You're freely assuming the lightbulb would get changed at all. You'd have the gang from the Filibuster arguing back and forth constantly about the spiderweb that is attached to the side of the fixture. The liberals would claim that the species of spider making its web there is endangered and that several dozen environmental impact statements would be required to determine whether the heat and light emanating from the bulb would cause that species to go extinct. On the other hand the right wingers would be advocating a strategy of clear cutting all spider webs within a 10 square mile area saying that spiders are not worth saving and that their presence interferes with commerce and costs Americans jobs and the government tax money. Not to mention that the big nasty spiders were probably planted there by terrorists who are looking scare the bejesus out of housewives. The court case would last for years and the house would remain dark that whole time.

QUOTE(Balance @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 05:04 PM) Um..... Los Angeles levels? When's the last time there was a car bombing in Los Angeles? Maybe the MO is different but Id feel safer in Baghdad then in a lot of inner city neighborhoods. QUOTE(minors @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 05:19 PM) We are winning this war and the insurgency is being crushed. Kudos to President Bush for standing firm. To the President and our Military Personnel The events of the last 2 weeks are pretty solid evidence that our Iraq strategy is now working and will continue to do so. That being said, we have to press our advantage and finish the job of rolling up the terror groups in that country. I do, however, anticipate that troop reductions are going to happen this year, not because of some arbitrary deadline but because the Iraqi security forces taking charge will make their further presence unnecessary -

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 05:05 PM) Nuke, if you want to talk about typical - almost every reaction with people who disagree with you on this forum is the same, you just call them a typical leftist. Well, that's fine, we here on the left are happy to welcome anyone who's interested in protecting the expression rights of any and all citizens. A typical leftist response by the way, would and should be - Why are all these "conservative" people who supposedly run our government so eager to amend our constitution for just about every little thing? Probably because what they want to do won't stand up in court - because what they want to do is contrary to the letter and spirit of the constitution. So rather than take a good look at themselves and realize that maybe their priorities need a change, they just figure the guiding document of our society is what needs changed. SOOOOOOOOOO not true. You and Balta disagree with me and only when we are in extreme disagreement do I bring out the L word. Like I said. The conservative movement has a problem with people burning the symbol that defines our country. They wish to change the law so that it can't be legally done anymore. The amendment has broad BI-PARTISAN support in both houses of Congress. Seems to me that your biggest issue with this whole thing is that you disagree with it. QUOTE(minors @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 05:11 PM) Wow, I assume since I stand with Nuke on most issues that I am a Nazi. All I believe in is not coddling prisoners and people who obviously hates America which burning a flag shows. If that makes me a Nazi then I guess I am guilty as charged. Yeah, dont you just love how having a disagreeing viewpoint from his makes you the equivalent of a movement that was responsible for the deaths of 10s of millions of people? LOL! Its just funny beyond words. -
QUOTE(SoxFanInDallas @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) The Rangers announcers when it happened said the fence at the end of the grass was 490 feet (based on another HR hit to that fence in the past). They thought Thome's went about 470 based on that. But, the announcement was 435. The Rangers announcers didn't buy into that. Not that its that big a deal since it still counts for 1 run regardless if it was hit 401 or 500 in that part of the park.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 02:32 PM) I got slammed so much last year commenting how Pods was not all that good. And wrongfully so. Pods is a great sparkplug for this team when he's on his game but when he's off he's utterly horrible. Pablo has clearly got the hottest hand right now and he needs to be in the lineup as much as we possibly can. He doesn't necessarily have to take only Pod's place but he can be rotated around to a couple of different positions and still get in the lineup.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:48 PM) Nuke, Please find me a specific clause in the constitution that says, the constitution is not reviewable by the Supreme Court. I could not find such language. And your idea that just because something is approved by an amendment makes it constitutional is weak and without merit. If congress and 3/4 of the states passed a law that said: "Islam is the only faith of the United States, any person who practices another religion besides Islam will be arrested." You are saying the Supreme Court would have its hands tied? Look to Article III of the constitution: It says ALL cases. And no where in Article III is the Supreme Court limited in its power from interpreting or striking down an Amendment (we already know that the supreme court can interpret amendments, why they couldnt strike them down seems odd.) When you go to Article V Amendments, there is no clause, provision, or mention that the Supreme Court can not over rule an Amendment. By putting the 2 articles of the constitution together, Article III saying the Supreme Court has the power to hear all cases without limitation, and Article V where the constitution does not place any protection for amendments from judicial review, the only conclusion that can be reached is that Amendments are able to be judicially reviewed. Now the greatness of this whole excersise in constitutional law is, that in the end, it is the Supreme Court who will decide whether or not they have the power. So it will be up to the justices on the court to decide where does the judicial power end. I am not about to go and research all justices opinions on the extent of the judiciarys power. The only thing laughable here is the fact that you refuse to bring any evidence, facts, or otherwise to support your stance. You base your entire post on "I believe" an opinion, and then bring no text to support it. The only reason you think the Hitler references are weak is because they completely destroy about half of the viewpoints you hold so dearly. My early quote where I changed the words slightly shows just how closely you parrallel Nazi views. Once again, go back to the prohibition amendment. Once the amendment was approved and ratified it was beyond the legal systems reach and required another amendment to abolish it. What is your answer for this? ( beyond choosing to completely ignore that point and insult my intelligence instead ). So tell me what viewpoints I hold that parallel those of Hitler? I don't believe in coddling criminals so I guess that makes me Hitler huh? I don't believe in allowing racial minorities to be given an unfair advantage by virtue of their skin color ( SEIG HEIL!! ) . I also believe that if people want the supreme law of the land changed to disallow a certain behavior then they are entitled to work within the system to do so. ( YA WHOL MIEN FUHRER!!!!! ). This is just more typical ranting from just another typical leftist. You see something you disagree with so you throw Hitler and Stalin at those who are proponents of it. Its the same old tired tactic you people have been using for years and years now and it is less and less effective every time. -

