  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 04:04 PM) I'd like to point out that if Babe Ruth were trying to break into the majors today, he'd probably have a hell of a time making it. Scouts would have questioned his physical stature and he'd have never gotten drafted. In fact, you could probably say that about a good number of very very good pitchers from prior generations (pre gun days). I think you're thinking of his physique later in his career. When he broke in, he was a strong, athletic 6'2" left-hander. That would look good to scouts of any era. Only after he was established did his body go the way of Miguel Cabrera's. On the other hand, it's anybody's guess if he could avoid getting kicked out of high school these days.
  2. Tsvangirai is being held by police. Again. http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/world/inter...tsvangirai.html
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) Fight Night at Fenway! Crisp got gang raped. Rotoworld comments:
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 10:26 AM) The whole reason they wanted him to come back from exile is so that they could imprison and kill him. Didn't he only come back after receiving assurances from the leaders of neighbor states that they would work to assure his safety? (Mbeki being the big one.) I thought I read something like that... Actually, interesting note: http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5iv_46j...TBCI3BHB0yH_B0g Oh, and Mugabe's suspended all activities of aid groups in a starving country. Lots of good stuff there.
  5. Pretty unreal. Some conflicting info on Tsvanirai's arrest. From NSS's CNN link: From the NYT: Which would be a funny charge if it weren't so completely in character for Mugabe.
  6. So does this mean Uribe will be released?
  7. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) QFT...couldn't have been more right on. To make room for Loaiza on the 25-man roster, the Sox optioned reliever Ehren Wasserman to Class AAA Charlotte. Loaiza takes his spot in the bullpen. "Just protection,'' White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said of his latest Loaiza addition. "One thing that (manager) Ozzie (Guillen) and Coop (pitching coach Don Cooper) expressed to me a couple of weeks ago was a desire to maybe move Nick Masset into a little bit more prominent role in the back of the bullpen on days when (Scott) Linebrink or (Octavio) Dotel may not be available. "We've obviously gained a lot of confidence in Nick's ability to get big outs and throw groundballs and get us double-play situations.'' Loaiza was 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA in seven games (3 starts) with the Dodgers this season before the Sox claimed him off waivers. The right-hander was in uniform Wednesday night against the Royals. "My concern was the bullpen, the way we were using it,'' White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We've got to protect our pitchers the best we can. Loaiza can do both. He's going to be the long man and an emergency starter. That's the way we're going to start with him. That will give us an opportunity to use Masset more. Because the way Masset is pitching, I think we should use him a little bit more.'' Wait...we're still paying him the minimum, right? Not the prorated part of his original contract. Right?
  8. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 09:12 PM) Cain and Jenks will be better than Smoltz and Hoffman in 2009, 2010...etc. Rivera can't stay this successful all season and Cain can't stay this bad his whole career. I'm saying, when it comes to keeper guys and depth, you go with youth. Agreed, the rankings change quite a bit when it comes to keepers. I just assume it's a redraft league unless someone specifies that it's a keeper. Rivera can't stay this successful, and I think (hope?) Cain will go on a run any day now. But I still think Smoltz was the better bet for this year, going into the season. Just bad luck for his owners. (Rivera and Jenks I had about even.)
  9. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) OH NOES!1!!!!! X2 Yup, all your predictions are coming true. Smoltz was washed up the whole time. It's like Liriano a couple years ago. All the geezers. Matt Cain is destroying the league, and man, does Mariano Rivera suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck...
  10. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 02:31 PM) Loaiza for the remainder of the year for a team not going anywhere is better than getting the FA clocking run when you are out of it already. He also could eat innings and possibly net you an extra pick in the draft if he pans out. For a Jay Bruce, sure, you want to push the clock back. For a Phil Dumatrait, the clock's already started, and even if it wasn't, it's more important to see what you have than to worry about his super 2 status.
  11. More assholeism by Robert Mugabe. The opposition leader is being held by police: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/05/world/af...05zimbabwe.html Interesting to see where this goes, and what Mbeki has to say about it.
