Getz is Hahn's guy, so my first thought that is that moving him to manager would at least put to rest the idea that Hahn has no power. But the next move would likely be to put W Jr. in charge of the farm, which will wash that down the drain, and will resurrect the bloggers' theme that the "hand of KW controls all." And DA could certainly be right that Hahn, not one to hire "premium talent" for FO positions, might do this because he sees Getz as a threat.

Yes, you (and others) are certainly right about that. I don’t know what I was looking at. He belongs in that “premium talent” category.

Looking at the Phillies further reveals how stupid Hahn is with his budget. The Phillies use minimum salary players at C, SS, CF, 3B, none of whom produced particularly well. They didn't spend much on the pen. But they spent their money on 2 good hitters (Schwarber and Castellanos), on "premium talent" in Wheeler and esp. Bryce Harper. The Sox signed no "premium talent", and poured money into the bullpen, 2B, UI and C. Most of those players figured to be nothing but hole-fillers anyway; the only compelling signees were Lynn, Grandal and Hendriks. Sox had a stronger base to start than the Phillies, and should be able to do what they did while spending less.

It wouldn't surprise me if they make moves for salary reduction. Something like Hendriks or Lynn for a C prospect; not pick up Giolito's option. That sort of thing. I don't think they'll move the overpaid and hopeless, as that will require attaching an A prospect to the stiff, and receiving a C in return. RH gets riled up and mad from reading twitter, so I doubt he's interested in those comments live and in person.

In his press conference, he said he had a long meeting with JR and KW discussing the parameters/characteristics they wanted in the new manager. The "I was overruled" excuse has expired, just like his "who could have known?", "the decline was unprecedented" et al have long expired.

If they want an ex Sox player, they should hire they guy who is actually working in the biz and working toward being a manager right now: Willie Harris.

And the absolute laziness of the org. is underappreciated.

I would just suggest that if the Sox pick up the option with the intent to trade him that they not announce to the world this time that they want to trade him. I realize that Giolito, in contrast to KImbrel, is actually worth the option; but announcing the intent to trade immediately reduces the trade value. Picking up Kimbrel's option was bad enough, but the public pronouncement, plus signing relievers before trading him, made the situation far worse.

That would be Hahn managing Jerry's budget: sell low on 2 young players to bring back a slightly above average older veteran. I also wonder where the "elsewhere" is that "good pitching" resides.

Not I. I'll take the Guardians front office with the Sox budget. I'd love to have Preller's skills in identifying, evaluating and developing young talent; but as for his trading...dare I suggest that it is kind of Hahnish.

Aside from his absurdities (such as if walks were important for a leadoff hitter, I'd have Jim Thome lead off) Ozzie hasn't been on a major bench in a decade. That's not a serious effort to be a manager, that's a diva.

I'll take door #2: face the reality that this team isn't winning squat until they can really reshape it, which will involve both the development of a few players like Montgomery and getting rid of some contracts. So lay back in 2023, let most of the contracts of the riff-raff expire, and stay flexible and keep their eyes open to take advantage of opportunities as they arise, which they will (and which the FO likely won't take advantage of).

Did Renteria have Sox connections? But yea, nothing wrong with someone with past connections it if it's not a criteria for seemingly every important baseball-related job.

The Sox' 1,4, and 7 prospects, not to mention younger roster players Mendick and Gonzalez, are all MI. Putting any sort of investment in a 2B (via FA or trade) seems, well, extremely Hahnish. To me the downside of trading Hendriks is that he's not financial bargain, so it's just going to be a salary dump; Hahn doesn't need any more $$ for more of his bullshit signees (Sox would have had a better team last season had Hahn had less money to spend). So unless they are going to invest in a real FA OF or SP, THIS season, it's better to hold him to July when they might get something for him.

There's not much they can affirmatively do this offseason to improve (as long as RH is in charge), so I hope they just hold. Hahn should pay-off Pollock, pick up Gio's option, sign a LF with emphasis on D, sign a serviceable starter, and then take a nap the entire winter (like he did last December, but for the entire winter). Let Abreu go, and firmly plant Vaughn at 1B. Eloy at DH. Give Sheets a year as bench bat, playing a day or 2 in the field per week; hope Sosa or Gonzales proves to be a major league player; see what Colas can do. Figure out what to do with Crochet. Hope Montgomery develops to be ready for '24. Then, wake-up Hahn and July and see if he can move some players like a revived Gio, Hendriks, Lynn, and, if we get lucky, other relievers. Could also get lucky and be competitive.

Different era; and Scully did a lot of network work. Benetti is a good baseball announcer; but I think he's developing into a great football announcer. Rooney was the best PBP guy the Sox have had in the many (many) years I've followed; and they didn't muster up much of an effort to keep him.

I'm good with all the announcers, including Beckham. What would be annoying is someone with a Tom Hamilton voice quacking for 9 innings.
