  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 6, 2012 -> 03:38 PM) But that's kind of accepting the same type of mentality that we don't have the patience to wait on 99.8% of the players we draft to develop. We've never had a Gooden, Strawberry or Harper that was ready to dominate from the get-go. Of course, in my mind, there's a difference between Ryan Sweeney and Morel. Sweeney has/had higher upside, we just didn't have nearly enough time to wait for the strength/power to come into his game. But he always had that pretty swing, the talent and ability was there at least. And maybe he'll never be anything more than a lesser version of Mark Grace but in RF, but he's definitely playing a major role on the Red Sox and carrying a 933 OPS through regular play. We traded Ryan Sweeney when he was still just 22 years old. Brent Morel is already 25. We gave up on Daniel Hudson after 3 major league starts at about the same age. You can't keep sacrificing the long-term in order to leverage short-term results or it will catch up to you, in the perfect storm of diminishing payroll, overpaid veterans in their 30's and not enough talent in the farm system simultaneously. KW and company have done a good job of being proactive in trading some of their young player if they feel the player is never going to live up to their potential. It's pretty obvious they had concerns about Sweeney developing power, Olivo struggling to call a game, etc. I have no problem with selling high on young players, especially in a system that has really struggled to develop home-grown offensive players. This is also why it stinks that our minor league system is so bad now, as it gives Kenny a lot fewer bullets to use to obtain Major League pieces.
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 6, 2012 -> 02:30 PM) Not to mention it took McCarthy 5 years before he finally put it together Yep, just like with Gio, it's pretty far-fetched to think that KW would have waited long enough for McCarthy to turn into a solid MLB pitcher. I remember watching Gio in his first year in Oakland, and it wasn't pretty at all.
  3. QUOTE (flavum @ May 6, 2012 -> 02:53 AM) Complete game for Buehrle. Great first month for him in a Marlins uniform. Great is too strong a word for how he's been. He feasted off of some of the worst offenses in the NL so far. There's no question he'll be a low 3 ERA guy in the NL this year, IMO.
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ May 6, 2012 -> 02:22 AM) Hector has decent secondary pitches but by and large hasn't located them out of the bullpen. That one outing they were for s*** in the zone and it was clear that he was trying to ease them over the plate, giving them away. This is the type of thing lifetime starters deal with when going to the bullpen - short warmup, no mulligan first inning to "find" all your pitches, etc. Yep, he has no confidence in his secondary stuff now. Seems especially obvious after Cespedes crushed his screwball. Earlier in the year, he threw some nice curveballs to lefties.
  5. Please be the beginning of Reed era
  6. Ventura has been very underwhelming
  7. So basically Ventura is saying he thinks Escobar has a better chance than Viciedo?
  8. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ May 5, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) For sure. I wonder if Chris Sale is about to be traded for a young bat. Should have done that a week ago. No one would trade for him right now.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 5, 2012 -> 09:32 PM) But it was a sprained ankle not anything with the arm or elbow or shoulder. Its a move I would have applauded 10 times out of 10 times. KW has sucked, but I will never blame him for that trade. There were some lingering questions about his health from the previous season, IIRC.
  10. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 5, 2012 -> 10:30 PM) It would be too early if he was making the major league minimum, but he's not. I don't see him coming around, either. We have a major league team and we treat it like a farm team waiting for guys to come around. We really don't have a competitive team this year with Axelrod being placed into the rotation. The sooner you come to realize that, the easier it is to accept. Hope for Beckham and Viciedo to prove they can actually start in the majors...and that's about the only reason to watch anymore.
  11. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 5, 2012 -> 10:27 PM) Morel and Vicedo are both bad. Vicedo was a waste of time and money. And he doesn't deserve a nickname like tank, either. Way, way too early to tell with Viciedo. Viciedo at least swings hard in case he makes contact. Every swing by Morel looks like an 0-2 protect swing. However, Viciedo needs to avoid falling into Josh Fields territory where he can't cover the fastball. Again, it wouldn't be in the worst interest of Sox fans if Morel hits .150 this year in the majors. If it means they go out and find a new 3B this offseason, that would be the best possible solution.
  12. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 5, 2012 -> 10:25 PM) One good month in the majors Which makes sense, because I'm sure some of those quality ABs were against minor league call-ups.
  13. QUOTE (Baron @ May 5, 2012 -> 10:24 PM) Hahaha Morel is a joke He looks like a pitcher at the plate. The 0-1 swing was comical. He looks so overmatched, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's sent down after the road trip.
  14. Way to shorten up your swing to make contact Dayan...yikes
  15. Viciedo just cannot hit fastballs it seems.
  16. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 5, 2012 -> 10:20 PM) I like Matty V, but the old guy whose name escapes me for some reason is awful. McCarver is brutal, of course. Can Verlander just be a Fox announcer on his off days? He was great during that interview.
  17. Sox had three full counts that inning, and they chased two "Ball 4" pitches and took Strike 3
  18. De Aza 0-6 with 5 K in this series.
  19. QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ May 5, 2012 -> 09:54 PM) Yeah...I love the guy who is finally earning some of the money that he has stolen from this organization over the past couple of seasons. We surely could have used this Peavy the last couple of seasons more than this one. It will be interesting if Peavy signs with the Cubs this offseason.
  20. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 5, 2012 -> 08:51 PM) I still think we should dump his salary. I always liked his attitude. I also said no way Robin could take him out of the game before they scored the third run. He's a bulldog. If Sox had all Peavy mentalities they'd win. No greg, if the Sox all had Peavy's above average ability, they'd win. Morel could be the most grindy player ever, but if he continues to pull his head off the ball, he's going to suck.
  21. QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2012 -> 09:48 PM) I actually wouldn't mind that unless the White Sox know something about his defense/state of conditioning that I don't know. Careful, they might make him a closer
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 5, 2012 -> 09:48 PM) Poor Jake. Shoulda had a win last night. Pitiful. I love that guy. Funny, I recall you hating him last year and saying he was one of the reasons Ozzie was gone.
  23. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 5, 2012 -> 09:47 PM) Why not? I wouldn't be against it if the organization determines Morel isn't a MLB caliber starting corner infielder. Especially if they want to get Mitchell into the outfield mix in a year or so, it would open up an outfield spot. However, I fully expect balta to hate me for this entire post:)
