  1. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 02:40 AM) 1.The Sox were willing to spend to get a player they have apparently wanted for quite some time now. 2.Rios will fill a hole that has been glaring since Rowand left. 3.They gave up nothing to get him. 4.They have once again avoided getting into a bidding war with another team during free agency. So he is mildly overpaid(and that can be argued, and has by many). Whats the problem? Yep, this is a great move, I honestly believe. When I first heard of this last week, I was skeptical. However, there's a lot of positives to this move and we're not talking about Soriano money for Rios. It's a lot of money, but not something that should handicap your organization for a few years.
  2. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 02:37 AM) Looks fair to me. I thought it was foul
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:36 AM) That was in the past. I know you might think the economy is fine now, but its really not. There aren't a lot of teams that will be throwing around money this offseason for crap. This guy is signed for 5 years at $12 million. Its more than he would get on the market. The Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox and Cubs won't be looking for high priced OF. Who else would be paying him? Cardinals are going to have money to spend, according to their broadcasters tonight. Their attendance is going to be nearly 500k more than they expected.
  4. Please be fair, please be fair!
  5. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:28 AM) He did say that Pods is not a true center fielder. That's fantastic news
  6. Any other tidbits from KW's interview? I'd love to know where they plan on having Rios bat. If we put him in the 6-7 range, at least it would give us some more speed.
  7. I would think KW is being cautious not to throw Dye/Pods/Quentin under the bus by saying how much of an upgrade Rios is defensively.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 02:16 AM) Who do you suppose he is talking about? Jose Contreras. The Sox think he's not giving it 100 pct, and as soon as they can, they will remove him from the rotation.
  9. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:30 AM) In a perfect world, Mitchell will make it to Birmingham next year. Viciedo and Danks would be best served playing a whole year in Charlotte next year. This is assuming, of course, that Danks picks it up again, and doesn't need to repeat AA. Flowers, however, should be ready to compete for a job come spring training. Flowers absolutely needs to be platooning with AJP next year.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:26 AM) And, unlike playing the FA market...we didn't have to outbid anyone...and we didn't have to lose a draft pick. That's the biggest thing, and something I would cringe at whenever people would say we'd have money to spend in the FA market. The White Sox don't outbid teams for the big free agents (and you can't blame them). The person most disappointed today has to be Chone's agent.
  11. QUOTE (BFirebird @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 12:23 AM) Hmm. Interesting. Would trading him make John Danks more difficult to re-sign? KW can't worry about that, especially if it frees up a spot for Danks to play when he would be blocked.
  12. Does this make Jor Danks trade bait this offseason?
  13. QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 12:19 AM) Wait. So JP wouldn't make a deal when he could have gotten talent for him, but would then dump him for nothing? I'm sure KW said he'd have to pay some of his salary.
  14. Is it 5 years 60 mil remaining or 6 years 60 mil?
  15. QUOTE (Tex @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:15 AM) Yeah, Frank really wanted to stay too. And he would have stayed, but KW and the Sox didn't want him back in 2006. KW will decide which one he wants back, Dye or Thome, and it shouldn't be hard to keep them around for another year or two.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 12:11 AM) I think it means at least one of Dye/Thome is gone and that Jenks will be traded in the off-season. No way will the Sox be paying a closer massive bucks, imo. And you know I'll be thrilled when we trade Jenks. Cowley was saying earlier today that there's no way Dye doesn't return to the Sox next year, as he really wants to be here. However, I think today's move might have changed that.
  17. No one is going to get "benched" if Ozzie handles this correctly.
  18. I like the move, as even if it means the end of Dye next season, we will have improved our outfield defense. We just got Peavy and Rios for at least the next 3 seasons without giving up any of our top 4 prospects. The biggest sign to me this was a good deal? It's the fact that if the Cubs did this, we would have been b****ing about how lame it is to acquire a player this way.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 9, 2009 -> 02:15 AM) Bob might as well hit the first batter to get that over with. Bench clearing brawl in the ninth? That would be great...get Jenks suspended for 5 games. Hawk needs to get over it. Lewis wasn't trying to hit Pods, he was just overthrowing his cutter way too much.
  20. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Aug 9, 2009 -> 03:10 AM) Stoney and Hawks said it was a good call, but it looked to me like he was not THAT far inside the line...looked like he just ran straight up the line to me. Since he was trying to beat the throw there was no need to circle the base and thus take the wide turn at first. I thought the call was a WTH, but if Stoney thinks it good, Ill go with that. He was outside the line and got hit by the throw. It was an obvious call.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2009 -> 02:08 AM) Gameday has him called out on "Batters interference". That doesn't sound like a great bunt? Ran inside the foul line, and throw hit him. It was a sensational bunt.
  22. Does Ozzie ever call for a hit-and-run with Beckham at the plate? That better be the last time we ever see him bunt in a Sox uniform (even though he's a great bunter).
