More detailed article on the KW/Ozzie/PK meeting

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 01:16 AM) I feel the opposite way. I'd be trying to deal Dye ASAP while holding out hope that you can resign Buehrle (unless someone puts a ridiculously good offer on the table) and eventually trade Contreras. These are my thoughts almost exactly. Dye needs to be traded probably by the end of the month at the latest but with Buehrle you can wait until mid to late July if need be with the hope of getting some sort of contract extension hammered out, I don't see Buehrle's trade value taking much of a hit over the next month or so. No matter what though Contreras needs to go sometime between now and April 1st of '08. -
The Sox have 10 players under guaranteed contracts for next season which tallies about $64M total. Subtract Contreras at $10 and you're at $54, add Buehrle and you're back up to about $70M with 15 spots to fill and about $25-$30M to spend.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 01:03 AM) The 'big deal' here concerns the value of any current player on the trade market. With Dye, Williams can risk keeping him around until the All-Star break. His value is quite low, and even if he doesn't improve we can always hold onto him and anticipate Type-A compensation. With Buehrle, however, three starts leading up to the All-Star break may have a transverse effect if he struggles. Receiving draft picks for Mark doesn't quite seem like an attractive option considering his current value. This 2007 White Sox club isn't winning anything. Why exactly should they be given an additional two weeks when they've had three months to prove themselves. Suggesting Konerko notices something from the team that fans don't is ridiculous as well. Especially when it involves onfield performance. Right now Dye is probably the best and least expensive bat on the market since Krivsky is asking for like 8 major league players in exchange for Adam Dunn. In 3-4 weeks Dunn's price could have dropped and be dealt off to LA for some young talent taking away a possible suitor for Dye. The Diamondbacks fall out of the race along with the Twins so Arizona is no longer interested in Jermaine and the Twins decide to sell off Hunter to the Padres for whatever the f*** they offer up, who knows. So it's July 23rd and KW is left with Jermaine Dye on his roster and no real obvious suitors for him. At least at the moment you know you control the market with no other bats available and 3 division rivals vying for the services of Jermaine Dye, a few weeks from now and everything could change. -
5 years, $75M. Done deal.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:53 AM) You could have asked the same question about the 2005 team and go player by player against a few other teams and no one would have picked the White Sox. Boston, Anaheim, NY... player vs. player it didn't match up good for the White Sox. You really can't compare teams that way in such a huge team sport like baseball. Actually the Sox compared very well to the opposition in '05, the Sox bullpen was far superior to that of the Yankees and Red Sox, same goes for the starting rotation as well. The White Sox had a more potent lineup than that of the Angels in to go along with a better rotation.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:36 AM) Do you think he's the same guy he was in Milwaukee? In 2005? Hell, he isn't as "good" as he was last year. Scott Podsednik has gone 346 plate appearances without a triple and now in 11 games against s***ty minor leaguers has stolen a grand total of 2 bases while being caught once. Before getting injured he stole 3 and was thrown out twice by the worst catcher in baseball. Just some fun facts.

QUOTE(diegotony06 @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:34 AM) I'm just hoping that they get on some kind of run and make this thing interesting. I believe if the offense keeps scoring like it has the last few games, this team can turn it around in a hurry. For some reason I just think this team is gonna go on a big run, and get right back in this race. Maybe I am wrong, but even if they don't by the all star break, maybe they will play well enough to increase the value of some of the players they are looking to trade. Maybe Dye, Buerhle and Iguchi and whoever else can up their trade value in these 19 games before the break. If the Sox go on any kind of run, it won't matter what any of the pending free agent's trade value is at come the deadline because KW will be buying rather than selling which will only hurt this team for the immediate future (say 2008.) If you look at the Sox' bullpen, outfield and left side of the infield and think they can catch 2 outstanding ballclubs in Cleveland and Detroit then you're completely delusional. At this point how many players on the Sox' 25 man roster are superior to their counterparts on those of the Tigers and Indians?

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:33 AM) I know 71 - I wasn't disagreeing with you guys at all. Being fans we have a luxury of looking at it more realistically. I believe it would be horribly tough to give up and say die if you have even the slightest chance of winning if this is what you do for a living. He asked Paulie in 2005 as well. Paulie said they could win the world series with what they have. He was right. Well sometimes as a GM you just have to bite the bullet, realize you put together an incredibly flawed roster and begin retooling for next season and the future. Teams do it every season, some sooner than others and others go about it better than some. KW needs to put his ego aside for a second and realize this team just isn't good enough to hang with Detroit and Cleveland. Anyone who compares the 3 rosters and thinks the Sox are the superior team is kidding themselves. It's going to be tough for KW to do but his job and the future of this franchise depends on what kind of talent he's able to bring in over the next month and a half in exchange for pending free agents and any other unnecessary pieces that remain on the roster after the main guys have been dealt. If Kenny goes for it this season he'll be unemployed by the end of '08. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:33 AM) I know 71 - I wasn't disagreeing with you guys at all. Paulie said they could win the world series with what they have. He was right. So he asked Konerko again at the break last year and he was dead wrong and just because he loves him so he asked Pauly during ST this season and once again Konerko provided a faulty prediction. So Konerko's down to a 1-2 record, perhaps asking him a 4th time is pushing it just a bit. -

