Sox & Angels Talking; Crede/Garcia for Santana/Figgins
CWSGuy406 replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 09:41 PM) Santana and Garcia could be deemed a wash. How can you say that? Santana and Garcia were roughly equal last year. We'd be getting four years of a relatively cheap Ervin Santana for one year of $10 million dollar-Freddy Garcia. Santana is 23 years old and would have (arguably) the best stuff of anyone on our staff. I agree with your assessment of Figgins, I think he's quite overrated and would do anything to get Crede out of this deal and still get Santana. If Garcia + Fields for Santana were possible, I'd do it in a heartbeat. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 09:38 PM) In the last update Offman never used the word "close" he said they were in trade discussions that would involve those players but the word "close" was never used. Yeah, I heard it online. Nothing is imminent. Offman just said the teams are talking. -

New ESPN/USA Today rankings are out and can be seen here. I'll wait for someone else to format it properly, but Ohio State is their new number one, followed by UCLA, Pitt, Florida, and Kansas. Marquette cracks the top ten at number nine, while Wisconsin falls to 13. Butler's in at #18, and Wichita State is there at 22. U of I is right on the Top 25 cusp (they'll certainly be in with a W over Maryland), receiving the most votes for a non-Top 25 team, and I'm surprised that the Salukis aren't being respected yet, only getting a couple of votes. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 04:36 AM) Oh and I'm confident the Boys can beat the Bears now. Why, 'cause the Bears lost to a top three AFC team on the road by four? That convinced you? Let's see how Dallas does at New York next week. Should be a decent measuring stick, considering the Bears have rolled through every 'good' NFC team put on their schedule...

Yuck. Hate the play-call on 2nd down there. Run a play that's designed to go out to the flat? Really limiting your options, there, and on third down, Grossman had more time than he thought.
-
The offense seems so close to breaking through, only to have Grossman throw a pick or the O-line to take a bad penalty. Keep makin' plays, D. Back even. The one PI call was weak, but it makes up for that "incidental content" non-call on Berrian earlier in the game. Oh, and Joe Buck sucks.
-
Gosh dammit I hate that. You're telling me that Kruetz can't push Wilfork two inches forward to get that first down? My gosh... and Maynard boots it into the endzone. f***... I hate that.

QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Nov 26, 2006 -> 06:19 PM) It would be for the Sox's but it maybe not for the Dbacks considering all the debt this team has and the FA market being out of this world and the 2 players Hairston (out of options & blocked), Callaspo is blocked by Drew, Hudson and others. Freddy would be a huge upgrade over whomever we had in the 2nd or 3rd spot last year. I know Hairston is being considered for the LF spot this year, but can he play 2B? That's what he's listed as on BaseballCube, but I've never heard or seen him having a shot at 2B once Hudson leaves. If he can handle 2nd (decently enough), then I'd hope to get one of their pitchers in the deal. Owings is a guy that one of the minor league experts on another board has raved about, so he'd be a nice addition.

If they even think about overturning this, I'll flip. Absolutely no evidence that the ball hit the ground. No way it can/should be overturned.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 26, 2006 -> 12:09 PM) What Pods did in '05 with his very solid 1st half was spark this team to what proved to an insurmountable lead that allowed the to reach the playoffs, which in turn allowed them to bring home the trophy. And tell me, YASNY, what exactly Podsednik sparked? Oh, right, a 9th place (in the AL) offense. I would never, ever want a future Sox to copy ANYTHING from that 2005 offense (except the power. power = goodzzzz). Because...? 'Cause Ozzie said/thinks so? Because Ozuna has always been there to do a nice job against left-handed pitchers. Look -- I'm not saying that KW and co. should go about the rest of the offseason with the thinking that, "hey, we already have our leadoff hitter". What I'm saying is that the Sox shouldn't "force" a leadoff hitter on the team just for the hell of it. If it ends up that way, that you come up with a real "leadoff hitter" (one of the slap hitting joys like the one we've had the past two years), then so beit. I'm saying that, if the Sox end up with say, Jose Guillen out in LF, ie a guy who isn't an ideal top-of-the-order hitter, they shouldn't back themselves into a corner and say, "Oh, s***, now we gotta get Furcal or Vizquel or Rollins or else we won't have a real leadoff man!" That's not a smart way to go about things. And before anyone brings up the name, no, Jerry Owens is not a good option. Dude's going to be a 4th OFer... He has absolutely no power, and his OBP is too batting average reliant.

QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Nov 26, 2006 -> 04:20 AM) The Dbacks are still very interseted in Freddy Garcia or one of the Sox's starters. The Dbacks need another starter from somewhere and that stocked farm system should come in handy. I'd make the deal for Hairston and that 2nd-base prospect of theirs, although that looks (on paper) quite lopsided in favor of the Sox.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 26, 2006 -> 06:09 AM) Their lucky that wide open 3 rimmed off, or i'd be a loss already. KU is playing great, Florida awful, and it's tied.....says a lot about how good Florida is IMO. I don't think Florida has been "awful". Brewer has played great, and while Noah hasn't had as many touches as you'd ideally want him to have, he's been quite effective passing the ball and making good on his low-post touches. Defensively they've probably been a bit off, but I doubt Donovan expected to be forced to go zone so early in the game. This has been one great basketball game. #2 so far in the year to a certain game in which Duke was defeated... -

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 26, 2006 -> 06:06 AM) This is awesome. f*** Kansas. Yeah -- normally I'd root for the upset, but it's Kansas, so, I'll just root for Julian (gotta root for a guy you played against). Plus, I want another team ahead of Marquette to lose so MU can grab a top ten spot. -
QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 26, 2006 -> 02:49 AM) Dude, the sox aren't going to have Iguchi leadoff. I'll post this one more time hoping that you actually read it: Yes. Plenty of opportunities... because he's been here for a whole, what is it, two years? And it's not like we already had a "leadoff hitter" here in Podsednik or anything, right? Then again, maybe a better option would be to go after Christian Guzman, ehh? Maybe he's a good option cause he could probably steal some bases, right beck?
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 25, 2006 -> 10:52 PM) I think the "plug Iguchi into the leadoff spot" people aren't listening to what the sox have said for a while now. For me, it's not necessarily what I think will happen, it's what I want to happen if someone else isn't brought in (there are still options -- Kenny Lofton being one, although someone said that there were some problems between he and KW). And I don't like that you or the Sox organization are "pigeon-holing" Iguchi as a #2, #5, or whatever hitter. He's a versataille player. He could hit pretty much in any spot in the lineup if you asked him to. Personally, I don't think a guy with a career .430 slugging percentage would be a great #5 hitter. We have those spots covered, anyways; Dye, followed by Crede and AJ. What we don't have is a guy who has shown he can get on consistently at the top of the order. We have that guy already on the team. If Iguchi is going to have a career year, it's going to be this year; contract year, and his third year in the majors, but right around the age where 2nd-basemen generally start to fall off. If given free reign over most of his ABs (ie not asked to hit behind anyone or bunt 10-15 times per year), I think he'd be fully capable of a .290/.360/.450 season.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 25, 2006 -> 07:04 PM) Plenty of people will tell you we don't need to upgrade Anderson, and I don't believe we have to upgrade Uribe, either. Sorry. Yup. Gimmie a new LFer, perhaps another good bullpen arm, and get that great haul for Garcia (or whichever starter is traded). And then let's head to Arizona.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 25, 2006 -> 01:43 PM) The problem is not in finding a superior left fielder. It's in finding a superior leadoff hitter. No, it's the other way around. Leadoff hitter isn't a position. We have one on the roster right now. He's our 2nd-baseman. Whether or not our manager is too thick headed to put him there is another thing. QUOTE(AirScott @ Nov 25, 2006 -> 06:22 PM) I'm one of the people who says what Pods brings is beyond the numbers. he's disruptive, and when he's healthy and at his best, he's terrific stealing bases. anyone who's watched the White Sox World Series DVDs has to remember the line that says "You know he's going to steal. You just don't know when," or something to that effect. besides, who else is out there? an aging Dave Roberts? an overrated Chone Figgins? thank God the Dodgers overpaid Pierre, so that debate's over. LOLerz. Yeah, Pods was sooooo great in 2005, leading our offense to what, 9th in the AL in runs scored? I can't think of any other position play on the 2006 White Sox who was as useless as Pods was last season. Outside of one month, the guy couldn't hit. His defense wasn't great, and he got picked off and thrown out way too much. And as DA said, what's to say he won't be hurt next year? He got hurt in '05, and came into '06 recovering from surgery. Yeah, speed never slumps... it just gets hurt and costs your team runs through stubborn-ness.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 25, 2006 -> 03:28 AM) BABIP is a worthless stat. In your opinion. I mean, I know you've put in hours and hours of study in which you've proven that BABIP is a worthless stat and everything, but you could at least qualify your statement by saying it's your opinion ...

