  1. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 05:26 PM) Even with Kubel out they still have Stewart, Ford, Jones, and Restovich to play the outfield. Ford played 46 games in CF last year for the Twins and the Metrodome has an extremely easy CF. Obviously, Gardenhire has no problem playing Ford in CF. Ford is not a guy who can give a team 150+ games in CF, but that's JMHO as an observer... I doubt this message board trade rumor ends up happening.
  2. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 05:39 PM) Enrique Wilson is more tragic than average. I can't for the life of me understand why you'd take a player who's definitely awful over an unknown commodity like Valdez. How much worse can Valdez possibly be than Wilson's .210/.257/.329 over the last few years? I would expect Iguchi to have at least as many growing pains as a rookie. If they sign him, it should be for talent reasons, not experience. I also hope that, contrary to popular belief, the Sox keep Harris if they sign Iguchi. A lot of people (I won't mention names) think that Iguchi is an absolute lock to hit .280 with about 15-20 homers, 60+ RBIs -- when in all reality, he could flop and be worse than Harris was last season. Other than his last two years, Iguchi has been extrememly inconsistent. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, and I definitely am for the Sox getting Iguchi -- however, don't think that he won't have his struggles, because he will...
  3. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 12:45 AM) From the poker face KW gave at Soxfest, I figured we were close to something with Iguchi. Hopefully the Sox will be able to announce his signing in the coming days. Is it just me, or is Kenny pretty bad at keeping his poker face straight? Right when we (meaning the crowd @ Soxfest) asked him about Iguchi, he started laughing a bit to himself. He gave the company line answer, but you know/knew that he was going hard after him...
  4. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 12:02 AM) Aren't you the same guy from California that came up with all those Giants rumors? Durham, Nen!? ...cause, I think you are. EDIT: You also posted this a while back... I just heard Mel Antonnen from USA Today on sporting news radio on Sirius that the Sox offer Iguchi a 3year 9-10M deal.. I dont know if this mean we are going to sign him Fishy. Lay off a bit, Addy. He's probably just posting what he's hearing, nothin' wrong with that. And, it's most likely that the Durham rumor was true -- just because Durham isn't on the Sox now, doesn't mean that things weren't talked about. Like Jim/Steff always say, these deals are always talked about. Rarely do they come to fruition, but I always like when people post the stuff they hear (as long as the people have a good track record, and, IMHO, Winnin Ugly hasn't shown anything that shows he's a liar). Nothing wrong with that, but that's JMHO.
  5. Even if Iguchi fails to totally pan out, a move like this could reap its benefits by broadening our fanbase, as well as give us the inside track (by signing to former-Japanase players in a row in Shingo and Iguchi) to the stud 24 year-old next winter. Also, at the very least, Iguchi should be able to hit left-handed pitchers well enough to platoon with Harris -- if, like I said, the very worst happens... If we do, however, get the Iguchi of the past two seasons, then we have an awesome two-hole hitter, and a potential leadoff hitter incase Podsednik flops...
  6. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 05:39 PM) You do realize that fielding on turf is tougher than fielding on grass, right? What are you talking about? Field turf may play faster, but in no way is it tougher than grass. Grass gives you all types of odd hops all of the time, meanwhile, turf is fast and, for the most part, straight. Wasn't Kaz Matsui a defensive-wiz back in Japan? He sure didn't look like one in the majors, though... Don't expect a defensive upgrade from Harris to Iguchi. No doubt, I'll take Harris any day of the week over Iguchi defensively, and I haven't even seen Iguchi play. Let's just hope that he can make up for that with his stick... EDIT: And Addison, I agree with you that Roger Bossard is a sod genious -- however, you have to agree with me that one is going to have to play more odd hops on grass than he will on turf, correct? Turf will play faster, making ones range factor seem worse -- but it won't give you those hops that hit a stone, or the cuff of the IF grass...
