  1. QUOTE(JoeBatterz @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 12:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Near riot going on in my fantasy football league right now, so looking for some advice. Our semi-finals was held during Week 15 and of course, we had a tie game, thanks to Peyton Manning last night. Of course, we have no system in place to settle ties. Our first year in this league was 2001 and during that year we did have this happen and we went to bench points. At that time, everyone was required to have the same # of players at each position on the bench. This year, that is not the case, benches are flexible and the feeling by most in the league is that is really not a fair tiebreaker. Naturally, the guy who had the most bench points this week is going absolutely postal and flaming our league boards and accusing the Commish of the league (me) of having no F--ing balls etc.. This guy happens to be my brother as well. Yes. I know, how wonderful. The solution which we came to as proposed by another owner and implemented in his other league is to have a rematch during Week 16 of the two teams that tied. Once the winner of that game is determined, their score would be compared to the score of the other semi-final winner to determine the league champ. By the way, the other team in the finals is also me. Thus my reluctance to affect the outcome of the time game. Is this a fair way to decide the outcome? We really do not want to use total points or touchdowns or anything else as we did not declare it up front. Going forward, we will have a system in place in advance. Of course, the guy who wants to use the bench points is outraged and going nuts over this decision. It is his belief that a precedent has been set and it should not matter that we changed the the composure of the benches, even if he does have 4 QB's on it and has an unfair advantage etc... Thoughts? Higher seed wins. That is the way things work. You play the regular season to get the highest seed possible. What is the advantage of getting the higher seed if you don't get the tie breaker in the playoffs? QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 07:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Since my league started using fractional points 2 or 3 years ago, there have been no ties. I know this doesn't help this year, but you may consider it in the future. I disagree that you should just give the win to the higher seed. Here are some suggestions to decide the winner: a foot race between the 2 owners a chess game a game of ping pong E-bay type auction go to Best Buy and have them both play War Pigs on Guitar Hero, whoever rocks harder wins rock, paper, scissors Actually I think coin toss is the fairest way to decide this. Next year, have at least 3 tie breakers! Why do you disagree with the higher seed? I would like to know why this is unfair in your eyes. What is the point of playing the regular season and winning the higher seed? QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 20, 2006 -> 02:14 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Automatic disqualification in my eyes as a commish. Disrespectfulness is one of my pet peeves. No doubt about it. Not only is he/she disqualified for this year, but he/she is banned from the league.
  2. Worst poll in the history of SoxTalk. It is football. It is a Bears town, win or lose it doesn't matter. There isn't even a question about it. To all those that picked baseball or, for some reason, basketball, I would love to hear your reasoning behind it. Please tell me why you people think that this is ever a baseball or basketball town before it is a football town.
  3. This is the best signing yet. I was hoping that they would sign him. HUGE UPGRADE! This should help Pierzynski a lot!
  4. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 03:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 3 things. 1.) Zito will not be leaving the west coast unless it's for New York. 2.) He will be receiving a $100M+ contract 3.) He will also get atleast 6 years from someone, the White Sox refuse to go more than 3 years with their own pitchers why would they do so for Zito? He has a 1.40 Whip as a 28 year, I hate to imagine what that will look like when he's 34 and making $20M a year. OK. I am just saying it could make a lot of sense from the give and take scenario. If he gets 6 years or 20 million a year someone has a lot of explaining to do. He is not that type of pitcher. Someone will be regretting that.
