Firefighters Being Fired For Not Speaking Spanish
jackie hayes replied to DrunkBomber's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ May 22, 2008 -> 02:46 PM) When stuff like this story happens and nothing is done about it because nobody is concerned about the demographic that is wrong. If they fired all of the Mexicans than there would be special interest groups lined up and stand up for them. If something similar to this happened to black people Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be all over it but because of who it happened to nobody cares. So now because our country is too scared to do whats right in situations like this people that have worked their way up the ladder in this field are getting laid off because they dont speak a language that isnt even required of them. So now they have to find a new way to support their families because there arent enough people in this country that will admit this is a problem. You can make light of the situation with sarcasm and spew whatever MTV has taught you about politics this week. But Im willing to guess that until it hits you closer to home you will continue on thinking this isnt a big deal. For the record, my point about discrimination wasnt meant like your example of 'when did those straight white men move into the neighborhood" It was meant as "Well we can just lay off the english speaking supervisors because there wont be a backlash like if we laid off the spanish speaking ones." Again though thank you for your valuable contribution. How about when stuff like this story happens and nothing is done about it because when the facts come out it turns out to be nothing like what people were claiming? I love it when Fox tries to made a big deal about some nonstory, and when the facts come out everyone who liked the original bogus spin come back with, Oh but you know what would happen if the story were completely different... Your claim is absurd, anyway. If you really believe that there don't exist jobs that require a person to speak English, then you're not living in any part of America that I've seen. And you don't see picket lines and screaming protesters outside every such workplace. You're just ticked that any job anywhere requires Spanish proficiency, and you expect everyone to agree. Personally, I could give a damn. As long as the job gets done, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me how people speak while they do it. -

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ May 22, 2008 -> 10:52 AM) I feel the same way. Everytime I walk down the street I hear people whisper. "Look at that straight white male, when did they move into the neighborhood?" Doesn't that make you happy there are sites like this? Not once has anyone on Soxtalk said you're straight, or male. -

QUOTE (rangercal @ May 22, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) On the other side of the token, do you think Orlando regrets taking Howard over Shawn Livingston? If Rose is a Bust and Beasley is a 10x all star, it throws all this cp3 and deron williams talk out the window. But, for the record, I would go with Rose. Just saying you can't really compare what other teams do. I'm sure the hornets did not expect Cp3 to play like Isiah at the same time the Hawks likely had higher expectations for Marvin Williams. Agreed. -

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ May 22, 2008 -> 09:08 AM) Probably because of the system both teams play in. CP3 has more creativity to do what he wants, and David West is basically an excellent jump shooter playing at PF. Without CP3, he just would not be as good. He's so good at the pick and roll, Paul, that so many times he'll either lob it to Chandler, take a little floater, or kick it back out to West from 18 feet out. Williams makes Boozer a better player also. The thing is, Boozer and West can't create their own shots. Williams and Paul do it for them. A good PG makes everyone around you better. Do you think Atlanta wishes they took Paul or Williams, instead of Marvin Williams right now? Come on... Marvin Williams is not a fair comparison, at all. I don't think it's fair to call West merely a jump shooter, either. Both he and Boozer are a force on the glass, and Beasley will be, as well. I know that a good pg will make everyone around him better, but he won't turn Tyrus into West. That type of player is something that the Bulls have been sorely in need of for a long time, and this is easily our best opportunity to get one. I'm still torn on this. But I'm sceptical about 'comparison' logic (good pg worked out best for other teams, so we should do it too). IF Beasley is the better player (I'm not saying he is, just if), I'd hope we take him and look for a pg via trade. But maybe my Calderon mancrush is blinding me. -