  7. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 04:16 AM) You're right, I forgot my manners. Next time someone asks me if I want any hockey, I'll say what my mom always told me to say; "No thank you." Jesus people, quit taking this so personal. Sorry, us hockey folks aren't too happy at this time -- didn't mean to come off as an ass. We've had our bumps as of late, but I still hope we're cool? Anyways, when you hear ESPN, and every other sports station, and every radio station, tell you (just about) everyday about the hockey lockout, and how someone always manages to get that one sneaky remark in ("You mean they haven't been playing? Wow, where have I been ..."), it gets a bit aggravating. Hockey is a great sport, it's unfortunate that we have two sides that are greedy and don't have a clue what the words "give-and-take" mean...
  8. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 03:26 AM) Kenny, this is a baseball board (Yes I realize this the "other" Sports section.) How many more "I miss Hockey" pity threads do we need? Didn't Carolina's owner basically say the season is over and they will be offering refunds soon? How many have there been? Five, at most? Like Krush said, if you don't like it, fine -- but can't you guys just stay out of the thread, rather than the one liners of "Hockey sucks", "I don't like hockey, so it's ok with me". Fine, you don't like hockey. Then don't even look into a thread labled "Hockey, Anyone"?
  9. QUOTE(BlizzardOfOzzie @ Jan 20, 2005 -> 11:02 PM) Come on! Jay Mariotti, Rick Telander, and all of those sports writers are NOT fans of either team. If they are, it's anyone's guess. Not sure about the others, but Mariotti grew up and is from Philadelphia. Why would he give two s***s about either team, or any Chicago team for that matter? His job is to be objective and provide viewpoints as he sees things without bias. I love reading his column every day. He tells things like it is and if it pisses people off, f*** 'em. He doesn't need to give a s***. I don't like when he disses the Sox, but he's just telling it like he sees it. So what? It doesn't influence whether I love the Sox or not. Besides, I'm also a life-long, die-hard Packer fan and I LOVE his columns about the Bears. Pure reading enjoyment for me. f*** the Packers, and f*** Jay Mariotti. Mariotti knows jack s*** about everything and anything he writes about. He knows nothing about hockey, yet writes about it today in his column. He's a f***ing moron, a stooge. It will be a glorious day when he's no longer in this damn city... //My rant of the week.
  10. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jan 20, 2005 -> 05:16 PM) I'm pretty sure that he's a Flubs fan. Rogers seems like a pro-Sox, pro-Cubs guy -- a Chicago guy. I'm not really fond of when he brings up certain rumors, but I definitely like his analysis. He seems to be pretty objective in most of his columns, I for one am a fan of his.
  11. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 04:19 AM) Johnson is going too low in mock drafts b/c people don't see a fit, and they don't like guessing at trades. But I agree, even w/o a good fit he'll go higher. I know a lot of people would think I'm crazy, but I'd definitely look at grabbing Johnson at the fourth pick. People are talking Ray Lewis good with this kid -- I haven't watched him play enough, so I can't comment on that. But if that comparison is true, or even somewhat true -- wow... Briggs-Urlacher-Johnson, with Harris-Ogunlye-Brown up front -- I don't think anyone except the Pats could even touch that as far as a front seven...