QUOTE(Reddy @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:22 AM) *cough* houston '05 *cough* atlanta 05 and 06 not that i think it's LIKELY.... but weird things have happened... The Braves didn't make the playoffs last season and were a mere 4 games out of 1st place and 4 games over .500 in an incredibly weak NL East on June 19th 2005. Comparing the NL East/Central/West of 2 years ago to the AL Central of today is just asinine. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:23 AM) Didn't he ask Konerko and Thome about the makeup of the club in ST too? That could just be faulty memory. He did. This is a pretty frightening trend. -

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:16 AM) I thought you guys were referring to when KW asked Konerko in 2005 and Konerko said that they had the team to win the World Series. I didn't know he and Dye were asked again last year. Konerko, Dye and Pierzynski were asked around the break last season what the team needed for the second half in order to win it all, of course the players said they didn't need anything and hence KW made no real moves to improve the ballclub aside from adding 1 reliever to the fray. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:00 AM) He thinks that the major reason that we have gone into this slump, is because Darin Erstad has not been on this ballclub. Which is pretty f***ing ridiculous seeing as how the Sox were just capping off a 5 game losing streak the day Erstad went down. If the absence of his .318 OBP, less than spectacular defensive play and top notch ass-slapping ability is the reason why the bullpen has decided to go to s*** and why Konerko, Dye, Pierzynski, Crede, Iguchi and Uribe have decided to have one of the worst offensive seasons of their respective careers then something is seriously f***ed up in the psyche of this ballclub. -

The worst thing that could happen to this team right now would be to go 13-6 over the next 19. That would probably send KW into full buying mode coming out of the break despite the fact that the team would probably be about 7-9 games out of the WC race and still under .500. -

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 11:33 PM) Assuming KW meant everything he said in that article, and from the bit I saw on CSN, I'm now rooting for this team to lose until the deadline. Go ahead call me a bad fan. I want a competitive team back on the field as soon as possible, and that isn't going to happen by waiting for the outfield fairies to get back. Oh, you're not alone. -
QUOTE(SoxAce @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 11:38 PM) How in the hell did we score 10 god damn runs? The Marlins don't know how to play defense, Josh Johnson still isn't 100% and BK Kim's major league career might just be over at the ripe old age of 29. If anything I come out of today's game with a bad taste in my mouth rather than a good one. Dye is having leg problems at the absolute wrong time, Jose Contreras appears to be on his way out and the bullpen is still scary bad. It would have been nice if the Sox hitters could drive the ball into the gaps with authority instead they were feasting on some of the most pathetic defensive efforts I've ever witnessed which is something a good team should be able to do but it doesn't get my hopes up about this offense at all.
-
12 of the next 19 games the Sox play are against opponents with a superior record.
-
Who that you know of is even available via trade? If there were some above average defensive player who could provide adequate offensive production I'd be all for replacing Uribe but I really don't think such a player is available. Considering the park the Sox play in and the current state of the pitching staff I think the Sox need an above average defender at short more than they need another bat in the lineup so any replacement for Juan is going to have to be a plus defender.

Is Hawk trying to hype up Jermaine Dye?

I think I might just be in love with Luis Terrero.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 09:42 PM) I just read the Contreras article on chicagosports. I can only hope someone will take him off of our hands. He went from having great stuff to mediocre stuff so quickly. I'm hoping KW can find a team willing to eat the $20M remaining on that deal, I don't even care about the talent we get in return at this point, the $10M freed for next seen is enough for me.

Slight strain in the right quad for JD. s***.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 09:29 PM) but they at least talked as to the speculation of the injury, correct? I mean, you didn't know for sure what it was, but you at least knew it was an injury. I haven't heard Hawk or DJ talk about it at all, but then again I just turned it on in the 4th inning. They haven't said a word. When JD was pulled from the game DJ acted like it was the most natural thing in the world and about an inning ago he simply said "no word yet on Jermaine Dye." He left the field just fine and looked alright heading into the dugout at the end of the inning when he made the 2nd diving grab.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 09:28 PM) I don't have a clue. It's likely that he was but who knows, a trade is at least possible. It's more fun to think a trade has taken place.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) The more time that goes by with out anyword on Dye, the more and more I'm starting to think some deal COULD have happened. I know this is all pretty silly but the Dodgers and Padres are not playing tonight and no one has been removed as of yet from the D-Backs game.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 08:56 PM) Be positive. Maybe he was traded. The fact that DJ is giving NO updates on JD's health is quite suspicious.
