QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 04:52 PM) If I'm the Yankees, with my financial resources, if I can get a pitcher like Johan, who chews up innings and can absolutely dominate and who is even a lefty (Hi Mr. Ortiz!) and who may very well just cruise to 250 wins with me...and I can do it without giving up my #1 guy (Joba) I would give up anyone else to do it. Esp. if it keeps the Red Sox from getting in the same game. Even without the financial constraints, how many people here would give up everything we have for Cabrera and he's only 1 more year from FA? And now what would happen if you could get him without giving up DLS? As good as Santana is, he's only 1/5 of a rotation. Especially for a team that has had such problems finding 5 merely competent starters, I think 2 pitchers of that caliber is too much to give up. There's something to be said for quantity as well as quality -- especially with the talent of those three. Anyway, suppose you offer (say) Hughes, Melky, Tabata, and a lesser pitcher. Even if the Red Sox manage to beat that, at least you've taken Buchholz away. I wouldn't give up everything for Cabrera. I'd be willing to give up a lot -- based on the idea that we'd get a lot back if we trade him later. Probably not as much, but enough that it would make it worth the risk.

QUOTE(NUKE @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 11:50 PM) Im surprised these Islamic thugs aren't out demanding the kids in the class be killed because they have been "tainted" or something lame like that. Yeah, well, you'd be surprised that there's a Muslim alive who disagrees with the idea of killing the teacher. You'd be surprised at a lot of things, Nuke. QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 12:09 AM) anyone know how many people have been found guilty of this crime? anyone here (or in the media) actually care before it was a european who broke the law? You care to recite the actual law for us? Because it's damn hard to find this Sudanese criminal code. The charge is something like "insulting religion and inciting hatred". Unless it's a LOT more specific, she DID NOT BREAK THE LAW. Do you refuse to accept that there is an overriding demagogic hatred for the West in certain quarters of Islam? Really, any acceptance of this verdict is just f***ing absurd. An older article on this: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/africa...icle3204071.ece f***ing democracy... I just can't believe anyone is defending a justice system that claims that allowing 7-year olds to call a stuffed animal a particular name is an insult to religion and incites hatred. The suggestion that she was some carefree Western tourist, smugly flouting the laws of her host country...I really start to wonder if you're really liberal, or an arch-conservative's caricature of a liberal. -

QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 11:31 PM) Yeah, but who is going to beat the Red Sox with Santana/Beckett/Dice K/Buchholz/Schilling? Especially in the postseason? A lucky team. Jmho, but the first thing to worry about is getting there. I was hoping he'd go to the Dodgers, but a weaker division is more important. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 09:15 PM) As good as Hughes may be, Santana probably is the best pitcher in baseball. Money seems to be no object for the Yankees, I really don't know why they even hesitate. I think the Twins planted the Santana to Boston is a done deal rumor to get the Yankees to increase their offer. I actually like Coco Crisp. I hope KW gets him and another OF, hopefully Fukodome. Oh, I'm not comparing him to Santana. I'm just hoping the Twins get the crappiest package possible. From our perspective, I think I like the Lester package more than the Hughes one. -
Miscellaneous "MLB" Trade Notes

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 08:54 PM) This is terrible news for the Sox, as this increases the chances of Crisp to the White Sox by about 100 pct. Well, that, and we'd be facing Hughes for 6 years or so. -

