The atmosphere at Rexall tonight -- on TV -- looked absolutely amazing. These folks are loud THE ENTIRE GAME. Even during the dry parts of the game, you can still hear the "Let's Go Oilers" chant in the background. What a series. That was awesome, and Edmonton will go on to play Anahiem. Playoff hockey is the best. -
QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ May 17, 2006 -> 07:59 PM) That, and the 18M he's due this year. The Gaints team is not going to win a World Series, which I know will be your arguement he wants a ring, so I think he's in it for the money and passing Ruth I'm embarrassed that you're a 'fan' of the team I root for.
-
If this team calls up Chad Bentz rather than Sean Tracey, Jeff Nelson, or Javier Lopez, yamo be pissed.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 15, 2006 -> 03:32 AM) I'm not offended, he wasn't saying anything about me, however for Frank to go out like a baby towards the organization that brought him up, paid him and treated him like a king, and won him a world series ring while he couldn't walk.....was a bit sad. And if you don't know what specifically what he said about the organization, then you clearly werent' paying attention. It's sad that Thomas wanted to finish his career with the only team that he had ever known? See, I guess I interpret what he said differently -- I view it as: the guy talked THAT MUCH about the Sox after he left, showing that he really didn't want to leave. Thomas loved Chicago, and it showed... We -- the "Frank defenders", as you have so elequently dubbed us -- have admitted that Frank did say some dumb things when he left, such as the poke at Thome (which he did apologize for) and Reinsdorf. As for his personality being indefensible? You don't know him, quit trying to act like you do. He was dubbed a cancer because the teams he were apart of sucked, so the media put all the bearing on his shoulders, even though he was one of the few who actually did his job. Combine that with the fact that Thomas, unlike a Paul Konerko or a Derrek Lee, wasn't a reporter's "dream" guy, and vwah-la. Thomas certainly wasn't perfect along the way -- he probably isn't an angel -- but I'm pretty sure that he received a lot of undeserved criticism in his time here.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 15, 2006 -> 03:20 AM) lol @ the Frank defenders, so silly. Oh, and you say it's my fault for stirring the pot like I care CWSGuy, which I don't. I couldn't care less, and why would anybody go to Cooperstown to see Frank be inducted? He will probably just rip the organization like he always does. Apparently you care enough to respond back to me. Good try, though. Maybe you should just stick to your "insight" on college basketball...

QUOTE(SnB @ May 15, 2006 -> 12:08 AM) i HATE people like you. ^^^ People who put as much, or more passion, into hating the Cubs as liking the Sox really piss me off. It almost seems like they're just "Sox fans" because they aren't the Cubs. A couple of days ago, the Sox lost, and one of friend's came up to me and is like, "Well, at least the Cubs loss". Maybe I've matured out of it, but I take no more solace in seeing the Cubs lose. Am I rooting for them to win? Nah, but I'm much more concerned with the likes of the Indians, Tigers, and Twins.
-
QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 14, 2006 -> 10:37 PM) I doubt any of you actually go to Cooperstown to watch Frank get inducted. You Frank bashers bring up the dumbest arguments against those of us who have supported him. "You guys are so stupid 'cuz you like Thomas and would rather have him than Thome." "You guys like him, but none of you are actually gonna go see him get inducted." "I hope he wears an A's uni into the HOF!" Fine, you don't like him. Just, please, stop spewing useless crap on the subject, like you guys have been doing for the past five months. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 12, 2006 -> 04:45 PM) Shocking news, and obviously a big loss since as Frank would tell you, he's better and less injury prone than Thome. I'd also like to point out that wsf101 was the one who started the s***-stirring in this thread with this dumbass post (hehe, what else is new?). You guys bring it upon yourselves, really...

QUOTE(fathom @ May 14, 2006 -> 08:01 PM) Me neither. They have 5 legit starting pitchers, a solid bullpen, and a very strong hitting team. There's no reason to think they can't contend for the title all season. Mike Maroth's career ERA is 4.72. This year, it's 2.55. Nate Robertson's career ERA is 4.76. This year, it's 3.27. Color me skeptical. These two won't be pitching on cloud nine forever...

The single season RBI leader is Hack Wilson who, in 1930, drove in 191 runs. Albert Pujols will break that record (he's on pace to be right around there as of May 14th). True statement?

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ May 12, 2006 -> 10:25 PM) The Big Skirt has been doing that s*** for 5 years now. f*** him. Everything good he did for the organization was more than cancelled out by his big mouth. If and when he ever makes the hall of fame I hope they send his sorry ass in an A's uniform. We dont want anything to do with him anymore. Nuke, maybe people will agree with what you're saying if you type in caps lock and swear some more. It always seems to work, so maybe it'll work here.

