  1. QUOTE (CyAcosta41 @ Dec 21, 2011 -> 07:05 PM) I think the next move would be to move FLOYD and Quentin. With another quality starter now off the market, solid and durable Gavin, with his two years of affordable control, has real value to a pitching starved contender (or teams like the O's or Nats). Kenny just help make his own leverage -- now be patient dude, and ... use the leverage when you have it. Quentin has some value -- injury issues or not, his right-handed power numbers are not easy to find, he's not that expensive, and a team trading for him is only committing for one year. I like the idea of packaging him with Floyd for a decent package, but he can be traded in a reasonable trade. I'd actually keep Matt for the time being. Baseball is a funny game. Play the game and see what happens. While maybe not likely, it's certainly possible that turnaround years from some of the usual suspects combined with new on-field leadership can inject some sorely needed vitality into this group. It's happened other places. If we're contending, then we benefit from having Matt Thornton's stuff and experience; if we're not, then some contender will absolutely take Thornton for the stretch-run, even if it's purely a salary dump (and it will likely be just that). There are all sorts of things that led to Danks being signed, but kudos to Kenny for having the cajones to do the right thing and change up on his likely plan given our circumstances right this moment. I don't view it as waffling or being contradictory, I view it as having the guts to alter course as the target moves. And truck Keith Law anyway. What a joker. His anti-Sox bias has been obvious for years. I can't understand how anyone could care what he thinks about the Sox, a Sox prospect, or a Sox move. All things considered, I feel better about the Sox today than I did yesterday. Right now I'm confused at what the Sox plan is but my guess is you don't resign Danks to move Floyd. You need starting pitchers and with Peavy coming off the books a year from now you can still build a rotation around Danks/Floyd. Is it a great rotation, no, but could be solid, depending on what happens with Molina, Sale, etc. I imagine the Sox will move Quentin for the right price and if they got the right offer for Floyd would make a trade as well (key being the right offer). In general, I'm really confused right now. If you get Cepedes and go with this than I wonder what the Sox plan really is? They would seem to be getting younger but they are still in a bind with Peavy/Rios/Dunn. Those three truly put the Sox in a real bad spot. If I were to guess, the Sox are going to look at moving Alexei, Thornton, and Quentin. I'm probably talking out of my butt, but all make decent returns, are close to or on the wrong side of 30, and could command pretty good value in return.
  2. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Dec 21, 2011 -> 10:18 AM) I heard last night on MLB Radio. I believe it was CLiff Floyd reporting that the White Sox will go all out and try to sign Cespedes. The guy sounds like one of those special talents. The type of guy you could build your franchise around. That said, huge risk here.
  3. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Dec 21, 2011 -> 12:14 PM) With this rumor as well as the Cespedes one, I guess KW has changed his mind about rebuilding. Or it really is a more retooling process more than anything else. Sox looking to go younger and Danks would make sense (especially if you had other guys).
  4. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 19, 2011 -> 02:12 PM) Dead-on. The Bears are actually very similar to the White Sox, as they've failed spectacularly at adapting to the obvious changes in the modern NFL. Running games are almost moot these days. They're still very important. But it's not 1992 anymore. The game is more than ever geared towards the pass. Teams are winning with explosive aerial attacks as their strength, with the running game as more of a supplement. The run no longer sets up the pass. It's the other way around now. The Bears keep going into every season with thrift-shop style offenses in hopes that they run into some luck and that the defense/ST will do what they've done during most of Lovie's tenure. You have to play to the elements though and the Steelers would argue that you don't need a strong aerial attack. Defense and being able to run the football is still very important to winning the superbowl. The Packers had an excellent defense last season to compliment there offense and they didn't take off until they started running the football effictively late last year (obviously they've done well this season without the rush, but in a cold weather, tough game, that rush attack is huge). Heck, the Pats haven't exactly lit the playoff world on fire the past few seasons.
  5. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 03:59 PM) You adding Buerhrle into this is comical. Molina is not 'scraps' and KW was looking at what was best for the Sox in the near future, we obviously aren't going to try to really compete this year. The Sox could have gotten more for Molina. I agree Molina is a solid prospect but when you are in a rebuilding mode, trading a cost controlled above average closer in a one for one deal for a potentail starting pitching prospect is not the best way to rebuild. Trading him for 2 good prospects and one average prospect is how you do it and I have no reason not to believe that the Sox couldn't have done that. The problem was Kenny fell in love with Molina and decided the 1 for 1 deal was worth it. It might be, but given our lack of depth, I want to see deals that get us multiple quality guys (plus, it isn't like Molina was a sure fire stud). None of this means I don't like Molina, it just means that I think from a value perspective the sox could have done better.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 03:18 PM) I would have taken that deal. Straight up? We'd be getting hosed. Alonso has upside but he has a lot of flaws (I'd flip Gordon for Alonso; Reds probably wouldn't since Gordon has struggled at the major league level, but neither are can't miss talents). Plus the Sox don't currently have any need at 1B. Would be an awful trade. If we got Volquez as well, I'd have considered it. Grandall and Volquez and I'd have been all over it. Although I assume EV is a free agent soon.
