rapists. Yet we first focus on the victim. Why? Because it's a hell of a lot easier to focus on that than there are men and women out there who prey on others. Should you protect yourself? Not take stupid chances? Of course. But at the end of the day, as safe as we like to think we are, this stuff happens all the time. And again, why don't we hear about it when it's a boyfriend, friend, girlfriend, spouse, acquaintance? I mostly get absolutely livid at these news stories because odds of this happening are phenomonally small. I walk home after going to a bar (granted I'm sober), but I'm usually alone and it's late at night. Is that dumb? Yeah. But to be honest, I know I'm more likely to be assaulted by a family member, friend, boyfriend, or someone I know. And how do you protect against that? Because if we're talking about prevention of actual assaults, let's talk in terms of what actually happens. And no one ever tells you what to do if a someone you ever know does this. I've met rapists, seen them in court, university hearings, hell, I've been friends with them before I knew. And I don't know how to protect myself against the nice people that are rapists. They're not deformed monsters or subhuman. I think that's the hardest part of all of this. Acknowledging most rapists are just like us--because then you really wonder how do I protect myself against this? It may be difficult to protect against being attacked by someone you know but that's not relevant to this discussion. What is relevant is that she increased her chances of something bad happening exponentially because she made a stupid decision. Its a lot easier for me to have sympathy for people who don't invite it by being a moron.
  9. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 11:02 AM) Well, what was the FIRST comments about this? Bad girl, stupid choice. As opposed to WHAT KIND OF f***ING ASSHOLE RAPES A GIRL WITH 5 OF HIS CLOSEST FRIENDS? Essentially, focusing first on the victim's behavior reduces the accountability that we put on the perps for RAPING someone. I seem to remember adding rape to the list of crimes I want to see the death penalty enforced on. You are implying that we're soft on rape but thats just not the case.
  10. QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 08:54 AM) So typical... But guess who would be the first ones defending their stupid ass slut bag whore brained sisters if this happened to them... :headshake Not me. I dont play favorites.
  11. QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 07:28 AM) ....and I take one step closer to being the last Soxtalker with NO mod or admin powers whatsoever.... Congrats Soxy!!!! That's gonna be me. They're afraid I'll blow up the place if I ever become a mod. HAHA
  12. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 10:56 PM) I was thisclose to missing a connecting in Dallas last month. Damn travel agent only gave me 47 minutes between flights and I was transfering between American and Delta. Had to go the length of one terminal, grab a shuttle bus, and get over to the other. You couldn't take the train that they have? I had about as much time between flights last time I went through there and I made it with about 15 mins to spare before they boarded my section. I feel the pain of connection crunch times but typically they dont have to clear security a second time. My comments were focused on people who want to leave the house late and not allow enough time to get checked in and get past security. There are tons of them to go around.
  13. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 11:09 PM) I'm hoping you miscounted, if not, you must have mis-read my post. Not to defend the Neanderthals here, but there is a statement, part way between blaming the victim and excusing bad judgment. I would not be blaming her when I say, I wish she had exercised better judgment than trusting 6 members of the US military. No one deserves to be a victim of any crime, especially rape. But I don't think any parent would suggest to their kid to jump in the van and have a good time. I'm not blaming her, but wishing she had displayed better judgment. Maybe this tragedy would have been avoided. Trusting strangers is a bad idea no matter who they are. The fact that they were Marines should be irrelevant. I think a really good question to ask here is how many girls have to be raped and or killed before people learn to use common sense and take better care of themselves? A lot more people would be alive today if they would simply take some responsibility for their actions. Unfortunately in this world we live in being the responsible one makes you the outcast, the nerd, the "buzzkill". As long as that's the prevailing attitude then Darwinism is gonna keep right on picking people off one at a time and Im gonna go right on saying "I told ya so".