QUOTE(joeynach @ May 14, 2006 -> 05:11 PM) I remeber when Vazquez faced the Blue Jays and had that one terrible inning, to me it mirrored yesterdays game against the twins. Oz and the sox said they thought Vazquez was tiping his pitches to the Jays becuase they never saw so many hitters swing at nothing but the fastball and take every breaking pitch. In that game he wound up giving up a solid 6 or 7 runs in a bad inning again all with 7 or 8 hits staked together. The same thing happened last night, and if you watch very closely the twins hitters all got their hits on fastballs. They didn't even attempt to swing at any thing else and this seems a little fishy again. The whole situation was identical to the toronto game and I thought something was up again last night, expecially when some of the worst hitters in the game stack 7 to 8 hits against one of the best pitchers, all sitting on and only swinging at fastballs. Off the top of my head, this is incorrect. Without even looking at a replay of that inning, I vividly remember Morneau getting his single on an offspeed pitch on the outside corner (a changeup), and same goes for Torii Hunter.

QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ May 14, 2006 -> 04:54 AM) They suck when they're healthy. They're not that good. :banghead Mark Prior -- career ERA+, 132. Kerry Wood -- career ERA+, 116. To say they suck because they're never healthy is one thing. To say that they suck when they are healthy is blind stupidity, especially in Prior's case. I'd take him on our team in a second, regardless of health issues.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 14, 2006 -> 12:40 AM) Keith, you asked the question, and I answered. I really didnt think how it worked out went into the equation.... Sure it does. It strengthens my point that relievers are extremely volatile. The most consistent guys are usually the best in the game, and I doubt those types are a.)available and b.)in our 'price' range. Kenny Williams makes his 'money' in the bullpen by grabbing some project arms and castoffs, and generally, he grabs the right guys. Dick Allen, I'm not saying Lopez or Tracey or Nelson are going to come in and be the next Scot Shields, although I happen to think Tracey will be a solid reliever in the future. But I think if Lopez right now is a better option than Boone Logan, as Lopez has had some success and he can miss some bats. Same goes for Nelson, although (again), in a limited role -- I'm talking as a ROOGY. With Tracey, I don't care what he did in Spring Training. He clearly wasn't good, and his pitches had very little movement. A year ago, The Baseball Analysts talked about how much movement his pitches had. Hell, Jason's been talking about his nasty stuff for the past two years. He's certainly better than what he showed in Tuscon, and I think he's a guy who, in the very near future, can come up and do a solid job.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 13, 2006 -> 08:50 PM) Koch was coming off a great season when we traded for him.... And, as everybody knows, that worked out just fantastic now, didn't it (leaving Cotts out of the equation for just a moment)? Before making any moves, I'd like to see a couple of our AAA arms given a shot to succeed -- Tracey, Lopez, and Nelson. I'm willing to bet we'd 'hit it lucky' on at least one of those guys...

When was the last time Kenny Williams traded for -- or even signed -- a big name free agent reliever? Look at the dominant relief pitchers that have carried the White Sox bullpen over the past five years. Bobby Jenks, Neal Cotts, Cliff Politte, Damaso Marte, Shingo Takatsu (verson '04), Flash Gordon, Kelly Wunsch, Keith Foulke -- not ONE in the bunch was a big name free agent signing. Guys like Politte, Hermanson, and Gordon were castoffs who other teams thought were done. I just think that you guys hoping for a trade to save the bullpen are going to be letdown. First off, trading for relievers is a really stupid idea, considering how volatile these guys are (except for the very best -- those, BTW, cost an arm and two legs). Kenny Williams will continue scanning the waiver wire, hoping someone slips, and, if possible, pick up a Matt Thorton type -- a guy who he believes that given the proper coaching, Cooper and co. can fix. I highly doubt, however, that you'll see KW trade Lance Broadway for a 'quick fix'. I'm actually a little surprised that we didn't see KW go after one of the Japanese bullpen arms that came over this year. It seems that they tend to have a one year grace period, like that Takashi Saito for the Dodgers, who's been pretty good for LA thus far.

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ May 9, 2006 -> 04:16 AM) This sharks/oilers game is just awesome. 2-1 sharks after 2. You can't beat these playoffs, they've been unreal. I know I'm a day late, but the penalty kill that San Jose put in on that 5-on-3 was, without a doubt, the best PK I've ever seen. For those that didn't see, Edmonton had a 1:50 5-on-3 power play. The puck was kept in the offensive zone the whole time. With about :50 seconds left, two San Jose players break their sticks. Essentially, at this point, it's a 5-on-1.5, as the only two San Jose players with sticks are the goalie and one of the defenders. The Sharks' player -- I forgot who -- ends up diving for a lose puck and gloving it out of the zone. Of course, the Oilers scored about a minute later, but it was still one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. -
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 9, 2006 -> 05:25 AM) As for the Cubs, don't you think they'd LOVE to have John Koronka back. He's only 25 years old, a lefty, and is now 4-1 with a 3.65 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 25 to 12 K/BB ratio in 44.1 IP for the freaking Rangers. Nice job letting him go Flubs, you really got a king's ransom for him in Freddie Bynum, who is out of options and probably will be released outright because of how horrendously bad he is. You're overrating Koronka. He's had a couple of nice starts. He's not very good, and should revert to his suck-ness sooner rather than later.