  12. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) I just find it hard to believe that no other team would give him a starting spot in their rotation. Especially a bad tem. Unless he knows he is finished wouldn't he Pirates, Reds, etc. be able ot offer him a spot to build up his value for this offseason. Maybe the Sox just guaranteed him a rotation spot in AAA where he is free to leave whenever he wanted. Definitely not the Reds. They have Cueto, Volquez, Bailey, Harang, and Arroyo, every one a better bet than Loaiza. The Pirates are also loaded with young pitchers, even if some of them aren't so hot. The Nats starters have been surprisingly good. The Brewers could use a pitcher, but even Bush has been as good as Loaiza this year. Loaiza's just too old -- teams that are rebuilding are going to take their chances with the longest-shot youngster before going to Loaiza. Teams that are competing mostly have a passable 1-5.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 12:46 PM) Yeah, this can't be to release Masset. I know his WHIP is a bit high, but you don't release ANY pitchers with a 3.38 ERA in the current baseball climate. Agreed. Loaiza's just a backup plan, and I'd be shocked if he goes anywhere but Charlotte. Our pitching is good, but a little depth won't hurt. And I doubt anybody was clamoring for Loaiza to start for them. He gets back to the organization where he had success, tries to turn around his career. Win-win, low-impact, no-risk move.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) The Bulls still are holding their 2nd round PG from last year, JamesOn Curry, who they sent to the D-League most of the year. But honestly, if the Bulls do draft rose and can't clear at least 1 of the Shooting Guards out, then they really don't need another backup guard. Whether it's ideal or not, they really have to use one of Gordon/Sef/Hughes as the backup PG just because there aren't enough minutes to go around at the SG spot. If the Bulls are able to make a move clearing out a guard, then a backup PG would be an ideal thing to get in return, assuming Rose is drafted. Or, they have a trade exemption they could use to steal a player from a team looking to clear cap space. Or they would still have the MLE to spend on a player. They have lots of options. The key is going to be what kind of deal they can make to clear out some of these big salary players. All true, and I forgot about Curry. I'm just kind of thinking out loud. It's not very important for next year, but it would be nice if they could find an adequate backup point at some point soon, without committing any serious money to him.
  15. QUOTE (north side chi sox fan @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 01:24 PM) Guillen didnt drop any swear words?? Whoa, whoa, whoa, I did NOT say that. Let's be realistic, here. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) Should be in green Too obvious for that.
  16. What's our pick in the 2nd, anyway? And a very odd question -- will there be any point guards available? It's strange, but we may actually need another pg, even after adding Rose, and even considering how crowded our backcourt is. If the Bulls take Rose, they'll be looking to deal Hinrich, and Duhon could be gone. Gordon SUCKS at the point. I mean, you could get by without someone. Gordon or Hughes could bring the ball up a few times a game. But it's not an ideal situation.
  17. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) Right, right. Seriously though, didn't Ozzie call him out for his lack of preparation or for being lazy, or something along those lines? I don't remember that. This was all I could find: http://media.www.dailyvidette.com/media/st...ox-635686.shtml Is that what you mean? Eh...by Guillen's standards, it's almost encouragement.
  18. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) Interesting. I thought Ozzie absolutely hated Loaiza? No, he loves latinos, he hates whites. Remember?
  19. I didn't notice it. But I'm not sure why I should be surprised by that...
  20. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 11:36 AM) If we got Wade and Beasley we would be a playoff team that day, immediately. That would be a dumb move by the Heat and a brilliant move by Pax. I have no problems with Paxson, but Stupendous Luck != Brilliance.
  21. This may be old news, but I hadn't seen it before and I'm not gonna try to search for it. From Joel Zumaya's wikipedia page:
  22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 02:49 PM) What is up with this holding Wade out for another season? Didn't the Heat shut him down late to essentially assure he'd be 100% by seasons end? I don't follow the heat religiously, but am I missing something. Did he reinjure his shoulder or anything along those lines? I think there are still questions about his health, but nobody (except maybe the Heat) knows the true situation. Iirc, he was playing injured almost the entire year. Since he didn't recover over the previous offseason, and he was worked pretty hard while still injured (they shut him down, but it was pretty late in the year, and he still played 51 games with heavy minutes), some are wondering if he'll have enough time to recover this offseason. Basically, if he's at the same point (healthwise) now that he was last offseason (which is a plausible guess, given his workload), you'd think that if he couldn't recover last offseason, he probably won't be able to this year, either. I'm not saying he will or will not be 100% healthy (I have no idea) -- just that it's a fair concern.
  23. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 01:12 PM) 2 years ago, I would have been yelling at Pax to make the trade like I was last offseason when Kobe-to-the-Bulls rumors came up. However, if we make the trade and it's Gordon, Hinrich, and the #1 for Wade and the #2, it could inevitably be Gordon, Hinrich, and Rose for Beasley. For next year? Maybe. The Heat were morons for keeping him out on the floor as long as they did; it's possible he won't be good to go for next year. But as long as the Bulls are more careful, they would be getting a superstar along with a great scoring frontcourt guy for a great point guard and a handful of role players. HELL YES. Not that the Heat would even look at that deal -- I'm just saying, if by some cosmic generosity that offer were there, the Bulls would be tripping over themselves to get the paperwork into the NBA office as soon as possible. If I were Paxson, I'd go to Stern's apartment at 3 am to get him to sign before the Heat regained their senses. That's just how good that deal would be.
  24. I think the key words for me were, "Dwyane Wade says". If it's the Tribune making s*** up, okay, dismiss it immediately. But when it's Wade doing the talking...it doesn't mean anything in particular, but, damn, that's intriguing.
