$838 billion stimulus bill passes Senate
HuskyCaucasian replied to Steve9347's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 09:02 PM) Especially since if you take the Democratic logic to the opposite extreme, they shouldn't be using anything with gasoline or oil because they voted against oil exploration, and want other fuel sources. actually, the example there would be to not use oil from off-shore. Democrats havent voted against oil, just certain explorations. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:19 AM) Ok, so Jack's dad was in a coffin when he got to the island and obviously now is an important go between or is Jacob himself. When Locke reaches the island in a casket, dead, does he also enjoy the elevated status? I think that is a safe assumption.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 10:34 AM) http://www.webtvwire.com/iphone-disappoint...ck-price-falls/ exactly why the stock market is a joke. They set their expectations SO high that when Apple blew everyone away with the iphone... it wasnt good enough for wall street... they demanded and expected more. So, apple went down. it's dumb. -

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) LMAO. Every time someone from his administration or the almighty himself speaks, Wall Street tanks. O-BAMA! O-BAMA! O-BAMA! and the day Apple released the first iPhone.. Apples stock tanked. The stock market is a persnickety irrational beast. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 08:58 AM) I don't think there is any meaningful correlation there. well, if employment is a driving force behind the wellness of our economy, it would be logical to suggest that high unemployment is bad, while low unemployment is good. And the party in power has great ability to move unemployment rates with the correct fiscal policies. And since 1950, only one republican president has lowered unemployment and only one Dem has raised it (and that was only by a small margin, but shot up shortly after he left office). And yes, there are an infinite amount of outside sources that have an effect on our economy. So, if we are talking about the best policies to govern a countries economic well being... it's been the democrats... with the exception of the GOP golden boy Regan.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 08:29 AM) Well, I understand that's their philosophy in general, but like, to act like, Oh, we got this, I know how to solve this economic collapse...extend Bush's tax cuts! Here's an interesting graphic... Since 1950, unemployment has gone down during Dem rule and up during Rep rule. And to help finish off the chart, The day Obama took office, the unemployment rate was 7.2%. The highest since Bill Clinton took office.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 07:04 AM) I find it hysterical that the GOp keeps pushing Tax cuts and deregulation as a way to make the economy better. HELLO!!!

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 08:23 AM) I wonder if he has already etched "US Senator" on his creepy gravestone? no doubt he has... or will be. He'll odly forget to mention he was appointed by a corrupt politician. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 14, 2009 -> 07:34 PM) Well I suppose it was good that one of Obama's nominees actually withdrew because of convictions, and not a lack of convicitions... I can respect what Gregg did. i think we've ALL been in a situation like that... just not in such a high profile way. We've all committed to something int he heat of them oment, then in the days/weeks after, we start to think.. "this was not a good idea. I got caught up". I have no problem with him saying "I made a mistake."

I guess this belongs int he Fillibuster given its political remifications... GM considering Chapter 11 filing, new company Well, it would be a rather bold move. I'm not sure of the economic impact, but sometimes situations call for bold action and in their eyes, the only way to save the company is basically to start from scratch in a sense. At least they are trying something.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 08:29 AM) USDA and FDA are two very different things. Now if you want to combine them only to eliminate duplicity, fine. B ut FDA does many different things then USDA, which is why my initial reaction. I think the concept is to merge the two agencies that deal with the public's health with regards to ingested items. (that sounds a little rough, but you get the point). It might eliminate SOME duplicity... but its really mroe to help address food problems faster.