  5. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 11:53 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have compiled the quotes below but to read the articles, just use the links at bottom. Discuss. ================== "We're not trying to pretend we have all the answers, but we have a plan and hopefully that plan will turn out kind of [like it] trended before," Williams said before leaving baseball's winter meetings. "Where eventually it will be proven we're making the right moves and when we decide to make a move with those guys, we'll be idiots for acquiring them and idiots for letting them go." "We have nothing going on," Williams said before leaving with club Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. Williams admitted the Sox were "close to about four or five things, but they didn't materialize for us for various reasons." "I've tried to explain our mission statement over and over, but I'm kind of resigned to the thought that whatever we do isn't good enough or understood," Williams said, shaking his head. "So I honestly can't worry about it too much. I have to do what I think is in the best interests of the organization." "In the case of Joe Crede, how many times did you hear get rid of Joe Crede?" Williams said. "Jon Garland. Don't bring in A.J. Pierzynski. What are you doing with Scott Podsednik? Are you nuts? Juan Uribe, he can't play shortstop. Aaron Rowand, he can't play center field. And then when I traded Aaron Rowand, it was like 'What are you doing? You traded the best center fielder in the game.' "I can't combat all of it. If you do, you're going to be squashed by the pressure of it all. I just try to make informed decisions. Our guys get around and talk about a lot of things. Like you guys do in the bar about your end of the industry." "But you know what would be more unpopular?" Williams said. "It would be if we did nothing and got old and got too expensive and then had to go out scrounging for leftover talent and overpaying for mediocre talent." "Well, I know they are both plus-arms," Williams said. "One of the things you have to deal with is that hopefully his growing pains are out of the way. They all go through it. "One thing we have to offer from an offensive standpoint is we can give a pitcher a little run support." http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines =================== "We could not continue to operate in the manner I've been operating for the last few years, which has been target, target, target, veteran player, veteran player," Williams said Thursday. "First of all, those deals aren't out there right now. You are going to run into a brick wall, sooner or later." An AL executive said the Sox had asked for Mets reliever Duaner Sanchez and top pitching prospect Philip Humber and the Yankees' Philip Hughes and Humberto Sanchez in proposals for starting pitching http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines ==================== http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines =================== "Just remember that you don't judge an off-season by what you have at the end of the winter meetings," a White Sox executive said Thursday. One long-time GM speculated the Sox could be clearing the decks to land Barry Zito or Barry Bonds, who re-signed with the Giants late Thursday. The path that might make the most sense is to use Brandon McCarthy at the top of a package to pry outfielder Carl Crawford away from Tampa Bay. If not Crawford, then Rocco Baldelli, who wouldn't be quite as costly. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...cs-home-utility You know, that Barry Zito thing kind of makes sense. If we trade Buehrle to add more pitching prospects and free up his money and Garcia's money we can then sign Zito and trade some pitching prospects for Carl Crawford. We would then have a rotation of: Contreras Zito Garland Vazquez McCarthy and then a lineup of CF/LF Crawford 2B Iguchi DH Thome 1B Konerko RF Dye C Pierzynski 3b Crede SS Uribe LF Podsednik/ CF Anderson Not too shabby at all.
  6. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 03:40 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> well I hope kenny can rise above such pettiness when he is trying to (hopefully) win every year and get this franchise in the spotlight for good.....yes Kenny has age issues, but he can give us 100 games in CF (platoon him with Anderson if required) and fixes our speed on the bases at lead off problem too. And he is pretty good at fielding still....and he played for us too, though I understand that is where the baggage with Kenny comes from. I don't. I hate Lofton too. For the little bit of time he was here he was one of the most selfish ballplayers I have seen. I can't stand him. I remember when he was supposed to sacrafice bunt and he wouldn't. He kept trying to get the perfect bunt down and get a base hit out of it. He bunted/fouled out. That one play soured me on him forever. I never want to see him back in a White Sox uniform. EVER!
  7. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:33 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, if Tampa wants a veteran starter, it would have to be Vazquez or Garland, as I doubt Tampa has little use for pitchers with expiring contracts (i.e. Buehrle or Garcia). With that being said, I still think they are looking for young and cheap pitching. The Cole Hamels rumor was false: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6177726 Baltimore Orioles, it doesn't list any names but they are very far apart: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6120501357.html So they may wish that Baldelli will get them their asking price, but they can wish in one hand and s*h*i*t in the other and see which one fills up first. QUOTE(Frank the Tank 35 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:42 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Roto: There is no way Atlanta is parting with both Davies and Ramirez for Baldelli. There is also no chance the Sox part with McCarthy for Baldelli. If it is Crawford yes, Baldelli, no. It is wishful thinking on TBs part. There is no way they get it.
  8. Well someone pointed out that they are asking for Chris Ray, so if that is the case Baldelli is staying in Tampa. The Trib says that Maddon indicates he wants a veteran starter. If it takes Vazquez, who is rumored to be going to the Mets for Milledge, to get Baldelli then I do it. Baldelli>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Milledge. Not even close. The White Sox would be a better hitting, faster, would not lose anything on defense, and would have McCarthy taking over for Vazquez. I don't see how it gets any better than that.
  9. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:25 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> listed at 200 lbs there, Chief. Have you ever seen him play? I have seen 6'4" 185. That does not sound like a roider to me. I think Hillegas was exagerrating a bit on purpose to prove a point and to say that he is very skinny - not a roider. However, that is just my opinion.
  10. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:14 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> From the St. Petersberg Times If that is really what the Rays are seeking in return - Chris Ray - then Baldelli is staying put. They are highly over estimating his value.
  11. QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:10 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just to put an idea on value...The Rays offered Baldelli to Philly for Cole Hamels. That gives you an idea what we'd need to give up. Ummm, he may have been offered for that, but why would the Phillies wnat that? I have trouble believing this story anyway. They Phillies have a CFer - Victorino - plus they are looking to deal their surplus of OF'ers for starting pitching help themselves. That is just silly. It may be what they are asking for, but if everyone is saying no, then that is not what they will get in return and it is not Baldelli's true price. They are going to have to settle for less than a Cole Hamels. There is no doubt about that.
