Sosa had 449 games and 1757 at-bats in the minors. He hit 35 homeruns (but he never took steroids in his life),.265 average and a .402slg %. Those are not very impressive numbers. Then he was probally an even worse outfielder than he is now. Ouch.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 4, 2005 -> 01:14 PM) Based on what? AJ was a career .300 hitter before his dissapointing season in SF last year. Barrett is a career .260 hitter even after his good year with the Cubs last season. In 529 career innings playing catcher, Barrett has 44 passed balls, 31 errors, has allowed 311 stolen bases, and has thrown out 101, 24.5% CS. In 534 career in playing catcher, AJ has 23 passed balls, 20 errors, has allowed 197 stolen bases, and has thrown out 82, 29.4% CS. Pierz is so damn underated defensively as a catcher it's not even funny. From what i have seen he moves around back there pretty well and seems to block everything in the dirt. I have seen very few better in the past five years better at blocking balls in the dirt. Why is it always said he is a bad catcher? Because of his weak arm?

This is just stupid. He is 20 years old and in the major leagues. I have a feeling he may know how to handle pressure.

There is only one reason why this article has rowand in left field. It is because they want to have the advantage on paper. Only stupid ass people would think to start the year scott podsednik will be in center. How has he proved he was any better of a fielder than rowand.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 09:28 PM) No offense Qwerty, but you're not exactly known for your posting lengths either. s***, I can't even count all the occasions you typed "1-2-3" during gameday threads. I was even considering adopting "1-2-3" as your unofficial nickname. When the season was going you are 100% correct. But after the season ended i have have been much better. I don't think i am gonna post in the game threads because my post count seems to piss people off. Also, knuckle added nothing whatsoever to this board.

QUOTE(YoungstownIndians @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 06:42 PM) Yeah I think we can all say we fell shaky when our pens come into play. Our rotations are really solid. Its just the matter of the offense and pen. You guys got the edge on pitching. We got the edge on hittin. That makes it so tough to decide!!!! and to witesoxfan or w/e... 260:-39 ISN'T A SCIENTIFIC POLL! You have alot of members at your site.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) But fact is, when a player hits 308,288,320,328 with 66,63,50,64,49 hr's and at one point had an OBP of 437 thats pretty damn good. Steroids and corked bats do that to you.

QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 04:06 PM) i dont thik so. he is get paid like 10 mil, so they wouldnt. plus hes a FA after this yr. i heard he would do some dh'ing and platooning. they cant wait to get rid of him. there are no takers at all for him. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 12:08 PM) I agree let's defer the CLE pen debate until mid-season. You obviously feel a deep need to look at CLE as the glass 1/2 full & the SOX as the glass 1/2 empty. Maybe in regards to lady luck you're not wrong. But right now based on what they did in 04 & their health I will take the SOX 1-4 pen over CLE's. At mid-season we'll look at the $ stats: saves, wins, holds, & losses. Injuries are a part of the game so no exceptions. Byrd's health didn't hold up in 04. B 51 Byrd, Paul ATL R 114.1IP 3.94ERA 79K 8W 11.34MOB .749OPS A 30 Contreras, Jose CHW R 170.1IP 5.50ERA 150K 13W 13.63MOB .786OPS Contra's walked 30 in 70IP in 03, & 84 in 170IP in 04. Compare that to Mark's 51 in 245IP. Can Contra cut is walks in 1/2 in 05? If he does that he'll be worth the 6M. That's the challenge ahead for the SOX. Byrd was healthy once he got back and never missed a start once he got back. Also, ''lady luck''? Get outta here.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 04:36 AM) Even if he does, it could easily correlate more to batting in the 3rd spot instead of the 4th or 5th spot than from leaving the A's and "The Great" Billy Beane. Bold prediction there, boss. :rolly He will be batting third for a month maybe two. Also batting third does not always translate into seeing less pitches. Most times you actually see more pitches batting third. Regardless where he bats i stand by bold prediction that he sees .25 less pitches per plate appearance. Since beane does not control him it it should be within .5 either way correct?
-
QUOTE(Jabroni @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 04:30 AM) You must believe that Beane somehow magically possessed Dye's body and took over his at bats when he was with the A's. I doubt a career .246 OBP player like Billy Beane is going to to be able to tutor Dye into having more plate discipline. :rolly Believe what you wish. I bet you dye sees at least .25 less pitchers per at-bat next season.
-
QUOTE(Jabroni @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 04:14 AM) I understand the desire to work pitchers but as long as A.J. gets close to his career .294 AVG and .336 OBP, I wouldn't worry about how many pitches he is taking. He's already a HUGE upgrade over Olivo / Davis. By the way, how does switching teams completely change Dye's plate discipline and make it worse? Please don't tell me that Dye's improved plate discipline with the A's was a result of Billy Beane. The plan beane has is to take alot of pitchers and alot of walks. Now dye will go back to his kc days since taking alot of pitches is not really the white sox philosophy.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 04:40 PM) A couple of thoughts... -Sorry for such a nit-picky post, but wasn't Fields drafted 18th, not 13th? -And, for anyone who watches the Athletics -- I've been thinking about this all offseason, yet never got the chance to ask this question. Is Jermaine Dye a guy who is going to be able to take a fair amount of walks this year, or what? I ask because, after looking over his stats, it seems as if he's unpredictable when it comes to that. I know he's known for his power, and good defense, as well as his pretty solid BA/SLG%, but his walks have jumped all over the place. In '99, '00, and '01, he seemed to be able to draw a fair amount of walks (58, 69, and 57 respectively). In 2002, his walk rate went down to 52, still a fair amount, but since then, he's been under fifty. He looks like a guy who, if he's able to hit for an average of .270 or above, should be able to give us a pretty good OBP too (.340 or so, though I know I probably shouldn't be concerned about his OBP all that much). Anyone have thoughts on Dye? -And finally -- as to the actual article, I think this quote basically sums up the key to our season: Dye will likely take less pitchers per at-bat this year now that he is away from the athletics. Last year he was fourth in the mlb pitchers/pa with 4.25. Ever since he went to the a's it has gone up about .25/.35. Honestly, i do not know what to expect from him. One bad thing is pierz had the worst pitchers/pa in the mlb at 3.07.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 10:50 PM) I gotta say this, I disagree with some of the salaries they gave but there is no doubt in my mind that the Dbacks are a much improved ball club over last season and if they were to acquire Byrnes I'd say they took another step in the right direction. I disagree, glaus is pretty damn overated and expensive. I would rather have tracy and hillenbrand and save 8 million dollars and spend that else where. They signed royce clayton. What else can i say but haha. Why not just stick with who has potential to get better unlike clayton. They signed ortiz for another bad price. They now have the two worst guys at getting the ball over the plate ( webb and ortiz). Vazquez will probally be very solid with them. They did a good job with green by restructing his deal because his previous deal was awful. He was due 16 million this year in the old deal for a guy that has had an ops of .1000 zero times in his career. Also think counsell was overpayed and did not deserve a two year deal. Also, does anyone know what happened to clark? Why is he now teh sux0rs after putting up solid numbers for several years. I could see if he was older but he has declined when you are suppose to be in your prime.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 12:47 AM) That's probably because of the arm surgery factor, but Byrd's also an extreme flyball pitcher. What about Kris Benson getting $22 million over 3 years or Derek Lowe getting $36 million over 4 years? Benson got that to set the market and screw the yankees. But that was a stupid move on the mets part since you cannot really screw the yankees when it comes to money now can you?

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) Sauerback has as much chance as regaining his old form as Marte does his dominance vs RH. Right now based on '04 you have to give the nod to Vizcaino over Sauernack. MM vs CP: Why is it that we can always expect SOX stars to digress but never other teams? MM has 59IP in his career. He has as much chance of repeating his '04 numbers as CP has in improving. Maybe a slight edge at best. At least you agree CLE has nothing to compare to Shingo & Marte. Now I just need you to accept that Vizcaino & Hermanson edge out CLE 3-4 guys. I'll accept their 5-6 are substantially better than the Sox. But here's the thing. What matters most in any pen are your front 4. The top 2 see the most work & the bottom 2 are the hold guys. Min has a decisive adv over the Sox in 1-4. That makes them the fav to win the div. But Cle is behind the Sox in 1-4. The 5-6 guys are used mostly for mop up duty. They don't factor nearly as much in the money stats (wins, saves, holds). Shingo's a crafty veteran closer & I'm sure he'll adjust to maintain his edge. Sauerback cannot regain his form why? Marte cannot be insanely dominant against righties again why? Oh and you are not gonna our 3-4 pitchers in the pen are better than theirs. But do not answer that. Just save this thread and we will check up on it at the all-star break and at the end of the year.
