2016 Olympics
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 11:29 AM) Why would Obama not want to go? I'd like to hear that reasoning. I think he felt it would be over the top. Plus., there ARE more important issues to deal with.

2016 Olympics
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 10:43 AM) I’m not trying to make an ideological political statement (that's for the Buster). Just a logical assessment. Fair or not, Obama put a lot on the line here. The Obama, Michelle, Winfrey trifecta was supposed to be a shoo-in. Via TPM- Obama didnt want to go

Who will get the 2016 Games?
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) I'm calling the upset win for Madrid; Spain's Juan Antonio Samaranch and his old boy network of European take advantage of a split between Chicago and Rio in the early rounds of voting, and IOC gives it to Madrid as sort of a "lifetime achievement" award to its former president. Madrid makes the finals.

2016 Olympics
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) Why is Chicago separated from the other cities? It looks like their original bid number prior to the list being pared down to 4.

2016 Olympics
QUOTE (G&T @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 10:18 AM) For anyone either watching or listening on the Score, is this just a rules reading? I though someone was eliminated at this point. Reading rules and preparing for the first round.

Who will get the 2016 Games?
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) Thus, its a good thing the City wouldn't adminster the Olympics to anywhere near the same degree. It's being run by Daley and his people. 'nuf said.

Who will get the 2016 Games?
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 10:07 AM) Millennium Park is the example I worry about most Ding Ding! Projected to Cost: $150 million Actual Cost: $475 million, delayed 4 years.

Could we do it today?
I dont see going to the moon as a party thing. It's an agenda thing. Dems might say it's more important to focus on school funding or health care and Republicans might say it's more government waste and better left to the private sector.

Who will get the 2016 Games?
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:58 AM) The former, as has been illustrated numerous times, is incredibly unlikely. Even the naysayers are predicting a $4B net gain. They'd have to blow through all of that, AND through the insurance, AND through any additional private funding, AND through the reserve fund. Incredibly unlikely, barring some sort of disaster like a terrorist attack. What major project in Chicago, in recent history, has gone at or even NEAR budget? Good Lord, "The Bean" was 4x OVER budget and it was just a metal sculpture! Let's not mention htat it takes 3 different union workers to carry a box from the loading dock to your display McCormick Place.

2016 Olympics
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:54 AM) Just for fun, here are some predictions from.... psychics. Of the three interviewed, 2 say Chicago, one says Rio. someone's gonna be discredited as a "legit" psychic.

Who will get the 2016 Games?
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:52 AM) Tell me how you think Chicago's corruption with the Olympics is going to effect you. The Olympics will run way over budget... book it. And they will find a way to pass that along to the tax payers... an no, not just chicago. They will find a way to say "hey, see how it effected all of cook county? Yea, we need you to pay up too!" Daley will use this as yet another power grab. If he can plow over Meigs with no warning or authority, imagine what in can do in the name of the olympics.

Something to feel good about....
On a completely unrelated note, this makes you shake your head....

Who will get the 2016 Games?
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) I'm calling the upset win for Madrid; Spain's Juan Antonio Samaranch and his old boy network of European take advantage of a split between Chicago and Rio in the early rounds of voting, and IOC gives it to Madrid as sort of a "lifetime achievement" award to its former president. not a chance that happens.

Who will get the 2016 Games?
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:32 AM) As has been stated numerous times, Rio's level of government corruption makes Chicago look like amateurs. I dont care how corrupt Rio is. I know how the Chicago corruption will effect me. Let the Rio residents deal with their Olympic problems.

Who will get the 2016 Games?
Chicago will get it. The cronies are there, it'll get done, no matter the cost to pay off people. Rio deserves it. They put forward a solid bid and the "Global Olympic Movement" needs to be more global than visiting the same countries over and over again.
