QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:56 PM) Back-to-back plays? You really think he had a legitmate chance to throw Bradley out in that situation? And I guess it's easy to say a catch should've been routine sitting at home watching on the tube. He jumped 2 seconds too early and the ball hit him in the head. I feel fairly confident in saying that was a routine play. I don't really see why it wasn't. The play at the plate looked pretty close to me, Bradley was just rounding 3rd when Pods came up with the ball. It just aired on BBTN.

Remember that conversation this morning about late game defensive replacements? Even an average left fielder makes that catch with his back against the wall. Just because Jenks was s*** and he was s***, he shouldn't be closing games at all right now does not excuse the RIDICULOUS defense of Scott Podsednik. If he makes the grab the game goes to extras with a chance to win it.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:49 PM) Yes, Let's blame Pods over Jenks. There isn't a LF in the game that was gonna throw Bradley out in that situation. And the last play wasn't exactly a 'routine' catch. Bobby lost this game for us. Oh please he should have caught the ball with his back against the wall. He should not have been in the game and he proved in on back to back plays. He has no clue in LF.

Do you really have to say ANYTHING?

QUOTE(Felix @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 08:43 PM) He's merely saying that pre-1980, only 2 people had ever reached it. Since then, 12 others have (soon to be 13 with Pedro). That's a pretty alarming increase, although I do agree with you, it's still a very impressive plateau. Ok, honestly I don't really even give a s*** about career milestones so it's hard to say what does and doesn't impress me. If you look at starters pre 70's strikeouts were never really all that important to them, they were more concerned with just getting hitters out, pitching to contact not to mention the better contact hitters of that time. It has become more of a power game for both the pitchers and the hitters. Considering how hard it is to sustain any sort of success as a pitcher in this pro-hitter era, it's pretty impressive when a pitcher can achieve any milestone. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 08:44 PM) I never said it was unimpressive. Felix has got what I'm saying. Yeah I got it, I'm doing a few things at once here so I'm not really thinking all that much about what I'm reading.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 08:35 PM) Two things: another milestone Thome's after. Kind of interesting. As far as Pedro + 3000 K, It's become less than it was. I still look forward to the day when Pedro does it, I love Pedro, but 3000 Ks just aren't what they used to be. Why? Every pitcher with 3000+ Ks is a hall of famer (except Bert Blyleven) and you have to be insanely dominant for a good stretch of time in order to achieve it. I'm more impressed with 3000 Ks than I am with 3000 hits or 500 HRs.
-
LEFTIES!!!!! Is something wrong with Iguchi or was yesterday just a day off and today he sits because lefties destroy Gaudin?
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 08:22 PM) 3000 Ks. Not the achievement it used to be but still an achievement. 3000 Ks has been done 12 fewer times than 3000 hits so it's still far and away the less frequently achieved of the 2 milestones.

Rod Allen thinks Roberto Alomar might have a shot at the Hall of Fame. Seriously, he worded it that way.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 07:59 PM) fixed Talent wise I'm not sure it's even close. If he doesn't jump into that f***ing wall in right center at the King Dome he'd have passed Aaron by now.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 07:54 PM) Nah, only cool people get these honors. Pedro, Griffey & A-Rod > Thomas & Thome

I think we should start countdown threads for A-Rod and Manny as well, along with Griffey and Sosa 600 threads, Pedro and Biggio 3000 threads and a Glavin 300 thread. COUNTDOWN THREADS FOR ALL!!!

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 07:36 PM) not to defend Ozzie in this situation, because regarding BA, I don't think there is any defense. However, long term, are limited major league at bats - say 250 over the course of a season - more useful in terms of success as opposed to 500 in the minors? Obviously, Anderson's on pace for about 100 ABs, so he should be in AAA regardless of that, but I'm more or less just trying for opinions right now to see if he is theoretically in the right spot right now. If he were being used in a platoon in CF this year I'd have no problem, 250-300 ABs at the major league level will do him good but considering the circumstances I don't see BA getting anywhere near that man at bats unless Erstad or Pods go down with an injury and if that happens then he can be called up at the time of the injury anyway. 1-4 AB a week at the major league level is only going to hurt his offensive progression especially when he could be getting 15-20 a week at Charlotte.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 04:46 PM) Well, as I'm currently not employed by the Sox, I can't say for certain he's the future. Sure, he struggled at the plate, but his defense is way above average and he's shown improvement this spring at the plate and with his approach. Keeping him on the bench may or may not not be the best for his development at this point -- it's arguable. But it's best for the team. That's more relevant to me. And I think it would be a huge mistake to give up on him now. another good reason to have him on the bench He hasn't been used ONCE as a defensive replacement through the first 6 games. That's my point. Ozzie has had ample opportunities to use Anderson late in games and has yet to do it, I don't really see why he would suddenly change his approach a few weeks in. Anderson spent 1 season at AAA and was then platooned for an entire season in the majors, there's no doubt in my mind that he needs ABs. He doesn't have a whole lot of experience beyond AA, he needs to be getting 350+ ABs this year to work on his swing. Maybe I just don't understand how he's supposed to improve at the plate if the only live pitching he's seeing is during BP or in the cages between innings. It's not about giving up on his at all, it's about using Terrero in the 25th man role instead of a player the Sox are counting on for the future. How is swapping Anderson for Terrero going to hurt the team at all? Terrero is an above average defender, he can handle pinch running and then playing an inning in CF once a week while Brian plays everyday at Charlotte.

