Sox Draft Carlos Rodon> Draft Day Discussion Thread
My draft grades. Not really considering money/signability. It's pretty uninformed, just reading scouting reports for every past Rodon like everyone else. 1. Carlos Rodon- A+: Was my number one player in the draft and we got him at #3. Awesome. Could not have worked out better. 2. Spencer Adams- A: Great athlete has a pretty much perfect scouting report outside missing a 3rd pitch for now. Sox should be able to fix that. Luckily fell to us. Hard to do better. 3. Jace Fry- B: I like this pick too. High floor IMO. Terrific stats for the number 1 team in the land. Adds a couple mph and he could easily project into the mlb rotation. Else he should be able to make it a Loogy, something we desperately need. 4. Brett Austin- C: We needed a position player here so why not go with one of the best college bats. Unfortunately he doesn't have a position. Former first rounder so there's definitely talent. 5. Zach Thompson- B: Love this pick, even if it was for signability reasons. He's really raw but already has a plus fastball. If he can develop any of his secondary pitches he should definitely make it the pen. Sounds like they're going to try him as a starter first but he screams pen to me. 6. Louie Lechich- D: Signability pick. That's fine. Wasn't drafted as a junior, not a good sign. But put up decent numbers this year and is a good athlete. Can't find much on him whatsoever so that leads me to believe he wasn't really on anyone's radar. 7. Jake Peter- F: The worst pick for us so far IMO. He's a two way player that no one really knows what we drafted him as, probably because he doesn't project well at either. 8. John Ziznewski- B: A small conference player of the year. Huge all around production. Only downfall here is that he's 23, but that's okay for where we drafted him. Hopefully he can rise quickly. 9. Brian Clark- B: 2 pitch pitcher was dominant as a closer two years ago but struggled switching to the rotation and probably fell a bit because of that. I assume he has the pen in his future and I do believe he's a legit prospect there. 10. Jake Jarvis- A: This is probably a wasted pick since he's apparently not going to sign but for now we can pretend he will and that's obviously great value here. Overall- A: Great draft. Of course the first two picks were awesome but the later 8 I do believe we did mostly a good job of getting sign able guys who can eventually contribute at the MLB level.

3rd best prospect out of Ohio according to Baseball America. Ill take that. Seems like a future reliever. Struggled as a starter. Dominant as a closer two years ago.

The picks 3 through 5 weren't bad at all even if they are very sign able guys. It's really just these last two that are of little excitement.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) Hopefully they start feeling comfortable with their pool money left and can start targeting better players. Still, very happy with this draft so far. Yeah this last guy sounds like a rare case where he'd benefit by not signing going back his senior year

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 02:58 PM) I'm trying to think if I was Spencer Adams if I would take the payday, spend 3 great years of my life in buses across the minor leagues, or if I would go to college with the potential of getting a 5 million payday by waiting. Tough call. Have him talk to Brett Austin about that decision.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) Zach Thompson: 6'7" 210lbs DOB: 10/23/93 Thompson is fairly new to pitching, but already has the plus velocity that many scouts look for. Thompson’s fastball will sit in the low to mid 90s and touch 96 mph but comes in straight too often, especially when he leaves it up. He also throws a changeup, curveball and slider, and all three will need a good amount of development in pro ball to become consistent weapons. He does have decent command of his pitches and has shown a willingness to go right after hitters, which could help his stuff play up. Although raw, especially for a college arm, Thompson should intrigue teams with his frame and arm strength. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2014/drafttracker.jsp Sounds perfect for us. Future reliever?

Draft grades: http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2014/6/6/57863...014-first-round Chicago White Sox MLB DRAFT 2014 MLB Draft live draft tracker Here's the best left-hander ever selected third overall: Steve Avery. The second best is Brian Anderson, and I'm not even sure which one. Eighteen percent of the #3 picks never made the majors at all; 47 percent of #3 picks have a career WAR under 1. Yet the White Sox are going to pay close to $5.7 million for Rodon. It's like these teams are pretending the history of these picks doesn't exist. Horrible pick. Best-case scenario: Randy Johnson Middle-case scenario: Jeremy Affeldt Worst-case scenario: Brien Taylor Grade: F

I like Oliver more I read. Good, potentially great stuff, maybe better than anyone left. Hasn't been able to put it together yet for whatever reason. DUI a day before the draft because he's apparently a moron but that should be a great negotiating tactic.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Exactly. Reliever must be the easiest position to acquire/develop and has the lowest potential value. I'd be hard pressed to take a reliever in the top 5 rounds. Ring was the centerpiece for acquiring a hall of famer and Reed was plenty valuable for us before being shipped off for a top prospect. Small sample sizes and all that but they both worked out. Trying to think of anymore high reliever picks we made. Anyways, relievers can move quickly and be more of a sure thing. I'm all for it for now on.
