QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 11:47 AM) Yeah , I have a ton of box sets like Zep, PJ, GNR as well as every CD i've ever owned post house-fire. Thats why I have a few different ipods. Yea, I scoured my entire collection and got rid of any dupes, songs I never listened too or didn't like, etc. Like, for example, I have quite a few GNR songs right now, but there was a time my collection consisted of every album, every best of album, etc...including all the duplicates that came with them. and all the songs I never listened too. All gone. My GNR collection probably went from 150 songs to 15. I've removed all that garbage and just kept what I liked/used, instead. In the process, the size of my library probably dropped by 50%.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) No, not like that at all. It's not quite the same, but equally ignorant. Then again, it's also a foregone conclusion that any bill from either side will favor themselves and the other side will balk anyway.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 11:27 AM) HAHA. Probably true. I have over 100 gigs of music on my classic in my car with probably 30+ playlists. my iphone simply doesnt cut it. I have tons of music, but none I won't listen too. I don't collect songs or albums for the sake of having songs/albums. If there was just 1 song I liked off an album, I have that 1 song. That's the entire advantage of digital music...I no longer have to have all the garbage songs that came with the ones that were actually good. The ONLY band I have entire albums from is Rush. I have about 18 gigs of music on my iPhone, and that's already overkill...it'd be impossible to listen too it all before I could easily swap it out for more -- which I never do.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 11:26 AM) MplayerX from the app store. Free player that is much better than Quicktime from what I've seen so far. The new Appstore on the launch bar is an awesome idea. This the droid you're looking for: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 10:56 AM) It was a quicktime issue, I downloaded MPX and everything plays just fine. Just took QT off my default list. That thing really is a piece of s***. What is MPX?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 10:32 AM) Can you help me dude. I downloaded and installed and now nothing from my 2 external HD's will play on QUicktime. It comes up, and I can double click on the movies but then nothing happens when I hit play. I figure its already indexed it. Do a repair permissions on the external drive. Thinking about it, it shouldn't have anything to do with indexing, as that's merely for searching at a faster speed. Is it only movies you are having issues with, or anything you try to do off an external drive? Could be a bug if it's not permissions related.

And yes, it's free.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 09:40 AM) I made no such claim and never have, not sure where you got that idea. What I said, I thought clearly, was that the PARTY doesn't tend to get pulled by those extremists as much in the Democratic party as it is in the Republican party. If the Dems were the same on this topic, imagine a wave of a hundred Kucinich-like liberals waving into office and then the Dems suddenly followed their agenda. That is clearly not the case here. And "at this specific moment in time" goes without saying, these things change over time. Well then I took what you said incorrectly. We agree, that since the rise of this tea party, there are now a lot of extreme republicans, and IMO, they're doing great damage to the republican party right now.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 08:43 AM) There's a handful of guys like Kucinich who are pretty liberal for American politics. I don't think there's any comparable symmetry between that and the large number of GOP'ers that have signed pledges to never raise revenues ever or to let the economy implode. Like I said, there's a lot more of them since the rise of the NeoCon TeaParty.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 08:35 AM) Indeed. That was my initial argument. Stop agreeing with me. Every time you do, a baby seal dies.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 08:27 AM) This is where the Dems and GOP really are very different. The modern Dems don't get dragged to ideological extremes - they get dragged into so much comrpomise that they come off as wimps and fail to protect their constituents. The modern GOP on the other hand, outright embraces extremism and principal, to a point so ridiculous that they can't achieve anything. There are quite a few extreme Democrats in office, and we call them Liberals. Since the rise of the "Tea Party", there are simply MORE extreme Republicans at this specific moment in time. This doesn't mean it won't eventually sway the other direction someday. Note that I put "Tea Party" in quotes, because it's not a new party or alternative party, it's merely extreme Republicans. As I see things: Liberal | Democrat | Moderate/Independent | Republicans | NeoCon/"Tea Party" If you are all the way on that scale, you are extreme, regardless of people such as yourself claiming there are no extreme Democrats...which is just ridiculous.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 08:09 AM) He pushed multiple compromise plans. The one I liked, a couple weeks ago now, was a $4T deficit cut over 10 years, but must includde re-tooling the tax structure, removing a lot of breaks/credits, and getting rid of some of the Bush tax cuts. Funny thing was, both parties balked at it. Yea, this is the one I liked too. Something strange is going on here on Soxtalk politics when we start agreeing more and more.