QUOTE(Capn12 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 01:04 PM) Quick question about last nights game. Why didn't Jenks get credited for a save? The game didn't start until 3 AM here last night, so I didn't get to see it. However many runs you're up on the opponent at the time you enter the game, you need to retire that many batters to earn the save. He was up 3 runs and only got 2 outs.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:51 AM) I think Thornton's age moves him down the list... turning 31 soon. Bobby, regardless of the rumored lost velocity, still gets the job done and is young and has some sexy fat. Absolutely! BTW, AJ... Sisco is currently a Minnesota Twin! It's not Thronton's age that hurts his trade value (he's 6 months older than Mac), it's the fact that he's had only a few successful months as a major league reliever, at this time last year he was considered a complete bust with not much of a future as a big league pitcher.
-
QUOTE(iamshack @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:49 AM) Obviously his arm has not gotten stronger. However, his jumps and routes have, which have led to his improvement. I don't believe I stated that Pods has turned into an all-star defender; I stated he has improved. IMO, even with his strong arm, Dye should be replaced defensively late in games before Podsednik should, barring your "runner on third with less than two out in a tie game" scenario. If the game is close enough you can't be taking a bat like Dye's out of the lineup. With a 3 run lead I could see it but any less you can't be removing one of your best hitters. Using Anderson in CF and moving Erstad to either corner in the 8th/9th inning improves the defense 2 fold.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:48 AM) I just see the market as insane right now, with the steep price the Marlins paid for f***ing Jorge Julio! Petit is nothing special.
-
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:46 AM) Well... I'm not! Which of our relievers could garner interest, or would it only be Mac or Bobby? The ONLY relievers they'd even consider dealing for would be Mac and Bobby, they don't need anymore unproven, inconsistent bullpen arms. Ryan Madson already fills that role.
-
I'm pretty sure the Phillies are looking for a proven bullpen arm, not a young pitcher who s*** the bed in his only experience at the big league level, they have enough of those guys. Unless you're willing to move MacDougal you're not getting anything from Philly.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:36 AM) As much as Podsednik's defensive prowess has been mocked around here, I truly believe he has been better since the later part of last season defensively. I worry more about JD out there in right than I do about Scottie in left. For whatever reason, no one mentions how terrible-looking Dye is out there though... Really? When did his arm get any stronger? Even if you want to debate that his defensive abilities have been better of late, which I don't see at all, I think everyone can agree that he has basically no arm strength to speak of, which late in games can end up hurting a team. Why should a below average defender with no arm be used at all late in games when there's an excellent defender on the bench? As for Dye, he's getting even slower out there, he was running through molasses last season, he's running through quicksand right now.
-
QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:31 AM) Brian's the future CF, I can see no reason to trade him. And I see no reason to have him in Charlotte. How do you even know he's the future? Do you know if he's any good? He had a disappointing season at the plate last year and he's not getting any playing time right now, how do you know what you have in him? How does keeping him on the bench help his development or help with any future personnel decisions in the outfield? Is Luis Terrero not capable of sitting on is ass 6 games a week?

Do you believe Billy Packer?
Kalapse replied to LosMediasBlancas's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(rangercal @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 02:00 AM) even if he did mean it that way... ( who cares) Obviously Packer cares or he wouldn't be lying to cover his ass right now. That's the only thing that bothers me about this situation. He knows he said something he probably shouldn't have and instead of owning up to it like a man he's choosing to cover his ass instead. He wasn't going to face any sort of punishment either way but he chooses to lie anyway. -
I still don't understand why the best defensive outfielder on this team isn't being used as a defensive replacement late in games. They're sticking with a Pods/Erstad/Dye outfield in the 8th and 9th innings instead of taking advantage of his skills. I just don't get it. Pods should NEVER be in LF as late as the 9th, he has no arm and no clue.
