  1. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 01:43 AM) Of course its conjecture, but thats what happens when a play that results in 7 points is blatantly missed. I dont really see how you could argue that OSU getting the ball there would not have changed the game, but Im pretty sure that regardless of wehther or not it changed the outcome, the game would most likely have been played quite differently. Instead of it being 7-7 immediately, OSU dodges a bullet and Illinois remains down. As I said though, you cant complain about it because in the end the blame is with Tressel. oh, i didn't say it wouldn't change the game. there's no question it would. my quarrel is with people speculating how it would have changed the game. to me, that's a stretch, especially since it's mostly buckeye fans theorizing how that single play in the first two minutes of the game was their downfall. let's just ignore what we saw in the other 58 minutes. nothing to see there.
  2. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 01:26 AM) Im not an Illinois fan or OSU fan, but that play changed the game. If OSU gets the ball back at that point it would have entirely changed the game. But, Tressel should be blamed for not calling a time out. Illinois did not rush to the line of scrimmage, the play was replayed on TV prior to the snap, and if he calls a time out they probably review the play and over turn it. i'd be more willing to make excuses for ohio state if they didn't get totally dominated in the fourth quarter of that game and couldn't even get the ball back. all they needed was one stop on numerous third downs when everyone in the stadium knew they were running the ball. they couldn't get one stop, so it's hard to cry about it for them. your thought on what would have happened if dufrene's play is correctly called (it WAS a fumble) is entirely conjecture. i could just as easily say that illinois would have been pissed that it missed an opportunity and completely dominated the game from that point on. there's as much factual basis for that theory as there is for the one that identifies that single play as where things went "wrong" for ohio state.
  3. QUOTE(danman31 @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 07:46 AM) Uhhh no. Zook went 8-5, 8-5, and 7-5. Meyer is 9-3, 13-1, 7-3. 8 games, 1 game, what's the difference? Zook went 16-8 in the SEC, but 1-2 against Florida State, 0-3 against Miami (one of those 3 being a bowl game), and 0-3 in bowls. Yeah, Meyer is 17-7 in the SEC, but he's 2-0 against Florida St., and 2-0 in bowl games. Lots of coaches have been fired over losing rivalry games and bowl games, and justifiably so. Zook was terrible at Florida, it's that simple. i'm not going to make a huge amount of excuses for zook at florida, because i think it's common knowledge that he was as bad of a hire there as he was a good hire for illinois. you don't take a perennially top-15 program and put a guy who's never been a head coach before at the front of it. foley made a bad hire and zook was pretty much doomed from the start. at the same time, i think people have an inaccurate view of the state of the program zook took over in gainesville. his first year, there's no doubt he had some talent that he underutilized. not surprising considering he was a first-time head coach. but look at the talent (or lack thereof) on his roster his last two years. these were not great or talented teams. they produced fewer nfl draft picks than florida had historically enjoyed either before or after zook. this is not surprising, considering spurrier's final two or three recruiting classes were piss-poor and barely ranked inside the top-25 nationally. i won't claim that zook is some great coach. but the idea that he inherited some juggernaut of a team at florida is a myth fueled by bitter gator fans who were pissed he was hired in the first place.
  4. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 06:09 PM) Perhaps... lol
  5. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 05:49 PM) Probably the reason the rumor had any kind of smoke. pun intended?
  6. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) Man, do you know how many years its been since I linked to the Herald Times? Wow, I feel excited by this. cool, thanks. i was unaware he was ineligible for the first semester.
  7. question for the indiana fans: any truth to the a.j. ratliff rumors? apparently he wasn't on the team bench over the weekend and there are questions about his future with the program.
  8. so, griese goes out with an injury and rex comes in and leads a fourth-quarter comeback win. who starts next week if griese is able to go?
  9. if anything, i think the "ron zook can't coach" theory took a hit yesterday. he outcoached one of the best.
  10. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 09:07 PM) I'm not going to place the Big 10 teams in order, but I think IU and MSU are the top 2 (despite MSU's terrible exhibition play) and then OSU, Illinois, and Wisconsin are the other tourney teams and could finish anywhere from 3-5. Purdue has some nice freshmen, but return basically nothing, Michigan will be bad, PSU will pick off a couple of the good big ten teams but simply doesn't have the talent to do more than that. Minny, NW, and Iowa will all be freaking terrible. this is about how i see it. i'd clearly put msu and iu at the top, then look at a tier of osu, wisconsin, and illinois fighting it out. the schedule will probably dictate who falls where among those top five more than the talent will, because that's usually the case. people overlook the schedule, and it's really important particularly in leagues where the talent is relatively similar. i'd probably pick msu over indiana, then go wisconsin, ohio state, then illinois. illinois's league schedule doesn't help considering they only get to play iowa and northwestern once each.
