Today is the day--8/21/05 Game Thread
CWSGuy406 replied to flyg88182's topic in 2005 Season in Review
QUOTE(Whitesoxfan56 @ Aug 21, 2005 -> 07:01 PM) no that .224 average would make him the 2nd worst hitter in the starting lineup for august, behind crede. do some research before you try and prove me wrong Uribe's .291 OBP in August is better than other #1/#2 whole candidates, such as Rowand (.260), Iguchi (.288), Ozuna (.167), and Perez (.243). -
Quick offensive help? Trade Timo Perez and Pablo Ozuna to Charlotte for Ross Gload, and pick up Mark Bellhorn. I doubt it happens, but I'm really hoping the Sox grab Bellhorn.

Hope you have a great one, Tony!

GRRRRINDERBALL v. Yankees 8/20/05 Game Thread!

QUOTE(3E8 @ Aug 21, 2005 -> 01:12 AM) How about we just call for a bunt and put two men in scoring position with one out. I agree. I'd actually like to see them try and hit-and-run a little bit when Uribe is at the dish and there's a runner on first. Uribe seems like a guy who when he actually needs to concentrate and put the ball in play, he does it. It was pretty inexcusible for Timo to swing there, however. That right there seemed like a real downer. You know, they're talking about Junior now on BBTN. I really hope the Sox are offering a big pitching package for him -- or, at least, as good of a pitching package that they can do without using guys on the 40-man. Did they say that a PTBNL can't be on the 40-man? -
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 09:54 PM) I dunno, depends how you look at it. We are playing like the worst team in baseball this past week and we are still 9 up. Ten up in the loss column, too. Like you said, it all depends if you're a "glass half full" guy, or "glass half empty". I'm pissed about how their playing, yet I hope that our offense can't be this bad...

Jim, with all due respect, he did hit .321 last year in a sizeable amount of at-bats. That's not to say he'd do the same this year, but he would be the best bat (by far) off the bench, and the way we're hitting right now (or, for that matter, not hitting), I see no reason for him to be at Charlotte.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 08:33 PM) It's eerily similar to the collapse of the Orioles earlier. They were looking great, then they choked out of nowhere. Welcome to another White Sox season, Chicago. Build up your hopes and spit in your face. Then stop watching, if you already know the outcome. Do us all a favor. -

QUOTE(JimH @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 08:24 PM) Agree on all counts Keith. There is no sugar coating this, they are in their worst stretch of the year by far and they need a jolt to come out of it. They should really consider a personnel move, even if it's just shuffling the deck. I've suggested Mark Bellhorn, but he's really just the player that, IMO, Ozzie will think of as Geoff Blum too. But, at least Bellhorn can hit better than Crede and Blum. He was bad earlier in the year, but he still has a .328 OBP, and last year, put up something like an .800 OPS with Boston, IIRC. But, like I said -- he's basically Geoff Blum too except with a little more offense. I had a dream that we traded Anderson and Tracey (or someone else) for Griffey. I was so happy. Then I woke up... :banghead -

Jim, there is good news... The sun will rise in the morning. But seriously, this sucks. -
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 03:56 AM) If anyone could possibly hit a HR with these, he's our man. Frank needs to be the Sox' Kirk Gibson for the rest of the year..... Frank's .590 SLG% proved to be real cancerous to the team, huh?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 03:29 AM) Where would he play? Seriously, he has no spot to play. Also, I think he might be a product of the product, if you know what I mean? Meh -- we wouldn't get him because of his power. He's hitting .216 yet has an OBP of .328. I'd take that over anything Ozuna or Timo brings to the table... He's basically a better version of Geoff Blum. Worse defensively, better offensively.
-
I'd like to see the Sox pick him up. He's had a poor year this season, but he's a career .755 OPS, and is currently playing well below that. Plus, he's no stranger to a walk -- despite a .216 BA, he's got a .328 OBP. At the very least, he's a "proven winner" and gotsss the ringzz (or ring) to prove it.

I think I'm going to email Hawk tomorrow, and ask him, "Where Would He Play?". Damn, I gotta cash in on this. WWHP bracelets will be out before ya know it... It'll be like "What Would Jesus Do?", except, in baseball terms. We'll make millions. License plates, t-shirts, EVERYTHING!!! -

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 02:58 AM) We are playing bad against playoff teams and this does not look good for postseason We couldn't beat Tampa Bay right now, much less the Yankees or Boston. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 02:56 AM) I think they mean more like the similarities between how the teams were playing. Nationals won a ton of very close, low scoring games. Once they stopped winning every close game, their record went to s***. Their Pythag was always even. IIRC, we're like 80+. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 01:12 AM) At least Womack has the ability to lay down a bunt or get the runner over. Crede has been a disaster at trying to advance runners this season. Okay, no need to even argue a point with you anymore. Womack has something like a .540 OPS, and is making about five times what Crede makes. Like I said, I'm done talking about the topic with you, because saying you'd rather have Womack is plain stupidity. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 12:58 AM) Not at all. When Crede is struggling, no one puts a worse AB together than Crede. Some guys might be struggling, but at least they'll make the pitcher works. Crede would rather just pop up the first pitch weakly on the infield than to actually be a tough out. LOL, Ok. He's not good offensively, but you're grossly exagerating worst in the league. Afterall, we're playing a team that plays Tony Womack pretty regularly. But I do agree with you about 'Hawk. Seems like he's trying to convince himself, not us. I'd listen to Rooney and Farmer, but I watch all/most games on HDTV, and it's a good six seconds behind the radio. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 12:46 AM) Not only that, but when he's struggling, he is the easiest out in the AL. Our left side of the infield is just a disgrace at the plate. Exaggerate much? -

No idea... Why was Dye swinging 2-0? -
QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Aug 19, 2005 -> 11:48 PM) I could see this point if it were June or July, but don't you think he's gotten in the work he needs and should start seeing some ML hitters? That and the fact that he seems to have worked out the arm angle problem. He'll probably be up here once Charlotte season ends... assuming it ends sometime in September.

Don't worry, guys, at least we have a quality backup hitter in Ross Gload who was able to put up a 115 OPS+ last season. Real nice to have that type of bat off the bench, huh? Oh, wait... -
I never know which stance to take on Jones, but I'm going to side with DBaho. He really isn't that great of halfback. In fact, The Football Outsiders has him ranked in the bottom third of the league for running backs.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 18, 2005 -> 02:44 PM) Kalapse brought up a good team in the O's though as well. There'll be a market for Paulie this off-season, don't you worry about that. And, so long as the Sox play their cards right, we should get the better end of the stick. Hopefully, two nice and high compensation draft picks...

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 18, 2005 -> 06:57 AM) I was gonna ask something about Helton on a different note. He's having a good year and all but wtf happend to his power? I have no idea -- people will point to steroids, but I really don't like doing that. I brought up Helton's name because over at John Sickel's blog, they were talking about the Rockies, and how to fix them. I'd love to grow up and be the Rockies GM (after, of course, having proper training). It would be so cool to see that team succeed, just, 'cause the circumstances in which they play half of their games under.
-
Any chance that Todd Helton cleared waivers or was placed on waivers?
