  1. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 03:55 AM) I dunno about "great". Like a 4.6 era, I think. Ton of strikeouts, young, first year at AA, so, not bad. But "great"? True, but as you said, young. Very young for his league. Eh, call me crazy, I'm not as pissed. I thought anyone posting Pelfrey plus packages for Garcia was absolutely nuts. These are two pretty good arms. If even one ends up giving us a league average year or more as a starter, it'll be tough for this not to be a win for the Sox. And who knows... we save $10 million here, and it's not like the Sox need to cut back budget. Something else could be in the works. Maybe the Sox like Zito and want to make a play for him?
  2. I'm not terribly dissappointed with this deal. If either of these guys ever figure it out, they're going to be real good. Gotta harness some control, we're getting twelve years of these two + $10 million for one year of Freddy. It's a letdown from the Pelfrey/Milledge rumors, but I don't find it that terrible...
  3. QUOTE(WCSox @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:31 PM) The Sox already tried the experiment with the malcontent, clubhouse-cancer, power-hitting LF a decade ago. It didn't work out then, so I don't see why it'd work now. Albert Belle? The first year it didn't work out too great, but the second year, Belle put up one of the greatest single season performances in White Sox history. It's not his fault that the Sox best starting pitcher had a 4.80 ERA... You wanna talk about an awful staff? Look at some of those numbers, and I swear, no one will ever complain about Javy Vazquez ever again.
  4. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 08:39 PM) However, If you guys want I can try to find another option of board software that I may know of or something along those lines. Meh. Personally speaking, I don't think it's worth it. I liked the little community we had, but I don't think it's worth it to go through with another software. I'm okay with lurking at Stuy's board and talking in this thread.
  5. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 06:59 PM) TalkBhawks.com will be closing its doors. That's understandable. The idea was fine, but the upkeep (with now two viruses/hackers) was probably too much considering the small community. I'm cool with posting my Hawk thoughts in this thread.
  6. QUOTE(Frank the Tank 35 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 07:59 PM) Forgiveness, it seems, is the better part of valor. I'm not familiar with the Vasquez situation, but I suppose life's about second chances. IIRC, Olivo was caught using at some point in our system, too? Anyway, I'm pretty sure Barry's used up his 9 strikes. You mean Morse? This is how rumors get started. People throw around names, and other people see those names, and those said people start talking.
  7. QUOTE(Frank the Tank 35 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 07:52 PM) I'd like to think the Sox are above that sort of thinking. IIRC, the Carlos Vasquez guy the Sox acquired in the Cotts deal was suspended for testing positive. Kenny Williams must be associated with the devil for acquiring a known 'roid user.
  8. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 07:22 PM) I'd rather let the Cubs have the headlines than us have one that says we signed Bonds. The deal Bonds' gets will be far-and-away the BEST signed by any of the big name OFers this winter (Drew, Lee, Soriano, Pierre, Matthews). One year for a guaranteed .420 OBP guy? You could leadoff with Brian Anderson and Juan Uribe and still score 900+ runs...
  9. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 07:10 AM) I'm hoping Houston enters this whole mix as they have a lot of talent that I like. Jason Hirsh Hirsh and Burke for Freddy G + $$$ and/or a prospect or two (Phillips, Tracey). That'd work for me. Burke could play mainly LF in 2006 2007, and switch to 2B in 2007 2008. Hirsh, despite very mediocre peripherals, had one heckuva year in the PCL last year. 2.10 ERA, under seven hits per nine. Anyone have a scouting report? He doesn't look to be at the level of a Pelfrey, but I'd say he's probably a step above Broadway. I know this looks fairly lopsided in our favor, getting six years of Hirsh and another three-four years of Burke, but as Flash said, I'm not looking for straight up equal value -- I want to make a killing!
  10. Iguchi for leadoff? But... but... but... he's a #6 hitter!!!! Noo!!!! They can't think about doing that, nooooo00000!!!! -------------------------------------------- The Mets still make a lot of sense, as everyone knows, especially if they don't nab Zito. Apparently the Giants are making a push for Zito; I hope they grab him, as nothing from San Fran and the Sox aren't a fit to make a trade. But back to the Mets. If it's Garcia who's going, I want Milledge + Heilman. If it's either Vazquez or Buehrle, Humber or Pelfrey have to be included.
