  1. QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 8, 2005 -> 03:40 PM) ANd if Mags puts up numbers like he has in the past.. who is the dumb one? Oh come on Anthrax, quit playing these f***ing games. Even you know a healthy Maggs isn't worth 15 million, much less a Maggs with a gimp and degenerative knee. You may disagree with Maggs replacement, but surely even you can see that not having Maggs on the books for the next couple of seasons, especially with that knee, is a good thing.
  2. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 4, 2005 -> 06:37 PM) So how is that useful? Usually having a man on base is 'useful' to an offense.
  3. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 06:41 PM) I dont know why people are so fixated by homeruns. I know they are exciting and everything but the last 4 seasons we've had boppers up and down the lineup, led or nearly led the leauge in HR's and won nothing better than a tee time in Florida in October. I for one welcome a transition from a musclehead lineup to one that has a little more speed and singles/doubles. Hitting so many homeruns weren't the problem. Hitting so many solo homeruns were the problem. Homers aren't a bad thing. It's just, when men are on base, it's a lot more productive for an offense.
  4. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 05:19 AM) I know, I know. Yeah, I don't even know why I brought it up. My bad for an attemped thread hijack...
  5. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 04:51 AM) And Carlos Lee was the best because he had zero errors last season. FWIW, Lee was in the top half of the AL in both ZR and RF. He wasn't a gold glover, nor will he ever be a gold glover, but he wasn't as bad a fielder as many called him...
  6. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 02:38 AM) This could actually ruin his career if he is dumb. If he tries to play through that pain, it will get worse and not better over time. Just what I was thinking... The Tiggies have one void in this contract. One. So, if Magglio makes it through this year, everything else becomes guaranteed (or at least up until the option years?)??? It could get real ugly if the two sides start pointing fingers at each other mid-season, meaning -- Maggs thinks he's OK to go on the knee, the Tigers want him on the DL -- it might get real, real messy...
  7. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 01:48 AM) Beltre has had exactly one season over .265 avg., over 80 rbi, .426 slugging, and over 23 HRs. Beltre signed for 5 years $64 million. Tell me Maggs is worth less than Beltre. GMAB. Maggs averaged for 6 seasons over Beltre's one career year. With protections in place in case the Doctors here are right and he loses major time, something over $64 million is within the insanity that is baseball salaries. No one's defending the Beltre contract. Both are overpayment by two franchises that won't sniff the playoffs this year.
  8. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 12:02 AM) If Guerrero were a free agent this year, he would have got a lot more money then he did last. If the Detroit Tigers are willing to pay Magglio $15 million a year, he is worth $15 million. I think I read in Forbes that the Tigers franchise is worth more than the White Sox. The Detroit owner has to pay more to get players to come to Detroit. He is doing precisely what many on this board criticize Reinsdorf for not doing, and he is being called a jackass. Many thought the contract he gave Ivan Rodriquez was crazy. Its seems like a good deal so far. Maybe this one will to. I do know if Magglio is healthy, Detroit just picked up a player who is better than anyone currently on the White Sox roster. Considering all the problems the White Sox have had with Detroit the past few seasons, that presents some trouble for this upcoming season. True. Magglio is worth whatever the Tigers are willing to pay him. And sitting here as a Sox fan, I'm damn glad that three years down the road, they'll be hamstrung by yet another ridiculous OF contract (Higginson, anyone?), preventing them from signing much better FA's...
  9. QUOTE(CubKilla @ Feb 5, 2005 -> 11:39 PM) That type of logic goes completely against the thought process' of the "Little Reinsy's" on this board. Yep! Just throw money around everywhere, to anyone that asks for it! After all, the Mets have been so successful with that logic, correct?
  10. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 5, 2005 -> 11:55 PM) I don't think there is any, but the Tigers haven't really had anyone who you would expect to hit 30 even if they were playing in USCF, maybe with the exception of Juan Gonzalez. I'm pretty sure his back was acting up during his only season in Detroit, and they have moved the fences in significantly since then. Magglio got $75 million, Nomar got $8 million. If you were a player, who would you want negotiating your contract? I predict that Maggs doesn't hit 30+ homers once in the next five years with Detroit.
  11. QUOTE(danman31 @ Feb 5, 2005 -> 08:09 PM) Caruso is a bad comparison. His OPS for 98 isn't even all that good, .721. The point still stands that everyone here seems to be so confident in Podsednik, and he's had about one good season... And is a career .260 minor league hitter.
  12. QUOTE(Steff @ Feb 5, 2005 -> 01:59 PM) 309. I have a feeling they will either lower the price or offer single games to lessen the empty look. Or exchange with suit holders since it's about the same cost per person. Steff -- Do you plan on sitting there for any games this season? (Just wondering...) And -- they aren't offering single game tickets there? I'd be interested in sitting there for maybe a game, that seems like a really cool seat...