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 09:00 PM) whoa, what a bunch of psychos. angry mobs are out to kill her for naming a Teddy bear ? http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article531449.ece No, for allowing 7-year old Muslim children to name a teddy bear. Even better. -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 11:14 AM) The Knicks are the perfect example as to why statistics aren't everything. With the talent they have on paper, their record should be reversed. They need to fire Isiah totally, melt it all down and start over again. They are such a mess. Huh? Only if you look at no stat except scoring. The talent they have on paper is almost defender-free.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 03:17 PM) While I don't at all see this as "with us or against us", I would support an operation to get her out. For that matter, I think a good response would be to not just pull her out, but pull some other ties back as well, making it clear that such a reaction is not tolerable. You mean hypothetically? As in, if she were actually going to be executed? -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 02:44 PM) I'm sort of confused as to that as well. Are you saying that 3 seasons of splits for a middle or short reliever is insufficient to decide how they perform in those scenarios? If that is the case, how would you make that determination then? If you were looking at whether to sign, keep or trade a MacDougal, a Linebrink, a Riske or a Thornton, would you not be curious how a setup or 7th/8th inning type guy does in critical situations (runners on, late innings, close score)? Yeah, that's basically what I'd say. I wouldn't make a determination -- at least, I'd admit that any such judgement is very likely to be wrong. I'm very, very, very sceptical about clutchness in general. And I'd add that, first, you MUST compare to league averages (or use some sort of normalization) when using these stats. They are meaningless otherwise. And that, second, I'm not sure that clutch pitchers are clearly more desirable. Between two pitchers who put up similar headline numbers, is it good to have a guy who's getting in trouble more often, then is somewhat better at getting out of it? If clutchness exists, it seems the ideal bullpen would be composed of unclutch and clutch pitchers alike. The unclutch pitchers throw in low pressure situations. Then in the relatively rare situations when they get in trouble, you bring in the clutch pitcher. The best of both worlds.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 02:30 PM) Please inform me. I'm not going to write an essay trying to clarify what I believe someone else believes. If Kalapse wants to do that, he'll do it himself. I don't think he's saying MacD is an outstanding pressure reliever based on 30 abs or so, but that's his deal. I'll stick to what I'm thinking.
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 02:23 PM) This is kind of funny. There is one poster trying to assert MacDougal's ability based on about 15 innings of exposure in high pressure situations in part of 2006, and another one telling me that roughly 6 times that much over three seasons isn't enough to be statistically reliable. I give. First, different posters can have different arguments. Who knew? Second, I think you're not understanding Kalapse's argument.
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 02:10 PM) First, I tend to avoid using the word "clutch", and I'm pretty sure I didn't use it here. Second, I could care less about their demeanor out there. Calm and collected is fine. A bit hyper is fine too. Whatever works for them. Third, the whole reason I used a 3 year period is that it was going to be much more statistically reliable than a half season. I couldn't tell you the standard deviation for a 3 year split, but you figure a reliever like MacD, Riske or Linebrink might put in 40 to 60 innings in a full season, that's 150 IP over 3 years. So, maybe the equivalent of 50 to 100 IP with runners on, give or take. I'd consider that a decent sample size. Whatever word is used, it means the same thing. This isn't even semantics, it's aesthetics. I said nothing about demeanor. "much more statistically reliable" != "statistically reliable"
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 12:26 PM) I think for relievers, who are streaky by nature and don't put in a lot of innings, its hard to justify just looking at part of a year. But 2006 in total... None on: .180/.206 Leading off an inning: .120/.154 Runners on: .244/.319 Scoring Pos: .207/.303 Close and Late: .222/.273 Overall very good numbers, but again, even at his best, he becomes less dominant with the pressure on. First, it makes little sense to make a sample size argument while relying on reliever splits, even over 3 years. Now, if you can show that the standard deviations (hey, we're using stats, so let's talk stats) are small enough that those splits are reliable, I'm open to correction. But I really doubt you'll be able to show that. Second, even if the splits were reliable (which I doubt), you would have to compare them to league averages for them to be meaningful. There are reasons beyond 'unclutchness' that a pitcher is not as good with runners on -- fielder positioning, the basic odds about the hitter he's facing, pitch selection, etc. Third, why is it we praise "clutch" pitchers? Because of the drama? You can say that unclutch pitchers wilt under pressure. You can just as well say that clutch pitchers apparently don't give a f*** until they've already done damage. Why would I praise someone who's too lazy or indifferent to do a good job the entire time they're out there, especially when they're only going to be out there for one inning?