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 07:16 AM) This is for whoever mentioned that ipod sales were actually growing. Anyone that thinks dedicated music players are going to sell well at this point is out of touch. Obviously, Apple is still raking money in on these, but they're being replaced by all-in-one devices like the modern smartphone/iPhone.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 02:16 AM) After being ever so healthy most of my life (knock on wood) I got diagnosed with high blood pressure. After eating way better and monitoring it for 2 months (I haven't even had a beer all summer), it's still too high so they have put me on Bystolic. Have any of u taken this stuff? Did it lower your blood pressure? Does high blood pressure just exist in the body as a deep dark secret, or can it cause symptoms? For instance since getting on this stuff I feel like some pressure/numbness I felt in my temple, which brought me to the doc in the first place, has reduced. And lately I haven't felt as if I am close to fainting, which also brought me to the doc in the first place. Is this all psychosematic (sp?) or can high blood pressure f*** u up so to speak?? Thank u. I figured somebody on here must have hi blood pressure. You are feeling the normal aftereffects of lowered BP. People with high blood pressure sometime explain a near feeling of vibration throughout their bodies due to how high their BP is, what they're feeling is the rush of blood through their systems. They think this sensation is normal, but it's not. When your BP is then lowered, and there is less blood rushing through your system because it's rushing at a slower rate, this is where the feint feeling comes in. Your body, your brain in specific, is used to the high rate of oxygen it was getting from the massive amount of blood rushing through it...when your pressure is brought down, less oxygen is flowing -- however, it's also the proper amount of oxygen, you just have to re-acclimate to the lowered/normal amount. High BP is not an "in your head" problem, it's an actual physical problem...and yes, not only can it "f*** you up", so much so that it can kill you. The higher the BP in your system is, the more duress the blood vessels are throughout your body, if they burst, depending on where they burst, it can cause debilitating injury or even instant death. Example, if a blood vessel under pressure bursts in your brain, high chance of saying bye bye forever...either that, or some permanent brain damage. Over time, they will either raise or lower the amount of medication you are on to get your BP back to normal levels, then you will maintain. You can assist this process by eating healthy. And less salt. This is the one time where salt can make BP worse...if you have high BP, salt is bad, which is a pretty common misconception people have about salt. Salt does not cause high BP, but if you have high BP, salt will make it worse. The drug you are on, and I haven't heard of that specific version, is probably just a statin derivative, as most BP drugs are. Edit: No, I do not have high BP. My father, however, did...I had to take him to the emergency room when he had a nosebleed that gushed for hours. Turns out his BP was 290/180...needless to say, they instantly admitted him into the ER and he had a 5 day stay at the hospital due to the extreme rate of BP, they had to lower it in a controlled manner or he would have died from a precipitous fall of BP.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 09:13 PM) How much bandwidth do you guys pay for your internet? I need to figure out what plan to buy for an apartment this year. And what rates are you guys getting? Right now it's about $30 for 15 mbps from Comcast. I have a package of comcast TV + Internet, and I don't even know what tier speed I have these days, I had originally downgraded it, but over time they bumped it up. Overall, I'm more than happy with my Internet speeds... This is from Chicago to San Francisco...and it's pretty fast.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 10:22 AM) Did you guys pay for it or torrent it? Paid. I don't pirate software, or anything that can possibly be recoded and have back doors inserted into it, especially when we are talking about 30$.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 09:22 AM) My old HTC (3 or 4 years old) just stopped making calls one day. Well, that is 3 or 4 years old...most EVO's aren't even a year old and they start having problems.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 09:00 AM) This this this. I was still able to go golfing when it was 90+ and humid at 7pm last week. How can I golf in the super cold? Can I jump in a swimming pool and see chicks in bikinis when it's super cold? Would I rather mow the lawn once a week, while sweating feeling good, or shovel 3-5 times a week? These are important questions I demand answered. Owned.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 09:00 AM) I got it on launch day last June. It has a broken charging port (have to swap batteries on an external charger...super f***ing annoying), has multiple burnt out pixels on the screen, light is bleeding above the capacitive buttons, large area of dust behind the screen in the upper right corner, and cracked shell/casing near the power button. At first glance it looks like it's in pretty good shape but I get annoyed looking at it with all of its imperfections. Sounds like poor build quality. I've beaten the crap out of my iPhone4, never using a case, and it has no mechanical problems. A few scratches and dings, but nothing mechanical, no light bleeds, no dead pixels, etc.