QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 5, 2013 -> 08:15 PM) Otherwise, play the guys you have the rest of the way. You guys want to develop this cheap young talent, but then guys like Flowers, Viciedo, and Beckham struggle out of the gates like most players do (just ask the Royals), and then you declare the position open and unfilled. How is Beckham comparable? He's been given so much rope by the Sox (and this forum). I get the Flowers comment though, and I do agree he needs a whole year to prove what he can do.

So balta my man, what do you think they should do? I don't mean that sarcastically.

QUOTE (Baron @ May 5, 2013 -> 08:09 PM) So that means dont try? It would take something going very wrong for Detroit for them not to be the favorite in the division the next few years. I said it the other day, but it's the best team in the AL Central the Sox have had to contend with since the Thome/Manny Indians. The whole rebuilding process would be different if the Sox were 1 or 2 players on offense away from being a powerhouse, but who can you really pencil into the starting lineup with confidence for the 2015 season? There currently are no sure-fire offensive players in the organization for the future.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 5, 2013 -> 08:08 PM) Don't you think this division has gotten better? at least KC and DET? Cleveland's offense is better, in my opinion.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2013 -> 08:07 PM) We're dropping about $50M in payroll. CF is covered. One of 1B/LF will be filled by Viciedo. 2B can be handled by Keppinger or Beckham and we have Sanchez in the minor leagues. The book is out on Flowers, but we will have money to fill that position. I'll be pleasantly surprised if they keep De Aza in CF after this season. If anything, they'd move him to LF and put Viciedo at 1b/DH with Dunn.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 5, 2013 -> 08:04 PM) So, if a team needing offense adds 2 or 3 offensive parts when they already have a solid pitching staff, they can become competitive pretty quickly? Yes, but where are these resources going to come next year to fill the 1B, CF, 2B, C spots? It seems inevitable the attendance is going to be horrible this year unless a drastic turnaround takes place.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 5, 2013 -> 08:02 PM) do we have a choice? Exactly, something has to be done, because staying status quo (like they did this offseason) puts you in baseball hell.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2013 -> 08:01 PM) I would trade Peavy only for exciting MLB talent and only if we're definitely out of the race So that means you think they can contend next year with Peavy on the roster?

QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:59 PM) Nobody would have said this about the Royals/Sox last year and they aren't much different from last year. James Shields, Ervin Santana, Wade Davis Not much different? Come on, they added 3 starting pitchers to a team that everyone used to say "their offense is really good, if only they could add starting pitching". They did it, and they're a much more balanced team now.

QUOTE (Baron @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:59 PM) So lets suck for the foreseeable future. God I just hope management doesnt have your attitude. If you're going to suck next year with or without Peavy, then you get what you can for him at the deadline. There was an article today by Nick Carfardo saying how intriguing he'd be to teams in contention.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:57 PM) Hell, we already have a borderline elite pitching staff right now. It might very well be "elite" if people could catch the ball. Yeah, the pitching is fine with the White Sox, but it's likely going to have to be used to acquire difference makers on offense with the gigantic holes this organization has heading into next year.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:57 PM) Up for a decade of losing? Question is, what has to happen for Sox to even contend the next few years with the likes of Detroit and KC? Like it or not, there's just a huge talent gap from Detroit-KC-White Sox.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:56 PM) The Royals are a nice case study too since they are chock full of perennial all-stars that they've acquired due to high draft picks Yet two of their best players were acquired in the Greinke deal.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) Elite pitching can be had without being as bad as the Cubs And how is that? Trading from one of the three worst farm systems in all of baseball?

QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:53 PM) Last year's team was never above .500 until May 24 and they were perfectly healthy. I'm not ready for the tear down just yet The AL Central is also way better this year and last year's team never had the injury issues this team has.

For those saying there's no benefit in being bad, do you really think attendance would be that different if the Sox lose 90 games compared to 100? Hell, Reinsdorf gets paid for 1.5 million in attendance no matter what.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:52 PM) There's no benefit in playing badly. Ever. Did you watch Mark Appel pitch the other day? There's absolutely no shame in being the worst if you're going to have a bad year where nothing goes your way.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:51 PM) You guys won't be saying that when they have to cut the payroll by 20% a year the next 2 years. Does it matter now? This is the worst roster we've seen in decades. We all knew the rebuilding was coming. Just have to hope Peavy gets healthy so we can deal him.

Well, Keppinger does have more errors today than walks and homers combined on the entire season.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:44 PM) yup You could see it happening a few weeks ago at the Cell when the wind was costing him homers. He seemed to try even harder to overpower the wind, causing him to miss making solid contact on any pitch that wasn't on the inner half.
