QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 03:08 AM) I clearified my statement about 3 posts later. Along with clearifying it, you also clarified it. So that's good... I'm sorry, I had to...

I'm happy that Benson finally signed, but I hope that Adrian Peterson isn't just thrown to the side now. He's proven himself a capable back, and I hope he gets on the field for a decent amount of time during the season. Obviously, not as many touches as Jones or Benson, but still should get five-ten, IMO.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 28, 2005 -> 07:34 PM) How do you figure Because, he's a rookie and if you're a rookie, it excludes you from doing anything special. Or, at least that's the way it almost sounds around here. He'll have his growing pains, he'll have his problems, but he's the best QB on the roster. I know we've been asking for this for years, but we don't need Orton to have a Ben Rothlisburger (sp?) type season. Hell, give me Chad Pennington version 2002-lite. Low INT totals, and I don't even need a guy who's going to make big throws. But, don't turn the damn ball over -- that's all we need, IMO. I don't think that will get us a championship, but it'll give us a fighting chance for every game with our defense...

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 28, 2005 -> 03:34 AM) Haha, yes. I still want to know how the big picture is effected by letting Duque pitch into the 8th inning? He was at less than 95 pitches, IIRC... -

3E8, I sort of know what you're saying. I'm half-drunk right now, so I don't know if I can tell what it is, but I sort of see something different... -
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 27, 2005 -> 06:06 PM) Idonno he is a good fielder he just get lazies at time that was one of the pirates complaints vs him. I guess playing on the yankees and in a playoff race he might not be so lazy. No, he's an awful fielder. Something like second to last in the NL this year in ZR, and on average, 19 runs below the average OF'er per UZR. There's no getting around it, and putting him in CF would be about as dumb as us putting someone like Carl Everett in CF. Probably worse.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Aug 27, 2005 -> 04:48 PM) FWIW, Lawton is a UFA after this season. So, I don't think we can really call it a move for the future. But, I think the Yankees are much improved with Lawton in CF than a Womack-Williams tandum down the stretch. You do realize that Lawton is one of the worst defensive left-fielders in the game, much less a CF'er? It's okay if they stick him in LF, and put Matsui in CF. But putting Lawton in CF would be a downright terrible move for the Yankees...

Can anyone answer this for me -- is there a downside to bringing up a bunch of players, say, closer to ten rather than only like three guys? The way I see it, the following guys, it can be argued, deserve a shot to help the team in September... Jamie Burke - He produced in his time last year, and he's decently at Charlotte. He'd just give Ozzie more flexibility w/r/t pinch running for the catcher late in a game. Only problem is that he isn't on the 40-man. Willie Harris - He's still the best defensive secondbaseman we have, and he's damn good at stealing bases, too. Ross Gload - I'll keep this short. He should be up on the team now, and it's a damn shame that he isn't. He's got something like an 1.100 OPS at Charlotte. There's no reason that he shouldn't be on the playoff roster. Brandon McCarthy - Dominant second half, spot starter/swingman. Jeff Baj - Dominating again at Charlotte, clearly better than his competition. Felix Diaz/Arnie Munoz - Moreso Munoz, 'cause he's lefty and he's doing much better this season, but both could be swingmen type, innings eaters in blowouts. And, unlike Jon Adkins, they've both had success in the past. I'm sure I'm missing someone. Borchard might get a shot. But -- is there a downside to having 32-35 guys on the roster rather than 28-29 that I'm not seeing...?

QUOTE(Sonik22 @ Aug 27, 2005 -> 03:55 AM) well there goes my jays. I'm rooting for the Jays. They're one big bat away from being a pretty good contendor. Their rotation of Halladay-Bush-Lilly-Chacin-McGowan isn't the best, but it's above average. But, they need that Carlos Delgado-like bat in the middle of their lineup...