  13. QUOTE(Chisoxmatt @ Feb 5, 2005 -> 08:32 PM) IMO, no one is worth 15 million. I'd say that there are some guys, but a select few... Magglio will never be a bargain at 15 million, even if he returns to his old self. He's had one *exceptional* season, that being 2002. He put up some really good numbers, but not numbers of a guy who's going to make 15 million a season. Never put up a .1000+ OPS, either. So wait -- he's going from a hitters park to a pitchers park, he'll be making 15 million till he's 35 -- he's never had a .1000+ OPS, yet he's a bargain at 15 million? Who are you kidding? Even if Magglio had no question marks going into next season, I still wouldn't give him 15 million. He doesn't deserve it. When he puts up Vlad numbers, year in, year out, then he deserves it. Until then...
  14. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 5, 2005 -> 06:06 PM) A decade of losing and not bringing back free agents. Good scouting and overall, a better development staff in the minors probably helps them out, too...
  15. Even a healthy Maggs isn't worth 15 million per...
  16. Steff, how's the left field "FUNDAMENTALS" area looking? Any progress yet as far as the building of the mini-baseball field?
  17. QUOTE(YoungstownIndians @ Feb 5, 2005 -> 12:30 AM) Geeze you guys are bias. I have talked with 3 ppl privately from here who agree! Are you serious? Are you a f***ing moron? I'm sorry, but look at the name of the website. It's Soxtalk -- what the f*** do you expect? f***ing mercy...
  18. QUOTE(WSFAN35 @ Feb 4, 2005 -> 07:25 PM) I didn't say that Nomar was better than Uribe defensively. I said they were equal, which was a mistake on my part. Timo doesn't suck defensively, he's sloppy, but he makes plays. He 'makes plays' because he gets bad reads on the ball, and has absolutely no range, meaning he needs to make up for it by diving for the ball. But, I'm not going to convince you, nor vice versa -- so agree to disagree. At least we can agree that Uribe is the better defensive shortstop...
  19. Nomar is nowhere near the defensive shortstop Uribe is. Uribe has much better range, and a much, much better arm... Nomar obviously with the edge on offense, but there's no way you can say that Nomar is better than Uribe defensively. And, responding to another thread -- Timo sucks defensively. His only plus is his strong arm. That's it.
  20. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 04:56 AM) Best news I've heard in a while Jason -- Twelve more days... Unfortunately, it will last an eternity, but just twelve more days.
  21. Personally, what I want is a resolution that lasts for a long time, so us hockey fans never have to endure this long of a time without hockey, ever again. Whether that takes twelve hours of talking tomorrow, or whether it takes five more months -- just get a deal in place that is sound, and one that won't break down when a new CBA is to be put in place years later. As far as us hockey fans, specifically the small contingent of Blackhawk fans that are here -- I think that this is such damper to us because finally, this organization was actually going in the right direction. I know that's hard to fathom, even for the casual hockey fan, but it's true. Finally, rather than kid theirselves, kid the city, that they could squeak into the eighth spot in the playoffs and get their asses kicked in the first round, they sold off all the vets, got some good value for them, and started from scratch. I don't agree with what Wirtz has done for however long he's owned the team, but finally, we have a good core of young players -- on the team, in the system -- that we can actually build a team around. It's dissappoinging to think this might throw a wrench into the rebuilding plans.
  22. QUOTE(YoungstownIndians @ Feb 4, 2005 -> 12:42 AM) Yeah I think we can all say we fell shaky when our pens come into play. Our rotations are really solid. Its just the matter of the offense and pen. You guys got the edge on pitching. We got the edge on hittin. That makes it so tough to decide!!!! and to witesoxfan or w/e... 260:-39 ISN'T A SCIENTIFIC POLL! If Buehrle goes seven innings, and the score is 3-2 White Sox -- and Ozzie has a choice of Vizcaino, Hermanson, and Marte for the eighth -- with a fresh Shingo in the ninth, you won't see a lot of nervousness from me. I haven't been as confident as I am in this bullpen since we had Gordon/Marte -- and even this bullpen is much, much deeper than that one...
  23. Rotoworld Link Not surprising. Another publication that likes Chris Young, a lot. Gio Gonzalez is also, slowly climbing the ladder as far as White Sox prospects, too. One more stellar season from Gio, and he'll be on everybody's radar. Don't have time to look over the other teams right now, I'm in a hurry...
  24. Hmm... Underaged person in a bar (by five years, actually). Where does that ring a bell?
  25. QUOTE(TheDybber @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 07:56 PM) The Sox blew it when the built new Comiskey. It should've been where the old McCormick place is. Right on the water and open to the city. But, it is where it is and Addison, while a nice town would be hard for city folk to get to. Truth be told, I think that if the Sox were consistently winning, our fans would travel to friggin' Champaign to see the Sox (OK -- I'm going overboard a lot, but you get the point). My only real problem with the stadium is that the outfield backdrop doesn't face the Chicago skyline. It'd be a much more appealing upper deck seat, IMHO, if you'd see the Comisky firework scoreboard, and right behind it, the Sears tower and the rest of the Chicago skyline...
