BTW -- McCarthy's line tonight (in a rain shortened game): 7 IP, 7 Ks, 3 Hs, 0 R, 0 BBs. His ERA is down to 4.18. Quick saying that he's just gonna be a #4-#5 is one of the dumbest things I've read on this site in a while.

QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 01:48 AM) listen, we could go tit for tat all night, let me know when the great Wes whisler or the great tyler Lumsden makes it. Or how about those terrific catching prospects we got last year. s*** those guys are great, and the great Kris Honel. The last 4 years or so we really don't have much nor do I see stud in the making and I am including Jeremy Reed who everyone thought was the next great thing. No thanks, by the way Mcarthy will be a 4 or 5 not an ace. Come back to me in two years. We will see how everything turns out. The lotto has odds about the same as these guys making it big in the pros. Oh by the way Crede blows too. Remember he was going to be our all star third baseman. The next Bill Melton. I just love how we developed those great shortstops the past 10 years, and the great second baseman, since Durham. You would think by accident we could have found a catcher. But no. and this draft holy s***, this draft really knocked my socks off.We will contin ue this conversation in a couple of years. Don't quit your day job...

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 01:43 AM) I've never compared the two. If you're referring to me making the comparison, I was just responding to your statement about the two having similar slugging percentages. BTW -- Young is slugging almost .550 in a pitchers paradise, while Borchard is slugging .470 (approx) in a hitter's park.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 01:40 AM) Doesn't Chris Young strikeout a lot also? But he walks, too. And, each month, his K/BB ratio has gotten better. I'm seeing improvement in all facets, like hitting for power, controlling the strike zone, making contact, etc -- not the same for Borchard. The Borchard to Young comparison is awful.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 01:36 AM) Borchard's numbers have been pretty impressive since May 1. Do you think he should be on the team? Not really... he's still striking out a lot, and not walking a lot, which are pretty important. And, a .467 SLG% at Charlotte isn't great. I bet Chris Young will/could surpass .500 next year.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 01:34 AM) But he has posted on this board, so he should be on the team. He has good numbers, that's why he should be on the team.

Geez -- Kapler and Millar are playing Ozuna VERY deep...

I'd be happy taking one here from Boston. Three out of six at Boston/New York is nothing to be ashamed of, even for playoff contenders.
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 09:34 PM) He's not. True aces include, Peavy, Santana, Mulder, Hudson, Halladay, Oswalt, Clemens, Schmidt(when healthy), Johnson(when healthy), Schilling(when healthy), Garland, Livan Hernandez, Colon, Harden. Those guys are aces. They're all great pitchers and have no problems taking out elite teams. Wait... Mulder is a career ERA+ of 115. Buehrle is a career ERA+ of 125. Yet Mulder is the ace? Credibility? Down the drain.

QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) Because Chris Young is a superstar, or going to be a superstar Right? Just like Borchard or Crede. Right? Chris young could get hit by a car tommorrow. THe Sox should not pass up an opportunity to get an elite player while they are positioned for the post season. This guy will put us over the top and the lineup will scare opponents in the playoffs a hell of alot more than it does today. we need left handed bats against the Angels, Redsox and Yankees. Expecially the Angels, I don't think they have a left hander worth a damn in the bullpen. Make the trade now. Please The Borchard - to - Young comparison is absolutely terrible. Fine, you don't think minor leaguers are worth it. That's Ok, but don't make baseless comparisons.

New stadium plans for Oakland. The initial drawings for these always look cool to me... http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...m12.DTL&type=as

To tell the honest truth (at least, totally IMHO) -- and I don't know if this has been said yet -- but if she was a pro-Sox writer, everyone would be praising her. But, since the tables are turned -- since it's the "b**** Sox" rather than the "Twinkies" -- she's a bad writer. To some people. I find her hilarious and a very talented writer. But again -- that's just my opinion.

I normally wouldn't post this in here, but I figured more people would look at it in here. It's been slow, lately, now that the trade deadline is over, and I hope this will give some of you the same fun it gave me. Like I said, this gave me quite a good laugh on an overall crummy day (Grossman injury, Sox losing). This person compared all thirty teams to a different Simpsons character. And, like I said, several of them are very clever. If you have a few minutes, look through all of them. Here's the ones that I thought were the best (and here's the link, btw): And, what I thought was the best one: Very, very clever stuff.

