  1. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Feb 4, 2008 -> 12:39 AM) OK seasons over, it's baseball time now. Nah...let's linger on this one a while, k?
  2. QUOTE(bschmaranz @ Feb 1, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) For someone who said four words the entire White Sox/Red Sox series ("Ortiz", "Ramirez", "Schilling" and "Red Sawx"), he's got a lot to say there. I recall two more words. "Oh no!!!!!"
  3. Pretty funny press release. Women in general sound more like some notion of a quiet, obedient, neglected housewife -- they stay quiet and support Kennedy, even when he's hurting them... I wouldn't think that's the image NOW wants to popularize. As for the original question, sexism or racism, which is better. Sexism is much funnier, and it ticks off about 50% in almost any crowd, so it's much more consistent. So I'll go with sexism.
  4. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 04:45 PM) I'm going to assume Hughes was never on the table from the Yanks, because if he was, the Twins f***ed up big time on this one... Yeah, you just kept hearing how the Twins were asking for BOTH Hughes and Kennedy, and that that was the holdup. Then they settle for this package? I don't know quite what to believe.
  5. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) other than humber, i'm not real familiar with the guys the mets gave up. any insight into these guys? Gomez is the star, an of who has tons of speed (I hear) and should have power...but hasn't shown any yet (he's 21 or 22). Guerra is a intriguing pitcher, but very young (19 or so). Mulvey's been okay in the minors, but not a very high ceiling, and you know how Humber's star has fallen. At least, that's the impression from what I've read. I haven't watched these guys.
  6. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 04:35 PM) well, if the window is correct, anyone care to throw out a guess on years and $$$ ?? $150 mil over 6? Pretty nice deal for us. I'm surprised they couldn't even finagle Martinez out of the Mets.
  7. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 02:13 AM) there's gotta be a reason why you are traded 3 times in 3 years. I like Gio, but I'd keep DLS over him in a heartbeat. DLS's stuff, from what I have seen, is much superior. I'm so tired of this argument. There are still two parties agreeing to every trade, as far as I know.
  8. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 09:41 PM) Nick Swisher and Grady Sizemore shouldn't even be in the same sentence. Don't you mean to say, "Nick Swisher and that guy shouldn't even be in the same sentence. And by 'that guy', I mean Grady Sizemore"?
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 09:30 PM) I don't think you've got those exaclty right either, not if you're talking about last year at least. There's no way that Willis had anything close to an ERA above the league average last year. No, the 4.17 stat corresponds to Willis's career, so it should be compared to his career average. Last year obviously he was below league average (an era+ of 83).
  10. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 06:59 PM) Baseball Reference Link for more information I thought so. I do not think it means what you think it means. That's not Dontrelle's park-adjusted era that you're citing, that's the park-adjusted era for a league average pitcher (lgERA). It's used to provide a reference to compare a pitcher to. So an average pitcher throwing in the same parks would have an era of 4.17. Willis had an era of 3.78, or an era+ of 110 -- about 10% better than a league-average pitcher.
  11. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 04:36 PM) Your argument lost a lot of steam with this one. Rogers' injury last year can easily be blamed on him being old, and he could easily suffer many injuries this year... counting on him now is pretty iffy. Oh, and D-Train sucked balls in a horrible league in a horrible pitchers park. If playing for millions upon millions upon millions of dollars isn't enough for him, then I don't know what other motivation he needs. He burst onto the scene as a kid for a team that went on to win the World Series, and he's been living on that hype ever since. His park adjusted era in the NL is a whopping 4.17. Now, the park doesn't hurt him in Detroit, but I think that's a pretty good indication of the type of pitcher he can only HOPE of being considering the move to the AL Central. D-Train's just not THAT good. However, he's a good #4 or 5, so you're right about that part. The Rogers part hurts you though. So, 2005 was great for the Sox, but that doesn't mean you should be totally oblivious to everything else that happened that year. And where are you getting that "park adjusted era"?
  12. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 11:58 PM) Well I figured I'd come to some other agreement later, like a finger or something, but it seems pretty macho betting something like that. And then I'd donate the nut to charity in all likelihood. You know, show them that I am actually a good character guy even when taking another's nut. Those sick children can ask for strange things, it's true. Still...
  13. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 11:48 PM) I'll take that bet. I also see someone's just a little upset over losing Ryan Sweeney. wite, I'm not entirely sure why you'd want someone's left nut. But I am sure that when you start betting your genitals on baseball, it's time to reassess things.
  14. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 03:31 PM) Throwing this out there, but the Sox could realistically deal Konerko and not get a first baseman back (with Fields playing 1st and Crede playing 3B). It may not be perfect but with Swisher here you could afford doing that. Plus if you are able to get a legit 2nd baseman and leadoff hitter in the deal as well a darn good pitcher I'd be all for the move. Would the Angels move Howie Kendrick and a starting pitching prospect for Konerko (I know the Sox have Richar, but Kendrick is ridiculously good). I'm not necessarily saying that is all the Sox get, but you could get the 2nd baseman for the future (and a guy who is projected to win a batting title sometime in his career) and present plus someone for your rotation. Say you get Adenhart, Kendrick, and Juan Rivera (I throw this name out there so the Sox have an option in case no one plays center, plus the Angels shed one of there outfield spots....if people would prefer Willits, that is fine). I know that is a lot of talent from the Angels perspective and they have added bats like Hunter but it is still a move they could easily afford. Again, people may jump on it because the Sox have Richar, but good lord, if you could get Kendrick...umm yeah. It took them a while to decide to include Kendrick for Miguel Cabrera. They're not dealing him for Konerko. And they sure as hell are not including Adenhart on top of Kendrick.