  14. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 05:03 PM) I saw that and started laughing. How many other qualified people has the government hired and placed in important positions? And I know Bush isn't the first President to have a loser in such a position, but this is clearly over the top. Bush was a moron for putting a guy like this in charge of FEMA. If you want to put someone in charge of something as a favor you put him/her in a position where they cant hurt anyone not somewhere like FEMA where millions of people potentially could be depending on you.
  15. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:37 PM) I agree that alcohol is the most common date rape drug. (Which is why you legally can't give consent while drunk or under the influence of any drug.) Roofies as in rohypnal (spelled wrong) okay, I'll also grant you that would be rare (although I've known two people that it happened to). But I promise you any medicine cabinet in America has something that could be slipped in a drink and used as a date rape drug. When I think of date rape drugs roofies is the only thing that comes to mind readily. Are there any other common ones? You also alluded to common medicine cabinet type stuff that can be used as a date rape drug. You have any examples?
  16. I find it funny but people who cry the most about security lines at the airport are typically the same ones who arrive at the airport right about the time their flight starts boarding. Like the one knucklehead in the Tucson Airport I ran into when I flew to Washington last month. He comes running up to the checkpoint line all in a huff saying "I cant believe this!!" I asked him what time his flight left and he goes "in 30 minutes". It took all the patience I could muster to keep from yelling out "DUMBASS!" right there in front of everyone.
  17. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:31 PM) Go watch Fox News for about 20 minutes. I think they're still giving her wall-to-wall coverage. No. Fortunately Greta Van Sustern made a name for herself talking about every last minute detail of the investigation for 3 months and has moved on to other, equally mindless, issues.
  18. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:30 PM) Because I'm sure date rape drugs are never a factor in these types of situations. :rolly Booze is the ultimate date rape drug. I dont have stats but Im willing to bet that the use of "roofies" as an MO is pretty tiny.
  19. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:17 PM) refresh my mind... Natalie Hollaway? Dumb ass, spoiled white chick from Alabama goes on a class trip to Aruba. She gets wasted in a bar, ditches her friends and runs off with 3 dudes. Hasn't been seen or heard from since. Big media event follows complete with an on-screen tracker of how many days she's been missing. The prevailing wisdom is that she was gang-raped and then turned into shark food by the 3 that took her home from the bar. This story is proof positive that lack of common sense kills.
  20. QUOTE(Mercy! @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:09 PM) I see this thread as an example of immense progress. Only four dickheads (so far) thought the subject of gang rape was a good subject for a joke or a blame the victim statement. We’ve come a long way, baby. In the cases where the victim does not know the victim Im willing to bet that at least half of them involve a Natalee Holloway version where some floozy gets wasted in a bar , goes home with drunk, horny guy(s) and bad things result. Mercy. Please forgive those who display enough common sense to know that when you're drunk and your friends aren't around that its a really bad idea to run off with a bunch of strangers. We're not dickheads, we just know better and cant help but marvel at how utterly stupid some people can be.
  21. I want to see something in the area of 4 years. We all know what happens when the really long, big money contracts get doled out.
  22. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 09:48 AM) I dont ever want to hear people b****ing about the Red States again.
  23. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 01:17 PM) 6 strange men, 1 chick, in a van? Bad choice. Doesn't excuse it, but that was some very bad decision making on her part. I see you dont have to be a white, blonde ditz to make poor decisions. That being said if those guys are guilty then every one of em needs to burn for it.
  24. QUOTE(FlaCWS @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 11:58 AM) I'm thinking about going to the Black Hawks game Sunday night. It would be my first time to the United Center and I'm wondering if anyone has advice on where to park (does it matter, one lot versus another?) Someone told me it's a bad neighborhood and to get out of there immediately after the game. I've heard the same about the Cell but had a good experience when I went there. Also, this is probably a dumb question, but will I have a problem walking up to the box office on game day and getting one of the cheap seats? I assume the games don't sell out... Thanks for any advice! Want my advice. Dont waste your money. Stay home.
