QUOTE(VAfan @ Aug 1, 2006 -> 12:54 PM) The Abreu deal disgusts me. Yanks buy the best player who moved at the deadline because no one else could afford his contract. And they gave up nothing in return. This move was baseball at its absolute worst. Abreu, frankly, belonged in Chicago as a lead off hitter in place of Podsednik, playing for his Venezuelan countryman, Ozzie Guillen. And we could have used the improved outfield defense, the much better OBP, and his ability to hit lefties and righties. But Abreu wouldn't have brought us another title, and his presence on the Yanks isn't going to deny us another title. That all comes down to starting pitching, as it almost always does. If our starting pitchers can find their fastballs and control, we still have the best team in baseball. If they continue to perform with ERAs at 4.77 runs a game, no amount of offense will help us. I don't understand your point, you seem to contradict yourself. If tAbreu on our team would not bring us another title and his presence on the Yankees won't affect their ability to impede us from winning another title, why is this baseball at its absolute worst? If, as you suggest (and I agree), that starting pitcher will be the determinant, then isn't Abreu really irrelevant to the discussion entirely?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2006 -> 06:08 AM) For some strange reason, teams don't want to trade the guys who are really good, and have no problems... I wonder why that is...

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 08:31 PM) As did I. I really dont like anything to do with the AL East, but he is simply incredible, and is great for the game. I thank God he isn't on the Twins anymore.

Ortiz hits a walk off HR. Would have been more surprised if he hadn't.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 07:30 PM) I'm not even sticking up for Garcia or Vazquez. I just found it funny that dickallen (one of the more pessimistic people on this site) stuck up for Rogers, who's been pitching like spiff since the break, and has a history of pitching like spiff after the break, yet has no problem at all killing our guys when they're struggling. got it.
-
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 07:25 PM) Well, Rogers' era is at 4.63 now. His era is well over 10 since the break. He has a history of piching like crap after the break. How is he any less useless than Garcia and Vazquez? Well, both at least have kept game somewhat close. If you recall, we won Garcia's last start and Jenks blew the save in Vazquez's previous start. Rogers has been much more similar to Buehrle's last few starts..

nobody f***s with DeJesus except Contreras who got him out

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 06:18 PM) Thome back in Chicago with wrist tendonitis. too much computer time?

Can we ever get a guy that's just awesome and not someone that Coop has to fix? Coop's a busy guy these days...

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) I don't expect too many major changes. In terms of the lineup, the only change I see is bringing in a replacement for Pods. He's going to get more expensive and he just isn't worth it. I have no idea where our replacement will come from, Kenny will probably have to get creative with a trade. It'd be pretty hard to get a major upgrade elsewhere (well, outside of maybe center, but Anderson is fine). As for starting pitching, Freddy is probably going to get dealt in the off-season. He's starting to slide and only has one year left. I don't like his chances of getting back to his old self. I don't see us giving up on Vazquez just yet. McCarthy gets the open spot in the rotation. I really don't see us signing a FA. Our payroll is already pretty high, and 4 of our other 5 starters are going to be making around $10 mil. The bullpen appears to be pretty much set. The only move there might be adding a Politte or Hermanson-like cheap reliever for middle relief. In terms of replacing Pods, how do you feel about Mack starting everyday and playing LF and leading off?
-
out of curiousity, does Haeger fit into our 2007 rotation plans at all? If so, dumping Vazquez and Freddy might be a reality. My other concern about 2007 is Contreras's age finally catching up to him.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 09:13 AM) Well, God does deserve the blame, because He created Vazquez, Mackowiak, Ozzie, Buerhle, Cotts, and everyone else that Soxtalk has pissed on this year. BLAME GOD!!!! ....although He, in His wisdom and grace, has ALSO created The Savior, Brandon H. McCarthy!!!!! /blasphemes

in my mind, the right thing for Vazquez to say would be "Trade me to the NL!"

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 05:58 PM) Realism? There's nobody out there we can realistically get (starting pitching wise) that's better than what we have right now. yes, but if we don't replace 4 pitchers with ERAs over 4.8 that means KW and Ozzie value something other than winning..
-
this is a tough one for Bobby, he has pitched 3 consecutive games, afterall.
-
QUOTE(CYGarland @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 02:18 PM) Other than Javy, KW looks like a genius unfortunately, that's a big "other than" considering: 1) we traded Duque, Viz, and Young for him 2) he's expensive 3) he's keeping Brandon out of the rotation

QUOTE(tealeafreaderii @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 02:15 PM) fair enough... No doubt he deflates the fans... but I think the players are made of tougher stuff. I love the avatar! "Some Days You Just Can't Get Rid of a Bomb"

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 01:47 PM) Yanks won....back to 2nd place if we lose. we're already in 2nd.

any chance this guy could be our next 20 game loser?

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 01:27 PM) BTW - Neal Cotts is slowly turning into an unreliable arm out of the pen. I think you mean "quickly"

maybe the ump does us a favor and throws Javy out?