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:48 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Tampa's asking price is insane for Rocco. From the sounds of it, they'd want two top prospects like Fields and Broadway. Really? Where did you hear that from? That is insane. From the article I just read they are looking for a veteran starting pitcher for Baldelli. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews...ts/16174647.htm I am trying to figure out if what you say is fact or speculation. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:56 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I see it as .339 in 2006 .326 in 04 and 03 The .368 was in 183 AB's in the lead off spot. That was the first year he was a lead off hitter, spending most of his time in the middle of the order in 03 and 04 Could it also be that he ws 21 in 03 and 22 in 04 and that he is getting better as he gains more experience? The guy has a ton of talent with a ton of potential and very high ceiling.
  13. I really don't understand our interest in Rowand. I think Sweeney and Anderson are both better than he is in CF. Plus Rowand was no great shakes in the lineup, so what is the big deal? How does he help our team get better? FLoyd and Madson do absolutely nothing for me. We have no use for either one. Floyd has been in the majors twice and has wet his pants both times. Madson is nothing at all. He may be a decent bullpen guy if anything, but a 4th OF'er and a decent relief pitcher is not what I want to get in return for a top notch starter. That is just ridiculous. Jimmy Rollins is where the conversation should start. If they are unwilling to part with him then hang up the freakin' phone. We don't need anything else that the phillies have to offer. I take that back - Cole Hamels would be a nice addition as well. Either one of those 2 guys is where the conversation should start. Then go from there.
  14. It is pretty tough to rank them because they are so different. Vince Young has the most all around talent, Leinart is in the best situation, and Cutler has the best arm. Then it depends on how your rank success. Is success the one with the best stats or the most rings? Is Dan Marino better than Joe Montana? I think Young will be Randall Cunningham, Leinart will be Montana, and Cutler will be Jeff George. If that is the case, I will then ranke them: (1) Leinart (2) Young (3) Cutler I think all will be better than Eli Manning or Michael Vick. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
  15. Earlier this morning on ESPN radio AM 1000 it was reported that the White Sox may re-acquire Aaron Rowand during the winter meetings this week. I love Rowand and I think he is a great guy, but I would have to ask why. Why would that make sense? Anyway. I am just reporting on what I heard on the radio this morning and I didn't see it posted anywhere. If it has already been posted then I am sorry for the repeated information.
  16. QUOTE(Wedge @ Nov 29, 2006 -> 10:40 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If you say "NO" provide the 10 teams that should go ahead of ND. 1. Ohio State 2. USC 3. Michigan 4. Florida 5. LSU 6. Louisville 7. Oklahoma 8. Arkansas 9. Boise State 10. Auburn
  17. I don't see where this is a bad deal for the Angels. We should not be asking what more we can throw in, we should be looking for more from the Angels. Chone Figgins and Ervin Santana is not enough for Joe Crede and Freddy Garcia. I am sorry, it just isn't. The Angels desperately need a 3rd baseman. Joe Crede is a proven all around talent at 3rd base and plays at a very high level. Freddy Garcia is a proven workhorse pitcher and big game pitcher. If they throw in anything less than Brandon Wood or Erik Aybar then this deal is not getting done for me. At the very least they must give us Brandon Wood/Erik Aybar, Chone Figgins, and Ervin Santana for Joe Crede and Freddy Garcia. If not, I walk away.
  18. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 12:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's not as good as I thought it was initially, but it's still a fair comparison in my mind. How so? If healthy a Mark McGwire, at the pace he was at, with 600 more games played or 6 more seasons would have demolished the numbers of a Harmon Killebrew. Not a fair comparison at all.
  19. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 11:26 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> McGwire - .263/.394/.588/.982 and 583 career homers in the juiced ball era Killebrew - .256/.376/.509/.885 and 573 career homers in the raised mound era Killebrew was elected to the HoF 9 years after retirement Based on numbers alone, McGwire shouldn't be a first ballot Hall of Famer. Add in the steroid controversy, and there's question that he should get in as quickly as Killebrew did. Anyone can skew stats to say what they want, but lets be a little more fair. Killebrew put those numbers up over 22 seasons and 2435 games. McGwire did near the same over 16 seasons and 1874 games. This is not a fair comparison do you think? QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 11:54 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Then he ought to sit down, preferably under oath, and answer questions about it. And not just about him, about his teammates as well. These guys want to be rewarded for possibly tainted performances, then they ought to help MLB and the US construct a complete picture of exactly what happened, who was tainted, what they knew, what they did, and when they did it. Otherwise, I hope the HOF voters use their best judgement on who was dirty and who was clean and vote that way. Why would he sit down and talk about himself or his teammates? I for one would not do that. I would definitely not sit down and give up my teammates for any reason. That is a ridiculous statement to make and a ridiculous suggestion. Anyone who has any sort of backbone would never agree to do that. And who says McGwire cares or wants to be in the hall of fame? Who says he wants to be rewarded? Did he? I have never heard him say that. Get over the freaking steroid issues. It is just another period in baseball that has come and hopefully went. Just deal with the fact that in certain periods certain players had advantages and disadvantages over players in other periods. That is just the way things are. Deal with it.