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ May 22, 2008 -> 09:37 AM) The Bulls should take Rose. Look at the impact CP3 and Deron Williams have had on New Orleans and Utah respectively. Beasley will become a very good player, but will he make his whole team better, as much as Rose? What to do with Kirk Hinrich then? My guess is, the Bulls will try to trade him, to a team such as the Knicks, Bucks or my best bet the Los Angeles Clippers, for an expiring contract and maybe a 1st. Does Rose make the Bulls better? Absolutely? They'll be a playoff team next season, especially if they hire Tom Thibodeau as coach, who I'm a big fan of. But I don't think they're a top 4 team. They're not better than Boston or Detroit, Orlando has a better offensive team and Dwight Howard in the middle, and Cleveland can use their expiring contracts to go put a star player next to LeBron. The Bulls also need more size IMHO. If they could somehow get a top 6-7 pick by trading either Hinrich or Gordon, use that on Lopez if he's there, and they'll be a better team for it. I'm not disagreeing, but what you said doesn't really address the big thing everyone's worried about with Rose. The Hornets don't just have Paul, they have Paul and West. The Jazz don't just have Williams, they have Williams and Boozer. Why is the Paul/Williams side more important than the West/Boozer side? Again, I'm split on this. But I do think it's a legit question. -
I don't know that this is really pro-Obama, but it's not anti-Obama, it's only about him, and it's an interesting read. The NYT on Obama's problems within the Florida Jewish population: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/22/us/politics/22jewish.html

QUOTE (jenks45monster @ May 21, 2008 -> 11:24 PM) I've got a trade idea to acquire to the #2 pick from the Heat, while retaining the #1 pick. First step: resign both Deng and Gordon. Ask the Heat for the #2 pick of the '08 draft for...Heinrich/Gordon + Deng/Thomas + Bulls 2nd Round pick of this year and the next 2. I doubt it'd ever work, but it's fun to dream of. Getting both Rose AND Beasley would be beyond amazing. There has been some talk that the Heat want to trade out of the pick if they aren't getting Rose (personally, I doubt it). But any such trade talk involving the Bulls would have to start with Deng, I imagine, and he can't be traded until after the draft. I'd be very hesitant to move him, anyway. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 21, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) Let's assume for a second that they really can't get enough English-speaking firefighters. I am not sure I fully buy that, but, let's go with it for now. Since you have so many open slots with money sitting around not being paid out, why not pay for some short classes on basic English? Or heck, even Spanish? And why not have language-specific companies, like the UN does with multi-national troops? Laying off or demoting people is just a stupid way to handle this situation. Offering classes was my first thought, too, but it may not be practical. It did say that there is an "urgent" need, so there may simply not be enough time to train the supervisors. It may also depend on the turnover. If there's high turnover, people will be leaving as soon as they're trained. Having language-specific crews could work if all the firefighters are mobile enough that you can rearrange everyone properly. But that, again, may not be workable. Any good journalist would have addressed those questions, of course. -

Why not require the firefighters to speak English? Presumably because you need 20x as many, so you can't pick and choose as much as you would in an ideal world. If that's the case, having supervisors who speak Spanish becomes a critical issue in terms of job performance and safety, so I wouldn't really have a problem with this. -

I have no idea at all if this is realistic, but just suppose the Bulls were able to trade for another good, young pg. To make it concrete, say there's an opportunity to trade for Calderon. For those who prefer Rose, would you switch if the alternative was Calderon + Beasley, or would you stick with Rose? Honest question, I'm not trying to lead, and I don't know which way I'd go. I'm just curious what the reactions will be. -

QUOTE (watchtower41 @ May 20, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) I think it was Skip Bayless on Cold Pizza or some bs. Nothing that was too big of a deal. Actually I think they were comparing Verlander's vs Buherle's... and really it was no question as to who was more dominant in their respective performance. A pitcher like MB is gonna need some luck and help to get an accomplishment like that. Any pitcher needs help and luck to do that, but I know what you mean. Saying one performance is more dominant than another doesn't bother me, really, but saying, "it shouldn't have been a no hitter", or something like that, seems classless.
-
QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ May 19, 2008 -> 10:02 PM) I didn't get to watch it, but ESPN really pissed me off when they were saying Buehrle's nono was not a dominant one and it shouldn't have been a no hitter. They also said that there were too many good plays by the defense that kept it a no hitter. I felt like slapping all of them and asking them when is there a no hitter with crappy defense? Okay, now that my rant is over, congrats to Lester. Who was it who said that? Just curious.