  15. QUOTE(Wanne @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) Scout board is about 50/50. Did pick this up off of it.... Five-Star Prospects 1A. Fautino de los Santos, RHP 1B. Daric Barton, 1B 3. Carlos Gonzalez, OF Four-Star Prospects 4. Brett Anderson, LHP 5. Gio Gonzalez, LHP 6. Trevor Cahill, RHP Three-Star Prospects 7. Chris Carter, 1B 8. James Simmons, RHP 9. Aaron Cunningham, OF 10. Henry Rodriguez, RHP 11. Andrew Bailey, RHP 12. Corey Brown, OF 13. Jermaine Mitchell, OF One thing that pops into my mind...was there something about DLS that Kenny knew?!? It just seems to me that you hang on to guys like this if he's rated so highly...or at least get more than a Swisher. Huh? Swisher's an excellent young bat under team control forever. What do you expect to get? QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) Fields + Danks for Bedard? I'm not one for trade ideas and bulls*** like that, but Crede plays 3B for us and Baltimore gets to your ML-ready players with huge upside for Bedard. How does that no get done? It doesn't get done because Baltimore can do better for one of the top pitchers in the game under control for two years.
  16. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) But could Paul Konerko, Joe Crede and prospects get that deal done? No. Baltimore is doing a long-term rebuild. They won't touch Crede, and Konerko does nothing for them.
  17. It's definitely not overpaying. Considering how long Swisher's under control, that's the price you're gonna pay. But I wonder if it's an example of a GM who doesn't have the long-term health of the franchise in mind. KW's not on the hot seat now, but he knows that could change very quickly. Decimate the farm system to buy a couple years, if not a legitimate shot at a title. So, looking at our remaining 6th starters, we have Egbert, Haeger, and Broadway. I guess it could be worse. Oh, wait -- Masset. Wow, that got worse fast.
  18. QUOTE(The Beast @ Dec 23, 2007 -> 02:33 AM) Who would take his salary? The Rays? I seriously have no idea who would take Uribe other than if we packaged him with a prospect and the Count or Konerko to somewhere. I have no clue.
  19. QUOTE(The Beast @ Dec 23, 2007 -> 12:55 AM) Per whitesox.com ---Scott Merkin, staff writer. What do you guys think about the statement of Juan Uribe? Who would take Uribe and his $4.5 million dollar salary? Or do you guys think that we'll either trade Cabrera, or keep him and play Uribe off the bench? I doubt a package of Uribe and Conteras with a minor leaguer such as Gio/DLS would look that appealing to other clubs. It's pure spin. Juan Uribe is gone, Ramirez or no Ramirez, if anyone will take his salary.
  20. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 22, 2007 -> 02:51 AM) There is room for hack journalism in my heart; there is room for puff pieces. Besides, it's a good story. Gonzalez didn't block. Gonzalez blocked. Riveting.
  21. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 22, 2007 -> 02:27 AM) I love it. It's tough to take a writer seriously when he uses one of his paragraphs to describe his own personal f***-fantasy. Complete with pedophilia! "As if they were junior high kids", indeed. GP, you're slipping if you actually think puff pieces like this have any value. Have some f***ing standards, man.
  22. So, if I can just summarize the discussion here, I think everyone will agree on the following facts: 1. We just got the next Mays. 2. All Japanese players f***ing suck but all Cubans are frickin' awesome. 3. We have to be patient and let him adjust to the ML game -- it might even be a whole year before he makes Jose Reyes and Curtis Granderson look like rotting poo. Can we say "Consensus"...
  23. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Dec 22, 2007 -> 12:39 AM) I don't know if this article says anything different. Not really. It does say that his wife did her medical studies in Cuba, which makes sense. And the quote from Ramirez is something like, 'I always dreamed of playing with the best ballplayers and when I got that opportunity in the WBC, I told myself that I had to make an effort to play in the same league where they play.' Those are the only things I didn't see in the English articles -- but then they may have been updated, too.
  24. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 01:58 PM) Sure, signing Pedro was Bold. And while he's been above average over his career with the Mets, they've thus far paid him about $40 million for 59 starts and 378 IP. That works out to what, $105, 820 per inning pitched or $677,966 per start. Not sure if that has worked out very well for them. And they still owe him $10 million in 08'. Eh...there's no such thing as a safe, bold move. Though those numbers don't really look bad, in retrospect -- considering Silva's going to get almost $400K per start over the next 4 years (and that's if he stays healthy the entire time). Overall, I think that deal worked out pretty well for the Mets.