  12. QUOTE(chisox05 @ Jan 20, 2005 -> 09:58 PM) It will be...... Shingo Marte Luis Dustin Cliff Neal Jon The best would be....... CL-TAKATSU SET-MARTE SET-MUNOZ MID-VIZCAINO MID-BAJERANU MID-COTTS(Long incase of a contreras f***up) MID-POLITTE SO difference is. ADD munoz,JBaj. Drop Dustin,Adkins. Hermanson is horrible, KW is a liar(we targeted him 3 years!),he will suck especially in the AL, Adkins is small minded, he cant come in in the clutch, in order to pitch, there has to be a 5+ run differential in the 4th-6th innings. Anyways, I want to make my point on hermanson and that KW lied. We couldve gotten him under a million dollars(which i still would be pissed about but w/e). Now we have him at almost SIX MILLION for 2 years, a guy who will be a RELIEVER! OSUNA WENT FOR 800,000!-AND HES BETTER! Now, IM gonna get s*** like "Hermanson has the ability to close" or "Emergency 5th starter". Well hed be horrible in any position he is placed in. Sorry, I started laughing when I saw "Munoz" as a setup guy... Maybe in '06, because I do remember some rave reviews as to his stuff as a reliever, but you definitely won't be getting your wish anytime this season... BTW -- were you in on the Hermanson negotiations, or are you his agent, knowing that he could have been had @ Anyways, assuming we break camp with 11 pitchers, and Thomas on the DL, is this what we can expect our team to look like? SPs: Buehrle, Garcia, Hernandez, Contreras, Garland MRs: Shingo, Marte, Hermy, Vizcaino, Politte, Cotts IFs: Pierz, Burke, Davis, Gload, Konerko, Harris, Crede, Uribe, Valdez/Ozuna(sp?) OF's: Everett, Podsednik, Perez, Rowand, Dye I honestly believe that this is what our team will look like, provided that there's no move at 2B (which there could definitely still be). It looks like the Sox like Cotts a whole lot, and want him to be the second lefty in the 'pen. It will be, IMHO, Valdez/Ozuna fighting for that last spot -- unless Diaz/Munoz/Baj/Adkins/Walker/Grilli absolutely wow the pants off of Ozzie and Kenny at Tuscon...
  13. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 20, 2005 -> 07:31 PM) WH v LH: Not enough to go on? 2001 2ab .000 .000 .000 .000 2002 38ab .237A .293O .237 .530 2003 19ab .105A .150O .105 .255 2004 72ab .181A .224O .264 .488 Juggernaut -- do you even read what other people post, or do you just respond aimlessly with a variety of stats? Hayes said that judging a guy on less than 200 AB's in a certain category is pointless, because it's too much of a sample size. Let me see here -- 2 + 38 + 19 + 72 = 131, correct? I mean, come on... Sorry if I sound like an ass, but it's kind of like Hayes is going around in circles with you...
  14. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jan 20, 2005 -> 09:19 PM) You're way late... http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28895 So what? He posted it again. Obviously he wasn't the only one who missed it, as there were zero replies to yours...
  15. QUOTE(BamaDoc @ Jan 20, 2005 -> 03:41 AM) If he wins utility job does he bat left or right handed? Could spell Willie vs lefties? Anyone know the answer to this? I'm curious about this as well...
  16. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 20, 2005 -> 03:17 AM) Even if it proves he can't hit lefties for his life, you face so many more rhp that a .360 obp against righties will be valuable. Especially considering that the .360 OBP will be coming from the nine spot in the order...
  17. Back to the Williamson signing... Is there an option year for 2006? If there isn't, then wow... That's pretty stupid, IMHO.
  18. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 20, 2005 -> 12:24 AM) I'll say 10-14 wins, 180-205 IP, 4.40-5.00 ERA for 2005. OK - well, we're still basically on the same page. It's just that I have him pegged to (potentially) being able to win 16 (not a lock -- potentially), as well as having a little bit better potential ERA, but we're still in the same ballpark. We agree though, that Garland is not the ace he was once supposed to be, but that he can be a pretty solid three/four. Yes?
  19. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 10:30 PM) Quit looking at his age and look at the number of years he has been in the bigs. Obviously some people in the White Sox organization (from 2002-2004) viewed Garland as highly as some of you here. He has been handed the #3 spot for 3 consecutive years, and hasn't improved, yet some of you still think he's going to win 20 games and should be ahead of Contreras and Hernandez. I used to be a fan of Garland's, but he has a crappy attitude, and has shown no signs of improvement. But shouldn't we congratulate him on his first winning season? Again, I ask the question that you leave unanswered... Who's fault is it for handing him the number three spot three consecutive years in a row -- a point that me and you both agree on, a spot in which Jon was/still is incapable of handling? And, FWIW, I'm not one of the guys who thinks that Jon is going to be a 20 game winner. Sure, there's the hope, but I'm not banking on it -- I'll bank on 12-16 wins, 200 innings, and an ERA that can be as good as 4.30ish, or at worst 5.00. I also think he deserves what he gets, and he's a pretty good bargain considering what some others got (if someone thinks that Kris Benson is what, five million dollars per year better than Jon Garland, I got news for ya...).
