MIAMI (AP) The Florida Marlins acquired reliever Billy Koch from the Chicago White Sox for minor league infielder Wilson Valdez late Thursday night. Advertisement The deal was announced shortly after the Marlins beat the White Sox 2-1 in 12 innings. The Marlins acquired Koch and cash from the White Sox, who had recently replaced the right-hander with Shingo Takatsu - Japan's all-time saves leader - as the team's closer. "I was sort of expecting it a little bit, but I didn't think (Florida)," Koch said. "Through the grapevine, I hear things. I never heard the Marlins, but it'll be good. I like the heat, I like the sun." Koch, 29, never quite fit in with the White Sox after joining them last season. He appeared in 24 games this season with eight saves in 11 opportunities and a 1-1 record - but had a 5.40 ERA. Koch allowed 24 hits and 15 runs in 23 innings. "That will be the best scenario for him," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "It's a shame it didn't work out for him here because he was a class act." The Marlins were in need of bullpen help in the middle innings to complement a solid starting rotation and closer Armando Benitez. Before trading for Koch, the Marlins' latest acquisition was 36-year-old Josias Manzanillo, who was called up from Triple-Albuquerque on Wednesday. "He's a proven closer who knows how to handle games late," Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest said of Koch. "We'll put him right in that spot, in front of Benitez. "Maybe a change of scenery will be good for him." Koch is 28-23 with 163 career saves in six major league seasons with Toronto, Oakland and Chicago. The 25-year-old Valdez was hitting .319 in 66 games at Albuquerque. Florida claimed him off waivers from Montreal in March 2002.

Arnold will have two years in Illini uniform after sitting out upcoming season June 15, 2004 Champaign, Ill. - Marcus Arnold, a 6-8, 240-pound junior forward from Chicago (Morgan Park H.S.), has announced his decision to transfer to the University of Illinois and join Bruce Weber's basketball program. Arnold arrives in Champaign after spending his first two years at Illinois State. Arnold started 27 games last season at ISU, ranking second on the team in scoring with an average of 12.3 points. He reached double figures in 20 games, scoring a career-high 23 points versus Western Kentucky and equaling his career best with 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting against the Illini on Jan. 3 at the Assembly Hall. Arnold shot 53 percent from the field, led the Redbirds with 4.6 rebounds per game and ranked second in the Missouri Valley with an average of 1.2 blocks. He was voted captain of the Missouri Valley Conference's Most Improved Team while also garnering honorable mention All-Valley honors. Arnold started 20 games as a freshman, averaging 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds. He was named to the 2003 Missouri Valley All-Newcomer Team. "We're pleased to have Marcus join our team," Weber said. "He's a player that will provide a low-post presence and give us depth on the frontline. Usually you discourage a transfer, but occasionally you have a situation where a fresh start benefits the individual and this was the case with Marcus. He has an opportunity to come in and work hard and help make our team better next year. Hopefully, he will then put himself in a position where he can compete for playing time and contribute the following two seasons." Arnold will sit out the 2004-05 season as a redshirt due to NCAA transfer rules. He will then have two years of eligibility remaining with the Illini. ----------------------------------- Champaign, Ill. - University of Illinois senior forward Roger Powell, Jr. has decided to withdraw his name from the 2004 NBA Draft List. "My best decision is to return to Illinois and play for the Fighting Illini my senior season," Powell said. "I bleed Orange and Blue and I can't wait for this next season to get started. With all the players we have returning and having Coach Weber here for his second year, it should be a fun and exciting season. Go Illini!" Illinois Head Coach Bruce Weber was happy to hear the news that his senior starter would return for the 2004-05 season. "I'm happy Roger has decided to return," Weber said. "This decision is best for him and becomes a positive for him and our team, and gives him an opportunity to prepare for a possible future professional career." Powell averaged 11.6 points and 5.0 rebounds, while shooting 59.5 percent from the field in 2003-04. The Fighting Illini return all five starters and their top 10 scorers from a 26-7 squad who won the outright Big Ten Championship and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

The New York Mets have acquired outfielder Richard Hidalgo from the Houston Astros for reliever David Weathers, according to a report. The New York Daily News is reporting that the Mets will also receive $4 million in cash from Houston, which is ridding itself of a contract that calls for Hidalgo to be paid $12 million this season and $15 million in 2005. The paper also reports the Mets are likely to buy out the final year of Hidalgo's contract for $2 million. Hidalgo hit 44 home runs and drove in 122 for the Astros in 2000, but has not approached those numbers since and has apparently fallen out of favor with Houston manager Jimy Williams. Hidalgo is hitting .256 with four home runs and 30 RBI in 58 games this season. Weathers, a 14-year veteran joining his ninth team, appeared in 32 games this seaon for the Mets. He is 5-3 with a 4.28 ERA in 33 2/3 innings.

Rivas' drive over the wall in the left-field corner was called fair by third base umpire Brian O'Nora. Television replays, however, clearly showed the ball sailed to the left of the net that serves as a foul pole at Olympic Stadium and should have been ruled foul. "The replay just confirmed what you saw, that's all," said Robinson, the Expos' manager who was ejected after a lengthy argument. "In plain language, (O'Nora) said he saw it and he saw the ball hit the foul pole. He saw it shaking." Expos left fielder Brad Wilkerson immediately jumped up and down when he saw O'Nora signal a fair ball. Wilkerson ran in to join third baseman Tony Batista and Robinson, who came out of the dugout to argue. "I was close enough to see it, I don't need to see a replay," Wilkerson said. "I saw it hit the (back) wall and bounce back. I looked down and he signaled fair ball and I was just caught by surprise so I was just trying to get in there and give any help I could to try to get the call right, and it didn't work." O'Nora was joined by umpires Phil Cuzzi, Mike Fichter and Brian Knight, who conferred but let the decision stand. "I saw the umpire signal home run and that's all I really (care) about, to tell you the truth," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I didn't see it. I haven't looked at a replay. I'm not really worried about it -- it's one point for us." Robinson repeatedly berated the entire crew, continuing after he returned to the dugout before he was ejected by crew chief Fichter, the first base umpire. Robinson came back out of the dugout to renew his dispute with Fichter. The manager made a series of choking gestures before he was ejected, bowing toward O'Nora to the applause of the tiny crowd of 3,763. "What can you do about it?" Robinson said. "Four guys out there all saying that they saw it the same way - you've got to be kidding me! Didn't any of them see it the right way? That's the key. I don't care how they saw it, all four may have seen it one way, but it wasn't right." Expos fans gave a mock cheer after every foul ball the rest of the innings. Three fans were swarmed by security guards after the game when they banged on the door to the umpire's room. The umpires were not available for comment. "I didn't even see the ball," Rivas said. "When I got to first base I thought they would call it foul and when I saw the umpire, he called it fair."