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 07:04 AM) Seeing that I'm no expert in these matters, do I have to worry about my 401K right now? I'm on the verge of possibly accepting a job offer in another state and I'm worried that by the time I transition over, my 401k might take a huge hit because of the aftermath of this situation. Should I be transferring the funds into an international fund within my plan or anything until this situation is resolved? It wouldn't matter if it was in an international fund or not, if the US defaulted, they'd cause more havoc in foreign markets than in their own. You can always roll your 401k over into a self directed IRA, where you'd receive it's cash worth, but you cannot do that so long as you are still working for the company in which you have the 401k. However, if you aren't working, and can in fact roll it out, I would do that. At least then you have the cash value and can invest it as you see fit. You are still young, so you don't need to worry about your 401k, by the time you go to use it upon retirement, the world would probably be well recovered in the event of a US default in 2011 (which won't happen anyway). Also, while investing in a 401k, you actually want the markets down...this helps you amass more stock in whichever funds you are in, and in the future, you want the market to go up. I know a lot of people love looking at their 401k numbers, but they're meaningless until retirement age anyway.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 08:40 PM) Yea, I've seen it. And I've gotten personally screwed by it at least three times in my career now. And I do pretty much everything and more that's asked of me. I just don't suck schlong is about the nicest way I can put it right now. Then maybe you should, and we wouldn't have to read your vile filled posts because you'd be in a better mood.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 08:27 PM) Depends, I know currently the market for people in IT is ridiculously high, and there's not enough supply at all. In fact, my company is having to headhunt to try and fill positions, and if you're being headhunted then you have much more leverage. That's because in IT, most people have little to no real world experience...it's why I feel sorry for college grads with IT related degrees. Almost everything they've learned is pretty much everything they'll never use.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 08:19 PM) I get how this works, but people go way too far, and it's not for everyone. People can absolutely b**** if they want to b****, and judge if they want to judge. Some people are a joke, and if they get a promotion due to ass kissing over merit (if the other employee is also nice, just not an ass kisser, than that's bulls***, people can b**** about that. If working at XYZ company is that bad that the only way to move up is to be a complete slave to the boss, i.e. running personal errands, always hanging out with them socially, letting them control parts of your life they have no business doing, etc, then that boss sucks, and I wouldn't want to be there anyway. Ass kissing isn't the only way to move up, which is what you're leading on. No, I'm not leading on to that at all...it's merely one facet of the game called business. And again, what I'm talking about it not ass kissing. That said, if you're running personal errands for your boss, ok...that's over the professional line and I get that you can consider something like that "ass kissing"...but going out of your way to be nice, and to be social, that's not ass kissing, though most perceive it to be. I'd never run personal errands for any boss, because you're right in that regard, it's not a boss I'd even want or accept. You guys are talking about absolute extreme cases...in my entire professional career, I've NEVER witnessed any such extreme cases. I did, however, witness the typical quiet people vs the more social people like myself...and the quiet guys call me an ass kisser...maybe that's where the confusion lies between what you're saying, and what I'm saying.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 12:34 PM) Sullivan dissects Bill O'Reilley's argument that Breivik couldn't be a Christian. This is just a snippet: I don't really agree with much of what this loon is saying about O'Reilly, like him or not. I also don't agree with O'Reilly whenever he invokes his religion, either...but yet and still, to claim they're not very different is just f***ing stupid. In specific: "But it is hard to see where O'Reilly would disagree with vast tracts of Breivik's ideology - except the resort to violence. Ideologically, there is scarcely any difference at all." IMO, based on the various sources I've read, Breivik was not a christian, he was many pieces of many idealism's all smashed together in a very nutty way, so pointing to one small part of that insanity and saying, "that's what he was!", is misrepresentation of the facts. I also read he was somewhat outspoken against most of what Christianity represented...so painting him as a Christian is disingenuous at best. I know a few Muslims myself, very peaceful people, and when people place them in the violent 'you are all terrorists' camp, it's equally stupid. I'm sick and tired of crazy people doing crazy s*** and people blaming religion or allowing these nuts to blame religion. I know a few religious people that I actually consider religious, that aren't just religious via family designation or because it sounds good, but actually attend church, etc...all are VERY peaceful people, regardless of which religion it is. Crazy is f***ing crazy, whether the person is an athiest, a muslim or a f***ing christian. And for the record, I'm pretty anti-deist...although I try to keep such rants to myself. That's why when BigSqwert tried to get me to attend his born again cult church I told him I'd rather be a vegan.
