I'm not more or less optimistic about their chances after what Hahn said. I just hate the whole "progress cause we're at the table" crap they've said a few times of late.

There was always going to be a meltdown if they didn't get one of the two after the optimism they expressed at the Winter Meetings. Considering they've since added Jay and Alonso and the Yankees went after someone else, it will be incredibly ugly.

Yep, it's an infuriating comment. It doesn't mean much now, but they better not say something like that if the guys go elsewhere. This isn't college recruiting where you're a MAC team trying to get into the top 5 for a 5 star recruit. This is a money issue where every team has the same opportunity.

When Heyman tweeted last week that a mystery team had the highest bid for Manny but it wasn't a preferred location, the Padres seemed like the easy choice.

I don't doubt it's that high, but no one knows what's being offered.

I don't see why it's that hard to believe. Say the Padres were looking at Moustakas for like 12 mil a year, but knew he was waiting to pick a team after Manny signed. If they see that Manny is only being offered 25 mil a year, is it that hard to believe they wouldn't potentially shift their focus (given their minimal payroll and aggressive GM)?

And this is why you don't mess around and get the deal done before other teams jump in. Let's just hope the Sox didn't get too cute with their negotiations.