  7. Latos is a stud but I also commend the Padres for this move. I'd have loved picking up a guy like Volquez too and putting him with Coop. Those are the types of trades that can help a rebuilding process (where you get numerous chips with potential and if you can be lucky enough to hit on multiple of them, you find yourself in a great position). One for one deals like the Santos one just don't make much sense, given the complete lack of depth the Sox have. I hope I'm wrong but Kenny is not the right guy to right this ship. Oh and if we traded Danks for Alonso I'd have been pissed. We wouldn't have gotten all of this for Danks though, Latos is a better talent and cost controlled.
  8. Anyone have a good online feed for the Bears game? I'm even willing to pay. Stuck too far away from any sports bars at a work thing and need to find a way to get the game. Thanks
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 12:00 PM) Couldnt do it at ND, goes to Florida, they have one of the worst offensive seasons they've had in years. When exactly is his offense going to work on a collegiate level? I never said it did. I think he's an idiot for going back to college. He's an excellent offensive coordinator in the NFL and will not be more than that. Maybe he could have succeeded as an NFL head coach but coaching at the collegiate level is not his strong suit because he isn't able to spend the time it takes to get players coached up to be in a position to succeed in his offense/system. Also, lets not forget that when recruits sign with major colleges they automatically move up in rivals/scout ratings anyway. It isn't like Brian Kelly, whose a pretty damn bright mind himself, was able to take Notre Dame with the talent he inherited and immediately kick butt. Now if someone wants to say that is because Kelly is a lousy coach I guess that is a whole nother debate.
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 05:38 AM) Yeah, recruiting is Weis' strongsuit, he always could bring in the top players. Couldnt coach worth s*** He could coach, his offense is just rather compelx and he couldn't coach it in the time-frame he has with collegiate athletes (e.g., limited practice time).
  11. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 05:09 PM) I would be all over tickets if the Sox signed Pujols, you don't get to see a talent like that play right in front of you too much. I enjoyed watching Vladdy for years too. Plus I get to watch Haren, Weaver, etc. Thats some damn good pitching. Thank god my 2nd favorite team will be meaningful for a few years while the Sox are irrelevant (although I'm excited to watch the Sox prospects, assuming we get some). Last year was the least I watched White Sox baseball in forever (during the summer that is). Team was so freaking unlikeable and Ozzie so easy to hate.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 03:57 PM) It's annoying to me that somewhere out there there are legit people who are both Angels and Lakers fans. I'm an Angel fan; Hate the Lakers though. I am excited to get to watch Pujols a lot. After getting rid of my season seats a few years ago, I'm thinking of getting in on a 20 game plan with a buddy. I'd love to watch a guy like Pujols.
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 03:46 PM) How the hell will they get Dwight? They have nothing to trade except Bynum. The only real chance they have at Howard is signing him next off-season. They will never be able to do that (unless it is in a sign-and-trade). Lakers are way over the cap. They could trade Bynum, an ending contract, plus cash for Howard and Turk. I would never do that deal if I were the Magic (I'd rather get Lopez, Eric Gordon, or Joakim Noah), but I'm not the Magic.
  14. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 03:30 PM) @christomasson: One agent I spoke to really does believe that a package involving Andrew Bynum for Dwight Howard is coming. No way the Lakers go with just Bynum and no PF. Something else is going to happen. They will take Turk and use him as a 4.
  15. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 03:18 PM) Paul adds another 3 years of elite play to Kobe's career. Unlike Wade/LeBron, Kobe's actually good at moving without the ball and is a much better shooter than both. Kobe is an excellent shooter. I'd say he's a much better long range shooter than Michael ever was.
  16. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) Paul to the Lakers? Well there's your west champ. Howard is going to LA. We all know it. Hooray for the impact the new CBA has had on competitive balance. If the Lakers don't get Dwight, I don't think this deal makes them better. Paul and Odom are good players, Gasol being an above average player. Hell, through the first quarter of last years season you could make an argument that Gasol was playing an MVP level. This is also retarded for New Orleans. They don't get anything very special in the deal (Scola is solid and Martin is meh) but unless there is a bunch of financial rammifications that I"m not aware of (and I'm sure I am) on Paper the trade is awful for New Orleans. Lakers have zero front court once Bynum has his annual injury and I don't know how much better Paul makes a guy like Kobe who can create his own shot all day anyway. I'm curious to see what the Lakers are going to do at the 4 and I'm also curious to know who there backup bigs will be cause right now they have absolute garbage there after this trade. If you get Howard than I understand. You've built up a new young core in Howard/Paul and have Kobe for another couple years and will just build via mid-level exceptions, etc.
  17. If they can get Dwight, its a great move. Otherwise I don't know how much better this truly makes the Lakers. Clearly they needed an upgrade at point but Gasol (outside of his soft playoff performance) is a damn good big.
  18. Two huge moves for the Angels. They significantly improve their offense and improve an already strong rotation. Wilson is getting paid some serious cheese though as is Pujols. Short term these moves should significantly help the Angels and it pretty much is there last chance to take fans from the Dodgers as the Dodgers should become much more viable once the ownership situation is settled.
  19. Mark...YOu'll be missed but I'll always cheer for you (except against the Sox).
  20. I assume it has to do with complimenting Buehrle. I'm guessing no other news.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) Thanks Mr Obvious! How is that obvious? Floyd has a longer contract so there is value there.
