QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 04:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Seriously? He is a bad player because he had a slow start, hilarious. I guess once the two months were over and the cubs were out of it he decided to start playing, because thats how he is, he only plays when it doesnt matter. Lets totally ignore his career numbers of .275 .330 before the all star break and .285 .335 after the break, because of course, he only plays when it doesnt matter. Of course in 2004 when it didnt matter pre all star break he was .326 .374, and post .308 .372, because of course, it just didnt matter. 2005 .298 .356 before the all star break was terrible because he only plays when it doesnt matter. I mean, one year of having a slow start and now his career is defined by only playing when it doesnt matter. Defensively he is not the best player on the field, but a dog? Hmmmm. Well lets see who had a worse FPct at 3B than A-ram: Encarnacion C Tracy A Rod B Inge P Feliz G Atkins D Bell D wright C Jones M Cabrera M Mora A boone T Glaus M Teahen M Izturis B upton H Blalock M Ensberg C Figgins N Punto A Marte He also had the same Fpct as S Rolen and R Zimmerman. A-ram also had only 3 more errors than Joe (Gold Glove) Crede. Overall he ranked 5th in FPCT by a 3B who played more than 100 games. Those in front of him: E Chavez, M Lowell, J Crede, A Beltre. Does that do enough to address your point about his defense? Fielding Percentage makes you a good fielder? Since when? Having less errors makes you a better fielder? Since when? There is no way to realistically base the quality of a players defense with statistics. Use your two eyes instead of stats. Like I said, get your stathead out of your statass. He also has one of the best and tallest defensive 1st basemen in the game which helps him out a lot. He is without a doubt a dog on the basepaths and a dog in the field. There is no doubt about that. He is the Carlos Lee of 3rd basemen. If you think that is a good thing then so be it. I don't. Any team without Carlos Lee and/or Aramis Ramirez is a better team.

Hinrich re-signs with the Bulls

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 08:34 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I just think it's ridiculous that you're correcting grammar on the internet. To my knowledge, I use correct grammar here all the time. I just don't tell people to do the same. And my opinion differ from yours. Maybe if you did you would help someone out that didn't know any better instead of turning a blind eye to it and keep on letting the person look like an idiot. Resign and re-sign are two completely different words. Help someone out that is ignorant to that fact instead of letting it continue. How ridiculous is that? -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 09:56 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wow, pretty ignorant way to look at a player. Im not sure if the season EVER mattered for the cubs, but a player who put up the season long numbers like he did is a top player. What if he started out hot and got cold, would he then be a better player? Then you would say he didnt produce when it mattered at the END of the season. The guy flat out rakes, deal with it. Pretty ignorant? No sir, that would be you. You are ignoring the fact that he plays horrible defense after I have repeated this fact time and time again, yet you have no defense for that. That is ignorant. Did it matter in the end last year when he produced? NO! If it did and he produced then I would say he produced when it mattered - in the end when he was counted on. The Cubs season only had a chance in the beginning. He did not produce, for whatever reason that may be, when the season actually mattered and his team had a chance. He flat out rakes when the season doesn't matter any longer. Other than that - he is a bum both defensively and offensively. Deal with it. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 01:37 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Really? Mildly? OPS's in the first 3 months April - .716 May - .791 June - .801 He wasn't putting up cleanup hitter's numbers, but you make it sound as though he was flat out horrible. That just isn't the case. So had he come out of the gate like a racehorse, and then finished with those numbers, then what? Injuries and a lack of talent killed the Cubs, not Aramis's mediocrity in the first half. I've already pointed out in another thread that his slugging in close and late situations is generally high, and he was solid as hell in the 2003 playoffs. Add to it his consistently solid numbers with RISP, and I still don't buy this argument, and I never will. He's not great defensively, but he's a hell of a hitter. All the numbers indicate that. Oh yes, lets just ignore the defense part. Not great? He is HORRIBLE! I don't care what the numbers say. I have two eyes. I have seen him play a lot of games. He is a dog. Get your damn statheads out of your statasses and watch him play a freaking game. Use your eyes.

