QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 06:21 PM) Williams hasn't liked playing the FA game since he has been here. That IMO was one of the major reasons the Vazquez deal was made last year. I don't blame Williams for that at all. Especially the bullpen. Honestly, I don't see the bullpen as a huge problem heading into next year. Our top three is as solid as they come. I'd like to see Kenny bring in a reliever from the Asian market, and let that guy compete with Haeger / Perez / Aardsma / Logan for the final three spots.

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 06:16 PM) Logan's offspeed stuff is twice as good as Neal's was. I think that Logan can be much more effective vs LHP than Cotts was. I agree. I was fairly impressed with Logan's stuff. His fastball seemed faster than Cotts', and at his age, he has a much better secondary pitch than Cotts has ever had. I echo your sentiments that Booooone can be a solid LOOGY.

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 06:10 PM) You might as well copy this statement....you'll be saying it again shortly. Hey, Mr. "Carlos Pena will be our starting 1B-man next season" -- I don't want to see any predictions out of you.
-
Oh yeah -- what does this mean for the Sox bullpen? It could be one of... a.) Haeger doesn't have a lock on that sixth bullpen spot like everybody thinks. b.) The Sox will give their "David Riske" roll to someone within the organization, such as Oneli Perez or Aardsma. Meaning the Sox won't be going after Speier. c.) The Sox go to to a seven man bullpen even though they haven't done this the past two years (I hate this option).

It's going to be tough for Cotts to duplicate his 2005 success without a second pitch. Even in his dominance during 2005, that was all with his "sneaky" fastball. He located well and got hitters to chase sometimes, but as I said, it'll be tough for him to dominate with a 91 MPH fastball, funky delivery or not.

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 05:31 PM) I'll say this: Aardsma is better than Tracey. Aardsma's problem is that he overthrows. I'm just disappointed because I thought Cotts would have brought in better value than he did. Pretty much, this seems like a lateral move. The reliever we got back had good K numbers last year, and was 23 pitching in AA. But who knows -- last year was his first season pitching exclusively out of the 'pen. It's hard to call it a "brutal" trade as you did.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 05:25 AM) I took my GF to her 1st game that day. Good one to see... And who scored the winning run in that game? (someone better post the answer in picture form)

QUOTE(ptatc @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 02:26 AM) There's nothing wrong with that if you like the Earl Weaver all or nothing offense. I just prefer the players with higher ave and OBP (too clog up the bases) to compliment the speed. Just a matter of preference. But Young is an OBP guy. His isolated plate discipline (OBP - AVG) is close to .100 over his minor league career. His OBP the past two seasons in the minors has been .377 and .363. So really, the only knock on Young is his K's. He's arguably as complete a player as you'll find in all of the minors (or, in recently-graduated-to-the-majors players).
-
QUOTE(ptatc @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 12:13 AM) I think Young will be more like the player most people compare him to: Mike Cameron. A very good defensive player who will steal bases and hit homeruns but relagated to support roles because of an all or nothing approach and will move around the league alot. Not a bad ballplayer but nothing really special either. Really? Players who play above average defense in CF while stealing 20-30 bases and hit 20-30 HRs plus a crapload of doubles are "really nothing special"? Heh... shows what I know.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 10:27 PM) When I saw the score I thought it had to be a mistake. Then I kept thinking they must of been talking women's basketball. December 9th is marked on my calender, SB. You going to make it up (or down -- obviously don't know where you live) to the Bradley Center for the game? Should be a good one... -
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 07:55 PM) Am I going to have to kick your ass in this game as well? PS Young and Tatum are rated better than every Illini player in the game. What about the Marquette trio? And Lazar Hayward?