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:03 PM) Well its been almost half a day and no one has done any research to disprove my theory that the Supreme Court could review an amendment. Thus I think the end result of this amendment being passed (which I don't think it will) would be the striking of the Amendment as unconstitutional. And as a result the judiciary being given even more power. Anyways I stand by my previous comments that if you ban flag burning, then you have to ban swastika's, etc. And when does it end. A society of the free allows dissent, and as long as they are not hurting anyone, I can see no reason why the govt should destroy the very freedom the first amendment was designed to protect, the right to speak against the govt and not fear prosecution. Although this law would have been really popular with the Hitler's, Stalin's, of the world. I don't really see how the Supreme Court could ever strike down a part of the Constitution as unconstitutional. If something becomes part of the Constitution then it is, by virtue of its being included, Constitutional. The whole purpose of making something an amendment is to make something the established law of the land and place it beyond the reach of any court of law. That's why it's so difficult to make something an amendment in the 1st place. Note that the prohibition amendment, when they wanted to abolish it, required another amendment to do so as no court could touch it. BTW. Your Hitler and Stalin references are REALLY weak and your tyranny of the majority arguments are even more laughable. -

I tend to agree with the Iraqi Defense Minister. Al Quada is in total retreat over there now and their whole organization is in danger of being rolled up by the Iraqi and US forces. The thing of it is the average Iraqi is sick and tired of war and death and want it ended. They realize that the best way to do that is to help stop the insurgency. This is why our forces are getting better intel, this is why there is a bottomless reservoir or recruits for the new security forces. Our strategy over there is working. -

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 11:44 AM) A convention is not a requirement for changing the constitution. There has only been one constitutional convention in the history of the United States, and that's the one that wrote the constitution and bill of rights. Everything else has been done through supermajorities in the Congress, Senate and ratification in the state house. Yeppers. Right you are. All thats needed to make this permanent is 67 Senate Votes, 2/3rds of the House and 38 states to ratify it within 7 years. -

QUOTE(Cknolls @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) Where did you here about the actionable intelligence? Certainly not from ABC NBC CBS or CNN. Actually NBC's Richard Engel said this morning that those documents they found in the Zarqawi house might be fake. LMAO!!!!!!!! And all the people they killed in those raids as a result of the intelligence were innocent I presume???? :finger the MSM!!!!!!! These people are off their f***ing rockers.... God forbid something positive is reported. It never stops does it? The bulls*** never EVER ceases from these people does it? These days its hard to tell who is in a more headlong retreat, the MSM or Al Quada. If I want info on Iraq I'll get it from official military press releases or Fox News. The rest of the media worship Zarqawi and Al Quada and are pulling for America to lose in Iraq just so they can hang it on Bush. -

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 08:19 AM) SS: What Kip is referring to is what is going on now. The Clinton administration didn't ignore Somalia after 1993, it provided some limited support to a couple of the warlords in the country to keep an islamist insurgency from gaining strength through armed struggle. The current administration expanded the program giving more aid financially and militarily to non islamist warlords. The problem is that the Islamist people just took Mogadishu and most of Somalia. Yeah and why did that happen?! Because we cut and ran as soon as the going got tough over there. It was that very act that gave Osama Bin Laden the impression that the US didn't have the balls to stick it out in a tough fight. God, you people aren't very perceptive are you? -

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 08:22 AM) Iraq turning up? When has that happened? Just because Zarqawi is dead? Come on Nuke, you should know better than most that killing that guy will be a blip historically. The hatred is buried too deep. Iraq isn't turning anywhere - it's still the same runaway train. As for Jefferson - good. Good the the Dems. This dude can rot. Not turning up? The security crackdown is working, violence is coming down to Los Angeles levels, the full government is in place, a huge amount of actionable intelligence has been found which has led to raids netting hundreds of insurgents and killing a couple hundred more. You put that all together and it would seem that Al Quada is in the process of being rolled up as we speak. To say that things are not getting better is a major mistake. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:45 AM) You're way off on the numbers. In banner years, I think their foundation has donated something like $2 billion during a year as it's max. The biggest donation in history was the money Gates put up to get the work of the foundation started, which was a $6 billion donation. $20 billion a year would bankrupt him in 3-4 years. Edit: Not to belittle $2 billion a year, btw. That's still a pretty good chunk of change. TYPO alert!!! I didn't even realize it until you posted your response. me:chair -

Back on topic. People love to vilify Bill Gates as an evil corporate villian who is destroying the world and crushing people with his products but thats simply not true. I read somewhere that he gives away like 20 BILLION dollars a year through his foundation. I think he ranks 1st in dollar terms among all the great philanthropists of all time. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:29 AM) So, in other words, you're telling me that there's been a drop in apprehensions along the border since the Guard showed up? Without further data, I'd say it's pretty hard to draw conclusions based solely on that. Maybe the Guard is just getting in the way, and leading to fewer apprehensions? Or, perhaps the presence of the Guard has forced the Coyotes into more remote areas where the Guard isn't @, and where they're finding higher degrees of success? I understand where the idea comes from here, but I have trouble accepting your explanation as the only one without further data. It could very well be right, I'm just unconvinced. I dont think they are in the way at all. They are down there building barriers to entry and their thermal imaging equipment is an awesome surveillance tool. I think the military presence along the border is having a deterrent effect. Granted that it's impossible to tell for sure but it is the most reasonable explanation.