Hinrich re-signs with the Bulls
southsideirish replied to thedoctor's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 06:11 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, not writing re-sign is almost as ridiculous as someone seeing the headline and thinking, "My gosh, Hinrich has resigned from the sport of Basketball." Oh, let me see if I can read the entire post that was written: In this particular instance it wasn't difficult to figure out. However, this is a common occurrance. In some instances it IS very misleading in the headline of a topic. I am very sorry if I insulted you Milkman, but sometimes it is better to be corrected and possibly learn from mistakes rather than keep on doing the same crap over and over again even though it is wrong. Possibly you did not know this and you are now trying to put me down because you didn't. That is fine, but at least you know now. Plus if you resign your position you are not necessarily resigning from your profession. In most cases you certainly are not. If he would have resigned from the Bulls he could and most probably would sign with another team. This happens all the time. I'm surprised you did not know this as well. I am not saying it happens with players on sports teams, but it is common in all professions. A possible example for a professional athletic team is Aramis Ramirez with the Cubs. He basically resigned his position with the Cubs. He may or may not be back with the team, but he will definitely sign on with some other organization in professional baseball. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 01:41 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, im sure that he is a bad player because he had a slow start, im sure that is totally what type of player he is, blah blah blah 30 hr's 100+rbi's you can paint it any way you want to. The guy can flat out produce. Slow start is putting it mildly. Playing badly when it mattered including piss poor fielding would be putting it correctly. The guy produced at the plate only when it doesn't matter and never produces in the field. He was only decent 2 years ago in the field because Derek Lee came up with a lot or errant throws that would have been errors on any other team without huge and nimble Derek Lee playing first base. He will lose a lot of games for any other team including the Angels and that is why I would love to see this loser on that team. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 01:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You know, a lot of teams would like a guy who is a good 2nd half hitter. Yeah, but then you will have to put up with his horrid defense at a particular critical defensive position. Just another observation. I got it, I got it, OUCH! My freaking oversized melon is killing me. Plus his lazy ass never runs or plays very hard. I have 2 eyes that see much more than stats while watching a baseball game. I would love for them to sign Carlos Lee and re-sign Aramis Ramirez. They will put up the stats but that would be one losing mix for sure.

Hinrich re-signs with the Bulls
southsideirish replied to thedoctor's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Guys, it is re-sign, not resign. He re-signed the contract with the Bulls. He did not resign his position with the Bulls. Please, it really isn't that difficult. The two words are pretty much complete opposites, so to put the wrong one in the headline of a topic can be very misleading. Anyways, it is very nice to see. I am a big fan of Hinrich and what he brings to the team. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 11:57 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I didnt know he wasnt there to pitch in the rotation when they needed him most. When Derek Lee went down Aramis was expected to pick up some of the slack. As was stated earlier, he didn't. He had a good late second half when the season was over. Meaningless numbers. Plus he is absolutely horrendous fielding 3rd base. He tried to catch an easy pop up and it bashed him right on his big freaking melon head. No, I would not want him on my team. I would love to see him with the Angels. He is not a winner. In fact he will make a good team lose.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 04:53 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't know the Thomas quote you're referring to, but the rest is flat wrong. In this article, Chavez, Kotsay, Zito, Kendall, and Haren all have uncomplimentary things to say about Macha. That's not even mentioning Melhuse's comments. I know a lot of people here despise Beane, but using this to tee off on him is ridiculous. Nice quote from that article: Maybe Zito can be coming over here because of Ozzie. Maybe we will be getting free agents because of Ozzie and not losing them because of Ozzie like some have suggested.