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 03:14 AM) Well Marquette was a lot better tonight. James and Hayward were dominant, and so were they in an 87-45 win over Detroit. I was told Hayward had an outside jumper. I didn't see it. Until tonight. Great win up and down. The only player who notably played real bad was Fitzgerald. Watch SC tonight. James threw an ally-oop from a couple steps in front of halfcourt to Lawrence Blackledge who threw it down. Dude has some LONG arms. On the next possesion James came down and threw a behind-the-back pass to Barro who slammed it. Really fun night. There will be tough nights when the shots don't fall, but man, we're going to be tough to beat when we play like we did tonight (I know you can say that about plenty of other teams, too, however). -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 06:19 AM) Yeah, I saw you guys struggled against like High Point the other night too. Does this have to do with the fact that Marquette has nothing inside at all, other than Ousmane Barro *cringes*?? Actually, no. Oose has been okay. No inside game, but he's doing a good job of cleaning up the glass. The "4th best backcourt in the country" is the problem right now. I could go on and on about it, so I'll try to keep the "Why Marquette Currently Sucks" points to a minimum: -James gets to the basket any time he wants to, but then he seemingly throws up poor shots when he gets to the hoop. -McNeal is SPECTACULAR defensively, but really shouldn't be a main feature in the offense. His jumper isn't where it needs to be yet, and he frequently turns the ball over trying to force a drive. -Wes Matthews doesn't get the ball nearly enough. He's very tough to guard and scores in traffic down low. Pathetic that Marquette's most effective scorer had under ten points, huh? -The offense as a whole is in a world of hurt right now. Teams are zoning us and we can't answer. I hope to God I'm wrong, but I fear that the people who pegged this team as top 20 (myself included) greatly underestimated the loss of Novak. Lazar Hayward, Marquette's best freshman, was supposed to be able to hit from long range, and he hasn't even shot the ball any further than the block yet, and Dan Fitzgerald, our tall white dude who can shoot the trey looks extremely hesitant, despite the fact that really, his main job is to hit threes. -Did I mention that, while this team gets to the line and will get to the line a heckuva lot this season, that we suck at the charity stripe? At one point tonight, James missed three in a row. Fitzgerald could've iced it at the end with two at the line (when Marquette was trailing by one), and he could only bury one. You saw the numbers... 51%. Brutal. Of all people, Oose Barro was able to put the game away at the line with two swooshes, and his shot is one of the worst you'll see in all of D1 basketball. -Defensively, this team is tough. There's some overaggressiveness at times, but the three guards, including freshman David Cubillan off the bench, are extremely good defenders. I still worry about when we have to go up against the Hubbard's or Hansborough's or Grey's of the NCAA, but I think we'll be able to play really strong defense. We'll see tomorrow against Detroit. If they play like they did last nite, they will lose by 20, possibly more. Who knows, maybe it's better that they go down and have some time off to work on -- well, everything offense. Would much rather have a shot to play Texas Tech next week, but at this point, I can totally see Detroit pulling off the W in front of the Marquette faithful. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 05:01 AM) Notre Dame lost to Butler?!?!?! Butler is only the 3rd or 4th best team in the Horizon this year, that's a horrible loss. Also, Boston College got run out of their own gym by Vermont tonight. Wow.... Marquette almost lost. We (sorry, habit) pulled it out in OT, but it was ugly. To paint a picture for y'all: -Marquette took 18 more FGs than Idaho State. -Marquette took 26 (!) more FTs than Idaho State. -Idaho State turned the ball over 24 times to Marquette's 11 (actually, 13). And Marquette won by all of three points. The shooting was atrocious. The Eagles shot 20% from beyond the arc (5-for-25), a much better (heh) 29% from the field total, and a shiny 51.6% from the free throw line. We play like that tomorrow, and we won't even get a chance to face Texas Tech. Detroit will run us out of our own f***ing gym. -

Awful return by Hester. All he needed to do was not fumble and not go backwards. He lost at least three yards there. I would've been totally content with a fair catch at the 40...

Until that last drive, I really wasn't impressed with Turner's playcalling. That's been a problem all season, but I guess it's just becoming more frustrated with the lost last week and our play so far this week. Grossman isn't particularly sharp, but he hasn't been bad so far, and I doubt Griese would've produced anymore points right now.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 04:02 AM) Drew is a pretty good player when he's healthy. He'll get you, at the very least, 20, 100 and a good BA. Aside from that, I don't really know much about him. Is he a good fielder? Will the White Sox want to dish out the money Drew will likely command? Very solid defensively. Could probably play an average CF if asked. The main reason people like him is because he's an OBP machine. His lowest OBP ever was .349, and for his career, it's at .393. Plus, if he were to stay healthy for a whole season, he'd probably hit 25 homers playing at US Cellular.

Well, Marquette won last night by ten... But they were pretty terrible. Dominic James, in particular, was 3-of-15 from the field. As usual, he gets to the basket quite easily, but has a tough time getting his shot over the big guys and ends up throwing up some slop shot or making a bad pass. McNeal and Matthews weren't a whole lot better, combining for nine turnovers. The #4 ranked backcourt in the nation certainly hasn't lived up to the billing. The only encouragement I got was from Ooose Barro, Marquette's starting center who will need to play well if Marquette has any hopes at finishing top four in the Big East. He had real good positioning all game long on the boards, and defended pretty well too. I'm very unimpressed through two games. The talent is there, but they aren't cohesive yet. Maybe I'm expecting too much for just two games, but I'm hoping after this tourney starting Monday, they'll be looking a lot better. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 09:28 PM) Sanchez was pretty damn good last year, I think he put up a sub 2 ERA in AA and sub 4 in AAA. I would say that would put him right up there as a top prospect. We're debating semantics, as determining who is a better pitching prospect is tough. But I thought I also read that there are some injury concerns with Sanchez. This isn't 100% certain, and I could be completely wrong, but I thought I read that. He is a pretty big guy; Baseballcube has him listed at 6'6, 230. My main point, though, was that Detroit is dealing from a surplus here, and I think it's reasonable to say that Sanchez is second behind Miller (reasonable, not concrete fact by any means). I'd take Miller because his college pedigree and dominance and his stuff as a lefty. But I do agree with you that this is quite the haul for New York.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 09:18 PM) Given the Reds need for pitching, this deal easily takes the cake in my opinion. How so? Krisvky gave up Kearns for mediocre relievers, and what he thought was an "upgrade" at short in Royce Clayton. Sanchez isn't even Detroit's best pitching prospect. He's arguably their number three at the moment, behind Tata (Taja? something of the sort) and Miller. That also doesn't mention Ledezma who will most likely move into the rotation in the next two years. I'm not saying this is a bad deal for Detroit. Given the Yankees' situation, I think this was a pretty good job by Cashman. But Sheffield is still a very good offensive player when healthy.