At the time of last year's draft, I thought that Bogusevic was a step below Carrillo and Broadway. For that reason, I'm only going to talk about the latter two. I'd guess that this was a really tough decision -- I wouldn't be surprised to hear that half of the Sox scouts wanted Carrillo, while the other half wanted Broadway. Carrillo had a more sustained success in a tougher conference. For two years, he put up ERA's of 2.22 and 2.69. Broadway, OTOH, had one great year, but in that year, he was truely dominant -- he put up a 1.62 ERA while striking out 151 (!!) in 117 IP. That's amazing in itself, but I'd tend to guess (is this correct?) that Carrillo's conference was tougher than Broadway's. It was pretty much a toss up (IMO). I wouldn't have been angry if they took Carrillo. The only thing that left me a little disheartened (that might not be the right word) was that people were already calling Broadway a bust and criticizing the pick while citing Carrillo's stats at the end of 2005. I'm really happy that Broadway has quieted some of the critics with his superb start, and he should help this team in one way or another (even if it means bringing in major league talent in a trade).

Unbelievable -- New Jersey scores with 20 seconds left, and Carolina ties it with THREE seconds on the clock. I LOVE PLAYOFF HOCKEY!!! -
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 8, 2006 -> 11:32 PM) I would rather have Redding. No, Redding doesn't pitch with smoke and mirrors and may not be aesthetically pleasing, but, he has 21 wins against major league ballclubs and we know he isn't going to piss down his leg in front of 30K. Oh come on Addy, GMAB. Redding sucks. He's terrible. Look at his past stats. He's had ONE -- count 'em -- ONE above average season. Oh, yeah, and that was in 2003. In 2004, his ERA was 5.72, and last year, his ERA was 10.72. This guy is done, and is, AT BEST, nothing more than a AAA filler. The "veteran presence" doesn't mean squat, either. Haeger -- out of all of the other options, ie Redding, Tracey, Broadway -- gives the Sox the BEST chance to win on Wednesday. BTW, Haeger couldn't ask for better conditions here. He's facing an Anahiem lineup which currently ranks 12th in the AL in runs scored. He's also pitching at home, which could work both ways -- I list it as a positive because he'll have 25K behind him, rather than in a tough environment on the road. I'd also like to say that, as a baseball fan, I'm excited to see a knuckler live. There's something that I love about seeing major league hitters being baffled by guys with funky deliveries, slow stuff, etc. I'm not at all happy about Contreras' injury, but then again, we Sox fans really aren't in a position to complain -- this team has been blessed with good health for a while now (outside of Thomas). This is neat. I'm looking forward to Wednesday... (Get well soon, Conde!)

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 5, 2006 -> 03:34 PM) And they've got lots of prospects to trade at the deadline if they wanted to make a run, but I wouldn't do that if I was Josh Byrnes. I can say with almost 100% certainty that they won't be doing that. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see them dump some veterans at the deadline. This D-Backs team isn't built for this year -- they're looking at '07 and beyond.

QUOTE(WCSox @ May 5, 2006 -> 11:16 PM) If you want to bring offense into the argument, sure. But if you're only talking about defense, I see very little difference in range or arm strength. But after the plays that A-Rod botched at 3B in the playoffs last year, I'll give Jeter the slight defensive edge. -
Yes, home runs are, in fact, evil. Stolen bases and sac bunts are where it's at, baby. Thome is playing like ass this year. Can you believe the nerve of that guy -- ZERO stolen bases and only ONE sacrifice hit? WTF is that? We need more smallball.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 1, 2006 -> 02:13 PM) Haha, yeah Edmonton has got to win game 6 at home though, no way they win at "The Joe" in game 7. I just am supposed to hate the Wings since i'm a Hawks fan, even though you guys are obviously in a different class than us. Sure the Oilers can. They're 2-1 at Detroit so far this series, they can take one up there. It might be more difficult than just finishing it off at Rexall tonight, but Edmonton has played EXTREMELY well at the Joe in this series. Hell, the first game was pretty much a coinflip that Detroit got lucky on. The trap that Edmonton is running has worked wonders, and Chris Pronger is having a helluva series, offensively and defensively. I see Pronger play, and that's what I want Seabrook to be -- our defensive "rock" (so to speak), the guy who is going to get 25-35 minutes per playoff game. You're certainly right about the playoff games, though -- they've been great. Much, MUCH better than anything the NBA has to offer (as usual), IMO.