Somehow, Yahoo decided that David DeJesus, 0/4 with no walks was the Royals player of the game. Alrighty.

Would you throw out the First Pitch at Wrigley?

QUOTE (Reddy @ May 18, 2008 -> 11:50 AM) dude just being on a major league field is cool. when i was an extra in flags of our fathers and we shot in wrigley field it was just awesome. because the park at night under the lighting they had just looked beautiful (and that's a feat for wrigley). I'm just saying i think it'd be pretty cool to throw out a first pitch regardless. I don't disagree with that, but "pretty cool" != "an honor". It may be a neat thing to do, but I wouldn't feel like I was paid a compliment, that's all I'm saying. -

Sprinter with prosthetic legs

QUOTE (ptatc @ May 16, 2008 -> 05:31 PM) Actually there was a proposed pitching mechanics model that would be the abolute best to avoid injuries. There were a couple of problems with it however. 1. No ones lever arms (bones) are exctly the same length 2. It is difficult to repeat the perfect delevery all the time even if you can meet it in the first place. Remeber there are practical approaches coming from pitcher coasches in the field and there are biomechanical research models. The troubles is finding where they meet. For this case it is pruely biomechanics as we can run tests on the prothsis as nauseium. We know evy little thing about them and the materials. This is how we know how much of an advantage it is. As I said, I know I'm not an expert. But it seems like there has been some expert debate over this. The guy who led the study used by Pistorius -- although I know the criticisms of him -- is obviously very qualified. In my mind, for now, it's an open question. -

QUOTE (ptatc @ May 16, 2008 -> 02:55 PM) There has been a great deal of research on runners motions, torques, velocity of each individual body segment, mostly on the lumbar spine and lower extremities. Through our motion analysis systems coupled to EMG units, we know when muscle activate and to what degree in the average runner and olympic caliber runners. Through Respiratory research (you may have seen these on the news where they run with the masks on) we know the amount of oxygen that is used and it's efficiency in the body and for individual muscles. The research is fairly reliable and valid. From the studies I've read and from experience with patients this is a subject that will not go away and needs to be addressed now because it will come around again. Eh...I'm sceptical. Not that the research is good, just that it is as finely tuned as it would need to be to make the comparison. Measuring the individual parts is one thing, gauging from those the 'overall effect' is orders of magnitude more difficult. That is true of highly abstract, simplified, mathematical models -- it has to be much more difficult when dealing with the body. I know I'm not an expert, but I'm still doubtful from analogues. If we could measure overall effects so perfectly, it would seem possible to design the One Perfect Pitching Motion, proven mathematically to be better than all others. Which is something I at least never saw. (Mark Prior excepted, of course.) And by "controlled experiments", I meant something a little more grisly than that research. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 16, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) So making it easier to prosecute these crimes isn't going to help underreporting? That makes no sense to me. Argue it could cause other problems, fine. It gives women the ability to have the evidence on hand, even if they feel they want to try to "get over it" at first, but as time passes decide she needs to prosecute to make sure the crime doesn't happen to anyone else. It actually could help with reporting. Actually, I think it could go either way. Consider a woman who goes into the ER unsure what to do. Now, she might feel pressured to report the crime. But once it's widely known that this is an option, it might seem like a "safe" option. But every day after the crime, she might have more and more doubts about reporting it, and about her credibility after waiting to report. (And, honestly, I can't imagine that argument wouldn't be used in court.) I don't think it's impossible that you would have more treatment but fewer prosecutions. I'm not sure, but I can imagine that. It'll be interesting to see the statistics.