  11. Well, after watching Marquette lethargically take down Delaware State tonight, I'm not too confident going into the Wiscy game on Saturday. The energy that was there during the Duke and Texas Tech games just hasn't been there the past two games. Maybe I'm being too hard on them... after all, this is my first season actually following a college basketball team from start all the way through. This might sound silly, but is it 'normal' for higher ranked teams to sleepwalk through their non-conference schedule (sans, of course, the big games like Duke, Wiscy, T-Tech). Maybe they're just playing down to their competition. All I know is that the BC is going to be rockin' on Saturday, and I'll be quite dissappointed if MU isn't amped. A victory is possible, but they're going to have to play damn well defensively, which hasn't necessarily been the case the past couple games.
  12. Dear Kenny -- Please get the following things done at the winter meetings. 1.) Grab a competent backup catcher. 2.) Bring in a nice package of prospects/players for one of Garcia/Vazquez. 3.) Please trade Mr. Scott Podsednik and put anyone else -- and I mean anyone else; Gload, Mackozuna platoon, or Ryan Sweeney would work fine -- out there. Heck, if you even got two done, I'd be happy. Your distant pal, -Keith
  13. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 06:33 PM) Actually, now that some of the championship hangover has worn off, I think most rational Sox fans aren't crazy about bringing Rowand back. Of course, people were having convulsions when we traded him, but then again, some were upset when we let Geoff Blum go. There were plenty of Sox fans who would have preferred that the Sox entered 2006 with the entire 2005 team intact. I still think this Rowand talk is more fluff than substance. It's more of the same; our irrational White Sox beat reporters making up rumors. Has there been ONE -- even one? -- quote from Kenny Williams saying that he has any interest at all at possibly bringing him back? It's not fair... how come KC gets to have a good writer following the team and we don't?
  14. Good work, Sox front office. The free agent market may be inflated, but damn, there's lots of great values (if you work hard enough) in these international leagues. Would love to see a LOT more of this, but it's a nice start. //applause
  15. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 07:07 AM) So just a random question but for you students: any home games over break that piss you off that they're over break? We play Wichita State and Missouri State over break at home and I'm really ticked about that. And I also know that Illinois has OSU over break. So anyone else with big home games over break? We play 'Cuse and West Virginia early in the New Year, and to my knowledge, we're off at least until January 15th, if not the week after that. Other than that, it's a buch of mid majors (UMBC, Oakland, Morgan State, and Savannah State) and some away BE games (@ Providence and UConn). I'll willingly make the drive up for the 'Cuse and WV games, though -- and maybe I'll try and make it up for one of the mid-major games, although that's doubtful.
  16. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 10:40 PM) Bears win their division for the second year in a row. I, for one, think Ron Turner called a terrible game today, and it appeared the WR's were running lazy routes, not to mention the drops. I was sitting in a bar type place and had some Detroit fans sitting right next to me. Ugh... when my teams suck, I hope I'm never that much of a moron. When Ricky Manning had the INT, he and his girl friend were complaining about the Bears fans standing up. And then when the game was for sure in the bag, all I heard was "one and done" coming from him. The funniest thing I've heard, though, was said just as the game was ending: "Bears fans sure have a lot of class." This, again, coming from a Detroit fan. All I could do was laugh.
  17. QUOTE(beck72 @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 11:02 AM) Riske is a type A free agent. No team would have given up two picks for Riske. The sox offer him arb. and every team in the majors would avoid him like the plague, which would leave him no choice but to accept the sox offer of arb. Again, not true. If the team is drafting from 16th-30th in the big leagues, they don't give up their first round pick. They give up a second or third round pick, and along with that, the Sox get a sandwich pick after the first round. And if you're trying to tell me that a team wouldn't give up a 2nd or 3rd rounder just to sign Riske, you're mistaken. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 08:55 AM) Chad Bradford had a 2.90 ERA and a 2.22 ERA after the ASB. In comparison, Riske had a 3.83 ERA for the White Sox, so I'd personally be suprised if Riske got a similar contract to Bradford. Yes. Based on a half-season of stats, Riske won't get the same money Bradford got. Great logic. I'm not saying Riske will get more or less money, but based on what, 30 IP? GMAFB.
