NFL 2021 offseason thread
Pace has shown he is pretty good on the defensive side of the ball - so I'm okay wtih defense taking a slight step back in the short-term to address the offensive side of the ball. Its why I could live without addressing DB and going a bit more aggressive on the line/wideout and hope you can sign a cap casualty at DB later in the off-season (just a savy vet) and maybe some flyer picks. It isn't great - but at this point - when you take a big swing at QB - I feel like we should make sure we put the right pieces around him to help with his development/position him to succeed.

No one thought Glennon, Foles or Dalton are LT solutions. Maybe - there was a - 1 in 100 scenario where Glennon takes a bit step forward, since he was young and not terrible in limited playing time. Those were all stop-gap measures. None of these moves were permanent LT fits. They were risk mitigation moves in general. Not saying they were good moves - the Foles one - is still the one that irks me the most. I don't blame Dalton for the Fuller loss - because quite frankly - they could have dumped Graham and kept Fuller - so it feels more like the Bears just decided that based upon the dialogue they were ready to go seperate ways. Not a move I would make - but if you know you are adding a young QB (or hoping to) - maybe it isn't crazy cause you know that by time your young QB is ready - you'll need a younger DB anyway. I don't know - probably grasping for straws here and I still say I would have kept Fuller and dumped Graham. But with a young QB - long term, maybe a vet like Graham is still worth his weight in gold from that standpoint - and in the development of Kmet.

COVID-19/Coronavirus thread
Is the 86 the 7 day average or a 7 day daily average? Just curious. Is it really just over 10 per day a country of 9M people? Either way - still great to see such a steep drop down as they keep vaccinating. And to think those stats are with 55% of the country fully vaccinated. US up to 43% of population having received one shot and 30% being fully vaccinated. On that note - got my 2nd shot earlier today. So far so good...hopefully I get a good nights sleep and am saying the same thing tomorrow

I'm totally down with Marshall - I think if it were me - I'd move down and see if I can get an extra 4th plus a decent 3rd - and than stack oline/wideout (with the depth we should be able to get 1 good one each) plus target DB. I might even add a 2nd olineman/wideout.

So I was coaching my kids little league when my phone was blowing up - the first person I thought of was you - figured somewhere in Chicago you were cheering as loud as I was!!! This is so awesome. Now lets see Nagy turn into that offensive genius!

Deshaun Watson. Even Mahome's - not a guy that reads the D a ton. Athleticism matters and a ton. And is it a real weakness or with more time does he deliver. People said the same thing about Watson - but you know what - he arrived and he's used his athleticism and skill and just MAKES plays. Either way - YOU WILL NEVER WIN NOT SWINGING AT QBs. If it works - Bears arrow skyrockets - if it doesn't - they are drafting another QB in 2023. Whatever - that is the way things work. Worse thing they could have done is passed - been in a spot next year where you are in a thin QB draft - so you pass again or trade up (cause a QB will go high no matter what next year) and you do it for a prospect way worse than Fields....or you pass because you don't like the crop and you are picking a QB in '23 again (so the way I see it - this was a total no brainer).

So you know - Fields weakness is maybe he isn't the best reader of the D. But he was HIGHLY accurate and obviously he is HIGHLY athletic and he's won at the highest level and played a ton.

I am hoping Fields is literally the non-off field issue version of Deshaun Watson. People over thunk it and he turned into a stud. So fired up....love it. Curious to see what they do in 2nd - if they try and get an extra pick or two or if they stay where they are at. Need to still address CB plus Oline & wideout. Man - Just love this.

Rodgers to the Bears...make it happen!!! I wonder if Schefter's report of Rodgers absolute disgust with Packers aligns with some of the other rumblings out there that Niners offered the farm for Rodgers in the past 24 hours.

I agree with you - to me we either draft one in the 1st or we accumulate some assets and just pick one of the guys later in the draft - some will fall. Don't use a 2nd on a QB. Probability of a non 1st round QB's leading you to the promise land is not good, especially since the draft payroll structure was adjusted where picks get slotted in (much different when a 1st round QB was getting 3 times more money than the respective LB and thus it was more than just blowing it on the pick - you had to live with the fact that you paid Akili Smith like an in their prime Aaron Rodgers. Yes - there is Russel Wilson - but that is it. That said - in the first round - the best QB's haven't always been the top guy in recent years - going back to science isn't so hot on this. I really just think it is throwing a dart - but they just need to do it.

GAME THREADS WARNING
Lets make things real simple - there is a big difference between so and so is terrible at their job and should be canned vs. what this is getting at. It really isn't as hard as people make this out to be. We have always been a reasonable and fair forum and in the vast majority of the time - the individual posters do an amazing job policing themselves. No - none of us are perfect, but in general - we have always said - give us your take - but do it in a way respectful to others and that is respectful. Hot take - go ahead - the game threads are full of them. So and so is trash after they strike out (despite hitting .330 or something) is going to happen. I don't personally get it - baseball is a game of failure and a long season - but that no one is getting banned for that comment. Said poster recognized they shouldn't have said what they said - but the key here is - there recently have been some comments that have edged on the wrong side - the ask is simple and fair reminder - to keep things cordial and be respectful.