QUOTE(SnB @ Aug 27, 2005 -> 05:09 AM) meh..... bears football doesn't excite me anymore. But Illini football does? I went to the game tonight -- or, the first half. I needed to see King Felix vs. King Orlando, so I only stayed for the bad half. Anyways -- Chad Hutchinson f***ing blows. I've always been in favor of Hutchinson, I thought he was decent. But my goodness, he's awful. He has absolutely NO pocket presence. I realize the O-line wasn't great, but it seems like he has zero peripheral vision. And, everything he does seem akward. His reads seem poor, his pass placement seems poor. Too bad I didn't get to see Orton, I'm not that mad. Sox won, but man... Hutchinson is the definition of 'teh suck'.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 27, 2005 -> 05:35 AM) Hermanson faced these same stretch of hitters two weeks ago. I'd like to see him go to Jenks...but I can understand using Hermanson though. If you don't use your closer, and he says he's healthy...that can cause problems for his confidence. I hate 'closers'... -

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 27, 2005 -> 04:31 AM) To me, it's not about Duque hanging a pitch. It has more to do with hitters seeing his delivery for another at-bat. Duque hangs a lot of pitches...it's part of his repetoire. Well, I didn't see many pitches 'hung' throughout the game. Just two -- but if that constitutes being 'part of his repetoire', then whatever... And, I wonder how he's got along all these years hanging so many pitches... -

QUOTE(SnB @ Aug 27, 2005 -> 04:29 AM) and was around 100 pitches. since when do we ever leave him out there that long? The whole season... 100 pitches is a lot when one is just starting an inning. But Orlando was finishing it. He hung a pitch, and got hit. It happens. -

What was the problem leaving Duque in for Bloomquist? He was cruising, and hung a pitch. It happens. Maybe shouldn't have left him in for Ibanez, but I see no reason why he shouldn't pitch to Bloom... -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 09:11 AM) Let's see. A good prospect who's a part time player on a contending club. . . . . . . Kevin Youkilis. Kevin Youkilis is 26 years old. That's a pretty big difference from someone like Brian Anderson, who's a top prospect in the White Sox organization. Rock Raines, you still haven't answered Randar in finding a team that brought up a top prospect and had him on the bench. Hell, Milwaukee called up Prince Fielder during interleague-play and immediately got him in the line-up. They also traded Junior Spivey just so they could find a spot to play Rickie Weeks. Minnesota? WTF are you smoking? They traded a catcher coming off an .824 OPS season to make room for their top prospect in Mauer. You don't sit a top prospect. If he's not going to be playing everyday, then send him back to AAA. And, if there isn't going to be an opening on the roster anytime soon, you trade him. IMO, Anderson will be traded, just because you can't have an OF of Podsednik - Rowand - Anderson, as it would be the weakest hitting OF in the majors (at least, for next season).

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 03:26 AM) Hmm....who will I let influence my perception.....what I see with my own eyes, or a statistical analysis? Like I said earlier, Bellhorn was so bad on defense that Red Sox fans used to cheer for a bencher to come in and replace him. Also, I'm not saying there's something wrong with striking out....but a lot of fans would get quite upset with Bellhorn's strikeout frequency. If anyone thinks Bellhorn is the same player this season as he was in the past, then I definitely disagree. Even if he's not... which is really stretching it, considering your basing this on 270 ABs or so -- what's wrong with what he'd bring? If used against lefties alone, he's better than anything we have. He's putting up a .234/.336/.394 line against lefties this year. That's pretty much the floor of the production you're going to get from him, and it's still better than anything else we'd have. In the gamethreads, I see you b**** about this team not having enough guys who get on base. A .330 OBP would rank what, third on our team right now? Fourth? If Crede is gone for the season, I don't see why they don't make this move.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 03:23 AM) Can I ask where all this Bellhorn talk came up, did I miss something? He was DFA'ed.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 03:08 AM) You think people dislike Crede now? Just wait until Bellhorn starts striking out at an alarming rate. And I don't care what other Boston fans say....I've seen Bellhorn play plenty to make a judgment on his defense. Hmm... what to trust... defensive statistic like UZR, or fathom's eyes. Tough call.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 12:52 AM) Exactly....and Bellhorn is just not a good 3rd baseman. You're not going to find a good defensive thirdbaseman out there. So, you're gonna need to find a guy who can hit. Bellhorn can hit -- well, he can walk. And, over his career, he's both hit and walked well against lefties. Late in games, he can be replaced by Blum. You keep saying he's bad defensively, yet there are Boston fans -- primarily many over at BTF -- who say he's average, even slightly above. Now, at third, that'll change, and he'd probably be a little bit below average, accounting for longer throws, etc, but he's certainly not as bad as you make him out to be...
-
If Crede is out for an extended period of time... i.e. for the season... I suggest Mark Bellhorn. He has a career .830 OPS vs lefties -- a .260/.351/.478 line. Platoon him with Blum. And Ozuna remains in his super-utility role. This, of course, if Crede is out for the season -- which I assume a broken finger would do.