  18. Ugh... The dream is over. Marquette played without a whole lot of energy tonight. I would characterize just one player on MU having a good game, and that was the backup PG, so that's obviously not a great sign. Shooting was horrendous. 36% from the field, 20% from beyond the ark (4-of-20, :puke), and they only got to the line 14 times (made eight -- under 60%). James only played 27 minutes and wasn't in foul trouble. It was wierd; during the second half, Crean, for whatever reason, played him sparingly (or so it seemed). There's no way in hell this team should've kept up with Marquette. MU was clearly more athletic, yet decided it was okay to settle for contested threes and 15 footers, rather than taking it all the way to the hoop. Crean said it perfectly -- we've dodged some bullets this year, against Idaho State and at Valpo. We didn't dodge that bullet tonight. Maybe this is a good wake-up call. This team is good. But talent alone isn't going to get them anywhere. They can survive nights when they shoot 30% from the field, but when they bring that to the defensive end, they're in BIG trouble. It's funny... box score says NDState turned the ball over 25 times. That's the 'quietest' 25 turnover night I've ever seen.
  19. If USC loses, does the s*** hit the perverbial fan? Florida takin' care of business against Arkansas...
  20. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2006 -> 11:53 PM) If David Riske was not a type A or type B Free Agent, then offering him Arbitration would have not meant that the White Sox would receive draft pick compensation if he did leave, if I understand the changes correctly. Riske was Type A. That's why Santo titled the post, "Who needs draft picks?" So there goes that theory.
  21. QUOTE(beck72 @ Dec 2, 2006 -> 08:22 PM) It makes perfect sense if the sox don't want Riske. KW and the sox coaches didn't want to get stuck with a guy they didn't want pitching for them, regardless of his ERA. They didn't want him or they would have tried to keep him [i agree, his salary would be very reasonable and in line with what other guys are getting in free agency]. IMO, Riske wasn't terrible. But KW and the sox [and we fans] should expect more than a guy who "isn't that bad". Who says we'd be stuck with him? You're telling me another team wouldn't give up a C prospect for one year of Riske at ~$3 million? It's a 'risk' (no pun intended) that the Sox should've been willing to take. It was a great opportunity to have a shot at adding a pretty good prospect to the farm system in next June's draft. Bad move, plain and simple.
  22. QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 10:19 PM) I will live vicariously through you. Go Warriors!!!!!! Well, Marquette won last night by 16. Marquette started the game off on an 11-0 run. NWState came back, though, and eventually took a 23-22 lead. But we took a four point lead at halftime, went on a 14-0 run to start the 2nd half, and never looked back. NWState was surprisingly athletic for a mid-major. I know a lot of you guys got to see them against Iowa last year, but I was quite surprised; they had some guys who could really leap out of the building. After the 11-0 run, they used a 1-2-2 3/4 court trap, not designed to get steals, but rather to prevent Marquette from running. I think that's going to be used a lot against Marquette, as, IMO, I don't think there's a whole lot of teams who can run (literally run -- I'm not saying MU is top three team in America by any means) with this team for a full 40 minutes. The 14-0 run to start the second half was nuts. NWState turned the ball over at least three times, and the Marquette guards were just getting layup after layup. I believe it's North Dakota State tonight, and next Saturday -- bring on those Badgers!
  23. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 10:21 PM) So you are saying that Iguchi is being shoe-horned into the #2 hole? You think he's a leadoff hitter? I think not. He's a #6 or #7 hitter. This signing is called covering your a**. We DO need OBP guys and Gload is that guy, but we also have pitchers that pitch to contact, we know what we have in Pods...maybe it's not great, but we know what it is. Gload has NEVER played LF for an extended period of time. 2.9 mil for one year isn't a big deal especially for what FA are signing for. LOL, WTF does that mean? We know what we have in Pods, so he should play here? You know what... I think we should go out and get Neifi Perez, too... You know what you'll get form him, too, and it isn't good.
  24. Marquette vs. Northwestern State tonight. Pepsi Blue and Gold Classic. I'm hopin' for a good turnout. It's time to start packin' the place. The guys deserve it, with the wins over Texas Tech, Duke, and on the road at Valpo. I know I'll be there.
  25. QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 06:28 PM) lets just say we keep pods in lf and dont trade uribe because it seems like kw likes him...its going to be the same crap all over again.... 8)uribe 9)anderson 1)pods 2) gooch.... Uribe. Anderson. Podsednik. Which one of these is not like the other? Which one of these just doesn't belong? Two of the above three play good-to-great defense at positions where having a good defender is vital. One of the three plays the easiest defensive position in all of baseball.
