According to Jesse Rogers, Ken Griffey Jr. is the starting CF with Pauly heading to the bench.

QUOTE (almagest @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 10:59 AM) Griffey had an OPS above .900 for the month of July. He's on a sustained hitting streak. There's a good chance going to a contender might revitalize him further. He's a first ballot hall-of-famer. Konerko isn't doing ANYTHING, and hasn't for the whole season. Our pitching isn't lights-out as it was at the start of the year, so we could use more offense. Richar and Masset aren't very good, and probably won't contribute anything worthwhile in Cincinnati, either. We don't pay anything, and Griffey probably brings back two type-B picks at the end of the year. I don't see much worth complaining about with this move, just wondering where Griffey will play. I doubt the Sox get any sort of compensation for Griffey at season's end. They won't risk offering arbitration to a 39 year old who made $12M this year and would only bring in a sandwich pick anyway.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 10:45 AM) This is exciting. We gave up practically nothing. Richar is out with the emergence of Alexei. If anything it adds new life and energy to the team with a Hall of Famer coming in. I do have my concerns with Griff in CF but hopefully he can prove me wrong. He is still very athletic for his age. This may have been brought up, but do we still have him under contract for next year? If so, I see Thome gawn. The Sox hold a rather large team option for next year on Griffey. Jim Thome is easily a better bet than Griffey to produce and stay healthy next year, he'll also be much cheaper. The Griffey deal really shouldn't effect Jim in any way.

This is going to be pretty cool.

QUOTE (quickman @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 10:25 AM) this is a joke right? Who the hell cares? Your worried about a number? What the f*** does it matter to you? Ignore it if it bothers you so damn much. Let them have their fun.
-
A LARGE portion of Griffey's deal with the Reds is deferred from '09 through '26 so it's definitely a good thing that the Reds are picking up the tab.

Danny Richar is not f***ing insignificant!

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:46 AM) The huge problem with trading Cabrera today is the White Sox would be short on a day they play Minnesota. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out. It still makes no sense. I don't understand why the White Sox would assume Griffey's contract even if it meant getting a mediocre reliever for next to nothing. Weathers or Affeld aren't worth taking on Griffey's money if that is what is happening. I don't think that's what's happening at all. IMO Kenny wants Griffey because Kenny thinks Griffey is good. Yes, it sounds strange but KW probably just thinks Griffey will play well for a contender over the final 2 months of the season.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:43 AM) f*** that, I'm going back to bed. I'm with you, when I awake in 2 hours I expect some f***ing news. Waking up to Griffeytalk at 7 AM is an awful way to start your morning, throws your head in a tizzy.
-
Do you really want to dick around with Dye defensively while he's kicking ass at the plate? Also, he's been outstanding in RF this year.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:34 AM) I'd still rather have a few more singles from that slot since the odds of people on base are probably higher with CQ, Dye and Thome hitting in front. If that slot draws a walk who's going to knock him in? Toby Hall? The .314 hitting Cuban in the 7th/8th slot?
-
One thing I do like is Griffey will be playing for a contender again. He's the kind of guy who steps it up when his team is actually playing for something. I fully expect Griff the finish off the season with a couple of good months at the plate, his defense in CF (if that's where he'll be playing) is another story, however.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:25 AM) Jr hitting 15 points higher in average. I'd rather have my #6/7 hitter getting hits than walking. The difference between .230 and .245 is a few singles. Hardly noticeable over the course of 4 months.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:20 AM) Jr's offensive stats are better. By 30 f***ing points in OPS and 5 points in OPS+. WOW
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) Why is everyone in love with Swisher? He has been awful. If anything OC has been playing much better than Swish this season. You mean the same Nick Swisher who has been roughly equal to Ken Griffey Jr. at the plate this season?
-
How do you improve one of the worst defenses in baseball? Why stick a 38 year old designated hitter in centerfield, that how!
-
QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) Is it just me or is Weathers traded every year at the deadline? He is because he f***ing blows. Nick Masset might be a better reliever than David Weathers at this point.
-
David Weathers and his 1.555 WHIP can stay the f*** away from Chicago.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:40 AM) He obviously would get something for Swisher. Street + something else perhaps. Getting Griffey and not moving one of the others makes zero sense, unless of course, Griffey gets hurt in a few days. Yeah but trading Swisher at his lowest value for a setup guy then replacing Swish with a 38 year old corner OF makes even less sense.

From Rosenthal's article on FSN.com:
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:26 AM) thats really, really doubtful...the Sox wouldn't pick up Griffey only to trade him when he has pretty much no value as it is And what team wants Griffey but can't get a deal done without involving the White Sox? What could the Sox possibly have that another team couldn't provide?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:21 AM) I don't think there is any question about it. I think if Griffey accepts one of Konerko, Dye,Swisher or Thome either has a major physical problem or is going to get traded, and Swisher seems to me to perhaps be the guy. I don't think you trade a versatile young player like Swisher who's under contract through 2012 and replace him with a 38 year old rent-a-player. You're not going to get equal value back for Swisher at this point.
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:20 AM) It all depends on what you get in return. Quentin for Pojols (not likely) wouldn't be "out of the question" or Dye for Matt Holliday (equally unlikely) would not be "dumb". Every piece is tradable for the right price. I wouldn't trade Dye straight up for Matt Holliday.
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:09 AM) Stoney thinks maybe Swisher to Oakland for Street? (all speculation on his part, no inside info). I would puke if that happened. Trading 3/5 of your top prospects for a set-up man. UGH. Assuming he really did say that; for a supposed genius he really does come up with a lot of stupid ideas. Swisher for Street makes no sense no matter how you slice it.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 07:50 AM) I was thinking more like Cordero or Bill Bray Cordero's contract is hella scary. No reason to pick up Griffey's salary if you're acquiring a setup man (for us anyway) who makes $12M per year over the next 3 years.
