  1. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Feb 22, 2005 -> 11:56 PM) Thats a pretty high ranking for a guy thats gonna be 25 in like half a month. I'm sure somebody can explain to me how Eric Duncan is a top 20 prospect and Ryan Sweeney doesn't even belong on the list. Its not like Sweeney was at the same level and putting up better numbers while being younger than Duncan is it? The only reason I can see Duncan being that high is because (I've heard -- never seen the kid play or followed exclusively) that he has some real good power potential. Also, I don't understand on Sweeney isn't on there, but Anderson is... I don't follow these lists -- so maybe someone who looks more often at BP can answer this -- but do they generally prefer college prospects over HS prospects?
  2. I just got home. How much were they down by?
  3. QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 22, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) I'm wondering if the final roster spot doesn't come down to Willie Harris vs. Jamie Burke. Of course, lots of things can happen in spring training and other opportunities arise. Even still ... 11 pitchers, 4 OF, Everett as the DH, 2 catchers, 2 1B, Iguchi, Uribe, Crede. That's 23. For the utility IF let's say Valdez for the sake of discussion. That's 24. So for now it appears to come down to Harris or Burke. If Ozzie carries 12 pitchers both Harris and Burke are on the outside looking in. But I doubt he carries more than 11 arms. The advantage to Harris is he is a safety net for Iguchi, without the utility IF having to step in at 2B. Harris also plays CF and adds speed. The advantage to Burke is he can play 3B, catch, play 1B, and arguably the corner OF spots. He hits right and they need a RH hitter off the bench. There are two keys ... one, does Harris have minor league options left? Two, can either Ozuna or Valdez play 3B? The other issue ... when Thomas comes back the 25th guy gets bumped, and Burke appears to be a guy who they can get through waivers pretty easily. Barring a trade and based on what Ozzie said today about the utility guy needing to play SS, I can definitely see the last spot coming down to Harris or Burke. Maybe it's just me, but I'm getting the feeling more and more that Willie is here to stay -- for now, at least. I think Ozzie likes the fact that he still has a pretty solid replacement incase Iguchi or Podsednik falters, and you know Ozzie will use Harris late in the games to steal a base. As much as everyone here would love for this to happen, I get the feeling 2nd base isn't going to be handed to Iguchi. But who knows...
  4. Anyone have any idea as to what they're putting in left-center field, where the bleachers usually are? Are they already good start putting in some of the new seats? Or, do they always take the bleacher-like seats out every offseason...? Just wondering, because that's where I'm sitting Opening Day...
  5. QUOTE(asboog @ Feb 22, 2005 -> 04:16 PM) I tried my hand at one too if you would like to add it to the list. http://www.andrewswanson.net/Rowand.jpg Looks good, boog! And, Welcome to Soxtalk!
  6. Here's the link, it's a free article, no subscription required: Link. B-Mac at 23, Anderson at 32, and former Sox outfield prospect Jeremy Reed at 10. Thoughts?
  7. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 07:49 PM) I don't know, he's been fighting with his wife and doesn't eat when he's stressed, he's getting older and isn't comfortable with the extra weight, he's working out less and enjoying the sunset of his career. We can convict anyone of we try hard enough. Frank tore a bicep muscle. Who tears bicep muscles except guys on juice? Frank has been somewhat moody throught his career! (I don't for a moment believe Frank has ever used steroids, just pointing out how easy it is to convict someone) All I'm saying is rushing to judgement isn't something I want to do. Feel free to choose in your mind whose juiced and who isn't. I've decided that speculation isn't something I want to do. I agree with your post about speculation, but Thomas' injury was really a freak incident and shouldn't be used anywhere near the argument of him being on steroids...
  8. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 06:48 PM) All around the league, fans are pointing to players on other teams and claiming that guy who lost weight was on the juice; while *my* guy just needed to drop a couple pounds, he was flabby, etc. What's a guy in Minnesota suppose to think about the new slimmer, trimmer Carl. The same guy who was so moody all those seasons? Hmmm. The guy stops working out so hard and gains a few pounds of flab where muscle was and the world has him on the steroids. Tex -- why in the hell would I-Rod drop weight after having the season he did in Detroit? And, if Carl was on 'roids, he sure as hell wasted his money, because he was a real fatass lasts season. Roids usually enhances ones performance, and I doubt that Carl was enhanced at all last season...