That is the point - why not take one now - even if it means they give up a pick next year. They get it right - amazing, not having a 1st round pick next year will be more than offset by having a young rookie scale QB compounded by the fact that the CAP will grow again (Bears cap problems vanish next year anyway - in fact they will literally flip their cap position - if they hit on QB). If they miss - next year is a rebuilding year anyway - it sucks not having that pick - but end of the day - the QB class doesn't look great and we'll have a new GM anyway - who at that point is going to do a complete roster turnover anyway - so whatever. I tell you one thing - punting another year and than next year it will be - this class isn't so good - we should wait again - welp, that will continue and the Bears will have blown multiple opportunities to take a chance (cause that is what draft a QB is - a total game of chance). And you know what - there are many things about Nagy I don't like - but maybe he made Mitch as good as Mitch was ever going to be. It isn't like he failed with Mahomes - not saying he had anything to do with Mahomes either, but I know Nagy was a big believer in Mahomes and he obviously wasn't in the warroom when they drafted Mitch (but I genuinely think he liked Mitch).

Supposedly he was one of the first to break the Brady to Bucs news - so maybe he is connected. This would leave the Bears & Washington Football team as the 2 most logical destinations (presuming Falcons, Lions, Eagles and no other random surprises - which is always possible).

Different rumor floating that Pats are working on a new deal with Jimmy G - potentially opening up / leading to a draft day deal with the Niners. Please...pretty please . Could the Pats trade up be smokescreen to maximize what they get from Niners - obviously inverse is also true - but I'd imagine teams know you got Bears at a minimum in play to aggressively move up - so presume more reasons for Pats to use trade-up talks to increase leverage with Niners (kind of a now or never to get anything for Jimmy G). From someone on twitter named "Dale Arnold". No clue if reputable or not.

I can't tell what is what at this point. I can't see how Washington passes on a QB....but really the key is the Broncos / Pats need to address QB via trade (Bridgewater / Jimmy G). If that is the direction those franchise go - than I legitimately see shot for the Bears...but do Lions/Eagles bite on a QB or someone else we aren't thinking...i don't know. Would be truly amazing to see Falson, Pats, Broncos all stand down on QB. No other teams jump up - which basically leaves Bears / Skins. I'll be honest - if I am Pace - I still think I'd move up and go secure the go at some point (vs. hoping they fall to 20).

What happened to Garrett Crochet's fastball?
Cole's transformation had more to do with increasing his spin rates and shifting from the Pirates pitch to contact/down in the zone philosphy vs. him shifting to max effort. Basically Cole stopped throwing his 2 seamer, which he threw a lot of down in the zone to get contact and reduce his pitch count. Now he throws his 4 seamer up - harder to hit - more swing and miss. So maybe part of your point is - more workload because you are throwing more pitches - but it wasn't like Houston asked him to pitch max velocity at all time.

I actualyl think all of those guys (Pat, Allen, Jackson, & Watson) have one thing in common - they are all tremendous athletes who can makes plays when things break down. I would tell you all of Watson's faults in college - still exist. He is not an overly decisive reader of defenses - but he overcomes it with his big play ability, his pure grit and leadership capabilities, and his ability to use his feet and other weapons to turn things. Josh Allen - he is probably an outlier - in the sense that his accuracy, which was his major flaw took noticeable steps forward. But he also makes a ton of big plays with his legs and uses those legs to create time and allow for the quick score. He is not the guy who is going to lead a ton of 15 play TD drives, but that is okay - cause he stretches the field and creates plays....just like he did in college and as he has done in the pro's. The accuracy was huge. Jackson - he is what he was in college - a spectacular athlete who creates plays and does enough with his arm to keep defenses honest. Nothing about him has flipped in the pro's or taken crazy steps forward. He didn't become some amazing pocket passer or anything like that. Mahomes - Hard for me to say - but he is still a gunslinger and it wasn't maybe until this past season where he become more of a reader of the defense. But he made plays in college and leveraged that crazy arm talent to his advantage and he's doing it at the NFL at prolific clips - but in general - its by extending plays and just throwing darts all over the field. Its why when I think of Fields - I kind of get a Watson type of comparison. People knock him for at times not being elite at reading defenses but ignore the fact that he's an accurate, extremely athletic, accomplishment leader who flat out makes great plays and delivered many times at the highest stage. Yes - he also lost at the highest stage - but you win some / you lose some. For those reasons - Fields feels like that guy. Wilson is Mahomes (not saying they will be the same player - but that construct - except Wilson did it against smaller school competition). Lance is hard to say - kind of like Josh Allen - I don't know if he's as easy of a guy to pinpoint or not. In Mitch's case - I think the Bears asked him to be what he wasn't and than injuries compounded that and it backfired and he kind of ended up being a better pocket passer than he was in college...but not good enough to be an above average NFL QB and he became too reserved to use his legs to his advantage...so that strength from college shrunk. End of the day - they ended up with a worse version of the college player. Part of it too was mental - imo. Too many things in his head, etc. But one constant - NFL can't get this stuff consistently right - so my view is - take your shot - more recently it hasn't been the top guy who ended up being the stud...but one of the not top guys - but still first rounders - who succeeded (Mahomes / Watson / Allen / Jackson). Note: I'm not big on Mayfield - although I shouldn't underrate Murray who I think is a very good NFL QB...although still not sure if his body will hold up to the regular beatings or not.