Grossman's Season Basically Over

QUOTE(TheHammer @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 03:49 AM) Overreactors. For all anyone knows he is out 3 months and will only miss half the season. THe defense looks great and so does the pass pro, which is GREAT because Hutchinson is very solid if he has time to throw. I think Grossman is toast for this year. But, I do agree with you that the season isn't over. We're not really built on offense, anyways, it'll come down to our defense, which is no big surprise to anyone here. -
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 11:00 PM) Yeah...what he said. They friggin pull the bat back each and ever g'd time. You gotta time it right and just tap the button. I was having the same problem that you and Mike were having. It's hard. I still haven't done it very well, but I know how to do it -- I just suck at it. Plus, you KNOW that I imply Oakland rules to my team -- f*** bunting!

Grossman's Season Basically Over
CWSGuy406 replied to DukeNukeEm's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I feel terrible for Rex. Never miss a game in his high school career, samething in his college career. And then he gets to the NFL. Tries to break his fall in the Chiefs game, strains/breaks a finger. Scrambles in the Metradome, foot gets caught in the turf, season over. Gets taken down in a wierd way the next year, season over. f***ing s***. -

QUOTE(DukeNukeEm @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 02:29 AM) Benson may need to get 30 and Jones may need 20. And htats game by game. In order for us to win we will ahve to lead the NFL Rushing. We will lead the league in carries though, I can guaruntee that. It's all gonna come down to the O-Line. If we have a great one, I don't think it's gonna make a HUGE difference if it's Orton/Grossman in the backfield, 'cause both of 'em can make passes when they have time. BUt damnit. This sucks. -

Benson needs to sign, and quick. We just went from a closer-to-half-and-half pass/run team, to a run heavy, pass less team. We're going to need 40-50 carries PER GAME from our HBs, and it'd be nice to run Jones for 20, Benson for 20, and even Peterson for some. -

Interesting... Mike Brown: "This field sucks. It's coming up all over the place. I didn't see the injury, but I bet his foot got stuck in the turf. THe field turf is supposed to be even, but it's coming up at spots." f***ing field turf. -
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 11:23 PM) No I think Iguchi will do well today. He seems to do well against guys that don't have a lot of bite. Wells' curve is a big lollipop, but I think Tad can stay with it and go the other way with it.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 01:39 AM) Actually, I'd say it's easier to find average to good starters than it is to find great relievers. Neal has an ERA of 2.08 right now. Do you think he'd have an ERA that low as a starter? In the AL if he did, he'd win the Cy Young award. In other words...numbers as a reliever probably don't translate too well to starting. Hitters face you more than once, you get more tired, etc. Neal Cotts can be a great left-handed relief pitcher. But I don't think he can be a great left-handed starter. He might be able to be a good left-handed starter (ERA ~ 4) but I don't think he could be a great one. So what? Even a GREAT reliever only impacts at most what, 80 innings of a season? A starter, OTOH pitches at least double that of a reliever. Like Jordan said, you're limiting his ceiling by putting him in the reliever spot. We tried Cotts as a starter when his mechanics were off and he wasn't his normal self. Now he is -- he's back to his high K, semi high BB self. If he fails, you can always fall back on him being a good reliever, but you're limiting his potential by keeping him in the 'pen.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 01:18 AM) If we can't beat Oakland in a playoff series...do we deserve to win the World Series? But who would you rather face? Oakland or Anahiem? Zito/Harden/Haren or Colon/Lackey/Bird-Washburn?

Chicago Blackhawks Offseason Bonanza Thread
CWSGuy406 replied to CWSGuy406's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
A little bit of news today... Joe Thorton inks a three-year deal with the Bruins. Lindros signs a one-year deal with the Laughs. There were more names, but I didn't catch 'em. -
I was just about to post a thread on it, but rather just posted in the ATM pinned thread up top. The A's are in first. That's amazing (no pun intended). They were down 4-0, too, and Payton homered for a solo shot (he's been awesome), and then Chavez had a two out, three run blast. I can't wait to hear Bill Platschke talk about the A's. "Blah blah blah blah no heart, blah blah blah worse manager, blah blah blah no Steve Finley like 'proven winner'."
-
Did anyone just see how the A's/Angels game just ended? It was the bottom of the ninth, with runners on second and third, with two outs. 4-4. Rodriguez threw a backdoor slider, 0-0, and it was called a ball. Rodriguez clearly wasn't happy with the call. Anyways -- Molina throws back to the pitcher, Rodriguez drops it, Kendall comes home and scores. The A's are in first.