  9. I figured I'd throw out a few more fact or fictions, if that's cool with everyone... Fact or Fiction -- The five starters that will start the season (Buehrle, Garcia, Garland, Contreras, Hernandez) will combine for 70 or more wins. Fact or Fiction -- Iguchi will post numbers (talking BA and OBP exclusively) better than Kaz Matsui did last season (.272/.331). Fact or Fiction -- Joe Crede will rebound from last season, hit above .260 and hit 20+ homers. Facto or Fiction -- AJ Pierzynski will post numbers better than his personal best season of 2003 (.312/.360, 11 HR, 74 RBIs). I'll give my answers later...
  10. QUOTE(SEALgep @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 12:06 AM) Harris doesn't utilize his speed, so what good is it if you can't manufacture anything with it. He's young, but Harris has flaws that prevent the Sox from making him the everyday second baseman. Ironic, maybe, but smart nonetheless. 19 stolen bases and just about the best range of any secondbaseman in the AL is pretty good utilization of his speed, but maybe that's just me...
  11. QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 02:45 AM) What would you guys think about picking up Rolle. That's what I was thinking... He's in his late-20's IIRC, so he definitely should still have 'it'. He'd be a great addition to our defensive backfield, provided he comes at the right price.
  12. Thanks for the news, gotoh! Definitely good to hear.
  13. QUOTE(POPPY_HIDALGO @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 09:22 PM) Buehrle, Garcia, Contrerras, El Duque and Garland looks like it might get them 3 more wins than the rotation I predicted. LOL. And you called the Red Sox a .500 team last year, too.
  14. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 09:19 PM) Welcome back Poppy! LOL! Look at his past posts. What happened to 'Write it down, boys. Next years starting rotation of Buehrle, Garcia, Contreras, Diaz, and Garland?
  15. QUOTE(CubKilla @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 05:18 AM) 35 was just a number I threw out based on the fact that most preseason predictions I see from the eternal optimists on assorted Sox boards have Rowand hitting anywhere between 30-35 HR's. I, like you have stated with stats in the above stated post, don't think that's going to happen. BUt what the hell do I know. I've only been right about most things Sox the past 3 years. And I'm glad you were right about the Sox doing jack-s*** this offseason.
  16. QUOTE(Chisoxmatt @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 09:28 PM) How do you like that Youngstown Indians?! Unfortunately, I doubt he has any clue as to what ERA+ is...
  17. Ugh... This isn't going to get done. They just had a guy on from one of the major Canadien networks, and no deal is done. He said they're still very far apart... Wow, this f***ing sucks.
  18. f***ing s***. On TheFan590, the guy said things are getting grim. The meetings have ended, and rumors are leaking that this isn't going to get done, and that the NHLPA is packing up and leaving.
  19. The Fan590, a sports radio station in Toronto, has announced that the NHL will have a press conference at 6 EST. (Getting this from Blackhawkzone.com) Kap, I dunno if you're here or not, but if you hear anything, can you let us know?
  20. Lankford misses both free throws. This is a pathetic job at the free throw line by both teams...
  21. Iowa State is pissing this game down their leg by way of not making free throws...
  22. QUOTE(danman31 @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 07:59 PM) The NHL. That's why I started the sentence with f*** the NHL, My bad, then. I thought when you used, you, you were talking to us hockey fans. Sorry for calling you a moron.
  23. QUOTE(Beastly @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 07:32 PM) I didn't say something stupid, I just didn't read what I say, alright buddy? I'm not going to get heated with you over this, it would be stupid to do so. I'm not trying to make it heated. You were the one who made the 'comedian' comment, and I was just saying that I interpreted what you said: as, because Everett is faster than Thomas, that makes him equal or better. Like I said, sorry I can't interpret what you meant to say, not actually did say.
  24. QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 07:37 PM) Keith, I think your Option B is what this spring is all about. I truly believe they haven't found the right deal yet. Yeah, that's what I was thinking to myself as I posted that. Rest assured, Harris does have value. There is value in this league that can hit righties pretty well, is lightning fast, and plays outstanding defense. And, while he's not versetaille in what we need him to be (2b/SS/3B), he's still able to play second and centerfield, which is a pretty good commoditty. I just don't think any of these fairytale deals will go down where we get our utility guy for Harris straight up. If it was like that, it would have happened already. I'd like to see them get a young pitcher, if they can, for Harris. You can never have too much pitching depth, and that's what I'd like to see Kenny focus on as far as rebuilding this farm system...