  20. I really, really like this quote from Guillen: I honestly cannot believe that Guillen dislikes Harris that much. Guillen probably sees a lot of talent in the kid, a lot of speed, a good ability at the plate, and he's hard on him to get him to his potential. Addison, I know you hate on Harris a lot, but Harris can be a top flight leadoff hitter if he works hard enough -- which is, like I said above, probably why you always hear Guillen ragging on him. Harris is a lot like Jon Garland -- they're doing alright now, but both are capable of much bigger things than what they've done so far...
  21. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 05:39 AM) I'm only judging Contreras from how he played with the Sox. So in 2004 both Garland and Contreras had 9 s***ty outings. How does that favor Garland? And if Garland didn't have a s***ty outing, he would go 6 IP, 4 ER, which isn't bad for a 5th starter, but isn't good for a guy who has been handed the #3 spot in the rotation for 3 consecutive years. And who's fault is that, Santo? Is it Jon's fault that he's isn't quite ready to be a number three starter at this point in his career? In most rotations, I want my number five starter to give me a lot of innings, and to keep me in most of the games he pitches in. I count two games where Jon really didn't give us a chance to win (vs. Philly, 10 R, vs. Detroit, 7 Runs), about five-six starts where he pitched poorly, but, the game still could have been won, as he was still able to give us 5-7 innings (5-6 runs), and the rest were starts in which he pitched pretty well for a fifth starter (4 R or less). So, basically you're blaming Jon for not being capable of being a third starter at the age of 24...
  22. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 04:05 AM) I say Garland is the number 5, and Contreras is #4 but I would start Contreras on the 3rd game of the season because of how well he pitched against the Indians last season, and Orlando "Big Game pitcher" Hernandez should start the first game of the Twins series. Good post, agree with all of it. I don't really care who our starters are past three, four, and five. I don't really mean it like that, but Buehrle-Garcia are our obvious one and two's, but after that, it's really a tossup, IMHO. This team should try to protect El Duque, meaning, he shouldn't be an innings eater. We have a good enough bullpen to where, if El Duque can give us five-six strong innings, we'll be in good shape. As for Contreras, we all know how good he can be when he's on. If he finally pitches like he can for a whole season, he's going to be the best number three/four starter in the league, he'll give us a lot of innings, and he'll be really, really dominant. That's if he pitches to his potential.
  23. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Jan 18, 2005 -> 11:02 PM) You bet your ass there will be. I'll bring chairs, Steve will bring chairs, Keith will bring "cornhole" I knew that one was coming...
  24. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 03:50 AM) Well f***, he's been the MLB since 2000, and last year was his first winning season?!?!?! What happened to all that potential he supposedly had? OK - so he's not the staff horse, the ace, the twenty game winner we all had hoped for. But he's still a solid starter. He gives us innings, and quality ones at that. He'll give at worst a five ERA, most likely closer to the 4.75 ERA. And, for the most part, he'll keep you in the games he pitches in. Maturity comes with age. I don't care if he's been in the league since 2000, he's still only 25. If every person was asked to be at the top of their game -- be it a major league pitcher or a doctor, hell, any job -- at the age of 25, I really doubt many would succeed.
  25. QUOTE(LDF @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 12:56 AM) the best reliever in the AL, are you kidding me .................. and what happens if he doesn't. I don't know many guys who, if they had a 3.42 ERA over the course of 73+ innings, would be considered bad...
