  1. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 09:14 PM) This is the worst deal I've seen made in a long time. No worse than the Kearns deal that Krivsky made around the trade deadline...

    The Office

The opening scene was pretty histerical. I know it's not the more subtle humor, but Jim's pranks on Dwight usually have me laughing my ass off.
  3. I hope the Cubs pay Carlos Lee big bucks. If I were to pick the worst contract that'll be handed out this winter, it would definitely be C-Lee's. Guy's gettin' heavier, is already awful defensively in LF, and is STILL going to get about $13 million per season. I'd much rather see the Cubs get him than any of the other huge name free agents (Soriano, Zito, Mats).
  4. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Nov 9, 2006 -> 03:04 PM) Texas Tech should be pretty good this year. They finally have the depth to make a run at the tournament again. Jackson rejoining the team is of course a great thing, but they even have depth behind him with Charles Burgess a talented Juco transfer, as well as their first legit 7 footer in a while in Ezmir Rizvic, another Juco transfer this year. Ugh, that worries me. Any team with a big man who can do any damage at all around the basket worries me. You're right about the guard matchups, though. It could be one of a couple games with great guard matchups (among others, Wisconsin and hopefully Duke). Aaron Gray. I think he's totally overrated, but I guess we'll see this year. A refined Hibbard from Georgetown worries me much, much more.
  5. Palehosefan (or anyone with knowledge of TTU), how is Texas Tech looking this year? I'm looking forward to a potential Marquette/Texas Tech matchup. Th winner will most likely get Duke, too, so it will be an early measuring stick. Can't wait for the tourney to just get started already. Hillsdale Friday, and then it begins Monday.
  6. QUOTE(jphat007 @ Nov 8, 2006 -> 09:16 PM) Nice .318 OBP Yeah, well, he's a rookie playing in a bad hitting park. He's also playing second-base; there aren't a lot of great hitting secondbasemen. The positional average is lower than, say, RF or 3B. He put up a 94 OPS+ this past season. But Kouzmanoff is a pretty good prospect, and this trade means Cleveland has total belief in Andy Marte's developement. Marte's past 500+ ABs have not been very pretty... I'd say a pretty decent trade for both teams.
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 11:08 PM) The only benefit to the White Sox of signing Moises Alou is that the Tigers and Twins, both of whom could use him, won't get him. Well, that, and the extra 35-40 homers we'd have in LF, and the OBP of around .360. Leadoff hitter? Tadahito Iguchi. Left fielder? Umm.... Alou would play left. We're not talking about Eric Byrnes here, a guy who is only good as a platoon partner. Alou may be turning 40 next year, but the guy can still rake, plain and simple, against lefties or righties. If all Alou is asking for is five million, I hope to God the Sox sign him. The Sox would have the best bargain OF in all of baseball. For under $13 million bucks, 80+ homers, 200+ RBIs, and a good defensive CFer. And to think, Carlos Lee is about to get a contract around that amount of money for just one season.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 09:56 PM) THIS year, which is all that mattered To you. Which is all that mattered to you before the season started. I prefer a team that stays competitive over the long haul. That's not to say the Sox won't be competitive without Young, but they'd be in a much better position going forward, and there's no denying that. I believe that a combination of McCarthy + El Duque (with Haeger potentially in the mix) could have given us what Vazquez gave the 2006 White Sox. You apparently don't feel the same way. I felt going into last year that McCarthy was ready to step into the rotation. I also think you'd be nuts to say you'd rather have Vazquez than all the cash + Chris Young going forward, although maybe you believe that Vazquez can return to his Montreal days, which I honestly can't call crazy. The stuff is there, as we all know, but it's now been three full seasons since Vazquez was anything better than average for a whole season. LOL. So now you turn to a whole 70 major league ABs to make your case. Funny. You're a clever one.
  9. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 08:14 PM) Uh yeah. 5 years down the line didnt mean as much to me as trying to repeat with the best team possible. Five years? Who says that it's going to take Chris Young is going to take five years to develop? There's a strong chance that this year, Chris Young is a more valuable player than Vazquez. Oh, plus the extra $18 million over the next two winters would've been nice to have, too.
  10. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 03:49 PM) Uh yeah. Who gave us the better chance to win the WS last year? A good SP who makes our rotation better, or a guy who would have spent most of the season in AAA? Oh, right, cause so long as for ONE year he gives us a better shot to win the WS, it's a good trade, right? Yikes... :banghead
  11. Apparently Damian Saunders (?) is going to committ to Marquette despite the fact that they have no scholarships left to offer. He's a PF from NDPrep. Any idea on how good this kid is?
  12. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 01:17 PM) Thats the key. You have to wait. See where the chips fall, then strike. There just isn't enough good arms to go around. Someone is going to get left out. When Team "X" doesnt land Zito/Schmidt/Maz, Freddy Garcia or Javier Vazquez start to look pretty attractive. See, I don't think it'll necessarily play out this way, though. Kenny seems to like to set the market, not wait for everything to settle before he makes his move. So you advocated giving up Chris Young, a top ten prospect in all of baseball (probably top 30 heading into last offseason) for a project pitcher?