  11. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 05:48 PM) You do realize Indiana only has 2 starters listed 6-9. http://indiana.rivals.com/cbroster.asp As a comparison, Wisconsin has: 4 players taller than 6'10, 1 player taller than 6'9. Im not saying that height means everything, I just often look at Indiana and wonder how are they going to match up against bigger Big 10 schools. MSU also has 4 guys who are bigger than 6'10. Im not saying that will mean Indiana cant win, I just dont think they are as sure of a bet as some people like to think. size or no size indiana will be a bear for anyone this year. they'll have the best big man and arguably best guard in the league. their guard depth is really nice as well and i think bassett is probably one of the more underrated players in the league. i can see issues for them if/when white has foul trouble, but i still don't think that will be a major issue.
  12. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 05:47 PM) The way I see it, Shula's right. Well, right-ish. If Barry Bonds gets an asterisk for suspicion of steroid use enhancing his game, which is unproven (yes I know about the leaked testimony, but there's no proof that any steroid use actually improved his game)... The Pats should get an asterisk for getting caught trying to cheat. Don Shula, however, should get an asterisk for being an ass. don did used to have an asterisk, but that was before nutri-system.
  13. shula was on mike and mike this morning and did a better job of not sounding like a bitter old man. he did say that the scandal happened after the first game and that since then new england has played great football. he seemed to back away from any suggestion of the season being tainted or deserving an asterisk, although when asked directly he'd only say "it's not my place to make those kinds of decisions."
  14. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 06:35 PM) Golden Dome, both inside and out Grotto Go into the Joyce center and check out the hockey rink and bball stadium Go behind the Joyce center and across the parking lot and check out the baseball field Head to the band concert at noon on the steps of Bond Hall Grab a spot and watch the band march to the stadium Check out the cheap but usually decent food that the dorms make (burgers, dogs) admittedly the grotto and inside of the dome are very cool. i went to nd a few years ago for a work conference and stayed at the morris inn. interesting hotel, i'm guessing it was a dorm or something at some point or other. anyhow, despite my lack of love for nd, it does have a pretty cool campus.
  15. QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 03:45 PM) For those that did watch the Illini game last night, any thoughts on Kenny Battle? I dare say that this guy was better: He was soooooo bad. How do they not screen these guys? Just because you've got a name doesn't mean you can work as a commentator. the btn has definitely pulled some guys from the end of the broadcasting bench.
  16. QUOTE(SnB @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 05:53 PM) going to my first notre dame game on saturday (just for the experience, the game will probably be awful) Any places/things I need to do while I'm there? other than boo the home team i can't think of any.
  17. running back/linebacker mikel leshoure from champaign centennial selected illinois. here's his profile: leshoure
  18. illinois won it's exhibition opener last night over quincy 82-61. it was 48-16 at halftime, and shaun pruitt, chester frazier, and calvin brock did not play. leading scorer and rebounder was freshman mike davis with 13 and nine. he was followed by freshman bill cole with 11 and eight. there will be some difficult redshirt decisions with these guys and tisdale upcoming.
  19. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 04:32 AM) There will be no post-season ban. This stuff just isn't that large enough to warrant anything close to that. If anything, they may restrict Sampson even further. keep in mind, i said worst-case scenario. all anyone knows at this point is what iu has reported to the ncaa in this matter. on that point, i'd agree that the violations as reported to the ncaa would not merit any ban. however, since the ncaa has not concluded its investigation, it's presumptive to say what they will or won't find.
  20. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 01:32 AM) These two moves are not a surprise. Cutting loose Podsednik and Cintron is next. White Sox can and hopefully will get better players than all four of these guys. upon reading that post, pods immediately tore his adductor muscle. he's out four to six.
  21. so, does grinderstad now turn into declinerstad? can this type of unilateral nickname change be done?
  22. good and good. now go get some legitimate ballplayers, kw.
  23. man, it's emblematic of the season we had when offseason arguments are centering on which guy sucked worse. rock on, 2007 white sox.