World-wide Popularity of Joe Crede in the Internet

QUOTE(vandy125 @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 07:23 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> And we still won the title. I'm not saying he's doing things perfect like some seem to think he needs to do, but I think he has a better handle of what is happening in that clubhouse than any of our armchair managers ever will. He seems to be held up against an impossible standard. If we went 162-0 some people would still complain that he overused the starting pitchers or that he almost blew a game by making a stupid mistake in putting someone in (how dare he). We seem to have a lot of psychics here who know what will happen when certain pitchers or hitters get put in. Inevitably someone predicts doom and gloom on every move. When it does not happen, they do not say they were wrong, or they admit it quickly and move on. When it does happen, they point to it and say "See, we all predicted that would happen. Why would he do such a dumb move?" They then go on and keep pointing to it weeks, even a year later as an example where their doom and gloom actually came true (imagine that ever happening). The same thing does not happen with their other predictions where they "admitted" they were wrong. Nah, if we went 162 and 0 and won the world series people wouldn't be complaining about the moves he made. They would be complaining about how he spoke harshly to Brandon McCarthy or Brian Anderson because these kids need to be treated more gently. WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!! BOO HOO!!! Don't yell at me! Don't talk about me in the papers or to reporters! I'm being thrown under the bus because I can't hit so good, WAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!! Give me a freaking break. And the thing is, I have not heard Brandon McCarthy, Jon Garland, or Brian Anderson saying anything bad about it at all. I don't see or hear them crying about it. The only people making it a big deal are the fans. Kind of strange if you ask me. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 07:35 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I thought I recalled him agreeing to go to winter ball a few weeks ago..... Ah yes, Brian had agreed by August 15th. http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/chicagotribune...prospect+status It's not free, but if you do a Google news seaerch on "Brian Anderson" and "winter ball", you see near the bottom of the page that "Anderson said Tuesday he has consented to playing winter ball, which will ... " on August 15th. He did, so my guess is that a reporter asked him what he thought about Brian Anderson not being so keen on the idea of winter ball or something to that effect. Then Ozzie gave his response. But wait, Ozzie probably shouldn't have said anything right? He should have just kept his mouth shut and kept everything in house right? Yeah, ok. Like all the great coaches do. Like Bill Parcells has done this year and in the past, right? Whatever.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've seen plenty of grounders that Anderson hits in the hole where he still gets thrown out. Ozuna gets down the line much faster than anyone else on our team. uh oh - maybe it is effort? Ozuna also seems like he tries harder than anyone else on this team. I am not saying it is true, I am just saying that is what it seems like.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:25 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry, but you cant teach speed. Give me a guy with blazing speed that isnt dense a rock over a guy with decent speed but a great first step. A guy like Christian Guzman had unbelievable speed, but I believe either he was too stubborn to even learn how to really steal bases, or he was just flat out lazy. Willie Harris? How did he work out with stolen bases? How is Gathright? He looks awful stealing bases. Where did I say you can teach speed? You can't teach speed, but you can get faster. BA is not slow, that is for sure.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:21 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ozuna's speed is to Anderson's speed as Jenks's speed is to Cotts speed I'll have to remember that he said Anderson is the fastest guy. It assures me that Ozzie is watching a different game than all of us. Really? I bet it is closer than you think.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:19 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 1.) Ozzie said he thinks Anderson is the fastest guy on the team which frankly is a crock. 2.) Anderson had 20 total SBs over 3 years in the minors his minor league high was 10 for Winston Salem he also stole 17 for Arizona in his final year in college. Anderson is more known for being a smart baserunner and a good runner with an excellent first step, he's not particularly fast. A smart baserunner with an excellent first step can definitely be taught to steal 30-40 bases in the major leagues. More so than a purely speedy guy.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Who thinks Anderson is the fastest on the team? He might be the most graceful runner on the team, but Ozuna is far and away our fastest player. There are 14 guys in the majors with 30 or more steals right now, and everyone of them is a speedster (except maybe Pods, but that's another story). Every single guy on that list is significantly faster than Anderson. I don't have his career minor league stats, but since when have we projected him to be a 30-40 stolen base guy? You know this for a fact that Ozuna is the fastest or is this speculation by watching the games? He looks the fastest, but I don't know if this is fact. I never saw them race. I'm just saying. Ryan Freel is a speedster? Brian Roberts is? Johnny Damon is? Derek Jeter is? Bobby Abreu is? Omar Vizquel is? Really? Those are all speedsters? If so, then ok, but I don't consider any of the speedsters.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Because he keeps saying these types of things in the press, and he's going to lose his clubhouse. As a couple of informed posters have noted over the past few months, everything isn't as great as you might think in the clubhouse. I still won't forget the look of disgust that Thome and Dye had when they saw Ozzie chewing out Garland in that Rangers game. You have no idea about the clubhouse or what he has the chance to lose so why comment on something you have no idea about? I doubt very much that players are telling these "informed posters" anything that they can run and spread around. I have great difficulty beleiving that. I don't care how much confidence you have in someone, that just doesn't get out without reporters and others knowing about it if you tell "informed posters." I haven't heard it from anywhere else, so I am not buying it for a second. Plus, if this information is true, how could you trust someone that is spreading information that they were told in confidence and trust? I wouldn't trust someone like that, but that is for you to decide. When Thome passed by him chewing Garland out? It didn't look like disgust to me. Plus how do you know what they are giving that look of disgust to? Maybe it is at Garland for not being able to hit someone? Possibly. I am just saying you are assuming way too much about things you have no idea about. Neither do I, but I am not speculating one way or another about it.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well you obviously do considering you have like 60 posts in this thread. You counted my posts in this thread? Strange dude, strange. I like to argue and discuss topics. It doesn't have to be on this topic.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Brian Anderson will never, ever become a 30-40 stolen base guy. Quite simply, he's not that fast. I'd be pleased with 15 homers and 15 steals for him. I think he has the potential to hit for more homers than that, but I'm not exactly writing in Anderson as a future 2-3-4-5 hitter for the Sox. Put him in the 7th spot, and we'll be just fine. Only really fast guys have stolen 30-40 bases a year? Really? I think you are a liar. Plus some think BA is the fastest on the team. I think he has more potential than you give him credit for. BA is pretty damn fast by the way.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:02 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nope, I don't care what the Sox accomplish on the field, you'll never hear me say that I love Ozzie. I congratulated him for being the manager of the AL Central winner, and then winning the World Series. Yes, I had some complaints about Ozzie when I thought he made brutal managerial moves (bringing in Hermanson to face Lane was awful, as was bringing in Marte vs the Red Sox when the umpire had no strike zone). The one thing I'll give Ozzie a lot of credit for is that he shut up during the postseason. He was pretty good during the offseason until a few weeks before Spring Training. Then, the ARod stuff came out in the paper, and he's been an idiot pretty consistently with what he says since then. People seem to forget that during our bad stretch last year when the Indians almost caught us, Ozzie was making some absolutely terrible decisions. He was still leaving in our starters too long (Mr. Garcia), and we blew quite a few games during that stretch due to lack of urgency in his decisions. I absolutely hate the way that Ozzie seems to criticize his young players more than his veterans. Who's to say that guys like Pods and Garcia don't need the same kick in the ass that McCarthy or Anderson do? My whole argument about this Anderson stuff is that I didn't see the need for these comments about Anderson right now. The Sox aren't sucking because of Brian Anderson only. He has ripped Pods and his defense. He has started to platoon Pods. What more do you want him to do? Hasn't he ripped Garcia's fastball? I believe he has. Who cares who he rips? I really don't understand it. They players aren't crying or upset about it. Why the hell are you? Grow some thicker skin and move on. For the love of God man. Whe freaking cares. WHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The kid is near the end of his first full year in the majors, and Ozzie is busy talking about how he either has to become a power hitter or a speed player. How about he just becomes a stand-out defensive player and tries to hit .270 each year with 15 or so homers? It doesn't matter. The more I hear Ozzie talk about getting more speed, the more I feel like Pierre will be our CF next year. I read to "decide to become a power hitter or a baserunner." What is your definition of a power hitter? To me that is Jim Thome, David Ortiz, or any other 40 homer guy. What is your definition of a baserunner or stolen base guy? 30-40 stolen bases? That is what I think. I am getting from this that Ozzie wants him to becaome a 10-15 homer guy with 30-40 SBs. He is not telling him to stop hitting for power. The power will be there just because he has natural power. Ozzie has always talked about speed. Speed does help a lot. Speed and defense is championship baseball. Speed gives you a lot more options and a lot of different ways to score.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, saying Pods is "pressing too much" is sure ripping him. I'm not one of the Brian Anderson lovers on this board, but I think Ozzie has treated him like crap on and off the field now. He has said more than that about Pods. He has said that he needs to improve defensively, that he doesn't understand how someone with that much speed can be that bad defensively. He has now platooned the man with a couple of career long backups. What is worse than that? How has Oz treated BA like crap on and off the field? Because he is treating him with rookie kid gloves and not playing him every day? Picking and choosing the spots to play him? Sounds like most rookies to me. He has treated BA like crap off the field by what he has said in this article? WOW! Talk about thin skin. Get over it. Have you ever played ball? A lot more than this is said and done by a coach before it is considered being treated bad or ripped into.

QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 06:42 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ozzie Guillen on Brian Anderson: "I told him he's got to go to winter ball and [decide to] be a power hitter or a baserunner. Either you go deep or steal bases." STALLONED Being a power hitter is much different than telling someone not to hit for power. He never said to stop hitting for power. A power hitter, in my eyes, is someone like Thome, Bonds, Pujols, Ortiz... He doesn't want BA to be all power and nothing else. He wants him to be more about speed and hit about 10-15 homers. That is what I am getting from it. I think he wants Brian Roberts type numbers from him, 10-15 homers and 30-40 stolen bases, and I don't see why BA can't do that. He has a ton of talent and a ton of potential. You sure are stalloned. You are freaking high. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's the fact Ozzie goes out and says this s*** about someone who has played at least average ball since the break, while guys like Pods had rarely missed a start. He has ripped Pods too. Don't you think he is being more careful with BA because he is a rookie? That is the way I see it. He has called Pods out as well and has recently stated he will be platooning. I know a lot of you guys have a man crush hard on for BA, but don't be over protective of the guy. I don't see him crying about this s***.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 05:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Took me a minute to find it, but this was Ozzie about a week ago. Isn't he correct? Is he doing either one? Don't most CFers do one or the other? Besides Carlos Beltran I can't think of another who does both well. Wouldn't it be easier to work on speed? Isn't speed and defense a key ingredient to championship baseball? Look around the league and you tell me what is harder to come by and what is more valuable at the moment, a speedy leadoff hitter type or a power hitter? Our team is crying for a speedy leadoff hitter type. That's calling him out? OK. Either our fans are thin skinned or BA is. I don't think it is BA and I don't think he is crying about it, so I think it is our fans. Someone needs to get over it. Hell if this is calling someone out then times have really changed.