  13. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 04:25 AM) Pelfrey and Humber, not Milledge are the must have's in any deal with the Mets. Humber would immediately become the Sox' best pitching prospect (quite obviously), but he left the AFL due to shoulder soreness. The injury troubles certainly have to be taken into consideration when talking about Humber. Again, when talking about Pelfrey, that's a different beast. I'd trade Garcia and even throw in some cash to get Pelfrey with the Sox. He's arguably the best pitching prospect in all of baseball right now, and I'd advocate giving up a lot for him.
  14. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 08:06 PM) The Twins rotation had one rookie to start the season. Baker was the only rookie starter to begin the season. Plus none of the guys mention is anything close to a Liriano or Santana. Pelfrey is close. Some argued that he was the best pitcher of the 2005 draft despite the fact that he went 9th (two pitchers went ahead of him). Jason raves about his stuff, too, as do any Mets fans who have a reasonable clue about their farm system. I personally think that people even hoping for Pelfrey are nuts (myself included).
  15. Love that Kenny is aiming high. Milledge and Pelfrey is probably unrealistic, but who cares? Sometimes GMs do dumb things, and with Pedro's hurt shoulder and the overall lack of good starting pitchers for the Mets, you never know. I'd take a step down (although some people might consider Heilman>Humber) and ask for Heilman + Milledge. If need be, see if Cintron intrigues the Mets at all as a guy who could complete their 2nd-base platoon.
  16. Marquette beat Cardinal Stritch, 99-70. Hurray. Wes Matthews was the best out of MU's guard trio. James and McNeal looked a little rusty. McNeal specifically had some mistakes (only one turnover in the box score -- I would've guessed at least one more). I also worry about how they'll match up against teams like Pitt and Georgetown, ie teams with dominant big men, as Marquette doesn't have one guy who can guard a guy like Gray straight up. That said, the on-the-ball defense from the Marquette guards was extremely impressive. Those guys (mainly McNeal and James, but including Cubillan off the bench) are going to create some havok for any teams that don't have a reliable point guard.
  17. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 5, 2006 -> 05:44 AM) A 26 year old career minor leaguer with 2 pitches that had a couple good months in meaningless games isn't a solid 3 spot in any rotation I'd like to have. Yeah, he is quite old for a kid with his short amount of service time, but he's done pretty well for a two-pitch pitcher. His K/9 numbers are nasty. His control is a little whack, and it's something to look at heading into next year. I don't think he'll totally fall off the earth, though; he should be a fine number four next year in the NL. Flash said "reliable", nothing more. Going into next year, Hill will be a fairly reasonable bet to give the Cubs 175 innings (give or take) of an ERA around 4.30.
  18. Trade all of them. Right now. They're following the ways of Satan himself, Brian Anderson.
  19. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 5, 2006 -> 01:48 AM) I have to admit, though, I would definitely cheer for the Cubs to successfully sign Daisuke. For one, his presence in the National League reeps the obvious benefit of avoiding New York or Boston. Two, even with Daisuke, Cubs would only have a reliable rotation two-deep. Offense is still rather soft. Contractual issues with Ramirez would have to resolved quickly. Last point -- and this is personal -- I'd love the opportunity to watch him pitch everygame. RichHill3.
  20. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Nov 4, 2006 -> 01:30 AM) Nice, but that bat looks ginormous. Jim looks quite slim, too. But I generally like the MacFarlane guys. I think I have a Barry Bonds and Marvin Harrison somewhere in my house...
  21. My gosh Gonzalez is an idiot. In what world is Jerry Owens a top prospect? In what world would Jerry Owens be an acceptable starting CFer for a team aspiring for a World Series? Can't this team have but one intelligent beat reporter...? EDIT: Damn, it was Gregor who said it. Yikes. Point remains the same. BTW, I don't see how this can be used against Anderson. Losing 20 pounds in two weeks is a helluva lot of weight to drop. I don't blame BA at all. And still no quotes on the topic from KW, unless I'm missing one. While Guillen continues to rave on and on about BA, the man with the brains hasn't said a word regarding Anderson. IMO, it'd be a pretty short sighted decision to dump Anderson after one year, especially (like Heads said) considering that Williams more or less chose Anderson over Chris Young. If there's a better bang for your buck CFer out there (combining baserunning, defense, and offense), than go get him. I don't see that guy on the free agent market. It's certainly not the one year wonder Gary Matthews, and definitely not Pierre when he gets $8 million a year.
  22. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Nov 4, 2006 -> 06:27 PM) So what stops a team from putting in an outrageous bid and then not even attempting to sign the player? I know TLAK posted the rules above, but I thought that I read that if a team attempted to do something like that, first, it would burn some bridges between that team and the Japanese league/team, and second, the Japanese team/league is allowed to choose the second highest bid. Who wins the posting? I'll say Cubs or Yanks.
  23. Close to 40 hours and counting till Marquette opens against Cardinal Stritch (okay, so what if it's an exhibition).
  24. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Nov 3, 2006 -> 01:24 AM) It starts with the guys at the top of the order. Or with guys who can pitch reasonably well. Like McCarthy.

    The Office

Tonight's episode was funny, but I'm not sure that I like where they're going with it. Don't know that I like that Michael finally crossed that perverbial line. I'll continue to watch, but I'm semi interested yet at the same time dissappointed with where they're going/already gone. I have to admit, though, that Jim falling off the bike was pretty hilarious.
