QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 07:43 PM) It's not surprising in the least. I have been consistent, let's wait until we see what happens before we start condemning one way or the other. How about you? I'm still waiting to see what happens, but I think KW has to be very careful what he says in the press. Ozzie's comments about how the same people cheering for Buehrle were the ones booing him last year were pathetic. QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 07:43 PM) It's not surprising in the least. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 07:20 PM) You know I'm starting to think there's something to this. In that, it seems like KW/Buehrle genuinely like each other and they almost both know he's gonna stay, but perhaps they're using the media to negotiate by floating their terms out there. Also known as a "stalking horse" or "trial balloon." Just a theory. But it all does seem a bit odd, doesn't it? I think it's the opposite, and they both know they're not going to get a deal done, so they're making it very public as to what their position is on the important issue. Is it bad that I agree with every thing Marrioti said in his article today? Yes, it's time for the Sox front office to catch up to the 21st century way of making deals.

Over/under on Fields K's tonight is 2.5

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) You could lose a lot of potential free agents if that is the case. If other players see that you gave a full no-trade clause and you are not going to give it to them (such as Ichiro) then they would most likely feel like you think they are not as good as that player. That player will then go somewhere else where he feels more wanted. If they do give a full no trade to Mark then they will potentially have to give it to every big free agent they go after, or most likely lose out on getting the big free agent. That is a big risk to take. Since when have we actually tried to acquire prime time free agents?

According to KW, he's waiting to get the Buehrle situation resolved before making any other moves. So basically, the worst case scenario would be to have to trade Buehrle for a less than tremendous package, and then have to keep Contreras and his contract. They really need to get this Buehrle situation resolved in the next 10 days though. I don't think the Mets will ever be as desperate for pitching as they are now.

Now, I understand why the Sox don't want to give a full NTC, as then they'd have to deal with other players trying to obtain that right during negotiations. However, if Buehrle is willing to take such a discount to play for the squad and have a NTC, then couldn't they use that as a precedent when negotiating with someone like Garland? You know, if you're willing to give up some money and years, then we can give you an option like a NTC? I know this line of thinking is probably pointless, as I don't believe that the Sox have no intentions of trying to deal him in the next few years, even if they do re-sign him. QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 01:04 PM) Maybe all these leaks are just a show. Maybe MB and KW are letting the contract at these numbers slip out because they want other teams to think that signing MB will come cheap if they trade for him. Then a team will be willing to give up a little more for MB. After the season he then chnages his mind and wants more money and signs with the Sox for a deal that has just been negotiated. I don't believe a single comment I read yesterday by either KW or Buehrle.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 05:29 AM) Is Owens REALLY getting called back up again? Oh god, this is almost laughable. Yep, Ozzie told KW he wants him with the big league team over Sweeney due to his lead off experience. Not to start WWIII, but maybe this will show people that yes, Ozzie does have some say over who's on the big league club.

That Roberts at-bat was an example of why he's not as effective without his big fastball. Guys can look for that cut slider he throws, and just fight off the fastball. His curve also is nowhere near as sharp as it was, and ends up being high and out of the zone a lot.

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 03:29 AM) Steve Phillips on BBTN said this evening that KW thinks they can work out a deal with Buerhle. Contreras seems likely to be traded. Nice to know Phillips can read an article and make it sound like his own insight.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 03:27 AM) It's much easier for a 90 win team to attract quality free agents than a 56 win team to do so. You're not going to attract quality free agents unless you give them some sort of NTC. I really am puzzled as to how the Sox are expecting to add talent to the organization besides for trying to develop young guys.

QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 03:18 AM) Aren't you the one who wanted him to come in for a tie game earlier this year and blamed Guillen for not doing it? You are tough to follow. Yesterday you wanted the Sox to give Buehrle the no trade, today you say it doesn't matter, that you don't care and maybe they'll be a better team without him. You bring him in when it's between him and Aardsma with a great fastball hitter up with the bases loaded. He's the best we have in that situation....as sad as that is. Much like DAllen, I'm worried that a 93 mph Jenks just won't cut it over the course of the year. And as for Buehrle, I want them to give him the NTC because I really think that hardly ever comes into play. However, reading KW today say that he can't do it because of future free agents/extensions, I understand where he's coming from. I'm of the belief that no matter what they do with Buehrle, they're going to suck the next two years. If they re-sign him, that's great. The fans will be happy and we won't have to hear idiots claiming they should boycott. If they don't sign him, then I'll get excited about the prospects we get in return and the available money we'll have this offseason.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 03:13 AM) Probably. This loss just is devastating. Devastating to what? Our uphill battle to get to .500 before end of the year? We have a bad lineup and terrible bullpen....please tell me Greg that you didn't start thinking this team was going to make up 11 games on Detroit and Cleveland?
-
QUOTE(Phil McKrevice @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 03:12 AM) No way Sox recover from this loss. What a great way to send off Buehrle. Yep, when this season is over, we're going to look back at tonight as the turning point of the season.
-
QUOTE(greg775 @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 03:10 AM) If Buckvich isn't sent down tonight, KW should be fired. He cannot pitch at this level. If the Sox keep any Royals rejects on the roster, again KW should be fired. My gawd. Let tonight's game be the one that drains the Cell of fans the rest of the season. WOW! What a disgrace. I'll continue to say that's an absolutely idiotic thing to say.
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 03:08 AM) If he were consistently at 93-95 mph since 2005 it'd be different. But considering his past injury history and a continuous drop in velocity season to season (not to mention his second half struggles last year), I just can't assume it'll suddenly stop entering 2008. And the fact that he can't even be relied on to go 2 innings or in a tie game.
-
What a pathetic team. The next 48 hours aren't going to be fun for this organization. If anything, maybe blowing this game was a positive, as people won't believe this team is turning the corner. I wonder if Ozzie will blame Fields.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 02:59 AM) He is represented by Boras, which is why the Sox probably won't even talk to Patterson but I'd still love for it to happen. Some team will give him the chance to start every day.
-
Well, good thing we pitched to Millar with an open base.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 02:54 AM) The confrontation with Bagwell in the WS was epic. He was just throwing gas. It's the closest thing you'll ever see to a Ricky Vaughn impersonation from the last batter in Major League.
-
Haha...good job pitching to Millar with the open base. Bobby Jenks has nothing these days.
-
Such a pathetic team....how come no one has ever been called out for how poorly we hold runners on?
-
It's sad to see Jenks turn into a slider/curve pitcher now. If you go back and watch the 2005 DVD, it's a completely different pitcher.
-
Orioles gave Jenks a lot of problems last year.
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 02:43 AM) I haven't seen anyone overrate Reyes in more than a year. And that lasted about a week following his one-hitter against the Sox. Trust me, just about every trade proposal involving the Cards on this site has Reyes involved.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 02:44 AM) According to KW, they are going to sign him, thats the most recent report. I think they announce Mark is signed tomorrow. Is that the article on chicagosports right now?