  20. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 05:11 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Maybe because uber prospect Alex Gordon is almost ready, Teahen's value is pretty high and Dayton Moore wants to build the team around young power arms? Don't be so quick to jump down everyone's thoughts. And what young power arms are the Cubs giving up for Teahen? Not jumping down anyone's thoughts. It just seems a bit remarkable to me that this guy seems to be finally coming around and has finally developed and they are now looking to trade him? Alex Gordon is most definitely ready and he is awesome defensively as well. However, they can play both of them. They can put Teahen (a 25 year old left handed bat who is making near minimum) in LF and play Gordon at 3B. There is no reason at all for them to trade Teahen. It just doesn't make sense.
  21. QUOTE(MarlinFan84 @ Nov 5, 2006 -> 03:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> LF/RF-Murton, Carlos Lee I heard wants to play for the Cubbies, so Murton would just switch, Cedeno/Izturis @ 2b/SS, probably resign Pierre if push comes to shove. Wouldnt be suprised to see them deal for someone like Teahen for 3B. Not as many holes as you think. Theres a good Japanese League 3B that is going to be posted as well, with a low posting fee. The Cubs could gobble him up. How the hell are they getting Teahen? Are you just throwing names out there? Why would the Royals deal Teahen? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
  22. Is this his first Tommy John surgery? I recall hearing that he had elbow and arm troubles with the SF organization. I don't remember what exactly it was though.
  23. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 3, 2006 -> 09:12 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Kinda funny how you think thats true, yet D Lee was out most of the season, and playing first base were alot of first time players of that position. Truthiness is better than your land of stats and facts. You used a little truthiness yourself I may add. John Mabry, Phil Nevin, and Todd Walker were the players that were at 1st base during Lee's absence. Not one was a first time player of that position. Not one. Lee still played more than any other player at 1st base for the Cubs last year. Just for the record John Mabry, Phil Nevin, and Todd Walker all had higher fielding percentages than Derek Lee at first base last year. They all made less errors than Derek Lee last year. The innings played aren't that far off either. Derek Lee played 393 innings at 1B for the Cubs last year. The rest are Mabry 352, Walker 311, and Nevin at 282. By the way Nevin didn't make any errors. We all know Derek Lee is WAY better than all three of them at his position. Stats can't tell you how good a player is defensively. Please stop using them in that way. Just watch them play. Please don't defend Ramirez's defense. We both know he sucks just by watching him. He had an easy pop up bounce off his big freaking melon head. We all have bad days, but come on.
  24. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 09:32 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No it doest make him a good fielder, as i said, he isnt that great, but he isnt a dog either. And errors does contribute to what kind of a fielder you are, and its one of the ways to look at how good a player is at his position. Your cub hatred has gotten in the way of recognizing that A-ram is actually a really good player. He is one of the better hitting 3B and is passable at 3B. My Cub hatred has not gotten in the way of seeing A-Ram as a good player. He is a below average all around player. He is horrible at fielding his position and is awful running the bases. Can he hit? Yes. Most of the time. That does not make him a good player. He is the 3rd base version of Carlos Lee. He will make any team that he ends up on worse, because overall he is a below average player that is going to be making above average player money. My Cub hatred did not get in the way of this, my own two eyes have. I have seen him play a lot and he is, in every sense of the word, a dog. Stop looking at the stats and watch him play for about a week or 2 straight and you too will come to that conclusion. Oh, and errors can be a good way to tell if someone is good at fielding their position or not, but you have to take other things into account such as his awesome first baseman saving his ass from having 3 times the number of errors that he should have. There is not a better defensive first baseman than Derek Lee and he saves him a lot of errors. This is a luxury no other 3rd baseman has and he still looks horrible playing his position.
  25. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 04:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i was at work and typed fast. missed the hyphen. my bad. if you want to extrapolate that out to idiocy and ignorance rather than some haphazard typing, well that's certainly your prerogative. i'd guess most would see it differently. anyhow, great to see hinrich back. And you think every time that mistake is made around here and every other place that I have seen it, it is because of "haphazard typing?" I think not, but that is certainly your prerogative. I'd guess most would see that differently. It seems like a common mistake people make and it shouldn't be made because when the hyphen is excluded the meaning is now the complete opposite of what you want it to mean. I compare it to watching the people on talk shows that repeatedly say conversate instead of converse. There is no such word as conversate, yet the same ignorant people use it over and over again and they make themselves look like idiots.