How'd everyone's birds turn out? We did one in the oven as well as one in the deep fryer. The fried one was probably left in for about five minutes too long (which is funny, because the recipe called for ten MORE minutes -- if we didn't take it out when we did, the thing would've burnt to a crisp), but it was still delicious. We also tried a different type of mashed potatoes this year -- Elton Brown's way with garlic cloves and parmasean cheese) -- and they were also delicious. And now it's leftovers for the next few days -- no complaints here.

So Wisconsin lost to Missouri State today? Nice... Good chance Marquette is top ten after this week. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 24, 2006 -> 02:53 AM) Pods sucks. He will be too expensive with what he brings to the table. Sweeney at the new major league minimum of $380,000 is a better option. I'm really not worried about who then leads off. Perhaps someone else could be acquired, but the leadoff man is only guaranteed to lead off once a game. Yeah. He's really not a good baseball player. There's a reason he didn't stick with a big league team until he was 27. There's better options available in free agency, even if they don't want to pay big money to JD Drew, such as Jose Guillen. It would be an absolute failure of an offseason if #22 is still prancing around LF next season.

Anyone else start Tony Romo in fantasy this week? Woot!

So I see I'm not the only one who's going to go the route of buying the Wii in addition to the 360 or PS3 (most likely the former). My only reason to get the PS3 would be for getting SOCOM, my favorite non-computer online game. Since 360 will release GTA at the same time that PS3 does, however, I think I'll probably go that route.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Nov 23, 2006 -> 12:23 AM) He'd be a great investment at about 5 or 6 million per year. Agreed. But he's making twice that for the next five years. And I know you're in no way defending the contract -- I'm just speaking to how bad this contract really is. What would everybody say is the "best" contract out of the three OFers signed so far, Pierre, Soriano, or Matthews? I hate to say it, but you could make a pretty good case for it being Soriano's... and Carlos Lee and JD Drew haven't even signed yet...
-
QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Nov 22, 2006 -> 10:32 PM) Name the players that you would rank ahead of him. In all of baseball? Cameron, Beltran, Wells, Patterson, and a healthy Torii Hunter. Juan Pierre probably covers more ground (although his arm is weaker). Endy Chavez, although he isn't an everyday player, is a better defender. And one could probably make a case for two guys in the Central, Anderson and Sizemore. I've seen Texas plenty, as I watch a ton of baseball with MLBEI package. I wasn't blown away by Sarge Jr's defense -- he was good, but not elite, IMO. Dude had a career (fluke?) year at the right time. He's 32 and has a career OPS of .755. He's had more than five hundred ABs just once in his career. He's stuck around in this league because he's been a good, cheap 3rd/4th OFer type. BTW -- let's just say that his defense is, in fact, well above average. Is his D going to get better over the length of this contract? Moreover, can anyone honestly tell me that they expect Gary to even come close to his 2006 numbers ever again?