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 11:00 PM) This Gumbel is the most boring announcer I've ever heard. I don't want a cheerleader announcing the game but gosh damn. Plus he tries to add color commentary and that makes things worse. He's awful. He's a joke. Is it only the online broadcast that is just skipping long portions of the actual game? I can't believe how often they're skipping the ACTUAL GAME to cover their studio guys' inanities. This is one of the most annoying, stupid broadcasts I've ever seen.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 10:44 PM) Wow TO had a TD but bounced off his hands right to Al Harris.... we got ourselves a ball game. And the NFL Network stops covering the game. They have the 'studio' people chatting with Rich Eisen on the sidelines the whole time the Packers had the ball. Unf***ingbelievable.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 10:26 PM) I watched part of it via SOPcast (it was actually the Armed Forces Network feed). How well does that work? The NFL is streaming the game live for free (go to nfl.com/live) -- but, like I said, the video is worthless for me. Maybe if someone has a great connection, I dunno.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 10:18 PM) Look at the f***ing Knicks/Celtics score... And it's been that way the whole game. They've almost doubled the Knicks in every quarter. Pretty damn funny.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 09:52 PM) So can any of you actually watch tonight's game? I'm trying to watch it online, but the video is literally minutes behind the audio. Basically just listening to the tv coverage.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 07:46 PM) I don't think you should try to compare his season to Braun's. Young's age is being understated in my opinion. At age 21 Braun was playing for University of Miami, and Delmon is holding his own against major league pitchers. And I wouldn't say he strikes out a ton, his K% was 18% which is only slightly above his minor league rate. His patience seems to be the biggest concern, he really cannot draw walks. But if I were a Twins fan, I'd be pleased with this trade. That's fair. I was only trying to say that the difference between him and Braun (in 2007) isn't small, it's a chasm. The age thing, I dunno. He progressed normally through the minors, wasn't particularly rushed, and played well (enough) there. I don't know if "holding your own" -- by itself -- really promises much more. How many stars came up young, struggled, then became what everyone thought they'd be? Honest question -- I'm sure it's happened, but I wonder how often. Just looking randomly -- Sheffield struggled in his age-20 year in a little more than half a season. But he was good in his age-21 year, and even in his age-20 year he was showing patience (about a 1/1 k/bb ratio). I'm trying to find power-hitting outfielders, avoiding superstars like Griffey (not a fair comparison). Andruw Jones, kinda. Cliff Floyd? You're right about the strikeouts, I was mostly thinking about the k/bb. My first reaction to the trade was that it was a great deal for the Twins. Now I'm thinking that it was a pretty even swap. I'm mostly just trying to say that the questions and doubts people are raising seem fair.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 06:27 PM) He was a rookie batted near .300 and had an rbi total somewhere in the 90's. Now, it might not compare to Braun's rookie season but thats damn good. His ops+ was 91, so he was a below-average hitter. Braun's was 153. It "might not compare", no. He had a low obp, slugged around .400, struck out a ton, and he hasn't (yet) shown any patience, nor any trend suggesting he's getting more patient. I'm not even panning the trade, or Young. People who've seen him play more than I have still believe he has worlds of talent, and that seems reasonable. But the questions are fair, and his season was certainly disappointing. You don't expect one of the top prospects in baseball to be a below average hitter, even in his rookie year.

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 05:45 PM) Dan Roche of WBZ-TV says the deal is done and will be announced later this evening Sean McAdam on WEEI saying he is hearing the same thing except it will not be announced until Santana is locked up and the Red Sox would get 72 hours to do so. Boston sends Coco Crisp, Jon Lester, Michael Bowden and Jed Lowrie to the Twins. Also The score had this in the update as well. Huh. That's not quite as strong as what I expected them to get. Not a bad group of players, but still...

QUOTE(MHizzle85 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 04:19 PM) Have you not read any of his articles? In fact he blames hip-hop for the mentality that most young black men have today. Myself being a young black man that listens to mainly hip-hop, i've never picked up a gun in my life, nor have I ever thought about killing someone. Everything he writes about something happening to an african-american is mainly due to hip-hop, or some other aspect of society which has "doomed" the guy. I still don't see how this makes him "real" Maybe he's too real for someone like you to understand. Just kidding! Please don't shoot me!
