Harvard bans men from gym for certain hours.
jackie hayes replied to WilliamTell's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 03:04 PM) I don't really care about the issue at hand, my issue is with the logic of those that are "supporting" it simply because it's "only" 6 hours and it's "only" one gym that's rarely used. Can we extend this logic to say, waterboarding? It's "only" happened about 6 times and it "only" happens to extreme inmates. So even though in theory it's a deplorable practice, it's infrequent use makes it acceptable. Or what about NSA wire taps? In the grand scheme of things it's quite narrow in use. I mean I know what you guys are trying to say - in reality it's not THAT big of a deal. But I don't like the logic. I would say the consequences of each act are just slightly different. -
Who is Snackbox 2008? N/m, figured it out. So we still need hammerhead, SF1, supernuke, and Fattyguy78 to join.

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 08:01 PM) Im in, 4th place finish is not an option for me again this year Oh and Zoom, that list in your first post is 13 people so someone I guess is SOL. Uh oh... I wash my hands of this, it was the work of the previous administration.

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 03:50 PM) Those damn custom URL's never seem to work... It may be that it only works after you sign up for the league. It works for me now.

When Zoom first approached me about being the commish (this was weeks ago), I balked. I said, Zoom, if I'm a commish, I can't be an asshole any more. Zoom said, No, no, we wouldn't dream of not allowing you to be an asshole, jackie. But, I said, Zoom, none of the commishes in other leagues and years have been assholes. Are you sure I can be an effective asshole commissioner? And Zoom replied, Look at what an asshole you're being right now, jackie. Believe me, we know what an asshole you are. Don't worry about it and shut up. Asshole... So there you have it. Details, details... League id: 162706 League name: Soxtalk II Password: jackieischamp And all conveniently arranged at http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/soxtalk2 The draft time is just a placeholder. Let me know what would work for you. I don't want to do it too early, though. Having a season ruined by a spring training injury would be weak. For now, I just imported the settings from last year. If there are any suggestions, post them in this thread. One thing I won't do is change the settings after the draft, so you should make comments now. Finally, when you register your team, post your team name in this thread. Let's have a good -- AND ACTIVE!!! -- year. I registered as The Lincecum Era. Unless hh wants it, of course. Teams: jackie hayes -- The Lincecum Era Soxfest -- SS Hitmen WHarris1 -- WHarris knightni -- knightni Kalapse -- Black Ichiro MHizzle85 -- MHizzle85 ChWRoCk2 -- C-Rock2 SoxFanForever -- Snackbox 2008 hammerhead johnson -- hammerhead supernuke -- The Supernukers SoxFan1 -- Swisher Sweets fattyguy78 -- White Sox Stompers

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 04:27 PM) If it were just a little thing, it wouldn't be a problem. Kenny Williams, more than anyone else on the planet, wants Anderson to succeed to pad his ego, and shut up the Chris Young talk. They wouldn't just make stuff up when it is in their best interests for Anderson to be their CF. I can't see how anyone would think otherwise. There are a lot more explanations than that. I don't know which one is the truth. All I know about THIS is that...Anderson enjoyed going out at night. Who the f*** doesn't? If he was coming into team meetings drunk or missed practice with hangovers, that would be something. Just noting that he wasn't at home every evening? Good for him.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) Funny at 8pm on a Saturday night, I would expect him to be on a baseball field most of the time. Fair enough, I'm thinking in spring training mode now. But the point stands.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 04:16 PM) If you aren't ready on the field, it doesn't look go to be putting more work into your social life. It has nothing to do with having a life, its about doing your job first, then having a life. It's got nothing to do with his preparation. It's romantic to think these young players are taking batting practice at 8 pm Saturday night, but it's not happening.
-
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 04:11 PM) I think this argument is flawed. Jerry Owens has almost zero baseball intelligence. However, Brian Anderson had the job handed to him in 2006 and admitted to being unprepared. Yet he still had time to enjoy the Chicago nightlife. I will never understand why fans expect a young 20-something ballplayer to not have a life.

QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 27, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) Didnt see that. That gives the Panthers a big target to distract teams from keying so heavily on Steve Smith now. If Colbert can live up to his potential, the Panthers could have a pretty decent offense next season. Supposedly Carolina's not bringing Colbert back. -
Has the Internet taken some fun out of baseball?
jackie hayes replied to Controlled Chaos's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 27, 2008 -> 11:12 AM) You want to claim Joe Crede as your favorite player, you better be ready to defend yourself against his lackluster career .305 OBP, because you will be questioned on it. Not true. Crede is my favorite player, but that doesn't mean I think he's the best player, or even a top 3b. It's when someone claims that player X is better than player Y that he has to defend the obp, slg, blonde hair, or whatever. -

Completely disagree. When I was young (which is close enough to 20 years ago), I pored over the stats on the back of baseball cards. Those 2 or 3 random facts that Topps saw fit to print below the career stats I had almost memorized for every Sox player. I imagine if I grew up now I'd care more about obp than runs, but otherwise I don't think there'd be an enormous difference. I'd say the bigger changes are in the game itself. We follow contracts more closely because free agency's evolved quite a bit in 20 years, not because of the internet. -
Seriously, you won't find a decent suit for less than $100. Imho, anyway. And you'll often have to pay...eh, say $200-300. If you hit a good sale, less, but that's not always the case. And, I don't own any, but the RL suits at Macys do seem nice. (On sale now for low-$200s to $300. Maybe there's a coupon you could tack on, I'm not sure.) Some people love Jos A Bank, and they have a good clearance sale now, with suits from $100-200. Absolutely must be 100% wool. Then decide on color, stripes/patterns, 2 or 3 button, the vent, flat front vs pleats, etc. Plus, obviously, the fit and the quality of the fabric. Good luck.

QUOTE(farmteam @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 09:30 PM) I'll need to get one or two soon. How much should a cheaper one cost me? $25, tops. If the salesman wants more, laugh at him maniacally. Rayon is for kings, baby.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 25, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) I met Crede's dad during spring training a couple of years ago. He was really nice. Probably still is. QUOTE(Felix @ Feb 25, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) But could he beat up Fields' dad? Thats the real question. QUOTE(almagest @ Feb 25, 2008 -> 03:33 PM) Searching Google for "Josh Fields' dad" gave me a picture of Ray Liotta. Point to the Fields side. I luuuuuuuuv good exchanges. Good natured good exchanges -- it must be spring training time.

QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) I really think that about half my guys are due for a career year, a breakout or a comeback. Most of them except for Rollins, Jenks and Hill are either coming off a poorer than normal season, or a partial season due to being so young. I'm looking for the rebound. But yeah, the BA will be down. Yeah, and it's a better strategy, looking for breakouts instead of Kevin Millars, but you have 4 big ba liabilities in Gordon, Fields, Young, and Upton. Maybe two of those will be solid this year, maybe, but Young at least is guaranteed to be a big drag in that cat. I'm not criticizing -- in a league that big, those are just the sacrifices you have to make. I'd look to drop Marquis for 'the next big thing' callup pitcher. Even with a Zito rebound you can't expect too many strikeouts, as his k totals have been going down for a while, and he's probably your 2nd best strikeout starter. Jmho.

Is this h2h or roto? Eh, either way it's basically a tossup. I'd stick with Kemp if I were you. He'll get enough pt, I think, and anyway it's more fun to go with players you believe in. No matter how many times Daniel Cabrera's screwed me, I still don't regret picking him off waivers. I kind of agree with knightni on Wang, but it's your league, you know better what works.
-
QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 01:28 AM) 20 team league - what do you think? Wow, that's a big league. Roto, I guess? You'll tank batting average, and your pitching has some injury concerns. You only have one real strikeout pitcher, and he's one of those concerns (although I think he's a good pick). It's tough to judge overall when I've never been in a league that big.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Feb 24, 2008 -> 11:14 PM) Word, but jackie, you can't be one of the top 10 defenders in NBA history at the age of 30, and then a complete piece of s*** at 33. Was he utilized properly in his time with Chicago? That's what people need to be asking themselves. This trade was historically bad. We just picked up two of the absolute dumbest players in the NBA. I can't put into words how stupid these guys are. Gooden is dumb. I don't know that Hughes is dumb. His job has always been to shoot, not think, and dammit if he hasn't done that. And how. And with all that, I still don't mind Gooden as much as Hughes, so maybe dumb ain't so bad? I really don't think Ben played so badly last year. But he was embarrassingly slow this year. That's why I can't believe it's really an issue of how he was utilized. It may be that he just didn't care any more, and he could well finish the year strong. But even if that's the case, do the Bulls do anything worse than move sideways? If that's the floor, how bad can the trade be?

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Feb 24, 2008 -> 10:31 PM) Wallace won four DOPY awards, and all of a sudden he is trash at the age of 33? Tyson Chandler was damaged goods as well, correct? I dunno, but he was trash for the Bulls. It may be that he was just half-assing it in Chicago, but that wasn't going to change. He could have a resurgence in Cleveland and it still wouldn't make this a bad trade. He was either washed up or apathetic, and either way, he's gotta go. And just for the record, I always thought Tyson was good.
